The David Mack Chronicles: The CGC Era!

Recommended Posts

Saturday night 2nd Week of December 2007 We had just finished our December event that marked my year anniversary at NYCW, and the usually staid NYCW crowd was still buzzing about my match with Ota and the KONY winner Akima Brave's match with Grandmaster Phunk. I was sitting in my lockeroom going over the show and some ideas for 2008 when Stomper walked in, talking to another older gentleman who i recognized as George DeColt! Stomper brought him over and said "Kid, I want to introduce you to Mr. DeColt. George and I go back a long ways, and when he heard me talking about you and the things you have done for us here in NYCW, he decided he wanted to meet you." Mr DeColt then spoke " Son, Stomper hasn't shut up about you for the past six months, both about how well you have done in the ring and as the booker. I came to see for myself what you could do and I have to say I was impressed, by your match as well as by the overall show tonight. So I have come to a decision. I want you to come work for me at CGC and take a lead role on the booking commitee as well as a spot on the roster. I have already cleared it with Stomper so you can still continue your duties here as well." Stomper chimed in "Hell, kid, with us only doing one show a month, I know you have a lot of free time, and this would be a fantastic opportunity for you. George will even make a plane available for those nights when both our shows are close together so you won't miss anything." Just like a year ago, I was flabbergasted! Not at CGC wanting me as a wrestler as I knew I had talent and a good future barring injury, but I couldn't believe that a large company like CGC would be interested in me as a booker! Then I remembered something, and despite the incredible opportunity being offered, I just had to ask. "I'm intensely grateful for your interest in me and the opportunity you are offering, but doesn't your son Alex handle the booking duties for you? I don't understand why you would want me to book for you." Mr DeColt replied " It's like this son. Alex has an excellent mind for this business and has done a good job handling things for us, but I feel he has kind of gotten a little too cautious and complacent recently. I need some new blood and new ideas, and if you can get this old warhorse Stomper here to actually start to move into the 21st century, then you sound like just the kind of person I need to help us take the next step for our promotion. I have already talked with Alex and even though he will still be on the booking staff, he has agreed to give you an opportunity to take the reigns and see if you can get us over the hump and past NOTBPW as the #1 promotion in Canada. So, what do you say son?" What could I say? This was an incredible offer, and an equally incredible challenge! The exposure CGC already gets would be good for my personal career, and NYCW wasn't taking a lot of my time at the moment, even with us almost tripling our audience recently. So I stood up, shook the hand that Mr DeColt had offered and said "You have got yourself a deal, sir! Thank you for this opportunity and I won't let you down!" DeColt then said " That's great son. I will give you a little time to get ready and enjoy the holidays, and I will see you in my office bright and early after the new year!" DeColt and Stomper then walked out of the room, discussing some old stories while I sat back down, still in somewhat of a daze by what had just happened! In just a little over two weeks, I would be making my start in the great white north of Canada! I just wondered if I knew what I was getting into!

CGC! CGC! Seriously, not only was your NYCW diary one of the best I ever read, CGC is my favorite C-verse Canadian promotion, and I can't wait to see you take it to National.

Tuesday January 2nd 2008 in the CGC offices in Vancouver, British Columbia. I entered Mr. DeColts office and was greeted by the patriarch as well as the former booker, his son Alex. Despite the fact that I was technically replacing him, Alex was cordial and shook my hand. We all sat down and the senior DeColt said he knew I was used to having almost complete autonomy back in NYCW, but as CGC was a much larger promotion, things would be somewhat different here. I still had the final say when it came to the actual booking, but I would work with a staff, including Alex, who would come up with ideas and suggestions for me, as well as some guidelines and hiring restrictions from Mr. DeColt as well. The owner handed me a roster list and a memo of some of the guidelines he was talking about. First and foremost, he stated we were in this business to make money, and to that end we needed to increase our funds level by 2.5 million over the next two years, or a little over $100k a month. After NYCW , those kinds of numbers were mind boggling to me! Alex told me not to get overwhelmed by the amount, as with PPV and house shows, as long as I didn't get crazy, there shouldn't be any reason why we couldn't reach that goal. Mr DeColt then emphasized that this was critical to my continued employment. It didn't matter squat if I made us the most popular company in the world if I couldn't make a profit at it! Second, this company was built around the DeColt name. George and Alex both admitted that it wouldn't be in the best long term interests for the main event scene and the titles to be totally dominated by the DeColts, but they still needed to be a major presence in the company and as part of the agreement to step back, I had to maintain Alex's popularity level at least above a C+ , which obviously meant he would need to still be involved in big storylines and still get some big wins at least for the next two years. Also, both men told me that with the youngest son Ricky holding the main title and starting to make his own name, I needed to maintain his momentum above a C+ level as well for the next year and a half. I was somewhat dismayed by this restriction as although Ricky was very talented and had every sign of a great future, at this point there were a half dozen better candidates to carry the company. Still, I would find a way to try and make it work. Finally there were two other guidelines that weren't necessarily restrictions, but more strong suggestions. One, the senior DeColt wanted an increased emphasis on ring psychology and didn't want to hire or extend anyone who wasn't at least a C- level or above. I could override that on a case by case basis, but the owner stated that I had better have an excellent reason to do so. And finally, being an entertainment based promotion, they didn't feel that the japanese super junior style was a good fit for the promotion, so for at least the next 2+ years, they didn't want me to hire any super junior style wrestlers. Again, I could override it on a case by case basis, but they better be superstars if I did. Since I didn't have a real choice if I wanted to stay, I agreed to the terms and took a look over the roster to see what I had to work with. Main Event : Dan DaLay One of the members of the main heel stable, The Elite, and owed his position to his friendship with Alex as well as a good deal of name value despite an average set of ring skills. Alex DeColt A straight brawler, but with the legendary DeColt charisma to connect with the fans. Eddie Chandler The leader of the Elite was easily the top heel in the promotion, with a combination of charisma and ring talent to serve as a focal point for the company. Jack DeColt The third of the four brothers and also has some technical ability to go with the brawling and DeColt charisma. Steve DeColt The oldest brother and probably the most gifted in the ring of the four. What seemed to be needed now was some strong storylines to build up our popularity outside of British Columbia. So I went home and worked out a few ideas, then met with the booking staff the next day to get their suggestions and start making plans, as we had a tv show this sunday, and a PPV in less than three weeks.

