Proudly Presents From the Memoirs of John Simpson It had been a hectic week. Despite the amazing profitability turnaround in World Championship Wrestling of late, no one in the front office or the locker room dared even think the task at hand was over. No one dared think the war was over. No one dared to contemplate that WCW was once again eternally safe. Everyone had previously been lured into that trap by suave executives and myopic marketing types, along with over protective wrestlers, and it nearly cost them all the one thing they mutually all over. World Championship Wrestling. Or more to the point, from a fan's perspective, competition to the smut factor of the World Wrestling Federation. This week, we had taken our show from Fresno to San Antonio, and visited a few spots in between for house shows. The United States wrestling market was booming, at least for World Championship Wrestling. We were experiencing hot crowds in centres where traditionally we were not always highly over. Areas such as New York, a multi generation style stronghold for the McMahon's had begun to open up to the more gripping style of product we were offering up. The San Antonio show went off well. It was largely an experimental show. A show to revisit and reset new storylines. It was a time when we seriously contemplated who our next big stars would be and how we were to sell them to the professional wrestling market. It was an exciting show that began to blend in towards our next Pay-Per-View spectacular, Wanted: Dead or Alive. The fan reaction was strong, they were happy to see Jerry Lynn and Samoa Joe and the likes being pushed, they were to see Dave Bautista and Randy Orton on screen. They were happy to see the battle of the giants of professional wrestling. It was a good night overall. Texas as a wrestling state is very historic in the overall scheme of things. Some absolute greats have come from here. Stan "The Lariat" Hansen for example, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, "Captain Redneck" Dick Murdoch, Terry Funk and the like. It had been home to the long running World Class Championship Wrestling promotion which delighted in show casing the tragic Von Erich family. It had been a permanent or passing home for the likes of The Fabulous Freebirds with "Bam Bam" Terry Gordy, Bruiser Brody, Abdullah the Butcher, "Ravishing" Rick Rude, a very young Sean Michaels, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Baby Doll, One Man Gang, Missy Hyatt, "Gentleman" Chris Adams and many more. It was a passionate wrestling hotbed. It's a little bit old school, and they like nothing more than a good brawl and a good fight. And that's the type of night we hoped to put on at Glycerine. Judging by the sentiments of the fans, I don't think we were too far off the mark. But with the celebrations of that night and our current position, came one major disappointment. Shortly after the show I received a call from "Mean" Gene Okerlund. We had been hot on the heels of a gifted young superstar in "Y2J" Chris Jericho. Despite our interest and best intents, Chris decided to decline a contract offer from us and resigned with the World Wrestling Federation. One of the major lures with Chris Jericho, as it had been with Mick Foley and The Giant, was to take back what was once World Championship Wrestling's prized, but uncovered jewels of the crown and highlight them back to our market, only this time, successfully. One of the tragic points about World Championship Wrestling historically is how it has been a training paradise for gifted young superstars, but historically the promotion has been narrow minded about how to turn those gifted athletes into genuine superstars, preferring to focus on the proven veterans of yesteryear. It is often a sense of frustration as to how good this promotion could have been if it had have successfully retained not only Jericho, not only Foley, not only Hunter Hearst Helmsley, not only Steve Austin, but the likes of Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Raven, Perry Saturn and Dean Malenko. Most of those guys made it elsewhere with the World Wrestling Federation, some tragically have yet to really do so. I speak of Dean Malenko, Raven and Perry Saturn. I genuinely feel for those guys in that they would have been crucial elements to my roster rather than languishing up there in Connecticut. But such is the way they were treated by previous management, it can only be a feeling of hope that one day their contracts lapse and a contract offer is established and executed successfully. The disappointing aspect was that we were informed that Chris felt it'd be a bad career move to come to World Championship Wrestling. I can only sincerely hope in some regards it is because of the previous mismanagement and the way he was treated that he decided that, because all key performance indicators suggest World Championship Wrestling is the promotion on the rise, at the expense of the World Wrestling Federation. With that in mind, given my sheer disappointment, I was only too happy to take up "Nature Boy" Ric Flair's offer of stopping off for a budweiser before heading off to a cheap, San Antonio hotel for the night. It's nights like this you become grateful for good friends and dedicated people like "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, but that you also miss the one you love who lies alone, waiting, with more pain than you could ever feel from missing out on a wrestling star. The pity of it all is this - it became clear later in my life that that was the case. And by then, it was too late. Treat your wives with respect, give her time, we all joke about picking up young trade ins when the older model falls down, but truly, the pain is irreparable. Yours Truly John Simpson

