Season One, Week Seven

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

July 13, 2010, 7:10 a.m. local time

Just another morning, like some 10,000 others he had lived through. Yet even through his darkest days—when his first fiancée had left him just before their wedding, or when his second perished in an explosion that he knew deep inside himself was meant for him—he never felt as much self-doubt as he did at the moment.

As the undisputed last-place wrestler in The League's inaugural season, he could hear the whispers behind his back everywhere he went. He could see the doubt, the ridicule, and the scorn in the eyes of fans wherever he went. Not that he couldn't blame them, if he had to be honest with himself. He heard the same whispers in his own head.

Face it, Will. You just don't have it anymore. You've already hit your peak; it's all downhill from here. You should have stayed retired.

On instinct, he went through his normal morning routine, not really paying attention until he looked in the mirror, gazing at the reflection. He could see the weariness in the face, the withdrawn look in the eyes. It was as if he was staring into the face of someone who's already admitted defeat.

And why not? One win in six tries; four matches out of the lead in the division with eight matches to go and three out of the wild card spot. It's all but over for me anyway; the least I can do is try to play the spoiler for the rest of the season. Face it; Templeton isn't about to slow down, Maynard's all but assured a spot no matter what, and I can't even beat anyone in my own division. Maybe I should....

Without waiting any longer, he picked up his cell phone and dialed ten numbers he had memorized when he was approached to join the League back in May. He knew the man on the other end would be up; he was an early riser too. Two rings became three before the line connected. "Mr. Prydor, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

Will exhaled softly. "Sir, I think it's safe to say that given the results so far, I'm not at the caliber I used to be. I've become nothing more than a laughingstock, and that's something I know we both never wanted."

"And that means what, exactly?"

"It means that after this season, I'm done. There are plenty of technical wrestlers in The League as it is; every single one of them is faring better than I am. The fans can do far better than watching someone like me stink up the place."

There was a pause on the other end of the line. "I've watched you for a few years now, Mr. Prydor. You're a self-described realist, someone who looks at what's in front of him and bases a decision off of that. Let me describe what things are looking like from my end. As it stands, I see a turnover of four wrestlers, including yourself. I know of at least two more who wish to join, putting us at ten for season two. If this is the sort of thing I can expect, The League is going to fold within the next year. I'm not one to take failure too well, as you know. I may need you to come back, abysmal performance or not."

"Sir, with all due respect—"

"Mr. Prydor, allow me to propose a counter-offer, if you will. After this season, I can grant you a conditional leave, with the understanding that if needed you may be drawn back into active competition at any time if we have an uneven number of wrestlers on the roster. In return, I'm offering a downside of $10,000 a month—half of what's currently set aside for you and every other worker each month in a high-yield account—and limited facilities to keep in shape should I need you.

"You were there in the beginning, Mr. Prydor. I know you have faith in the system, despite your limited track record with it. I'm asking that you continue to have faith in me."

There was a pause as Will thought it over. Ten grand a month was about what he was used to earning anyway, plus the interest kept on top of it. "And you're certain that your other business has no objection to this? I would think that if they caught wind of how much we make—"

"My business is my own, Mr. Prydor."

"Fair enough. I accept on one condition—drop the clause about the training facilities. I did better when I was on my home turf between shows. If I'm going to be held in reserve, I'd rather fall back on my tried-and-true habits."

"Done. I'll have Terrance Warder send the necessary documents to your residence next week, since we'll be in Washington."

"One last question, sir. I know a Terrance Warder who works on the local police force where I live. Any relation?"

The man on the other end of the line chuckled. "A mere coincidence, Mr. Prydor, and nothing more. If that will be all...?"

"Indeed. Thank you, sir." Will disconnected the call, his brow furrowed in thought. So, about four months, at $20,000 a month, plus interest...looking at about $82,500 for this bit of work once the season is over. Nice bit of change...and I'm sure that certain women can buy plenty of clothing with that much money.

