The Road to Glory Challenge

Recommended Posts

<p>Finally hit Regional in October of 98 using the 97 version of the Cornell-Verse. Based my company out of Mid South, so no real regional battles to hurt my growth. Been running weekly shows, and added a 5th PPV type show to each month just recently so I can work on building up PPV event prestige. </p><p> </p><p>

The biggest thing I've just noticed is SWF bought out NOTBPW in October of 98, so I have all the Stones to myself. </p><p> </p><p>

I was also able to bring in Steve Flash and a couple of other really good guys like Eric Tyler and Pablo Rodriguez. Nemesis would sign for me, but he'd be nearly twice as much as anybody on my roster, and is so over he'd never agree to lose to anyone, so I think I'll stick with what I've got.</p><p> </p><p>

We're almost at the end of 98, and we're chugging along quite comfortable. I've upgraded my production each of the last 3 months as I'm bringing in quite a lot of money. I've got pretty expensive talent at the top, and pretty cheap guys at the bottom to balance it out so we're bringing in about 20 grand a month. I can get a local TV deal in Mid-South once I hit 42 popularity, so that's what I'm chugging towards now. SWF has turned into a monster.</p>

<p>It's been over 4 years since my company made it to Regional size and despite our shows always increasing popularity, we just now got popular enough to score a TV deal. Popularity keeps rising up real slow, leading me to believe that my character will have started to decline by the time we get to Cult size and possibly retired by National <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Guess the way to succeed in this challenge is by jumping to larger promotions, then once you're with a National sized one, work your way up to. What can I say, I've become too enamored with the little company I started from the ground up <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Not in a National PPV just yet, but I am in the main event of my regional promotion! At least I know who to work with whenever I get my company National. That was pretty sweet. Definitely a shock since my best match up until this point was an 85 between Dan Stone Jr and Pablo Rodriguez, who both were STOLEN from me by BHOTWG. Fun fact, my 3rd highest grade was between this same team, myself and Angry Gilmore vs Jeremy Stone & Duane Stone. Both were also stolen from me by Burning Hammer. Basically any match with a stone is absolutely money. I'm finally at the point where I also fit that criteria.</p>

Started an RTG Lite game in the CVerse 97.

Company is TCW with Gil Thomas as the owner and my UC is The Great Iitaka. I started a game and hired too many bigger names. So I started over. Going to try and limit how many workers I use per show.

Only things I splurged on were Baby Jamie as ref and then Kenny O'Quinn and Rock Downpour are both pulling double duty as color/announcer and road agents.

So that was a fun first year.

We've been pretty much constantly in the red with only a couple months of profit. I also managed to annoy some of my workers by having a second season finale by accident and leaving them off of it. Oops.

Hirings basically consist of 'Are they a good influence?' and 'Are they in the Mid South?' to minimise costs as much as possible and keep the locker room under control since my leadership skills are lacking. It's kind of a love-fest backstage, with multiple strong friendships and dating relationships.

Roster:

Tom Gilmore

Troy Tornado

Manuia Kaulu

Harry Allen

Eddie Peak

Doug Peak

Henry Bennett

Steve Gumble

Cherry Bomb

Helen Earth

Susan Forabruisin

Sonia Lopez (Miss Mexico)

Jeanie Hopps (a second RTG character on the women's side)

Dave Gunderson (owner, colour)

Jonathan Taylor (ref)

Heart of Texas Rodeo Wrestling has had a combination of hilariously awful and actually quite successful year. Our match grades have sucked but because we're so tiny they're actually good.

Pop >> Per does not go so well at Local.

Main story (which I use generously, we've not been booking storylines) has been Tom Gilmore vs. Eddie Peak, mostly because Gilmore is really good and Peak pulls B- grades in menace angles which is frankly astonishing. Eddie won the Lone Star title in our first ever season finale (Rumble on the Ranch) and Sonia won the Ladies' title at the same event.

Cherry's been great for grades too. D- to D promos with Sonia. We have three NBTs and they're all women.

Might need to upgrade on Taylor since he dings every single match. On the other hand I'm cheap and so is he.

For our main man Manuia things have been decentish. He's actually one of our steadier hands thanks to his performance row all starting at 60 - he makes it onto ring generals and show stoppers which is kind of just hilarious. Hasn't done great for grades but eh; not really any opponents worth writing home about and he has bad chemistry with Eddie (which he is not alone with, Eddie has a ton of bad chemistries).

Reasonable improvements all around, will post a screen later.

Only major negative is developing a strong dislike of Doug 'Ass Menace' Peak after he broke my butt with a botch. (Doug also gave Gilmore a buttock contusion on our very first show). Kind of sucks both from the injury perspective and because he's Eddie's brother, dating Cherry and a positive influence. Have him for another two years at least, though.

1997

34. “Healing Hands” Over the holiday season you book yourself in for several massages and physio appointments. +7.5 to all Physical Condition.

This would be pointless if not for the broken butt, which knocked 15% off body and legs, so, nice to recoup a little of that.

Edit: And screen

LrvXI8I.png

So that's 5-6 points on the whole top row (except brawling, which was already 60), a really solid improvement in the fundamentals (all of them were 60, so that's a letter grade in everything but selling), a handful of points in the whole physical row, and 9, 7, and 8 points in the entertainment row. Seriously not bad, given the quality of the opposition.