On the Net! For all your WCW news, only $4.99 per quarter subscription exclusive to www.wcw.com Well fans, what an action packed last few weeks we've had with World Championship Wrestling. I'm "Mean" Gene Okerlund, and I have a few stories to tell you exclusively to Mean Gene's WCW Hotline, now available for download on www.wcw.com!

First off on the rumour mill is the news that there have been prolonged discussions with a major superstar to join World Championship Wrestling. No news on who the wrestler is, but Tony Schiavone mentioned to me earlier that it could be the greatest signing in the history of our sport. They're strong words from an experienced commentator like Tony Schiavone.
I have it on good authority that "The Master and Ruler of the World" Sid Vicious is not too happy with things as they stand in World Championship Wrestling. It's rumoured that two things have happened; first, any pair of sharp scissors are to be kept from within a square mile of Sid at the decree of the WCW Board of Directors, and that he could go on a winning rampage in the near future. He appeared at a house show in Wyoming last week, and it was announced he was already at 46-0. After four more victories he is now up to 67-0. He's Sid, and he's dangerous.
Sadly, I have it on good shoulders that David Arquette will not be returning to World Championship Wrestling. The charismatic powerhouse wrestler was a worthy wrestler who even held the prestigious WCW World Heavyweight Championship. This is truly a sad day for professional wrestling.
In other news, Scott Hall is rumoured not to be under contract with World Championship Wrestling anymore. Due to the cut in pay, it is rumoured he may be cutting back from full strength Budweisers to lights. Big Kevin Nash tells me that's not the case and that his contract with WCW can't be torn up - I asked him why and he said "well remember, Bill Goldberg ate his contract." Of course, and I don't think WCW Executives will sweep Bill's toilet bowl to fish it out.
It is rumoured that Oklahoma could be making a return to conquer the cruiserweight division. Oklahoma is a strong hearted and well trained former WCW Cruiserweight Championship. We will keep you informed exclusively on this hotline as to any further developments.
BREAKING NEWS: We can reveal the rumour I told you about last week - that in classic WCW tradition two classic world known superstars, SD Jones and Tony Garea, will not be locking it up at Wanted: Dead or Alive. It will interesting to see what this disaster will do to the Buy-Rate
Watch out for WCW's newest VHS release: Rare Footage of Hulk Hogan JOBBING! Never before seen footage. Other releases planned were "Ultimate Warrior's greatest moments in WCW", but that was soon nixed by WCW Marketing when it was revealed he didn't have any.
It appears WCW President John Simpson has canceled one of Eric Bischoff's upcoming wrestling concerts featuring Jerry Lee Lewis. It appears that Disco Inferno (desperate for a bone to re cement his wrestling career) was happy to play the gimmick of Jerry Lee Lewis, but Turner Standards and Practices vetoed any idea for Disco to marry a 13 year old minor to mirror the classic rock star. Also, marketing had some slightly concerns about Jerry Lee's mainstream marketability after all these years. One WCW insider was coy about the lack of success surrounding such acts as Megadeth, KISS, DJ Ran, and Master P saying "Rap is Cr@p became more freakin popular than No Limit Soldiers, we're not going to let Jerry Lee Lewis appear on Nitro and then have someone cool like S Club 7 appear on RAW and trump us in that regard". S Club 7, might have to try their music, sounds funky.
And that's it for this dazzling edition of Mean Gene's WCW Hotline. Value for money? You bet!
A Recap - What WCW Means To Me To all the fans of The Death of WCW? I know there's been a slow down recently, but while a number of things have taken priority, I have spent a bit of time thinking about what it is that drives me to reminisce about World Championship Wrestling, and the current state of the industry as we know it. I got so caught up in thinking about it, that I re-read the Death of WCW book, and am about to commence reading Ric Flair's To Be the Man. If there's two guys who share the bullseye on the 'Who Are the Franchises of WCW', it's Sting, and Ric Flair. To me, March 26, 2001 was a fateful day for professional wrestling as we know it. It was the "Season Finale" of Monday Nitro. It'd never return. It was a show that was supposed to showcase the end of World Championship Wrestling. Aside from the match that defined WCW was about for so long - Flair versus Sting - one last time - the show was dominated by the McMahon's. It was evident to me watching that show that a potentially rich angle was going to be a McMahon schmooze fest. I was told by my friends to stop being silly, Vince McMahon is the crem-de-la-crem of promoting wrestling, after all, that's why he won the Monday Night Wars and monopolised the industry. While certainly the World Wrestling Federation had some great moments, such as the advent of Hulkamania, the Radicals, the great TLC action c. 2000, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin versus The Rock, it had also had it's fair share of Wrestlecr@p, which is so effectively portrayed in another diary on here. Vince McMahon is a marketing genius, and he has certainly esculated his empire against all odds, from his own father telling him to not lose sight of his roots and not nationalise, to overcoming the drugs scandals of the early 1990s. He's a man who also has effectively known how to pass the torch from generation of wrestler to generation of wrestler better than any other promoter. But if there were three guys who could ultimately stuff up an invasion angle, it's Vince McMahon, Eric Bischoff, and Vince's former pied piper, Vince Russo. World Championship Wrestling was not killed by outlandishly good booking from the McMahon's. It was harpooned, and then gutted internally. It was spit roasted by those within. It was not so much the booking was so good from their opposition, it was that WCW's booking was so atrocious. Having moments such as David Arquette as WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Madusa as WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Ed Ferrara as WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Daphne as WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Hulk Hogan winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from the finger poke of doom, having the Ultimate Warrior freak Hulk Hogan out in a backstage mirror incident where only Hulk could see the Ultimate Warrior, which if you really look into the skit it infers that Hulk was crazy, Bischoff was crazy, and worse, the fans were all crazy, the inability for New World Order hierarchy to lose making WCW look completely and utterly stupid, faux pas like Tony Schiavone lauding crowd figures that were below what they actually were, Stevie Ray talking about how a Nitro show was being seen by 5,000 people on TV only for Tony Schiavone to make the save that he meant there were 5,000 people in each house watching Nitro - the mistakes, the errors, the trials, the tribulations were so comical it was near on impossible for a competitor NOT to put World Championship Wrestling out of it's misery. I tuned in week in, week out to WCW for a few reasons;