Now, if only I felt like I deserved it....

\___(^)___/

The figure stood in front of the window of his office, watching the sun rise over the horizon. He sighed, the ramifications of the phone call he had just finished hitting him. Prydor had been the first to sign, the first person to believe that this would be something special, and now he wanted out of it. The man firmly believed that it was just a low morale issue; that if Prydor had managed more than one win in six weeks this conversation may not have even happened.

In a way, it saddened him. He'd seen Prydor in the past, was actually watching the show right after his fiancée died and he left more of himself in the ring than anybody ever expected. He could relate to the turmoil Prydor was feeling—he had dealt with it too, once upon a time. In fact, it had caused him to fall off the radar for a long time, which suited him just fine. He'd much rather profit than actively run the business, though exceptions could be made from time to time.

A knock on the door interrupted this train of thought. "Sir, the board meeting starts in ten minutes in the conference room. I have your notes organized and typed up at my desk."

"Thanks, Carol."

The door closed behind him, and the man took one last look at the sun rising. The start of a new day, of new dreams, of new deals. Then, with a nod, he turned away; there was business to be done.

Due to this league I have started playing this game again for the first time in who knows how long. I forgot how fun it could be. I also forgot how frustrating it can be. Lucky for me so far my guy has got more of the 5%-20% pin or sub chance victories then loses. Plus the 3 or 4 times I have had someone hit me till I was in danger before I got one move on I somehow won.

Live from Montreal, Quebec!

Good evening, everyone...Bob Sinclair, sitting at ringside as always with my broadcast partner, Frankie Garnett. Bob Sinclair: Nolan with a brave effort, and that’s going to put pressure on Maynard to win if he wants to keep his outright lead in the division.

Frankie Garnett: I cannot believe that Warrior had that much of an advantage after waking up from the Regulator, and yet couldn’t put it away! That just solidifies my belief that Templeton’s got the Alpha Division won already!

Breaker (3-3) vs Maxx Skabb (3-3)

Amelia Williams: Our next match is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, weighing 251 pounds...Breaker!

Bob Sinclair: Breaker needs a win here to keep up with Tarik Nolan and Robbie Maynard, and keep his playoff hopes alive.

Disturbed’s “The Night” hits, as the opponent walks out with a crazed sneer on his face.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from the Orange County Correctional Facility, weighing 291 pounds...Maxx Skabb!

Bob Sinclair: This is a good chance for Skabb to overtake Warrior in the Alpha Division, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: I don’t see it happening. Skabb’s too one-dimensional in his offense; Breaker’s going to make quick work out of him.

GAMMA DIVISION: Sean (3-3) vs Johnny Triumph (2-4)

Bob Sinclair: Our other divisional match is up next, and it brings with it an interesting twist, Frankie.

Frankie Garnett: Yeah, if Triumph pulls out the win tonight, whoever ends up leading the division will have a losing record of 3-4. I think we can officially name it the weakest division, Bob.

Bob Sinclair: In any event, let’s go to the ring to get us underway!

Amelia Williams: Our next contest is a Gamma Division bout, scheduled for one fall! Coming down the aisle, from Charlotte, North Carolina, weighing 230 pounds...Sean!

Bob Sinclair: Sean comes in holding the Gamma Division lead, but only by a thread with practically everyone else in the division right on his heels.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from Des Moines, Iowa, weighing 228 pounds...Johnny Triumph!

Bob Sinclair: After last week, I think it’s no surprise that Triumph is determined to bounce back from the loss he suffered to Diamond.

Amelia Williams: Our next contest is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from Portugal, weighing 231 pounds...SGRaaize!

Bob Sinclair: This is a must-win for both men. Raaize needs this to save any hope of a playoff run, Phoenix needs this to gain any sort of momentum.

Normally “The Instinct” would be on the speakers at this time, except that this week the man who uses that as a theme has decided to come out to no music, perhaps in a bid to change his fortunes.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from the End of Nowhere, weighing 367 pounds...The Phoenix!

