The rush of being in the ring is still there at times, but all too often I feel like I am treading water. ACPW isn't a horrible place to work, but it has been four years and we still can't seem to draw much of a crowd. A night like tonight it didn't feel like it was worth having to be in the ring with Jay Becker in front of a crowd that looked to be thirty people at the most. Sometimes it starts to feel that I am becoming the bitter veteran I often portray and I don't think I like that. At least it is pretty good pay for such a small company. I was signed on to be the one that worked with all the new guys and help them improve in the ring so Daedalus was good about paying me for it. Maybe that is why I have stuck around so long. That and it isn't like anyone else has come calling. I guess I can't complain too much. ???: "Hey, King! I got something for you." http://i.imgur.com/Xumk5NJ.jpg Speaking of paychecks. If anything Daedalus is quick to pay most people after the show. He is a bit thick at times and I don't think he fully understands the wrestling business, but he is a good guy. SK: "Thanks. When is the show next month?" The look I get is not one I like. He almost seems sheepish about something. It looks like my night is taking a turn real quick. DB: "Well I have been talking to Face lately and well....you know we aren't making money these days and we have decided to try and go in a new direction." SK: "Never wrong to freshen things up, but why do you look so nervous, Daed?" DB: "Ahh....well the new direction will start out slow, but for the first move I am going to have to let you go." Dammit, you have to be kidding me. It looks like he can sense I have just been put in a very foul mood the way he moves back. DB: "You are a great worker, but you also are very expensive!" he stammers. "And we are going to do other cuts. You aren't the only one out. I just...wanted to make sure you got a show in this month so you had some extra holiday cash." SK: "This is really how it is going to go? No farewell match or anything like that?" DB: "I....gosh. I wish we would have thought of that. It would have been a good main event!" This is what I mean about him being a bit thick. It wouldn't be bad if I had more of a notice, but I have nothing lined up and for the first time since 2009 I am going to be looking work. Daedalus still looks ready to cover up as if I was going to punch him when I stand, but all I could do was say nothing and grab my bag. Too many thoughts were going through my head and I just needed to get out of here. DB: "I'm really sorry about this." This project might go a bit on the slow side, but I had the writing bug bite me lately and I needed to do something. I am also a horrible person and using some T-Verse banners for AAW, but I am totally blaming MHero for that because he gave me the idea. I had spend the past few days thinking of what to do. I have thought about calling both the Stone and DeColt families to see if they needed an enhancement talent. I even pondered looking into 4C, but I am unsure at my age I want to punish my body that much. I was almost at the point of just going into something of a retirement when I saw a familiar name show up on my cell phone. Why in the world would be be calling? http://i.imgur.com/mGogoVN.jpg SK: "Hello?" AL: "Hey kid. Sorry I haven't called sooner. Been a bit busy. How are you doing?" SK: "Honestly? Like shit. I am thinking of hanging up the boots at this point." AL: "Now don't do that. Not at least until you hear what I got to say. You see I am unemployed too now and I have an offer for you." Now this I didn't expect to hear. Art is perhaps one of the finest road agents you could ask for. I could not even fathom why Daedalus would fire him as well before he looked at cutting costs elsewhere. SK: "Wait, you got fired too?" AL: "Hah! Like he would have the balls to do that. Nah, I quit because of how he handled things with you. I went to bat to try and get you back, but Daedalus was set on going in a new direction. I told him I didn't want to be part of it and walked out." SK: "I appreciate it, Art, but there was no need for us both end up unemployed over this." AL: "I don't plan on being on the sidelines for long and I am hoping the same can be said for you. How do you feel about helping me start a new promotion?" I don't honestly know how long I was silent. It could have been a few seconds or a few minutes. All I know if it was the latter Art patiently waited for a response. It really took a few minutes for things to process for me. SK: "Are you serious?" AL: "Damn right I am. We pretty much did everything there anyways so why not do it on our own terms? Come on, kiddo. I'll run the business end of things and all you got to do is book and wrestle." SK: "You want me to book? I never even thought of doing that." AL: "If Face could book you can do it. You have a better mind for wrestling than that lil pimple. I am not asking you to make it CGC, kiddo. I am just saying help book the matches and outcomes. Maybe throw a few things in here and there like telling a guy to do a promo." Is this really happening? Here I was a few moments ago pondering what to do and now this is getting thrown at me? It feels like a weird dream or something. The fact I was silent again seemed to show I was hesitant about it all. AL: "I see you are unsure. I guess I did lay it on quick and thick for you. How about this. I'll give you a call in a few days and we'll have lunch and talk about things. I am going to get things in motion no matter what. I would like you to be along for the ride. I don't like seeing damn fine