Got my owner as a road agent and found a cheap, young local ref. Wanna get the first year done quick.</p>

<p>Started making money in Year Two with the industry and economy peaking. Might move to two shows a month to start really pushing the growth.</p><p> </p><p>

NOTBPW, 5SSW and GCG all died, which is both alarming and kind of disappointing. HGC picked up Alex and Steve DeColt and Dan Stone prior to this so they'd be having a great time if they hadn't randomly put their title on Larry Vessey then Teddy Flame. Sam Strong finally won the big one in 1998 and then immediately suffered a sternum injury.</p><p> </p><p>

Roster's stayed similar but having money means I might bring in a few more dudes. Teddy Powell has been on the unemployment list but my fans don't like cruisers so not sure if he'd be worthwhile. New Wave and Biggs Brothers are available.</p><p> </p><p>

----</p><p> </p><p>

HTRW has been motoring along. We've had a couple D+ shows which has been awesome for our size. Eddie Peak picked up our Soul of Texas tourney title (as Tom Gilmore, the holder, got injured), but then lost the Lone Star main title in October to my user character, mostly to freshen up the main event since Eddie has bad chemistry with literally every face except Gilmore. don't anticipate holding it too deeply into 1999.</p><p> </p><p>

Cherry Bomb took the Ladies' title off Sonia Lopez. They might trade it back and forth, haven't decided; they're head and shoulders my best women's wrestlers and arguably two of our best wrestlers full stop.</p><p> </p><p>

Brought a declined and unemployed Rick Horn in on a oneshot to lose to Eddie Peak. He got mad but hey, oneshot deal and probably a cool moment for the Texan fans. Also had JD Morgan for a oneshot first title defence but it wasn't as good as it could have been because he turned up steaming drunk. Manu got annoyed.</p><p> </p><p>

Went up a weight class to lightweight towards the end of the year, which went through on January 1st. Bumped me up 6 points in star quality and a fair bit of the physical stats too.</p><p> </p><p>

Henry Bennett is annoyed with me for not increasing his pay and so is Doug. I will rib them both in retaliation, as that has become Manuia's signature activity backstage. </p><p> </p><p>

Decent improvements all around in skills. Screenie later, once again.</p><p> </p><p>

Edit, screen! <img alt="YEUrDKj.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/YEUrDKj.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

<p>I found most of the guys signed with others are like 400+ most of the game. </p><p> </p><p>

Most of my guys are on 250 and below for wages. </p><p> </p><p>

Just signed Chris Caulfield at 400 ppa. May be a bit pricey. I may look at others.</p><p> </p><p>

Having guys gaining popularity with cult+ promotions would do my roster wonders </p><p> </p><p>

I made the mistake of not checking where my first two shows were held. After 2 shows there's no pop increase. Got a 12 and a 13 for show ratings. Would have liked higher. Like 20 or somthing.</p><p> </p><p>

Looking forward to region in a few years. Where I can get some sort of Decent roster. Having a couple of vets with decent performance skills would go a long way.</p><p> </p><p>

In terms of road agents. My owner that's a ref is a road agent, not the best and brings the score down. But it saves me 1000+</p><p> </p><p>

Guy I'll have to make do. </p><p> </p><p>

My critical owner goals are having 10k by the end of year 2.</p><p> </p><p>

Get to small by end of year 2. </p><p> </p><p>

Getting that 11 importance is going to be difficult of I continue raising pop in a such a slow way.</p><p> </p><p>

What happens if you get fired from your company? I'm assuming it'll be super difficult for even other local companies to hire you and that's even if a spot becomes available.</p>

If you don't mind going a little unrealistic, I did weekly shows and was comfortably in the black with equal production values as rival promotions and some solid guys at the top of the card inside a year. There was a point I even did 8 shows a month.

Having a TV deal, even just locally in your home region helps a ton. Spillover can get you a larger regional deal like 3 or 4 areas and keep doing that. With the rules having you start with $1.000, I'm amazed how you managed to avoid going bankrupt. Plus there's owner goals about debt so you risk getting fired.

Well your early shows are going to gain you pop no matter what. You get like 3 other workers that cost about 200. Get you the cheapest ref you can. My owner was a road agent that worked for free. Otherwise, one of the wrestlers will be the road agent. You can dgrownvery quickly just by doing that on weekly shows to the point where you turn a very small profit pretty quick. Then when you start making a couple grand a month, hire slightly better workers. Rinse and repeat. Gotta run weekly or twice a week though if you want to grow pop really quick. Using the super cheap workers you really don't lose much money at all so when you start turning the small profits you'll be outta debt really quick.

I'm pretty impressed by that method honestly.

I'm vanishingly cautious so I don't like spamming shows that way, but perhaps that's just me being old school with it.

My classic 0/0/0/0 took 9 years to hit National.

Not finished another year yet but Eddie Peak is managing A grade menace angles with E overness. I am a little terrified.

As long as you are breaking even by a year and half it don't matter how many shows you run. Personally I ran 3 brands with my UC not being a part of one so I could wrestle on any show. Each brand got their own show with the last day being a super show.

It is a bit depressing seeing that massive debt accumulate but after a several months you see it going the exact opposite direction.

Pro Tip if you run 4 shows a week your roster will break quickly and/or will be poached. The great thing is you can get to cult lightning fast if you are targeting these brands in three different areas while running the super show in you home area. I suggest to cap yourself off at regional until you have the money to make the jump but you know the pop will be there.

I just started a new save in Japan. We're touring all but 3 months with 3 shows per week plus a special event the last day of the month. I was using the light rules with fog of war off and numbered grades. Want to see how I do with the harder version in a country with a lot of good promotions.