Good luck with this, I was hoping someone in the 'top tier' of dynasty writers would do CGC, because I was considering a CGC dynasty for ages, but in the end there were just too many DeColts for my liking :p I had zero ideas for Steve, and only one or two lame ones for Jack. So I defected to your younger, more rebellious brother. :p Let's see what a *good* writer can do with all the DeColts. ;)

And Sports Entertainment is a whole new experience for me, so hang on for the ride and we will see how it goes! :D

Rating E+ The main purpose for this was to help address a face\heel imbalance in the bottom part of my roster. I had too many heels and not enough faces in the opener and lower slots, and Quibble was the best candidate to turn around. So the tag champions show a ruthless streak and Quibble gets a fairly successful face turn, although the crowd probably doesn't care too much about it at the moment. The Specialists defeated Christian Price and Grimm Quibble in 1:56 when Bobby Thomas defeated Grimm Quibble by pinfall with a Special Delivery. And right now, you are at the back of the line, Chandler and will have to wait your turn!" Chandler tells the commisioner that he just made a big mistake, and since DeColt won't give him what he wants willingly, Chandler is going to have to take matters into his own hands, starting now. Then Chandler grabs the elder DeColt by the collar and yanks him over the commisioner's desk, pummels him, and then locks the commissioner into the Fabulous Stretch. Chandler cinches in the submission hold as George DeColt's face writhes in agony, all the while Chandler is yelling " This is all your fault! The entrance curtain parts, but instead of Chandler, it is the Elite's manager Adrian Garcia who responds. Garcia tells the DeColt brothers that the Elite have no problems in facing the DeColts tonight, and in fact Steve and Alex can serve as two more object lessons for their decrepit father and brat brother Ricky. With that, Eddie Chandler and Dan Dalay jump out of the crowd behind the DeColts and sneak attack them in the ring. After a few moments of Chandler and DaLay bashing Steve and Alex, the DeColt brothers rally and the bell rings to begin the match. Rating B- Continuing our main storyline and the feud between the Elite and the DeColts is still one of the most popular with the fans judging by their response tonight. Eddie Chandler and Dan DaLay drew with Steve & Alex DeColt in 11:36 following a double disqualification. Match Rating B- DaLay and Chandler try to build off of their advantage at the beginning and control the first couple of minutes of the match. But the DeColts rally back, and their anger at the savage attack on their father earlier fuel their comeback. The action goes back and forth for the next several minutes until finally things erupt and all four participants are in the ring brawling with each other. The referee tries to restore order, but fails and has no choice but to DQ both teams as the fighting between them continues. Despite DaLay not being as sharp as usual, all four men show a lot of passion and fire as they continue setting up the main storyline. Despite the match being over, all four men continue fighting as Chandler's vicious assault of the DeColt patriarch has ignited a fury in his sons and the DeColt-Elite rivalry has erupted into a war between the two factions. It finally takes the entire lockeroom emptying to separate these four as both DeColt siblings are still trying to go after the Elite members. Rating B- The crowd continues to buzz for the newest chapter between the DeColts and the Elite as their reaction was strong all night for the main storyline. This should keep them tuning in while I continue with the other storylines and build up to my first PPV here in a couple of weeks. Overall Show C TV Rating 0.45 Decent first show , but I think we can do better. Despite the continuing popularity of the DeColt-Elite saga, that wasn't enough to carry the show as the other storylines still need to garner the fans interest. Feedback from the next day showed that most people thought it was good, but nothing special. Our ratings came in at .18 behind NOTBPW's and shows we still have some work to do to catch up to them.

