<p>The Barbed Wire Deathmatch was stupid from start to finish to me, nowhere near dangerous or violent enough to validate the concept. Maybe I've seen too much Onita, too much Sabu and too much CZW to really buy into this stuff now? It was just hokey and silly. They're great wrestlers but they were hamstrung. The finish sucked, they used to have clever finishes that subverted expectations but this is just WCW 1996. Worse yet, neither Mox nor Omega were sporting any wounds on Wednesday... they could have worn a few plasters to sell the effects of such a dangerous match concept.</p><p> </p><p>
The post-match sucked too. I don't care how they're twisting it, it's one of those where if you can't do it properly then don't do it altogether.</p><p> </p><p>
I loved the end of Dynamite though. Give me Wardlow unleashed! Give me Santana & Ortiz as adrenaline-fueled babyface killers!</p>

NXT is a bit curious at the moment. This Wednesday's episode has both Balor vs. Cole and Shirai vs. Storm for the two titles. Bear in mind, we're maybe two weeks removed from TakeOver and they have another scheduled for three weeks time. So, why the hotshotting? Maybe they think AEW is going to be a bit weak but I imagine that both matches could have been saved?
I've heard rumours of NXT moving nights to Tuesday, probably because USA Network's patience has worn thin for paying for the rights to a program that sometimes doesn't even chart on the demos. But I wouldn't be greatly surprised if they were pulling the plug all together. It's been 18 months, surely they figure the audience maybe isn't there for this show?

I don't see it being Punk or Lesnar. It would be a colossal bad idea to have Punk or Lesnar and not promote in advance to pop a buy rate.</p><p> </p><p>
Edit: Just realised I said nothing about the show! The Shaq match went as well as it could have, I thought it was well executed. Loved the Brodie Lee tribute on the Powerbomb, loved the double table bump. Jade looked decent but still very much a work in progress of course, she has poise and personality, the rest will come.</p>

I watched RAW last night (Monday, February 22) and I noticed that people were booing Sheamus. Why is that? I don't catch the show every week, so maybe I missed some sin that Sheamus committed.
He turned heel on Drew in January, I think it was the first RAW after the Rumble but not 100% sure.

New Japan matches are full of inconsequential limb work and they get critical acclaim from fans and critics alike. I'm not sure anybody applies Chekhov's Gun any longer.

When I see Rey Fenix in the kind of form he was in on the last episode of Dynamite I genuinely start to believe he is the best wrestler on the planet.

She looks different she looks like a badass and most people didn’t see last year’s Wrestlemania including my friends so this was their first exposure to her.</div></blockquote><p> The thing is though, WWE is an environment built around weekly TV where some of the talents are going to get 5 minutes max to show what they can do. You have to maximise that time and I think that's why they lean into personalities instead of wrestlers, it's why they go with Bianca instead of Rhea, it's why Billie Kay looks to have done better than Peyton Royce after the breaking up of the Iconics.</p><p> </p><p> NXT really does them dirty in this respect as so many of them establish themselves in 15 to 20 minute matches and then arrive on RAW to be given 5 minutes to establish themselves doing a dueling promo in the ring in front of a live audience.</p><p> </p><p> Until the environment changes and they start making NXT more character-centric and they start giving the wrestlers on main roster TV more matches and making them longer, the Kairi Sane's and Shayna Baszler's of the wrestling world will carry on struggling in the WWE environment whilst the Carmella's and the Alexa Bliss's (both decent in their own right but hardly great wrestlers) will carry on thriving. </p><p> </p><p> That's how I feel about Rhea anyway, great wrestler but it's the rest of her game that truly matters and I'm concerned she's not there yet and it's probably why they're holding her back instead of having her on the main roster as one of those talents that's signed but never put on TV. Until the time is right, I'd rather she carry on getting reps in NXT and carry on working on her game until she can become as adaptable as Sasha Banks has become. Sasha is great at everything, they need to get Rhea to that point and considering she's only 24, she has all the time in the world to get game.</p>