Amelia Williams: Here is your winner, at five minutes and fifty seconds...The Phoenix!

Bob Sinclair: Phoenix desperately needed that win to salvage anything out of this season; Raaize may have a hard tme getting out of the hole he’s now in.

Frankie Garnett: Oh, good, back in time for the main event and I missed the big waste of space. That works.

Bob Sinclair: Why do I bother...?

Bob Sinclair: Templeton comes in with a bit of breathing room—he’s guaranteed to walk out of Montreal with the Alpha Division lead regardless of the match result.

Frankie Garnett: But you know he’s just aching to get that little bit of cushion in the standings, and make it that much harder for the others to catch up!

Amelia Williams: His opponent, coming down the aisle...from Liverpool, England, weighing 251 pounds...Robbie Maynard!

Bob Sinclair: Maynard has gotten into the face of the official and is giving him an earful!

Frankie Garnett: Maynard seems to think it was only a two count, Bob! He looks ready to explode on someone!

The ref turns away from Maynard, having heard enough, but Robbie is having none of it, dragging the ref into the Merseyside Maul! The ref’s screams of pain can easily be heard on camera, and that’s enough to draw Templeton back to the ring to break up the carnage. Maynard sees it coming, though, and sidesteps a Power Surge attempt, a dark look coming over his face as Templeton turns around and walks into what appears to be an Armageddon Lariat! Both the official and Templeton are down and out on the mat, as Maynard stares at them both with unmasked anger.

And it is on that shot that the program ends.

Season One, Week Eight

July 17, 2010

http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae344/ShadowedFlames/GDS%20League%20Stuff/BeyondRingsideBanner.jpg

Hello, everyone, and welcome to a special mid-season edition of Beyond Ringside! It's been seven weeks since the start of The League, and tonight we're going to cover the highlights, the low points, and everything in between. There's a lot to get through, so the sooner we get started, the better!

Note that for this week, the layout of the column will be slightly different, due to the recaps.

The First Half: By Wrestler

Breaker: Breaker's enjoyed a bit of success against this technical-heavy roster, coming in with wins over technicians SGRaaize and The Phoenix, but having lost to three other technical workers in Robbie Maynard, Johnny Triumph, and The British Warrior. Nothing to write home about in terms of performance; as he comes in the middle of the pack performance-wise. In a tough Beta Division, he may be on the short end of the stick when the playoffs roll around, especially if he contines to approach his training in a lackadaisical manner, according to my sources.

Current Record: 4-3, Third Place in Beta Division

Season Highlight: Week One victory over SGRaaize (B-, 11:20)

Season Low Point: Week Four loss to The British Warrior (F, 7:00)

Diamond: The high-flying female from Scotland has had a rocky first half, though she has two wins over current powerhouses The British Warrior and Johnny Triumph. Right now, her main saving grace is that she's in the Gamma Division and is thus still in the hunt for the playoffs given how tight the divisional race is. Of all twelve competitors, she seems the most at ease in the air, which is fitting given her small size.

Current Record: 2-5, Last Place in Gamma Division

Season Highlight: Week Six victory over Johnny Triumph (First Blood, A*, 23:00)

Season Low Point: Week One loss to Shawn Arrows (Hardcore, F, 6:20)

Johnny Triumph: The most entertaining member of the roster despite his heelish attitude, Triumph enters the second half with the highest average match rating among the twelve competitors and is tied for the most Matches of the Night with Maxx Skabb (three). Slow start, but the Gamma Division race is tight enough that he's still in the hunt. In my opinion, he's the best technical wrestler despite his losing record, and will only improve with time.

Current Record: 2-5, Third Place in Gamma Division

Season Highlight: Week Four victory over Diamond (A*, 23:20)

Season Low Point: Week Seven loss to Sean (C, 11:20)

Maxx Skabb: Skabb has been hit-and-miss all season, and really needs to focus if he wants to make a run at the playoffs. He reaches the halfway point as arguably the most balanced wrestler of the group, but that has yet to turn into solid wins for the former inmate.