Nice show, especially good ending, if only you had a second main event match in the upper 'C' range or even 'B-' and you might have gotten an amazing show. Still a good one, but that has been a problem I've seen with CGC and NOTBPW. Once you get beyond the DeColts/Stones, the rest of the roster kind of falls apart. Don't get me wrong, the DeColts/Stones are excellent workers, but because the focus is so much on them, the rest of the upper card completely revolves around them which can make versatility and variety hard to get by. You can only match the DeColt/Elite or Stone/(rest of upper card) so many times before it feels like there is not much more you can do with it.

Rating C- Setting up the main event for the PPV but the crowd must still be unsettled from the previous segment as the reaction wasn't as strong as it should have been. Ricky DeColt defeated Ryan Powell in 12:43 by pinfall with a DeColt 45. Ricky DeColt makes defence number 1 of his CGC World title. Match Rating C Another decent match as Ricky defends his belt against the up and coming Powell, but still nothing special. DeColt builds some momentum heading into his encounter with Chandler. As Ricky DeColt gets his hand raised in triumph, Eddie Chandler enters the ring and nails DeColt in the back of the head with a forearm shot. Chandler then slams around DeColt a couple of times before locking in the Fabulous Stretch and submitting DeColt to the same agony that Chandler inflicted on DeColt's father a week earlier. After a few minutes, Chandler finally releases the hold and then grabs the World title, holds it aloft over his head, then contemptuously drops it on the still laid out body of Ricky DeColt. Rating C+ Building some more heat for their title match at Elimination. Overall Show C TV Rating 0.44 Another average show. Hopefully the PPV does better despite the lack of serious buildup beforehand. Our show ratings were about the same, but NOTBPW increased the margin to 0.22 difference this week, giving them a 50% lead in ratings.

Well, it had been an inauspicious start so far. Two lackluster tv shows out of the gate weren't doing wonders for my confidence, and I seriously hope that Mr DeColt wasn't regretting his decision to hire me. Still, it isn't the tv shows that everyone talks about, it is the PPV's and if I could pull off a good one, then I would feel much more comfortable in my position here. Despite only having a couple of weeks to build up anything, I still think we had a decent set of matches to sell the PPV with. So this is what the CGC website and the tv advertising were showing as the lineup for CGC Elimination. Ed Monton vs Trent Shaffer (c) for the CGC Canadian Championship The distinguished veteran Monton has taken exception to comments made by the young, arrogant Shaffer and demanded a match for the belt. The ever confident Shaffer has agreed, vowing to retire Monton and prove his own superiority. But is the c0cky young star overconfident? Monton is no slouch and has held every belt in CGC in the past, including 4 World titles. He may be in the twilight of his career, but will be motivated to prove himself and shut up the younger man. Will Monton begin one last run on top or will Shaffer live up to his boasts in the ring? Youth Energy vs The Specialists (c) for the CGC World Tag Team titles. Both of these teams have been rivals for years, and spent most of 2005 and 2006 trading the titles back and forth. Now their rivalry gets renewed as Rivera and Nelson look to regain the titles for a third time. But Thomas and Johnson's alliance with the Elite has given them a boost of confidence and a meaner edge as they have dominated the tag scene for the past 7 months. Can Youth Energy end that dominant streak or will the Specialists defeat their old rivals one more time? David Mack vs Ryan Powell The newcomer makes his debut in CGC against the rapidly rising Ryan Powell. Mack has shown he can be a big fish in the little pond of NYCW, but how will he do when thrown into the ocean with all the sharks. Ryan Powell is a young man just starting to come into his prime and has been tipped as a future main event star in CGC. Can David Mack pull off an upset in his primetime debut in CGC or will he find the waters here more dangerous? Jack DeColt vs Eric Tyler This is a real grudge match as DeColt is looking for revenge following Tyler making advances and then 'inadvertently' knocking out Jack's fiancee Hotstuff Marie. Tyler has shown little to no remorse for his actions, but if Jack DeColt thinks he is going to have an easy time getting payback, he may be in for a big surprise. The DAVE icon Tyler is also a former 2 time CGC World Champion, and despite being 47, is more than a match for anyone in the ring. Can DeColt get his satisfaction by beating Tyler, or will the 'Traditionalist' add Jack DeColt to his victim list? Alex DeColt vs Shooter Sean Deeley All the DeColts are looking for some payback against the Elite following Eddie Chandler's savage attack on their father George DeColt. Alex faces the newest addition to the Elite stable, the amateur technical specialist Deeley, who took over the departed John Maverick's role as the group's submission specialist. Although this looks like a mismatch on paper, Deeley's stock has been on the rise in CGC for the past couple of years, and a high profile victory like this would catapult him up the ranks quickly. Still, he has to face an angry Alex DeColt, who will be very personally motivated to beat the hell out of Deeley. Steve DeColt vs Dan DaLay Another match in the renewed feud between the DeColts and the Elite sees two former CGC World Champions face off once again. Both men have a long history against each other, with DaLay having actually beaten Steve for his world title victory several years ago. This is a very even match with a lot of bad blood that could go either way. Ricky DeColt (c) vs Eddie Chandler for the CGC World Championship Chandler finally gets his rematch against the man who beat him for the World title 4 months ago. But to get it he went the despicable route of attacking and inflicting a painful submission hold on the DeColt patriarch. This has made it personal for the champion. Four months ago, Ricky achieved the biggest victory of his career so far when he defeated Chandler for the belt. Can he do it again or will his anger and rage make him vulnerable to the calculatingly cruel Chandler and cause the belt to come back to the Elite? Ed Monton vs Trent Shaffer (c) for the CGC Canadian Championship Youth Energy vs The Specialists (c) for the CGC World Tag Team titles David Mack vs Ryan Powell Jack DeColt vs Eric Tyler Alex DeColt vs Shooter Sean Deeley Steve DeColt vs Dan DaLay Ricky DeColt (c) vs Eddie Chandler for the CGC World Championship

