The GAMMA Thread

Recommended Posts

First few months into the game, and I had Alan Kendall absolutely blast Rufus Stephens minutes into their fight. He's currently feuding with Nathan Chambers, who picked up a win of Gabriel Gallego, but I think I might go ahead and give him a shot at the winner of Regueiro/Silva, since Brubaker broke his hand whilst putting a beating on Darin Blood that sent him into a hiatus.

Running a COTT season focused on FWs, with Morrison and Curbeam as coaches, as a mean to either get Sean back on track or have a new star break into the top 10 at LW. Lamont Banner got eliminated in his first fight courtesy of Fernando Peragon's power, another mild upset was Foggy Lee beating Snorri Gunnarson by decision. First person to have made it into the semis was Freddy Lomax, whom I fancy to make it into the finale.

anyone got tips on dethroning dean without cheating in the editor , although i will say it does get me invested into his fights but he just had a 10 round decision with napier which i felt he lost , it was very shady , ironically i had made my self a judge in the db before starting the game and "i" had the fight 97-93 which was dramatically incorrect the other judges had it 96-94 which i still do think was wrong there was no way this fight was a UD maybe a split... i guess im ranting at this point , if you have any suggestions on fighters to try and put him against please let me know.

Braulio Moura has schooled Dean for me.

As for the Super Heavyweight division, I'm into Aug '04 and I have just adjusted the weight limits for my SHW/HW divisions, so SHW starts at 251lbs rather than 266lbs. Partly because my HW division was bloated, partly because I felt the 206-265 spread was too wide, partly to give more depth to the SHW division and partly because Kel Ryan was out of fresh challengers after running through Palmer Lette. It has brought Rav Kapur, Gladstone Lopes, Mugur Boc and Mason Archer into the division, as well as aging Tim Boyer, Stafford Alois and Armen Sarkisian. Only Kapur looks like he will give Ryan trouble but it will help cement Kel Ryan as a legend of GAMMA if he ticks off a few more names.

Seconding the Braulio Moura to unseat Dean comment. In my game, Dean beat Ashley Ballard, Buddy Garner and Osmosis Benn (via Split Decision though so not as clear as the others) till Moura finally beat him via TKO.

As for the SHW division, I've embraced the challenge of trying to build it up. Teddy Glossop has pretty much destroyed everyone and can pretty much main event any show with the right opponent, Davey Rushton keeps surprising me with upset victories to remain a strong contender and I've got some younger guys like Moses Amokachi, Bahman Baboumian and a poached Eric Coleman developing and coming up. Plus I moved Mason Archer, Vitor de Melo and Sylvester Collins up to fill it out with some decent fighters.

Considering you can start up a featherweight division with Ziskie and already have Low Level National fighter, I feel a lot of the challenge of building a division has been taken away from me. I picked up Ziskie and Banner for my lightweight division at first, got them both to Mid Level National then made them coaches of a Featherweight COTT. And started a women's division without poaching any current champions at first.

I always like to feel I made the stars, not just poached already made stars, so SHW is perfect since literally no one is a star and it up to you to find the few gems in a division of cans.

I put him against Tora Mizwar for his first fight in my save, and he got finished. Think it was in the first round too, but not too sure. I loved that too, since I have a soft spot for Tora.

On a couple of my games, Buddy Garner is the Daniel Cornier of the middleweight division. He cleans out the division but just cannot beat Dean, no matter how many times he fights him, just like how DC cannot beat JJ.

Also, like I wrote previously Dean was "toxic" due to being in a sex tape scandal so he was out for a while and Garner took over.

i remember you saying that , cause someone commented was it him laying on his wife for 25 mins which i thought was hilarious, with the way i have my rules set up i think its more competitive for him but i still havent found someone to beat him, although i will say people have been definite game to go the distance with him. buddy garner especially , as well as garner is one of my favorite characters in this universe, someone mentioned bringing sorkin down to face him , im thinking about doing that.

After that Dean went on to lose another four in a row! He has won a couple of fights since but doesn't look like he will ever crack the top 10 again.

I have had that happen to a few of my ‘dominant’ champs, including Foster and Dean. When they were beaten, their performances declined noticeably. Foster at least briefly won his belt back but lost it on his first defence, then lost again, and finally won an easy fight only to get popped for drugs and have it ruled a no contest. Now he’s sitting out a year on suspension. Perhaps it is merely anecdotal and the champs I’ve had it happen to have reached ‘their time’ and the slippery slope of age has claimed them, but maybe there is an element of loss management? Perhaps some guys need that confidence and momentum built back up before difficult challenges? That would be quite a nuanced psychological step for the AI so I’m probably reading too much into limited data.