I think the ship has sailed on Rhea Ripley to be honest. After WrestleMania last year was the time to do it instead of giving her a year in NXT's purgatory.
I don't know what's going on but moving to the United States from Australia and then being on the road all the time has got to be a very difficult commitment to make and I wouldn't blame her if she opts to stay in NXT just because it means she gets more time in one place. She also seems more interested in being true to herself instead of following the company line. Look-wise she leans more and more into that metal culture and I'm sure she'd be tatted from head to toe if it was her call. I hate to conform to stereotypes but the piercings, the make-up, the short hair, the gear she wears... none of it is the look of a wrestling star. She's trying to be niche instead of going for broad appeal.
Now Bianca Belair... always a superstar. She has the pedigree, the look, the talent, the readiness. It was always a matter of time with her and everything that's happening to her right now is exactly what she's always wanted. I don't feel the same way with Rhea Ripley. I get the impression that Rhea's spot is wresting NXT TV main events, having barnburners with other girls who can go as hard as she can go. She doesn't strike me as the type that would be happy with 2 minute matches on TV and spending more time talking than wrestling. The instances where she's had to get by with character alone have felt like the wrong fit. She's a wrestler, a helluva wrestler and a brilliant athlete but she's not an actress, she's not a personality, she's not a character and that might put a ceiling on her progress.

I just wish Luchasaurus could have more of a 'mean streak', if you will. He's got a great look and could be a wonderful powerhouse character.
I'm hoping that Luchasaurus getting his mask ruined by FTR is the catalyst for some kind of makeover. He really could be something if handled correctly.

Slightly bummed out that watching on FITE I didn't get the action during the commercial breaks. Makes it hard to judge most matches as there was a few minutes I didn't get to see.

I guess there's also an argument to be made that considering COVID was going to impact business anyway, this was the time to book things that they otherwise wouldn't. I can see that side of things.

<p>I don't agree with the unification of the belts nor having somebody hold both. I understood that they did it for business reasons to sell the first two-leg Wrestle Kingdom in 2020 but that deal was a harder sell this year. I'm aware that COVID played a part but the second night's attendance was reported as noticeably down compared to the first night (nearly halved) and the card in general was much weaker on paper. </p><p> </p><p>
The whole experiment hasn't worked for me. I'm not sure who was supposed to benefit but if it was being used to put Naito over and then Ibushi, it's questionable whether it was necessary in the first place. The jury is still out on whether it helped EVIL, he never even got to make a successful defence so... who knows.</p><p> </p><p>
It makes all the sense to split the titles from Ibushi and keep them seperate from one another for the forseeable future since the main event scene is more stacked than ever now.</p>

I like the idea of Chuck vs. Miro and the overall direction, will be nice to get plenty of Chucky T and the OC during Trent's injury lay off.
Wardlow going over Hager clean was the right result. Helluva match, but the War Dog needs to do something about his hair.
Sting coming down to the ring to help his son
you love to see it. Cody vs. Sydal was one of those weird matches where the action was good but it was practically meaningless and just there to promote the Go Big Show and get Snoop Doggy Dogg involved in some way. Bit of an odd match in that it wasn't objectively the worst but the one I cared the least about this week on Dynamite. The splash and pin was a horrible spot that I could've done without.
Abadon vs. Shida was a horror show!... but not the kind of horror show I expected. I was a little iffy on the idea of Abadon wrestling for the title live but the match was well put together and Shida carried it quite well. Tay & Anna getting promo time afterwards was welcome too, but oh boy... NWA title match > AEW title match, and not for the first time either haha.
Omega vs. Fenix was an absolute banger.
Bullet Club reunion was what it was, I've never been a big fan of Gallows & Anderson but I expected they would go down this road at some point. I just wonder if they did enough to sell that these guys used to team up before AEW because that little detail might have been lost on some.

I thought they did a great job in Season 1 of showing off how large the Star Wars Universe was and then just kiboshed that in Season 2 in favour of getting nostalgic... again. The Star Wars Universe is literally galaxies and loads of planets but everything comes back to Palpatine or the Skywalkers or Han Solo. They cannot help themselves, nothing can happen without the involvement of like the same 5 people all the time. <img alt="

I'm not terribly excited about Mando vs. Bo-Katan if that's the new arc, I thought the show was always going to be a Space Western about these two adventuring and that Grogu being returned to the Jedi would be the end of the series. I guess we'll see.</p>

It'd be dope if AEW does a Brodie Lee Memorial tournament or something.
I think it would be fitting if said tournament was similar to the Young Lions Cup or the Top Prospect Tournament in that he always did seem the type of guy that felt elevating others was more important than this own push. Seems fitting that his legacy be used to benefit others in such a fashion.