Ed Monton vs Trent Shaffer (c) for the CGC Canadian Championship I don't think you want on straps on Monton right now but he's great for building up some one like Shaffer as a legitimate competitor. If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion, if it doesn't break an owner goal bring in Jon Jetson and reteam him with Monton they make a great trianing tag team. Youth Energy vs The Specialists (c) for the CGC World Tag Team titles YE has the build but I don't think they'll make it on their first try. David Mack vs Ryan Powell Not sure you want to push yourself right away and even with his loss I think Poweel right now is at the top of his game. Jack DeColt vs Eric Tyler Straight win showing Tyler as a real tough guy who doesn't need to cheat to be better than anyone. Alex DeColt vs Shooter Sean Deeley Straight win to give the DeColts some strength. Steve DeColt vs Dan DaLay Cheatin win to show the Elite will do anything to win. Ricky DeColt (c) vs Eddie Chandler for the CGC World Championship DQ win to show that sometimes anything means going to far.

Ed Monton vs Trent Shaffer (c) for the CGC Canadian Championship Shaffer wont 'retire' Monton, but I don't seem him losing the belt either Youth Energy vs The Specialists (c) for the CGC World Tag Team titles Could go either way when these two teams face each other, I think Youth Energy will win, but it'll be by DQ meaning that The Specialists retain the belts. David Mack vs Ryan Powell I'm torn on this one, on one hand you aren't mega pushing yourself this time round and Powell is a rising star, but then on the other hand I'm not fully convinced that you'll be content with just drifting along in the CGC mid-card as a sort of jobber to the stars. Coinflip decision. Jack DeColt vs Eric Tyler I see this one ending as a double DQ or double count-out draw, something to keep this very old school type of feud going. Alex DeColt vs Shooter Sean Deeley Alex gets the big win, as the DeColts strike the first blow against the Elite. Steve DeColt vs Dan DaLay Steve also gets the win over long time rival Dan DaLay, as it all seems to be going the DeColts way. Ricky DeColt (c) vs Eddie Chandler for the CGC World Championship However the leader of the Elite will pull out when it matters, by defeating Ricky for the title. You've already given hints, that you don't think Ricky is ready to be the top man in CGC.

Ed Monton vs Trent Shaffer (c) for the CGC Canadian Championship - I sense this is only the beginning... Youth Energy vs The Specialists (c) for the CGC World Tag Team titles - Not to Youth Energy. If the Specialists retain it'll force you to sign some new tag teams, and my God to CGC needs new tag teams :p David Mack vs Ryan Powell - Only one person has more momentum than Ryan Powell, and you're not going to waste it on a match with no build up at all, against yourself. ... are you? :p Jack DeColt vs Eric Tyler - Some sort of screwy finish to prolong the feud. Besdies, one of 'em has to lose. Alex DeColt vs Shooter Sean Deeley - Deeley hasn't done anything, besides win a lower level title, to even deserve to be here . :p The only reason he's even on the card is because he's the only member of Elite that doesn't have a match. Steve DeColt vs Dan DaLay - Just to keep it even between the DeColts and Elite. Ricky DeColt (c) vs Eddie Chandler for the CGC World Championship - Ricky's a crap champion, but I don't see you Jerichoing it off him quite yet. Maybe next month...