Current Record: 3-4, Third Place in Alpha Division

Season Highlight: Week Two victory over Sean (A*, 26:00)

Season Low Point: Week Four loss to Robbie Maynard (F, 4:30)

Nuclear Templeton: He’s the only person at 6-1 coming into the second half of the season. He’s been outpowering most everyone he comes across, and his simplified moveset takes no prisoners when the bell rings. He’s all but assured a playoff berth at this point.

Current Record: 6-1, First Place in Alpha Division

Season Highlight: Week Seven victory over Robbie Maynard (B, 13:40)

Season Low Point: Week Three loss to The British Warrior (C, 17;20)

Robbie Maynard: The former “Mr. Perfect” comes in having lost two of his last three. His seemingly invincible aura has gone by the wayside, but he still hangs on to the Beta Division lead for the moment. A likely candidate for the playoffs this season.

Current Record: 5-2, First Place in Beta Division

Season Highlight: Week Three victory over Diamond (B-, 11:10)

Season Low Point: Week Five loss to Sean (B, 11:00)

Sean: Currently leading the rather abmysal Gamma Division, Sean was truly first noticed when he won the cage match in Week Five to dethrone the previously undefeated Robbie Maynard. With the only winning record in Gamma Division, it’s hard to say whether he can hold on until the playoffs.

Current Record: 4-3, First Place in Gamma Division

Season Highlight: Week Five victory over Robbie Maynard (B, 11:00)

Season Low Point: Week Three loss to SGRaaize (E, 5:10)

SGRaaize: The Portugese native has had little luck, struggling in the Beta Division. Playoff advancement seems unlikely; will be lucky to get to an even record on the season.

Current Record: 2-5, Last Place in Gamma Division

Season Highlight: Week Five victory over Shawn Arrows (D, 6:40)

Season Low Point: Week Seven loss to The Phoenix (F, 5:50)

Shawn Arrows: A surprising second in the Gamma Division, Arrows may yet have a chance to sneak into the playoffs. It’s not going to be as a wild card, naturally, but being one match behind Sean in the division could be the key that turns things around for him.

Current Record: 3-4, Second Place in Gamma Division

Season Highlight: Week Seven victory over Diamond (A*, 26:20)

Season Low Point: Week Three loss to Tarik Nolan (F, 9:30)

Tarik Nolan: The second-place man in the Beta Division, Nolan is tied for the top record in the division and is easily in contention to take the top spot. Whether he can stay on form, or take advantage of a careless mistake, remains to be seen.

Current Record: 5-2, Second Place in Beta Division

Season Highlight: Week Five victory over Johnny triumph (A*, 15:30)

Season Low Point: Week One loss to Robbie Maynard (F, 9:40)

The British Warrior: We're seven weeks into the season, and my sources have not even been able to get close to Warrior's camp to figure out the secret to his success. In the thick of the Alpha Division hunt, it's hard to predict where he will go from here; many people name him as a surprise in the first half standings.

Current Record: 4-3, Second Place in Alpha Division

Season Highlight: Week Five victory over The Phoenix (C+, 17:00)

Season Low Point: Week Two loss to Diamond (F, 9:00)

The Phoenix: I'm not alone when I say that I'm rather disappointed in Phoenix's performance over the first half. He co-holds the worst record in the League, and barring a miracle isn't going to present much of a threat in the second half. He may be able to link moves together, but he needs to be on the attack to do that in the first place. I predict a long, frustrating second half of the season for him.

Current Record: 2-5, Last Place in Alpha Division

Season Highlight: Week Two victory over Johnny Triumph (C+, 15:10)

Season Low Point: Week One loss to The British Warrior (F, 9:50)

The First Half: Matches of the Night

Note that only these currently are in the running for Match of the Season honors. The next seven matches of the Night will also be in the running for the end-of-season award.