I teared up during BTE but not in a sad way, more that the tributes were heartfelt and those that knew him felt utter gratitude for the time they got in his company. I can't recall an outpouring of love and support like this, I was only like 10 when Eddie died but it feels comparable to that, nothing but good words and admiration for who he was.
As for his talent, I've said it here before, he was convincing in a way that nobody in AEW was. I got the impression from Talk is Jericho that he was always unsure of himself but you'd never have known it watching him work.

They're doing Rey Fenix vs. Danny Limelight on Dark next week, that has serious banger potential.

Yeah, I didn't think it was a particularly strong show this week either. It feels like they're spinning their wheels until it's time to start the build for Revolution.
I'm glad Cody won a match with that cutter, it's obviously a much better move than the Cross Rhodes. Nice to see Angelico on Dynamite.
I swear Hager's only involvement in the 12-man tag was the finish and my god his F-10 looked awful. I wonder if the original finish was Wardlow doing that move and MJF stealing the pin but I did feel sorry for Griff Garrison having to take that.
The tag division is odd at the moment, it seems like a team get on TV for a week and then they're getting a shot. Shouldn't The Acclaimed have to run through the other tag teams first and be ranked #1? It would be nice if we could get a longer build for these matches so we actually have a storyline to get invested in or a match to get excited about instead of just doing it with little build.

If that was a MOTY contender then wrestling must have been really bad this year. That match was horrible. I was not going to post my opinion about it because I did not want people to think I was trolling. I did not want to be told to stay out of the thread if I do not have a pro AEW opinion (Which how come nobody ever took that stance in the WWE or TNA threads? Why is the AEW thread the only place where negative opinions on the company are not allowed?).
But yeah that match was just not very good. The ending was beyond bad and the whole sitting in the chair thing was just dumb.
Where was the logic to that? How could that make any sort of sense? Why would you do that in the middle of the match? Why not go for the pin?
Yes I am not a fan of Omega, but I do like Moxley and I watched the match. Well mainly because nothing else was on, but I also wanted to see if maybe I was wrong. Maybe if I saw Omega in a match with someone I like, then maybe I could say, "Hey this was not that bad." But no, they just reinforced my opinion.
The funny thing is that part that was really bad was Moxley's doing. He was the one who brought the chairs in.
It is always good to see Sting. But I am not sure what they can do with him. I don't think he can wrestle anymore after what Seth Rollins did to him, though I could be wrong. What other roles could he possibly fill?
I am not sure if he will even bring eyeballs to the promotion. He did not do it for TNA and that was when he was still able to wrestle.
The sitting in the chair spot was Moxley's head going out of the game.
Notice that Mox jumped Omega from behind at the contract signing, despite there having been no proof that it was Omega who jumped Mox the week before. We don't know who jumped him, it probably wasn't Omega but Mox seems to believe it was even though the confrontation with Kingston told us that he doesn't know who did it. Why stare down Eddie if you know Omega did it? Perhaps it was somebody Omega put up but the rivalry was made personal when the Champion lost their head.
He wanted to grind Omega into the dust instead of simply beating him. Remember when Khabib fought McGregor and we all assumed that it would be a fight on the mat, but then in the third round Khabib just stood up and went blow for blow with McGregor? That was what Moxley did, he put aside the advantage to try and prove a point. Only the difference is that wrestling matches aren't scored on points so proving dominance counts for little in this particular arena. It's all about the 1, 2, 3 and Mox forgot about detail, he lost his professionalism.
Mox had also started to believe his own hype, his promos went from him being a fighting champion who would take on all comers to gradually starting to talk himself up as the best wrestler in the world. He had started to believe he was invincible and that carelessness was the reason he didn't put Omega away before the Cleaner could enact his Plan B. Callis bailed him out, but Mox found out that a competitor like Omega only needs an inch and they can take a mile. There's no way Mox should have let it get to that point, the entire story was that Mox was superior but simply unable to put his ego and his emotions aside to get the job done.
I liked it, but you are entitled to your opinion of course.
As for Sting, he will wrestle. At least once, anyway. He's listed on the active roster as a competitor. Having Sting on board is yet another example of AEW signing a popular guy just to put other wrestlers in their stratosphere. Jericho and the Inner Circle, Matt Hardy and Private Party, Taz and Brian Cage pulling in Ricky Starks and Will Hobbs, Alan Angels and Preston Vance being with Mr Brodie Lee and the rest of the Dark Order, Cody and the Nightmare Family. They'll probably stick Darby Allin with Sting in some way, I think they'll have a match for the TNT title since Darby can do all the moving and bumping. They definitely had Sting notice that Darby only painted one half of his face...