Sting. No matter how badly Starrcade '97 should have killed his career through absolutely woeful match booking OR Hulk Hogan politics, they could never really kill Sting
Chris Benoit
Eddie Guerrero
Raven
Chris Jericho
Dean Malenko
Rey Mysterio Jr
Juventud Guerrera
"Nature Boy" Ric Flair
Arn Anderson
The rest of the great influx of foreign talent - Ultimo Dragon, Jushin Thunder Liger, La Parka, Yuji Nagata, Masahiro Chono, The Great Muta, Chavo Guerrero Jr and others
They were the stars. They were the heroes. Not Kevin Nash. Not Scott Hall. Not Hollywood Hogan. Not Eric Bischoff. Not Vince Russo. Not Kevin Sullivan. Not Scott Steiner who received his biggest push due to people genuinely being fearful of him. Not Sid Vicious. Not Randy Savage. At various stages, I marked out for practically all of those men, but most of them I marked out for in the 80s, or early 90s. The business is cyclical, it needs revolving, new talent need to be put over. Benoit, Guerrero, Raven, Mysterio Jr and the likes should have been the men who were main eventing by the mid to end period of 1998. The foundation was laid. The New World Order needed to be killed off. The very foundation to do was slap bang right in front of them, it was too obvious. And it would have allowed for Chris Benoit to take the reigns. That foundation was the New World Order. But due to egos, and straight out shocking booking, and hatred for the man who embodied WCW most - Ric Flair - that never came to fruition. The main focus needed to change back to what WCW, the NWA, Mid Atlantic, Jim Crockett Promotions and Georgia Championship Wrestling seemed to mostly always be about - wrestling. Me personally? And why I'm like a few hardcore WCW fans who never lost the fire? I grew up watching Hulk Hogan battle Andre the Giant. I grew up watching Mr Perfect. I grew up watching Jake the Snake Roberts. I grew up watching Macho Man Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior. In my neck of the woods all we ever got was the World Wrestling Federation. Then, a new world was promoted to us down under - World Championship Wrestling. Good wrestling. Cruiserweight carnage. All the abovementioned. The initial stagings of the New World Order. No doubt, it was great in 1996, still good in 1997, by 1998 it was past it's due date, in 2001, it was almost an in house joke that it kept resurfacing. Despite all that, even at the end, there was a place for WCW. It could have, and should have been the defining moment of even the World Wrestling Federation. It should have been the biggest fued of all time. It didn't eventuate. I mean hell, one of the key players in World Championship Wrestling jobbed out to the Undertaker's wife for God's sakes. WCW should still be alive, Vince McMahon should have proven that he could live up to his comment on the final Nitro that he could turn WCW if he wanted to. Either he didn't want to, and his investors have a good right to know why he didn't maximise WWF's profitability, or he too, couldn't. Raw V Smackdown doesn't have the same bite. ECW does nothing for me. It was never as big as World Championship Wrestling. Yet it sits on the shelf, collecting dust. Yes, the McMahon's won the war, they are the kings of wrestling. But again, the losers? You, me and anyone else who wants a competitive industry that makes the competitors give the best product available to stay in business. That's what any competitive industry should be about. So while Death of WCW? has had somewhat of a hiatus, it will be back in full colour soon, ready to try and right the wrongs. It may be trivial, it may not even be entirely accurate or well simulated, but it's my way of touching up how I feel WCW could be so much better even in 2001. Big stars, putting over younger, more energetic talent, and the usual suspects...

