Announcement

The June 2020 Diary of the Month marks the 4 Year Anniversary of me taking over the DOTM.

Thanks to a timely conversation with a moderator, going forwards, the winners of the DOTM (Rookie and Veteran, C-Verse and Real World) will have their Diaries pinned for the following month.

Would be interested to here what people think of this? Personally I think upping the amount of stickied threads to 8 seems like overkill.

The DOTM is already sticked throughout the month, so doesn't this do the job of directing people to the diaries that are being voted for? Realistically the diaries that are winning DOTM are already the ones with the most readers but of course there's often lots of great diaries that are just as good but don't have the following (and I say this as someone who has just won). I worry that having 4 diaries stickied will only serve to highlight and direct readers to diaries that need it the least.

I completely appreciate the sentiment behind having some form of reward for the winners, I'm just not certain on the idea, but I'm open to being persuaded and if I'm in a small minority then so be it!

Rookie C-Verse/Fictional

20LEgend's USPW It's such a big undertaking trying to book and write USPW, especially in this detailed format so to keep the quality as high as it's been is impressive.

Veteran Real World

Bigelow Cartwheel's ECW To me this is on the other end of the scale, the definition of short and sweet. Whilst I would normally hesitate to nominate a diary that was only going for a week or so of the month, it's posted a decent amount of shows in that time so I think still deserves the nod.

Veteran C-Verse/Fictional

Michgcs's CWF Nice unique format, a good mix of c-verse regulars with lesser used talent and got through a whole season this past month.

Showcase

Operation AntiVenom in La Estrella's EMLL

Really the whole diary deserves to also be in the general category and I'm sure someone will, but it was these luchalore posts that stood out to me most this month. It's in 4 parts so i'd recommend anyone to check that out.

Showcase

The Egg Hunt in Lloyd's RAW

I don't know if this actually a cinematic match or normal angles. So perhaps this should be in showcase? Or the whole event could go down for event? I don't know what Lloyd thinks? Either way a freaking egg hunt has to get a nomination from me! Especially when it was so well done. Edit: I'm going with showcase after speaking with Lloyd!

Showcase

Book of John segments in DevilbOy's TCW

It's a great all round diary this, but these smaller hype segments that have been in the last 3 shows have definitely piqued my interest, and whilst the storyline is far from over I think there's a lot to be said for create suspense before a debut/return/whatever it turns out to be.

Event

Red, White and Blue 2020 in 20LEgend's USPW Really had the PPV (or 'special broadcast event') feel. The main event was built well and delivered but it was a strong card top to bottom.

I completely agree with this. It sounds like a wonderful idea, but we don't need lots of stickied diaries.

Oh and thanks for the nomination :D haha

Whilst not the moderator Togg spoke to (I think), I know another idea that was privately floated was a mod tagging each DOTM with a [DOTM] tag in the title since we have magical powers. The sticky idea is a good one tho, mainly cause it means less work to be done. :p

Just for the audacity... Can I nominate you to add the [dotm] to every winner... :p Ha!.

There was that idea also put to me. Its also a great idea, from a mod point, I can imagine it being slightly more work...

If people don't like the idea, I'm always happy to listen to feedback. Before I switched to Google polls... There would be 3-4 stickies for dotm voting every month. I did switch to the Google poll system to avoid that. So I get that some may not like it cluttered again...

Maybe have a separate poll to highlight just one diary... Always happy to listen to ideas...

Meanwhile, let the dotm nominating continue :D. Knew I should have left it for the polling thread :p

I like the idea of a separate poll to highlight just one diary. I'd ad in that winners are stickied, but are then unable to win again for a certain period of time (maybe six months?)

I also like Mhero's idea. [DOTM] in the diary title. Or maybe some kind of image/badge scenario?

Rookie C-Verse/Fictional

[RAW Attitude!] by [christmas_ape]

Fantastic diary, it won last month, wouldn't be surprised if it repeated this month. Fast-paced, churns through stories like Will Beaumont churns through mothers. Forget everything you think you know about Pro wrestling, building feuds, working your way up to the PPV. This isn't a wrestling diary so much as it is a soap opera mistakenly posted to a wrestling board. This is RAW.

...Between you and me I'm actually not entirely convinced it's not a fever dream I've cooked up in my own head, because I just fail to understand how there are only a handful of regular posters in the thread. c_a, head over to modding forum and commission some trophies for predicting or something. Get the lurkers typing away at their keyboards.

Veteran C-Verse/Fictional

[SWF: The Evolution of Supreme] by [Eisen-verse]

Surprisingly underrated diary. I think people have grown used to the high quality output produced by Eisen-verse but he never fails to deliver. Having experimented with a couple of similar concepts in my diary (slidepacks, etc.) I can say that they take a fair bit of work to get up and running and looking anywhere near that good. E-v makes it look easy, frankly. I don't think I've ever read any diary the whole way through as I was only a lurker prior to sign-ups being required, but the ones that stick out for me personally in my memory were always the E-v ones I read, so happy to be following a long with this one.