I dont have all my champions in front of me because I dont have the game on this pc but my SHW's have been very interesting and some of the best fights i've had oddly enough. Though George Pickering is an animal and just decimates people, Teddy Glossop got close and he's the only one to give him even a mildly tough fight.

Matthew Dean lost in the very show I had him in. Did a one night tourney for each belt and Matthew Dean got beaten by Decision by Buddy Garner. Haven't had a chance to fight him again to see if he's falling off or if he comes back as the stud we all remember.

So if you want him to lose I recommend one night tourneys to wear him out.

Damnit! :D One week before my biggest card ever De Vries gets injured. I bring in "The Marine" to fight in his home state (coincidence) but Napier doesn't want to fight him as he's not well known enough. Too bad as local fighters are capped close to HLR and Napier was just 3% over the MLN limit. I didn't "cheat" and adjust the values as it doesn't make sense for the #4 to fight a nobody, even if he is 12-0.

A couple of months before Manuel Silva vs Alan Kendall happened, and Alan gets injured and will be on the shelf for a year... Serves me right for putting injuries at max - I'm definitely going to lower my injury settings after that.

Guess Silva vs Chambers or Brubaker will be next.

Okay, just finished my first year as GAMMA so since I've really enjoyed reading everyone else's, here's my division-by-division rundown and champs.

I booked 18 shows -- 11 PPVs and 7 TV. I stick to a formula of 5 main show fights and 5 prelims. GAMMA is currently at the Mid Level National cap while I work on getting some more fighters over. We won Company of the Year and also Show of the Year for the Season 3 finale of Clash of the Titans.

Super Heavyweight: Kel Ryan. Unlike some others, this division has produced exciting fights for me -- three title fights in 2002 and none of them got out of the first round. Pickering looked dominant until Big Baby mopped the floor with him. Sets up Ryan defending against a resurgent Davey Rushton in early '03, the first time Super Heavy will be allowed to main event a PPV. I wonder if some of the disinterest in this division comes from the sameness of the renders -- like 20 of my top 25 are thumb-shaped baldies.

Heavyweight: Rav Kapur. The Brit turned the lights out on James Foster and Tim Boyer, forcing a change of guard at Heavyweight. I really screwed up this division! Foster lost his follow-up fight to a debuting Aleksander Ivanov (I imagined this as Foster attempting to address the criticism that he's never faced tough international competition... and then choking). Gladstone Lopes lost a second split decision to Tony McCall who then retired. Even though he bested Foster in his debut and is ranked #2, I feel like Ivanov hasn't "earned" a title shot so I'm holding off until he fights Boyer. Foster and Lopes, both losers, round out the Top 5, so Kapur has just been sitting idle waiting for a fight since July. The top of this division is so, so stagnant to me. Luckily, Sam Hoynes and my dude LGE are climbing quick to inject some new life.

Light Heavyweight: Lawrence Herringbone. Rubenstein absolutely murdered Mike Watson, then edged out Marlon John, before dropping another decision to Herringbone who just has his number. Nilton Fantoni is probably up next after going 3-0 against Linfield Ballard, Watson, and William Harrison. Poached ALPHA stars Tadamasa Yamada and Zvonimir Asanovic will also be debuting in 2003. A very crowded scene. I love it.

Middleweight: Matthew Dean. Of course. Dude big timed me for most of 2002, only defending against Adam White who he dispatched easily. Dean's got a rematch with Moura in January that I'm hoping he wins because a Heji Endo super-fight is on the horizon. Endo crushed poor Dexter Darling in his debut, then immediately called out the champ.

Welterweight: Manuel Silva. Regueiro revenged his loss to Bobby Brubaker with a first round D'Arce Choke before losing the belt in a split decision to Silva. On his road to the title shot, Silva also won a split decision against Darin Blood who I didn't give an immediate rematch to because I needed the title match. While Blood and Regueiro were recuperating, Silva defended successfully against Josh Aldarasio, finally getting a TKO win which I guess was enough to earn him Fighter of the Year. Regueiro and Blood are the top two contenders now. Regueiro will get his rematch first with Blood taking on the winner.

Lightweight: Helio. This dude is savage. Fiyero knocked out that chump Keane pretty easily, but then got his legs sawed off by Helio in his first defense. The leg kick TKO put Fiyero on the shelf for like 5 months. Next in line for the thresher is former champ Brandon Sugar, with Tim Oldacres and Truck Gleeson also making noise. Sean Morrison's comeback victory over Luke Hilton won Fight of the Year (fantastic). I'm using Morrison more as a special attraction fighter than a genuine contender because I think he's spent, but we'll see.

