The Beginning

Friday Week 4, October 2019

The atmosphere in Stanley Hall was electric. For fifteen years, this had been our base of operations. I’d been here since the first show. Way back in 2005 when Rip Chord had a dream and had Jean Cattley and Karen Killer and a bunch of greenhorns just looking for a shot. I’d been in the broadcast booth that night. Rip had always felt it was important to have live commentary for the video releases. He’d grown up in that era. In the era of studio wrestling and local television without the benefit of any sort of post-production. Live commentary had been essential and he knew who I was because I’d been around. The Stomper was using me in New York so why not use me in Baltimore? That was almost fourteen years ago. Almost fourteen years of calling the matches in Stanley Hall. I’d seen them all. Steven Parker, Erik Strong, Brandon Smith, Findlay O’Farraday, James Hernandez, Cameron Vessey, Casey Valentine, Jay Chord, Greg Gauge, all of ‘em. Every man who had come through this building, I’d seen. I’d called all their matches.

I was a valuable lieutenant. I ran the office. I flyered for the shows. I helped with the sponsors and radio ads and whatever we needed. That was me. If Karen or Jean or Jay needed ideas for where to go next, I always had some. If Rip or Sam needed eyes on a talent, I had some. I went on scouting trips to find new blood. I was a jack-of-all-trades, a utility player, the kind of guy everyone wanted on their roster. I didn’t have a big ego. I wasn’t trying to work for Packer or Eisen or BriCo or the DeColts or the Stones. I was loyal. Fourteen years I’d been in this booth.

“Fforde likes like he is in a world of trouble, Ernest. Bradley Blaze has him right where he wants him.”

The smarmy British man next to me shifted in his seat and with his posh accent replied, “If Fforde wants to retain his Mid Atlantic Championship, he needs to find a way to counter Bradley’s onslaught or it’s going to be over before he knows it.”

It was the main event of Where It All Begins Again. Our biggest show of the year. Most people assume it’s the Rip Chord Invitational or the Sam Keith Classic, but this was our finale. We built to it every October. For years, we had seen the rise of Bradley Blaze. The wild cowboy from Dallas. The twenty-six-year-old had become a star in the six years he had been here and tonight was supposed to be his culminating moment.

“Dallas Drop! Dallas Drop! My God, Bradley Blaze just hit the Dallas Drop on Miller Fforde!” I cried out into my headset. Bradley fell onto Miller Fforde -- another homegrown talent who had risen up the ranks. Senior and only official on the roster, Jay Fair, dropped into position. Fair was also the booker -- the man in charge of the match making -- and he had booked this finish. Blaze had a hallmark 2019. He had won the Rip Chord Invitational and he had been built to this moment when Jay Fair could slap his hand off the mat once, twice, and on the third one it was over.

“We have a new champion! Ernest, we have a new Mid Atlantic Champion!”

“Listen to this crowd here in Baltimore,” Ernest crowed, “They are beside themselves with joy.”

“Well aren’t you? For six years we’ve watched Bradley Blaze gives us everything he has. For six years we’ve watched him pour his being out and tonight...tonight he is Mid Atlantic Champion!”

It was a great night, but it was a night that made me finalize a decision I had been thinking about for quite some time…

The Next Day

“What do you mean you’re leaving?” Sam Keith asked as he stared directly at me. Since Sam had bought MAW from Rip Chord in 2011, he had been my boss. He was a fair and a honest man. Direct if not gruff. He had a good mind for the business and was a good trainer. He had gotten the COTT started. He had navigated the ups and downs of running an independent wrestling company and had MAW in a position where it was now serving as a destination for graduates of TCW’s wrestling school.

“I’ve been approached by a group of investors that would like me to try to replicate the style of promotion we have been doing here, except in Indianapolis,” I told him honestly. He deserved honesty. “I love the work I’ve done here. I’ve been here since day one. Called every show, but I want to do more. I don’t want to just be an announcer that was decent but not great. I don’t want to be remembered as a guy who worked for the guys that made a difference in this business. I want to make a difference myself.”

He ran his hands through his greying hair and even though he wasn’t close to being old enough to be my father he still carried himself like a father figure. “I understand Marv, I do. I’m not going to lie, it is going to suck to see you go.”

“I’ll finish out the year.” I replied to him. “They don’t want to start until January. That gives you plenty of time to find a replacement. I’m not going to compete with you -- if anything, I’d like to work with you. I want to bring the classic territorial style of wrestling to that market. I want to give another outlet for guys to work. I want to prove to myself that I can do this.”

I was adamant. Most men lived lives of quiet desperation. Isn’t that what Thoreau said? I was a good announcer. I wasn’t great. I wasn’t going to be in the top five in the business, but could I be a top five booker? The only way to find out would be to try and this group of local business leaders was offering me the opportunity. They saw an opening in the market.

“Indianapolis is a dark town. There hasn’t been a name wrestling organization there since… well, ever. It has always been a fly-over town. Companies would run it, but the whole Great Lakes region has been dark for ages. They see it as a place that could develop into a money-making area because of the sheer lack of action it has had.” I continued. I wasn’t just trying to get him to be okay with me leaving; I wanted him to back me. I wanted him to support the decision and let me into the Confederation of the Territories.