Amen! I'm almost misty eyed to read this. Alot of people try to claim that no good ever came out of WCW and that alot of us are crazy for missing it at all. But even at the end of the line there was some greatness, the Cruiserweight division was fun till the end, Booker T in the main event, Scott Steiner and the Magnificent 7, hell even Ernest Miller as "Commisioner" were all great things to watch. Yeah there was crap but everything has crap, it was our crap dammit, and I miss it more and more every day. This Dynasty has been a great tribute and a wonderful look at what could have been. I cannot wait till it returns.

Beleived Lawler hated Kaufman and Etc. LOL. Anyways I have enjoyed your work here sir. Been reading Death of WCW myself and was dissmayed by the events. Kinda clears thigns up for me. And you are correct WCW should still be here today but the total disregard to the fan base is what really killed it in my opinion. But it sure was a hell of a run wasnt it?

But the cattle was not as good as before. The problem I think really was their peak, 1998, where they didn't advance things to make the next lot of cattle better. I think the real big nail in the coffin came when the Four Horsemen presented a real elite, and strong way to potentially destroy the New World Order with a great mix of charismatic veterans, and some of the best in ring talent in the world in Benoit and Malenko. But through selfish politics and the real in your face hatred of Bischoff and Flair, it didn't eventuate. And that's sad. They'd already slammed some nails into the coffin before that, Sting should have not only won at Starrcade '97, he should have gone over. The difference between the two things is huge. Hulk Hogan never knew the difference. Getting Bret Hart for $3m a year, and not knowing how to use him. Unreal. But we still had cruiserweights etc., the potential was still there, and in my biased eyes, there was still more potential to market WCW under the WWE banner than there ever was or ever will be to market ECW. No disrespect, but WCW at one stage was the number one promotion and had a lot of market appeal even at the end.
Ill second the Amen. I tue grew up watching Hogan/Andre. It looked good though, certainly seemed to blur the lines and made it look as though kayfabe was alive and well in the central US areas. I wonder whether we'll see a competitive golden era again, like we did with the age of the territories, and the war between WCW, WWF and ECW? It's a good book, I hope you're enjoying it. There's a lot of moments where you can laugh, and almost feel like crying at the same time because its funny how bad it got and sad that so many crucial yet fixable problems ended something we obviously all had a profound love for - a strong, competitive wrestling industry.

Well, we've seen some interesting comments on what the Death of WCW meant to wrestling fans. The below are some moments mentioned as being nails in the WCW coffin, I'd like to hear your thoughts on how serious these mistakes were, which were the most serious, and what other mistakes were made in your opinion causing the death of a competitive wrestling market.

Starrcade '97. Sting v Hollywood Hogan. Sting is the biggest face in the industry and appears to be the only real rival to the nWo. After the longest build up, Hulk Hogan hits the leg drop. 1...2....3. No kick out. Normal speed count. Bret Hart comes down, knocks Nick Patrick out and restarts the match because the match in his eyes had a fast count ending. Sting regains control after showing no offence previously, puts Hogan in the Scorpion Deathlock. Hogan doesn't tap. Hart asks for the bell claiming Hogan says he quit. Hogan loses, but still wins. Sting is made to look like a fool and joins the rest of WCW as losers to the nWo.