Week One: Nuclear Templeton (1) def. Maxx Skabb (1): 19:40, B-

Week Two: Maxx Skabb (2) def. Sean (1): 26:00, A*

Week Three: Maxx Skabb (3) def. The Phoenix (1): 20:40, B

Week Four: Johnny Triumph (1) def. Diamond (1): 23:20, A*

Week Five: Tarik Nolan (1) def. Johnny Triumph (2): 15:30, A*

Week Six: Diamond (2) def. Johnny Triumph (3): 23:00, A*

Week Seven: Shawn Arrows (1) def. Diamond (3): 26:20, A*

The First Half: By The Numbers

Match Time: Min. 4:30, Average 12:37, Max 32:00

Average Match Rating: 4.50 (C+)

Average Winner's Offense: 54.31%

Average Winner's Change in Popularity: Increase of 2.415

Average Loser's Change in Popularity: Loss of 0.703

The First Half: Tori's Awards

These will resemble the planned end-of-season awards that The League will be handing out.

Entertainer of the First Half: Johnny Triumph, easily. He has over a full grade over the next competitor, Diamond (7.29 for Triumph, 5.71 for Diamond).

Upset of the First Half: I don't think anyone would begrudge me this one—Diamond's upset of Johnny Triumph in his home region, in a First Blood match during week six.

Match of the First Half: Shawn Arrows over Diamond in week seven has to be the most I’ve enjoyed watching a match all season.

Tori's Projected Final Standings

Someone asked last week; this week I'll deliver. What follows is my take on how the season will end, taking everything done during the last seven weeks into account.

ALPHA DIVISION

z-1. Nuclear Templeton: 11-3

BETA DIVISION

y-1. Robbie Maynard: 10-4

GAMMA DIVISION

2. Johnny Triumph: 6-8

3. Diamond: 5-9

4. Shawn Arrows: 4-10

Prediction Central

No one got a perfect score last week—in fact, three seemed to be the average, with only one person getting above that. Thus, congrats to Mr. SeanMcG who walked away from last week with four points and a share of second place.

By the skin of her teeth, Miss moon_lit_tears continues to hold the lead, though she does not gain any ground on second place this week.

PREDICTION STANDINGS AFTER WEEK SEVEN:

1. moon_lit_tears: 26 points

(tie) 2. Derek_b, SeanMcG: 25 points

4. Tori Montgomery: 23 points

5. Prophet: 22 points

6. I effin rule: 20 points

7. masterded: 14 points

8. Wrestling Century: 7 points

9. MichiganHero: 6 points

10. Zeel1: 4 points

We’re back in the U.S. this week, as we invade the Mall in Washington, DC. This is a rather unique venue to air from, as attendance is expected to exceed over 55,000 spectators. As the majority of the wrestlers have some sort of recognition in the Mid-Atlantic area, it seemed only fitting to head to the nation’s capital for our next event. With that said...

PREDICTIONS FOR WEEK SEVEN: Washington, DC (Mid-Atlantic US)

(American style crowd, Sports Entertainment style match)

BETA DIVISION: Robbie Maynard (5-2, 15%) vs. SGRaaize (2-5. 15%)

This should be a cakewalk for Maynard, who takes his frustrations out on Raaize after last week’s shenanigans.

Tori’s Prediction: Robbie Maynard, via submission (Merseyside Maul), 8:40, D

BETA DIVISION: Tarik Nolan (5-2, 18%) vs. Breaker (4-3, 15%)

This could be a lot closer than people think. I’m calling an upset here.

Tori’s Prediction: Breaker, via pinall (Dream Breaker), 17:20, B

Diamond (2-5, 15%) vs. The Phoenix (2-5, 24%)

Phoenix will be wrestling less than 80 miles from his home. Then again, Diamond’s beaten these odds before. Toss-up, but in this case I have to take the technical wrestler in a straight-up match.