“What kind of product are you going to present?” He asked me.

“This kind, except with women’s matches too. Solid wrestling built around real athletes with personality. The kind that I think has the most mass-appeal and isn’t offensive to anyone’s sensibilities. It treats the business and sport with respect.”

He nodded his head and reached for his coffee. He took a long drink, “Okay.” It was silent for a while. An uncomfortable silence but I didn’t want to interrupt when he was clearly thinking, mulling over what I had said, “I understand that you want to prove something. You want to leave a mark on this business and I can’t be angry at that. I also appreciate that you are giving me two months notice to find another announcer. The business needs more places for guys and gals to work. CZCW and ACPW in Canada have started using women but with the collapse of 4C and AAA, and the merger of the Stones and DeColts, we are down three companies for people to work. More companies mean more opportunities for guys to do what they love to do -- so I will support you. I’ll talk to the other members of the COTT and extend an offer of membership to you -- I’ve been wanting to introduce a Women’s Championship and with CZCW booking women, OLLIE using women and you using women we will have three companies that book women and will make that viable.”

I nodded my head. “I appreciate that --”

He held up a hand, “I’m not done. I would like you to consider booking a couple of guys from the roster here. Sean and Sione -- they’re good young talents. The last of the Bootcamp guys and I’d like to see them get more work. They don’t have developmental deals with TCW yet so I’d like to see them stretch their wings and improve. I’d also like you to use Nate. I’ve been wanting to use him in a singles role but his team with Tyrone has been too valuable. He could go places, he just needs to be seen more.”

I nodded again, “Of course, I’d be happy to use a couple of guys for you. I love the roster we have here and using some of these guys would be valuable on the roster.”

Sam nodded, “And I need you to back my play on getting Queens of American Wrestling in. I’ve been talking to Farrah for the past few months and she has shown interest in joining. Larry and Gil are going to be hesitant to let her in just because she’d be the only all women’s company in the league but she’s a good promoter and would really fit.”

“I think adding her in would be a great idea,” I replied and Sam stood up. He scratched at the stubble on his chin and stuck his hand out towards me.

I took his hand and he looked at me, “You’re going to do good, Marv. You’ve been good to me - you’ve been good to us. I’m glad I got to work with you for the past eight years. You’ve been an incredibly valuable member of the roster and you will be sorely missed.”

“Thank you, Sam. I appreciate you being so understanding,” We released hands and that was that. Our conversation had concluded and I left his office at Stanley Hall. He still liked coming to the Hall every day even though the Bootcamp closed. I shut the door behind me and leaned against the wall.

“Well, you’ve made the move now Marv,” I muttered to myself, “You don’t want to die an ordinary man. So now it’s all on you,” I pushed myself out of the way. We would launch the beginning of January and I had a lot to do to get ready for the show. So get ready I would do.

Company: Heartland Pro Wrestling

Company Description: Heartland Pro Wrestling, formerly Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis was founded at the tail end of 2019 by long-time Mid Atlantic Wrestling announcer Marvin Earnest. Earnest spent the previous fifteen years as an essential cog in the machine that is Mid Atlantic Wrestling. He was their lead announcer and was often consulted by Karen Killer, Jean Cattley, and Jay Fair with booking decisions. After fifteen years behind the desk, Earnest made the decision that he wanted to go into business for himself and thus Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis was born. It is the spiritual sister company of Mid Atlantic Wrestling and was started with the full support of Sam Keith and the Confederation of the Territories.

Acknowledgements and Info

It is important to note that in this diary, I created or made active several new companies to help flesh out the game world (this is something I always do)

I also created four workers, two managers and two women's wrestlers. None of them are overpowered or game-breaking and are done because I don't have a dojo (at least at the start, if it becomes financially viable I might add one) and I wanted to have some 'local' talents that I could integrate into the story. Mark Hyatt and Andrew Gibson are the managers and Talia Neema & Urena Frost are the women's wrestlers (special thanks to willr0ck for giving me permission to use his Rockverse renders for different people!)

I have also created some talents to debut in the database (and may or may not be adding more). They are not necessarily designed to be talents to come in and work for me, but talents to help fill out the game world.

I must give a special thank you to my wife, Eyreo (I convinced her to get a GDS account awhile ago and her relationship with me turned her into a wrestling fan. Score one for the wrestling nerds), who not only puts up with me in all other avenues of life, but encourages my hobby of TEW and has made most of the graphics for this diary, including all of the website-y graphics, the templates for the newspaper, all of show graphics you will see, and the templates for the show posters that occured in The Climb as well as will occur here. She’s an invaluable resource for me and truly helps me make my diary something aesthetically pleasing and not just word-vomit. A lot of the graphics were made in advance because of the story I'd like to tell and she was very patient for making them.

Togg, who made me a roster template for '16 that I will be repurposing for this diary as well as a default Wrestling News World template for wrestling news that I plan on using quite often.

Thank you to ReapeR, the Godfather of Belt design here on the GDS forums who designed the CWI Heavyweight and the CWI Tag Team belts that were originally used.

Thank you to Christian Shane, who made all of the COTT Belts you see used here (including a couple of specific of ones that were custom requested) as well as the new CWI belts that debuted with the 2020 April Showers. He is an incredible artist and I'm grateful for all of his work.