Showcase

[Graphics] - [Overall Presentation] in [CWA: Canada's Unrivalled Giants] by [Xendarii]

Only one show so far, but even prior to the first show this diary has looked fantastic. That first show was a good one by the way, get in now and read it. If you haven't already, pick yourself a wrestler to be your representative and hope that Xendarii doesn't job them out on the B-show and embarrass you.

[shock Turn] - [Will Beaumont - Hide Your Mothers] in [RAW Attitude!] by [christmas_ape]

I'm kind of cheating because I'm also nominating the entire event this takes place in for an award down below, but I honestly wasn't expecting this turn. The sheer entertainment value is off the charts. It's going to be hard to top this and keep the momentum going for Will I think. I'm sitting here hoping that he just runs with the full extent of the gimmick. Lucha has Hair vs. Hair and Hair vs. Mask matches, so it only makes sense that with Hair as fabulous as Will's that we'll be seeing Hair vs. Mother matches on RAW in the near future.

Event

[The Main Event Hour! (2020.18)] in [RAW Attitude!] by [christmas_ape]

I've said a lot about this show already in the Shock Turn nomination, but it's fantastic from top to bottom. Highlights include a wedding brawl between Swoop & Captain Wrestling, the aforementioned smash hit from Will and finally Goode's hearty reaction to said song.

Historian's June Nominations

Rookie Real World

All Elite Wrestling by Hollywood -- while this diary has ended due to unforeseen circumstances, it was a very well constructed diary, it looked great, was clean and easy to digest. Hollywood was really doing some good work here.

Rookie C-Verse/Fictional

  1. APW: Australia Pro Wrestling -- the Keith Goggins story by HiPlus - I think this is one of those diaries that flies under the radar a bit, but HiPlus is doing an excellent job with APW and Keith Goggings' story
  2. SWF & RIPW - The Supreme Network by moafnsteel. This is probably my favorite SWF diary. I like the use of the Pro Wrestling Reporter to recap the SWF shows. It gives some snark and some critical feedback. The diary is moving/progressing nicely and presents both developmental and the main shows and keeps you fully informed on the whole Supreme World -- which I like.
  3. Mid Atlantic Wrestling: Not Just Another Feeder League by tryker2710 - A great presentation for my favorite CVerse company. Tryker has pushed her story along, developed characters in and out of the ring and dealt with TCW ending the developmental relationship!

Veteran Real World

WCW Saving the Legacy by Togg -- Togg continues to churn out quality shows that are presented wonderfully and really capture the era that he's presenting.

Veteran C-Verse/Fictional

  1. Jack Bruce: The Giant of RAW by The Lloyd- I think The Lloyd is the premier sports entertainment style diary writer of the CVerse. His shows are incredibly accessible. His graphics are clean and smooth and he has really captured RAW's style.
  2. BCG: The Lions of Puroresu by DarK_RaideR - I feel like DarK_RaideR has finally returned back to what I feel his strong suit is. Puro and BCG. The diary is very clean, the touring shows are easy to digest and the big shows feel like big shows. In under a month he has gotten through three big shows and tours.
  3. Totally Radical Beach Wrestling by Self -- Self is doing something way different than what I have come to expect from him/her. This feels like it's going to be a very fun project and is just getting off the ground.

Showcase

[New Diary], [shock Signing], [shock Push], [shock Title Win], [shock Turn], [Worker], [Face Worker], [Heel Worker], [Tag Team], [stable], [Champion], [Angle], [storyline], [Rocky Maivia], [Graphics]

  1. [storyline] - Steve Flash gets arrested and then quits CCW in The Roaring 20's are Back by King Slender. While Slender's show-out put hasn't been at a breakneck pace, his behind the scenes story writing has been excellent and the arc with Steve Flash from getting arrested for beating up Ray Snow to having to quit and patch things up with him was just an excellent arc to read and a great way to take a passing news article (which was probably just about Steve Flash and Ray Snow getting into a fight or having some heat between them would be my guess) and turning it into a character piece.
  2. [Graphics] Show presentation in OLLIE: Resurrection: by Willsky. This is great looking diary that feels very lucha to me and deserves more readers.
  3. [Angle] The Brawl That Would Never End in $4 Wrestling by Questlove -- this was just a brilliant piece of angles on a show. A brawl that continued through most of the night. Made me laugh and was just really smart storytelling for the style of company that Quest is presenting.

Match

St. Paddy's Day Brawl @ St. Paddy's Day Brawl in The Roaring 20's are Back by King Slender -- While not a super-high rating, this was just a fun match. It had some comedy moments, it got The Silencer over. Just a good piece of business.

Event

RAW Attitude Episode 532 in Jack Bruce: The Giant of RAW by TheLloyd -- this episode is where Swoop had to vacate the RAW TV Title due to injury and I thought it was an excellent episodic installment of RAW -- which has the burden of being TV only and I think Lloyd has done a good job of making the TV show feel must see and like you are getting weekly events that are worth the audience's time and this was just a good piece of business!