The use of Bret Hart. Turning him heel after potentially being the biggest face out given the recent screwjob? WCW desperately needed some allies, nWo needed to be disbanded, so what did they do? Have Hart become Hogan's lackey.
David Arquette as WCW World Heavyweight Champion
Vince Russo as WCW World Heavyweight Champion
Madusa as WCW Cruiserweight Champion
Oklahoma
Daphne as WCW Cruiserweight Champion
The scrambled storyline that had no one knowing who had power of WCW between Ric Flair and Roddy Piper
Ric Flair winning a match to become WCW President forever, only to have Eric Bischoff to reclaim control by telling everyone he had regained control
The never ended "who drove the hummer" story
The Hulk Hogan "big bald son of a b!tch" shoot/work
Sid Vicious's streak - losing at house shows, but still being like 60-0, then the next week being 67-0 at a Nitro despite jobbing at house shows, then losing by DQ and going to something like 71-0
Jobbing Goldberg to booker Nash
Portrayed Scott Hall as a drunk - when he was one
Investing truck loads of money in Dennis Rodman- having him no show, and then rewarding him with more shows despite being an outhouse wrestler
Hog Wild PPV's - .... where there was 0 ticket sales because it was out in the open, but went on because Bischoff liked checking out Harley's
Believing Ted's money pot would roll on forever
Continuously jobbing Ric Flair out in places like Charlotte, North Carolina
Paying massive money for the likes of DJ Ran, Master P and the No Limit Soldiers
Holding the likes of Lanny Poffo to inflated contracts, and never using them - at one stage over 200 wrestlers under contract
The end of the New Japan alliance due to Eric Bischoff's need to control the New Japan nWo and how it was portrayed over there
Having Big Poppa Pump Steiner Recline 4 cruiserweights at once killing the cruiserweight division
Ernest Miller talking about James Brown, never delivering on his promises, and then James Brown shows up at a PPV unadvertised drawing 0 extra buys because no one knew about it
The whole vanilla midget booking philosophy on Benoit, Jericho, Mysterio, Malenko, Juventud, Guerrero
Allowing Raven to walk out of his contract
Having Randy Savage smack Torrie Wilson in the face
The Chris Jericho thing where he was locked out, the door opened when he pushed it (it was supposed to stay locked) and some numb nutz nearby opened a door trying to find out what Chris Jericho's problem was
The Chris Jericho-Wrath run around, and then walking back having a candid, friendly chat thinking the cameras were off
The night where on Nitro the World Title changed hands I believe from recollection FOUR times
Allowing the likes of Road Warrior Animal to use the Cruiserweights as punching bags again killing off the cruiserweights
The Goldberg "rape" story where he was arrested, and then released because Elizabeth made it up. Goldberg went to a police station initially advertised as being just down the road. However he couldn't make it back within half an hour to the arena to receive his World Title shot.
The finger poke of doom World Title change
Jobbing Vader out easily to the incoming Hulk Hogan after him being near unbeatable
Creative control for the likes of Hogan
Cards where the first hour under Kevin Nash featured no wrestling - on a wrestling show
The entire abomination that was Thunder
What were the most costly mistakes? What other ones can you think of? It's always an interesting, yet heart wrenching topic.