Tori’s Prediction: The Phoenix, via submission (Eternal Requiem), 16:00, C

Johnny Triumph (2-5, 21%) vs. Nuclear Templeton (6-1, 18%)

People may not use the term “upset” for this one, but it qualifies under League guidelines. Templeton wins going away.

Tori’s Prediction: Nuclear Templeton, via pinfall (Armageddon Lariat), 9:00, C+

Shawn Arrows (3-4, 24%) vs. Maxx Skabb (3-4, 18%)

Now that Arrows has gotten into his groove, I think he pulls out a hard-fought win here against the much larger opponent.

Tori’s Prediction: Shawn Arrows, via pinfall (Arrow-Shot DDT), 14:50, B-

Sean (4-3, 24%) vs. The British Warrior (4-3, 24%)

I expect the fans to be fired up over this one. I’m also expecting this to be a toss-up as well.

Tori’s Prediction: Sean, via submission (Modified Figure Four), 24:20, A*

We return to Canada for the final time this season next week, when this column will resume its’ normal duties. Until then, this is Tori Montgomery...so long from ringside!

***QUICK PICK SHEET: WEEK EIGHT***

BETA DIVISION: Robbie Maynard (5-2, 15%) vs. SGRaaize (2-5. 15%)

BETA DIVISION: Tarik Nolan (5-2, 18%) vs. Breaker (4-3, 15%)

Diamond (2-5, 15%) vs. The Phoenix (2-5, 24%)

Johnny Triumph (2-5, 21%) vs. Nuclear Templeton (6-1, 18%)

Shawn Arrows (3-4, 24%) vs. Maxx Skabb (3-4, 18%)

Sean (4-3, 24%) vs. The British Warrior (4-3, 24%)

This will be the week Triumph starts his accent to the top of the GAMMA division which he will take in the final week where he will need a Sean lost and a win for himself.

I keep meaning to really work on a solo-player RTL game myself, if only for something else to do besides stare at spreadsheets during the week leading up to the show. Then again, I might wait until the off-season to start a game. Not sure yet.

I think that's is surprising that I'm just 1 off the leaders in the prediction contest, despite missing a week :D

With only six matches a week, as long as you can make up a point or two a week you can get right back in it (especially with 7 weeks to go). Hoping to get a full complement of 16 people in for next season, eight matches a week will make for a little more of a challenge, and I may include bonus points for guessing the grades correctly next season. Still debating if I want to add that to my list of new features for season 2.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I have a hard enough time choosing winners, don't make it harder on me. I can't win matches so I atleast need to stay ahead in predictions. :(

Man, Maxx seems to be the absolute definition of feast or famine. 3 matches of the night, 3 losses in under 6 minutes ... I'm the love child of Bret Hart and the Brooklyn Brawler!

BETA DIVISION: Robbie Maynard (5-2, 15%) vs. SGRaaize (2-5. 15%)

BETA DIVISION: Tarik Nolan (5-2, 18%) vs. Breaker (4-3, 15%)

Diamond (2-5, 15%) vs. The Phoenix (2-5, 24%)

Johnny Triumph (2-5, 21%) vs. Nuclear Templeton (6-1, 18%)

Shawn Arrows (3-4, 24%) vs. Maxx Skabb (3-4, 18%)

Sean (4-3, 24%) vs. The British Warrior (4-3, 24%)

Probably should've picked Arrows. Considering my streak, I'm gonna trip during my entrance, knock myself out on the steps, and lose in 12 seconds. (Gotta count for time to move my big tookus away from the ropes. :p)

Looks at the picks going on right now and knows desperation is needed.

Free Steroids for anyone who picks Triumph. Clean Needles for all so no fear of Hepatitis C.

I just realized I have established that in my mind that Triumph has Hepatitis C from sharing needles. Hep C can live outside the body for at least 4 hours. Triumph was in first blood match with Diamond. I think someone is going to need to be tested. :D

I was clean before that match buddy. If I have Hep C now it's all your fault. :D
