Vitor winning and Aldo's spectacular victory made it a hell of a night of fights. If you watched tonight I feel like you got to see something special. The first UFC I can remember watching at home, on my own, just sitting back with a nice cold Pepsi and some Chinese food, enjoying the fights. Loved it. Barboza looked great. Silva looked great, and the bad call won't blemish his career. Palhares is quickly becoming a killer at MW, there's definably the fear factor when fighting him as well. Rumble got what he deserved, I guess. Shame that it'll be tainted by some shoddy stand ups. Aldo looked like a monster, and this could be his coming out party. Great night, all in all. The Shape Posted January 15, 2012 Share Posted January 15, 2012 Man, kind of wish I'd watched it live now, twice I skipped forward a minute or so only to be met with a spectacular KO by Aldo and Barboza xD Johnson is a dick but those stand ups were absolutely ridiculous, really can't stand Belfort either. But that Aldo KO was hilarious, one of my favourite moments in a while, absolute dismissal. Am I crazy for thinking Palhares could be very dangerous even to Anderson? He's definitely got something different for Anderson to worry about. I'm all for a Palhares/Silva fight this time next year assuming they both keep winning. bigtplaystew Posted January 15, 2012 Share Posted January 15, 2012 The problem anyone has against Silva, be it Sonnen, Munoz, Palhares, whoever... is the mystique. Somehow, some way, Anderson takes fighters out of their game just being in the cage with them. I've seen some truly great and experienced fighters look like completely different versions of themselves against him. Sonnen did the best job at this. Sonnen just implemented his game that got him there and he nearly won the fight. Now I know Silva was dealing with injuries that may or may not have affected his ability to stop the takedown, but we saw Sonnen do what Sonnen does. I think thats the key. And sheer ability of course. You gotta have what it takes to beat a guy like Silva. Does Palhares have those skills? I can't honestly say "no". In a year, as BH said, if he wins he'll climb the ranks and earn his shot. Next, I'd like to see him get a real nice fight against a more high-level opponent. Maybe a guy like Belcher. Daffanka Posted January 15, 2012 Share Posted January 15, 2012 Palhares is cool because he's got such a dynamic submission game and isn't scared of doing things like pulling reverse mount in order to get the tap but he spent about 14 and a half minutes closing the distance against outside striking specialist Dan Henderson, if the fight with Silva happens it's going to be Abu Dhabi all over again. There are tons of places in the USA and Canada where they cheer for finishes, regardless of who got finished. If you finish a native spectacularly, I think there's a good number of places in the USA or Canada that cheer for the spectaculr finisher. It's just natural. Like brashley says, it's everywhere in sports, and for good reason. Btw it's true that Silva is more atmosphere then anything else. Obviously he's champion material, but the way he dominated... That's clearly putting fighters out of their game like someone suggested earlier. He does that pretty well. But I like it. One day.... And you've been to all these places and listened to the live crowds to know who they are, and are not, cheering/applauding/booing, yes? Because what you don't see/hear on the TV paints a very different picture. Favouritism is no more or less blatant in Brazil than it is anywhere else in the world. Just so happened that there was a particularly loud, vocal crowd last night. Mike Pyle was applauded by some sections of the crowd on his way out of the Octagon. So was Mendez. Now, if that want to do that, that's their prerogative, but it's not my thing. And two, I never said Brazil was more favoritist than other places. I said I didn't like their sheer favoritism towards their own fighters. Or rather to be clear, their overt and sheer favoritism. As for Rumble, whatever. Etim falling like a tree is something I'll never get tired of watching. Number two for KO of the Year will probably go to Aldo's knee thanks to the momentum of Mendes moving back at the same time he got hit making it look like the knee knocked him off his feet.