I personally believe the biggest mistake Bishoff and WCW did was signing most of the "maineventers" to creative control contracts. as if it wasnt going to course some problems I bet WCW wouldnt of been so bad backstage if they didnt have Hogan and that calling the shots! I was a hugh WCW fan and I didnt know about Sid losing at house shows lol I always thought it was weird that one week he was at 50 wins than the next week he was on 57 wins You know what I would really enjoy if you wrote something on the good things that happend in WCW. It always seems the bad things over shadow the good things that happend with the company

Yeah the Kauffman thign was quite a feat to pull off but hell I was a snot nosed kid too so,,lol. I am enjoying the book. It brings back a lot of memories both good and bad about the past. I might get nailed but I liked the finger point of doom. Felt it was a major swerve. Unfortantly at that time however NWO was just a watered down version of The Horseman. But it still got you to talk about it which is what their job was right?. Arquette as champ,,,yeah major tune off. Forgot about abot Steiner sqaushing the cruiserweights like that. Normally would not have a problem with that as long as they got some measure of revenge. But alas,,a no go. As Basmat stated to many wrestlers creative control and those said wrestler not putting on decent shows. Ah,, the list can go on and on. Should a ,,would a ,,could a, But atleast WCW lives here. Again a great work and read as well sir. I tip my hat to you.

First off, please don't take what I'm about to say as me not being a WCW fan, because I favoured WCW through the Monday Night Wars, which was unusual as I'm British and the television coverage here favoured WWF (as I remember it). Honestly, I loved WCW and wish so much that it hadn't died. However, I believe the first steps to it dying were what made it the mega power in the first place. To compete originally with WWF, the like of Nash, Hall and Hogan were needed. The nWo thing to start off was in my opinion the greatest angle in history. But WCW didn't have the pull of WWF. Yes, it had money, but the likes of Hogan wouldn't wanna sign for a company with (in TEW terms) less prestige. What if they got jobbed out for a smaller company? What would be the point leaving WWF? The creative control thing I think was a neccisity to compete with WWF at the start. But ultimately, the line between putting it in a contract that they can say no to certain decisions and letting them run the whole damn thing is suprisingly thin if those with C.C have egos the size of Hogans. And once the old school hoss style mega stars were in control, the future of the company (vanilla midgets) never stood a chance. Personally, that's my opinion on the basis of the death of WCW. They were clearly many, many things that also helped the death of WCW(Russo as booker etc) but the ball started rolling with the power of guys like Nash. And also, many of the problems relate back to their power (fingerpoke of doom, Starrcade etc.) But that's just my opinion. And oh yeah, still a great diary man. :)

while it is nothing compared to the ones listed, the fact that Nitro was replayed right after the main showing was a strange move on their part. during their 3 hour shows, I ended up just watching the first hour of nitro then switching to Raw and when the show was over I fliped back and watched the replay of nitro. one not listed would have to be eric calling out vince on nitro because back then during the "real war" (not this tna attempt against the wwe) fans could flip to raw for the next few weeks to see if Vince would answer thus move away from nitro.