talent go to waste. See you then." Before I could even say goodbye he had hung up. As if I didn't have enough thoughts going through my mind already. Still, a chance to work with Art again would be nice. I just don't know if I could handle that kind of responsibility. What if I can't do it? I ended up deciding to meet up with Art. If anything I felt I owed that much both to him and myself. What harm is there to see what he had planned? I did not expect him to have what he did. We had met up at a small diner and he had a portfolio already with names of people he had been in touch with. Logos he had made as well as already rentals for a ring and a venue this upcoming January. He could only give a grin and a I swear I could see a glint in his eye when he noticed how surprised I was. AL: "Consider it a pet project I have had on my mind for the past few months to a year, kiddo. You getting canned just made me finally move along with it." SK: "I don't know how I feel about that." AL: "You should be flattered! It means you are the reason behind the birth of a company." SK: "And possibly the cause of a quick dem-OWW!" Who knew Art still had it in him? The slap he gave to the back of my head had my ears ringing and I am sure there is a nice red mark in the shape of his hand back there already. AL: "Okay we need to fix that. Positive thinking. This isn't the Sky King I remember. I want a confident one. I want the one that could be given a broom handle and still put on a damn fine match." SK: "Okay okay! I see you have the ring rented and a venue. But uh, what about other stuff? What about a referee and other wrestlers?" AL: "Referee we got. It was down to who got back to me first. Dace Lavoie or Rob Perkins. Rob almost instantly called me back. As for who else to grab? Haven't you taken the look at my reports?" I had briefly. I noticed some old ACPW guys. Ricochet Ramone, Kirk Drury, and Taylor Kidd. The rest were some names even I barely remembered along with some new faces. SK: "I will try to browse better. This is a lot of stuff to take in, Art." AL: "Well don't worry too much about it. You can take the reports home. I don't think we will get everyone, but I figure a dozen or so would be more than enough for our first show. I even have a title. It isn't pretty, but we can worry about pretty once we see if things. I just need ya to commit, kiddo. Don't tell me you don't like the idea of being one of the top dogs." Being one of the top guys. Sure I have always considered that when it comes to ring work. I always did pride myself on that aspect, but as far as being a 'top dog' as Art put it I never really thought of myself that way. AL: "There is that silence again. You are a hell of a worker, but I think all the years of never getting to a bigger company have you feeling like you don't deserve things. I personally think it was a damn shame out of all those years in ACPW you had one title for five months. Every time you were supposed to get a run with the main one Face always changed his mind. It was always El Diablo or Mimic and then he got a chubby for Grimm when he joined up. Not saying they didn't deserve it, but I think you did too." Maybe I did deserve better at times. Really in the end I was happy just having steady work and knowing I could always put on a good match even when I was put up against some of the greener talents. Maybe I should indulge. It sure beats wondering what I am going to do next. And if anything it gives me work for a few months. SK: "Okay, sign me up. What do you need me to do?" This time it was another solid slap, this time a jovial one to the back that I think fixed a kink I have had for a few months to be honest. AL: Enjoy the holidays first! At the start of the year we will finish getting things ready and near the end of January we will have our first show. Now to celebrate. Waiter! Dessert! All I can do was smile. Art's personality is a bit infectious admittedly and for the first time in a few weeks I feel like everything is going to be okay. I spent some time with the family on the holidays, but come the start of the year I was working with Art to get people hired and to make sure the show would be ready without a hitch. About two weeks before we were to finally hold the show Art gave me a flyer showing the matchups. SK: "Four way for the main event?" AL: "Four guys I can trust to put on a good match and get us noticed. And it is for our title so I wanted to seem important by including what is probably our four biggest names." SK: "It does leave the rest of the show a bit lacking." AL: "Kid, we aren't the Stones or the DeColts. We can afford to have some bad in there. How about we see who can sink or swim? I want the people that do come to watch us leave feeling they saw a damn good main event for such a small promotion." It is like night and day between Art and Daedalus. Of course Art has been through it all. He has worked for CGC and NOTBPW. His career has lasted over thirty years when counting behind the scenes. No, he isn't taking this lightly. I have to wonder just how long he has wanted to do this. He says a few months, but the passion he just seems to exude makes it seem like he has had this on his mind for much longer. SK: "So everyone is notified and everything is taken care of. Do you think we will get a decent crowd?" AL: "We can hopes so, kiddo. I told you to not worry about the money and worry about the wrestling. Time to see what these guys can do. Look at it this way. Consider it practicing so we can fine tune things for the next show. Chin up, kiddo. We got a damn show to do." SK: "Yeah....you're right. I'll