Featherweight: Lamont Banner. Ohhh the credibility hits have been worth it. Launched the Featherweight division with the third season of Clash of the Titans. Ziskie and Li-Kong Ho wouldn't do the show, so they faced off on the finale in a showcase. Banner met Tomohiro Takeuchi in the finals, was the heavy underdog, but knocked the Samurai out in the first. Ho choked out Ziskie, who refused to tap and instead passed out, setting up a title fight between Banner and Ho. Surprisingly, Banner KO'd Ho in the first, becoming the inaugural champ. I purposely staged both those shows in Ohio so that Banner could get that home cooking and man did it pay off. He'll defend against Ziskie in '03. Love, love this division.

Women's Heavyweight: Vacant. Spammed another COTT season to launch my Women's Heavyweight division which covers Featherweights and Bantamweights. The final (and title fight) is set for February: Veronika Sablikova vs. Piper Evergood. Disappointed that Evergood upset Sarah Vaughan in the semifinals as I really wanted her to be my first champion.

Hmm. What else? No big controversies for me. Matthew Dean (Anarchy USA), Spencer Rubenstein (Iron Men), Brandon Sugar (Too Sweet), Li-Kong Ho (Breath of Fire Dojo) and retired Raul Hughes (Demolition Inc) all formed teams at my request, so that's really fleshed out the world for me.

Got a new GAMMA save rolling last night, getting through the first PPV. The intent for this save... RESTRAINT.

Added a Featherweight division again. Signed a bunch of talent, for that and all of the divisions. Ran a new season of COTT, once again with Ho and Gaffigan as coaches. Half of the cast is established but fairly young fighters without much name value and the other half are generated fighters.

Since I oversigned talent on the previous save, I tried to be more careful this time. Some cans for undercard fights. Some prospects. But I was definitely pickier with the prospects this time. Almost no fighters with zero or close to zero experience. Instead, I shortlisted, scouted, and will give them a bit of time on the regional scene to develop.

The first PPV was headlined by Foster getting smashed by Kapur. Also had Pickering defend his title. Sampson beat Glossop - the old man always does better than he should.

Plan for the FW division is Ho versus Gaffigan for the title after the season, then the winner of that faces Ziskie. A couple of the generated contestants on COTT look to be good fighters.

Stole the suggestion in here of getting Dean to start a team. Going to have to ask a few other veterans. Already got that team loaded up with some fighters.

The big issue I've run into so far.... scouting costs. With deciding to scout so many potential signings, my first month scouting cost was like $400k. I've already stopped scouting some, but its kinda necessary to see what a prospect brings to the table as a fighter, unless you turn fog of war off entirely.

Super Heavyweight: Kel Ryan.

Heavyweight: Rav Kapur.

Light Heavyweight: Lawrence Herringbone.

Middleweight: Matthew Dean.

Welterweight: Manuel Silva.

Lightweight: Helio.

Featherweight: Lamont Banner.

Women's Heavyweight: Vacant..

In my game after a year and some months, it's almost the same. Dean however lost his title in the rematch with Loupo, and Lermontov has evaded the threat of Helio for now (did beat him once I think). The women's BW is held by Pam, obviously (FW doesn't seem worth it). :p Awesome that Herringbone managed a second title in your game. I doubt he'll get past Rubenstein in my game.

Big Baby has changed my perception of the SHW division. His one-punch KO power is the stuff of legends in the future. He just headlined my first PPV at the new provider. And it was quite succesfull.

Herringbone always does really well in my games going back to like... WMMA3. He's not the most exciting fighter but I've developed a soft spot for him.

This is interesting! I don't usually bother scouting individual prospects. I tend to hire young guns strictly based on their win-loss and momentum. If they suck when they hit the big leagues, then at least they can serve as a tune-up for some of my other dudes before I cut them. For scouting, I stick a scout with all the major North American teams and let them do work. I haven't noticed the cost so far, especially now that I'm on North American Prime Select and making money hand-over-fist.

Restraint is an interesting topic for GAMMA, though. Do you guys have any hiring rules you set for yourself? Generally, I try to avoid poaching international talent until they've reached High Level Regional in the US. (There are, of course, some guys I like that I always sign regardless.) I also try to keep each division stocked with at least 13 American fighters. I don't go looking to hire people unless a division gets under 25 fighters, but I will steal a fighter from ALPHA-1 if their contract comes up and they're a big enough star.