*I may be adding more Matches and events before the end of the nomination period to get to the three total.

Would be interested to here what people think of this? Personally I think upping the amount of stickied threads to 8 seems like overkill.

I'll have to agree, stickied threads shouldn't take up like half the first page. The diaries that win already have some support and will regularly show up on the first page and/or appear to be highly rated and/or seem to have a ton of pages/views/posts anyway. Speaking for myself, I've looked up past winners and thus discovered some diaries I'd otherwise probably wouldn't, so I'd assume people can do the same without the need of pinning diaries (though adding [DotM] for a month before the title sounds ok, if it's not a lot of work for the mods)

Surprisingly underrated. I suppose like Lebron in the early 2010s, there's a bit of voter fatigue going on where it's just generally accepted that you don't vote for Eisen-verse in order to give somebody else a chance to win, even within the Veteran category. In terms of pure polish and being the overall #1, no diary beats this. You can argue that there are other diaries that might have it beat in one area, with better matches, better writing or better presentation (though that last one is a hard argue), but evaluating the diary as a whole I'd find it difficult to hear an argument against this being the gold standard for the all-around total package.

If you've ever played as an American indie in the C-verse and seen the dreaded message after every show about having bad production values (because of RIPW with their high class production), imagine the rest of this board are the American Indie companies and Eisen-verse is RIPW.

While I do get what you're trying to say (and at times even shared the sentiment when I was nominated alongside Lloyd's NotBPW Stones/DeColts diary or Historian's RMW/CWL/The Climb diary) I'll have to point out the choice of words was poor. Everyone's trying their best and even the more competitive among us know they can't blame it on "poor production values", they'll just have to up their game and do better. Calling diary writers the American Indie companies as opposed to Eisen-verse being RIPW is a graphic, yet somewhat degrading analogy, at least the way I see it. Also, I bolded the part above it because I do believe that is exactly the reason we switched from a single to multiple votes. You can always vote for the favourites as well as your underdog darlings.

Anyway, nominations

Rookie Real World

Don't really follow RW diaries but I'm tempted to nominate The Thursday Night Wars. Still, as it was techincally posted late in June but hasn't really gotten rolling, I'll leave it to be nominated next month. Speaking of which, it's a multiplayer diary with 2 rookies and 1 veteran (Historian) so I'm not sure if it would fall under this category or Veteran Real World.

Rookie C-Verse/Fictional

EMLL: Strange Lucha Things by LaEstrella

I was shocked to read this is Estrella's first diary ever. It's well written, the presentation is slick, the booking is solid and on top of it all it tackles my favourite Mexican promotion. Surprised it's not been nominated yet, especially since everyone also seems to appreciate the LuchaLore and Operation Antivenom aspects of it.

Warrior Engine 2020 - The Family Legacy by FINisher

Big fan of hardcore diaries and FINisher's work with WEXXV in previous diaries. It's a R2G save so posts are sporadic, but they're good when they do show up and I'm hoping a nomination here gives FIN a boost to keep it going.

Veteran Real World

christmas_ape has already nominated Bigelow_Cartwheel's ECW diary, so I got nothing here but a vote of confidence from me as well.

Veteran C-Verse/Fictional

No Ordinary Men by Historian

While it does feel a bit like a re-run of the Climb, oldschool traditional wrestling is right up Historian's alley. His writing is as good as ever and he goes the extra mile to get the visuals looking better and better.

Showcase

Again, Operation Antivenom and LuchaLore have been nominated, so I'm all set here.

Match

El Toro de Oro vs La Estrella in EMLL: Strange Lucha Things by La Estrella

I've never before read a match and instantly thought "I'm nominating this for Match of the Month". That alone speaks volumes of how great it was.

<p>Disagree with the DOTM winners getting their diaries sticked. If they've won the DOTM then they already have a solid fan base on their diary, because if the didn't, they wouldn't have won in the first place. I can understand trying to help those diaries but I feel that if a diary is a winner, then they have the following and the posters meaning that the interested forum members are likely already following it</p><p> </p><p>

I also agree with the we don't want too many stickied posts.</p>

Go Not Gently Into That Coastal Zone by [infinitywpi]

The Coastal Zone by infinitywpi is a legacy in these forums so for him to be mentioned in rookie nominations is not quite right but will still do it as the latest entry continues the legacy beautifully.

$4 Wrestling - You Get What you Pay For by [questlove]

This has just started but his neat presentation and his impressive roster consisting of a bunch of unknowns completely drew me in.

Before I start populating my nominations this month, I want to thank Togg for all that he does for this community. The simple fact that you've been doing this for 4 years now, and you're still looking to improve your practice, is a testament to your importance here. No votes for me on this one as I've just recently begun keeping up on posted diaries. However, I don't think sticky posts are ideal, for the same reasons others have mentioned.

I do like the [DOTM] tag idea, despite it being some extra work.

Criminally underrated; I don't know why there's not much more activity in his diary. He's a great writer, and his storylines have really started to become extremely engaging.</p>