get with the guys and make sure they don't have any last minute questions and such." AL: "That is what I want to hear. I know for a fact after tonight we will have five fans that will keep coming back!" I want to be as confident as he is outside of the ring. At least once between those ropes I can let loose and get caught up in the moment. I have always wanted to work with Cal and Tempest, but never had the chance despite us all being in the business for so long. Ramone, well I am interested to see how he has improved since leaving ACPW. The rest of the matches? Al is right on that. We will find out what we have and how to make it work better after actually seeing some of the guys in the ring. At least there are a few veterans around to help out. She was an addition Al made thinking it would be good to have some eye candy. Given the small group gathered to watch is all male it seems he made a good choice. She is a good looking girl and she at least has their attention. There are no microphones for Austin to use, but given the crowd they aren't exactly needed. AS: "She is pretty, my friends. She also is something you can never hope to attain. Don't feel sad though. In fact you should be elated by the fact you are here to witness something special. You get to be the select few people that will one day be able to see me on television as one of the biggest names in the world and look to your friends to say 'I was there at the beginning'. They call me Austin Smooth and I will show you exactly why they do." The kid has charisma, but he seemed to pause a bit and think of what he had to say next. Nothing to worry about too much given the focus more on the wrestling with only bits of talking to just give people practice for when and if they move on to another company. Venus didn't have to talk either. Her presence and the short dress did exactly what they needed to do. They both have upside, but they are still rather raw prospects that will improve with time and experience. Smooth does have one thing going for him right off the bat in the fact his technical abilities are already better than everyone else on the roster. It is a nice little niche he has where most everyone else is more of a high flier. Roger gets some offense in early, but Smooth is quick to ground him and keep him tied up with various holds that eventually lead to him locking in a move he calls the Smooth Hold which forces Roger to tap. Winner: Austin Smooth Rating: 23 http://i.imgur.com/kpFkTn5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fkoXAft.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/Oo3AVvJ.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/mJFwq6d.jpg Buck Graham vs Taylor Kidd This bout was a bit on the sloppy side. Buck is a safe worker, but far from a good one. It is easy to see why he has for the most part faded into obscurity. Kidd is another one that is young and needs more work, but he is athletic and has some nice moves. His most impressive being the 450 splash off the top rope he uses to put Buck Graham away after a rather short match. Winner: Taylor Kidd Rating: 15 http://i.imgur.com/kpFkTn5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UET4tPr.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/Oo3AVvJ.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/3apEbeO.jpg Brimstone vs Fearless Blue Match wise it can't really get worse than this one. Both guys really need work and even given the short time there were quite a few botches that were painful to see. Brimstone had control most of the match he seemed to have things in hand when Blue managed to catch Brimstone of guard and pin him with a surprise roll-up. Winner: Fearless Blue Rating: 13 http://i.imgur.com/kpFkTn5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UET4tPr.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/3apEbeO.jpg Blue gets very little time to celebrate as an irate Brimstone attacks and lays out the winner. It is short and still a bit painful. Both guys aren't exactly known in these parts and the few people here didn't react at all. On the bright side it can only go up from here. Rex is a veteran that is probably happy to finally be working with people more his size and Kirk managed to keep up and help put on a pretty good match. It isn't going to win any awards, but both men manage each hit some moves that got the few people watching to cheer at times. A few pinfalls are exchanged, but in the end Kirk manages to slap a Scorpion Deathlock on Rex and the veteran is forced to tap. Winner: Kirk Drury Rating: 27 http://i.imgur.com/kpFkTn5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/49o2ljw.jpg Tempest Appleby comes out as the main event is getting close to being underway. The eldest member of the active roster is one of the few that has some name value and he seems more than happy to be working. TA: I just wanted to come out before the match and thank management for giving this old man a chance to wrestle again. Some of you remember me possibly back when I was more fit, a bit prettier and with less thinning hair. Ricochet Ramone just shakes his head at Tempest and holds up a hand as if telling the man to not speak up. RR: No one cares. You are a has been just like the other two duds in this match. People came here to see younger and more athletic talents such as myself. So how about you shut up, tuck your tail between your legs and just watch as I become the first All Action Canadian champion! Appleby doesn't say anything, but it is easy to judge he isn't happy. Ramone gets to work on his promo chops a bit too and at least give the people one person to hate in the main event. All four men showed up and delivered a quality match for such a small promotion. Each one got time to shine and those in attendance were left guessing who could possibly walk away with the title. Perhaps most surprising his Tempest looks ready to win it when he manages to take out Cal with his Tumbleweed Elbow Drop. Cal seems to have at least the sense to roll out of the ring much to Appleby's disappointment. Ramone decides to strike at this point and takes out Tempest. Some matches went a bit too long and other than perhaps myself and Cal there are psychology issues all around. Art decided for me to have the belt for now despite my wishes for Cal to run with it first for a bit. Not sure how I feel about being booker and champion and hope it doesn't cause any locker room trouble. Rex and Kirk surprised me and gave a match that could have even worked for ACPW and honestly our main event was on part of that what you might see there as well. The rental ring wasn't exactly the best of quality and it had my back all out of sorts. Maybe I really am getting old and my body just doesn't hold up like it used to. It is a reminder that I will be thirty-five soon and I am no spring chicken these days. Even so it was satisfying to perform and I admit having a blast with the others. Ramone seems to be better than he was when he left ACPW, Cal was as good as I have heard and for thirty-eight Tempest Appleby wrestled that night as if he was ten years younger. It also feels weird that for the first time in a few years and only the second time in my career I have a championship. It still hasn't fully sunk in at this point when my phone began to ring. http://i.imgur.com/mGogoVN.jpg AL: "Hey, kiddo. How is the champ doing?" SK: "Still weird to think I am the champ. I still think we should have given it to Cal to start off. He is a hell of a hand." AL: "And so are you. Stop being that way and just enjoy it. You are a champion and I want you to be proud of it, dammit." SK: "I am! It is just weird. I know, I'm being strange I suppose. Just calling to chat or is something up?" AL: "Hah, mostly to just let you know I had someone film some of the matches and I had him piece together some clips and put them online. A few hits and such. Maybe it will bring more people in. It at least gets our name out there a bit more." He certainly seems to be enjoying himself. It is like Art has become a new guy all together. Sure he was never a hard ass to begin with or anything. It is just good to see him enjoying himself. It really does help bring up moral when the owner himself is always in a good mood. SK: "So what's next? Already lining up a show?" AL: "We got that place rented pretty much the third Saturday of every month, kiddo. Unless I am told otherwise we will be having a show there come hell or high water. We got to keep our momentum going. Not sure what to do with the rest, but I know you and Cal are going to headline." I admit that made me smile. I enjoyed working with Cal and getting to see what we could do one on one has me looking forward to next month already. SK: "I have no problems with that. I have a few ideas for matches. Care if I bounce them off of you?" AL: "Now that is what I like to hear. Spit it out already." And with that we got started on hammering out the next show. AAW All Action Canadian Championship Sky King © vs Cal Sanders Sanders is someone who I always want to do well as he´s a type of worker that I really love to have in my promotions since he´s good in-ring skills will help to get good ratings in matches but lack of entertainment skills stops him from being a top guy in most companies. To me, guys like him are perfect midcard guys that could occasionally get a main event push too if the situation allows it (which in this case, I feel it does). That said, he won´t win this one. Also Appearing Fearless Blue and Taylor Kidd vs Brimstone and Buck Graham As much as I like Brimstone´s alt, he has pretty horrible in-ring skills and so has Buck... not that Blue or Kidd is much better but I figure they are bit better and might as well get the win here. After all, you do need some faces to look at least semi-strong in order to supply challengers for King. Austin Smooth vs Rex Reeves Smooth did get some promo time on the first show and got a win from a decent match too so I figure he´s higher on pecking order. Roger Monteiro vs Kirk Drury Drury has bit more popularity and he did get win from his first match (and it was a decent match compered to rest of the card) so I figure you might as well build him up a bit more by having him go over Monteiro Tempest Appleby vs Ricochet Ramone I assume that Sky King is heel (if that even matters in this company) since he´s facing Sanders who is only good as a face and with winner of this one being most likely next challenger for King, it makes more sense to have Appleby to win this instead of Ramone. Things are going a bit fast now because of it being the weekend and I am just in the zone. I think Cal is good enough to challenge, and not quite good enough to hold, but this should be a great feud. Also Appearing Fearless Blue and Taylor Kidd vs Brimstone and Buck Graham The majority of the old SCCW guys (see: not Jack Griffith) are pretty bad, and Graham is no exeception Austin Smooth vs Rex Reeves Of your starting guys, Smooth is probably the best overall prospect (depending of course, on destiny rolls). Roger Monteiro vs Kirk Drury A toss up, so I'll give it to the superior Canadian talent Tempest Appleby vs Ricochet Ramone Ricochet has more long-term potential, I think he deserves to take this one.
