TEW13 Multiplayer Central

With the announcement of TEW being able to have up to 8 players in a game at once and for players to join/leave at any time, this seems like the perfect time to create a thread dedicated to getting some multiplayer games going. No longer will games end when someone is unable to play, that person can easily be dropped and the game can carry on! Hooray! With that in mind I know there are a lot of different ways to play the game and that a lot of people are going to want to do things differently. There are already a couple of threads in the TEW10 Dynasty Forum (located here and here) with lots of people interested. And I have to assume that there are going to be lots more people who want to play multiplayer games who might not want to write a dynasty about them so with that in mind, here is a very rough list of some ideas for games that are kicking about. If you are interested in a particular type of game then let it be known here and I’ll do my best to keep this thread up to date with information for as long as I can.

Remember, everyone should agree ahead of time to a specific ruleset in terms of Preferences (using Fog of War, Dirt Sheet Hidden, Injury Frequency, Regional Availability of Workers, etc) so that everyone is on the same page. I suggest appointing one person to be the Admin of each game, someone who can ultimately decide on such things if no obvious concensus can be reached.

Please note that each type of game can obviously have more than one game in it. So if a game type is popular don’t hesitate to start up another game so that multiple games can be run at once. And obviously everything is provisional at this stage as it’s too early to know how the Cornellverse is going to look when the game is released and that will likely have a huge effect on who will want to play as each promotion. :)

DYNASTY GAMES

+ If you want to play any of these games then you will be expected to write a dynasty about your exploits in the wrestling world. Make sure you’re ready for it when you sign up.

Cornellverse Games

+ Global Top Level: Using top level promotions who should all have TV/PPV or multiple touring events per week, in-game progress will be slow but will feature everyone at the top end of the gameworld. Should see lots of popular characters being used, lots of competition for workers and everyone posting in a fairly well structured way given their shows will fall into a pattern with minimum roster raids from non-player companies.

+ 8 Rings of Wrestling [8RoW]

- Game Admin: FINisher

- Interested Players: Bull (PGHW?), Derek B (BHOTWG?), D-Lyrium (WLW?), FINisher (GCG/WEXXV?), foolinc (USPW?), NoNeck (SWF?), Self (CGC?), Wallbanger (NOTBPW?). (FINisher’s provisional line-up, subject to change as particulars are worked out)

See thread - http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=521809

Other interested players: Blake Trask, Boltinho, Charasmatic Enigma, eayragt, Eidenhoek, Jingo, juggaloninjalee, Phantom Stranger, Portlius, Psycho Sam,

+ USA Only: Featuring almost every promotion from one game area this type of game should provide a complete insight into one game area. Different schedules for big and small companies allow for varying levels of commitment and for characters to be easily tracked through different companies, particularly awesome for dynasty writers and readers who want to follow their favourites around the region.

+ Name of Game

- Game Admin: ???

- Interested Players:

+ Regional Battle: Everyone takes on a small promotion from somewhere in the world. This will lead to rapid progress as promotions have fewer shows, leading to more rapid progress through the game. An ever changing gameworld and the threat of the AI controlled big companies will keep things constantly fresh. Can be located in one area like North America so that workers can easily be followed or scattered throughout the world so that most players will act as star makers for larger companies, while also hoping to grow themselves into a large company.

+ Regional Rumble

- Game Admin: Boltinho

- Interested Players: 20Legend (MAW), Boltinoho (ACPW), Charasmatic Enigma (CZCW), Imarevenant (PSW), Jingo (BSC), MichiganHero (4C), SMWilliams (NYCW), Zergon (FCW),

See thread - http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=521865

+ All Roads Lead To Glory: A giant Road To Glory game, with all players creating a rookie character for themselves and following the rules of the Road To Glory challenge on their way to success. Will mean any players creating many small promotions to begin with, which can bring about the challenge of trying to balance the books while running shows in order to grow your user character and ultimately be a success in the wrestling world. Players would need to agree on rules for locations of the new promotions but other than that, the rules are fairly well laid out byu the challenge. Administrator should probably be in charge of all end of year rolls.

+ Name of Game

- Game Admin: ???

- Interested Players:

+ World/National Draft: A game where the players draft workers to their promotions. There are so many variations of this that it would be up to the players to decide. The old promotions could be cleared out and new promotions created. Old promotions could be levelled to be the same with the rosters created by the draft. Play could be anywhere in the world or focussed to one particular region. However it’s done, workers are drafted to a roster and official canon goes somewhat out of the window as everyone vies to get the roster they want.

Other Games

Not knowing what mods are going to be available, and not intending to try to keep track of every possible game, I’m leaving this as a placeholder for people who want to start putting together dynasty based games for other mods. Good luck!

NON-DYNASTY GAMES

+ These games have no requirements to write a dynasty (though you could if you wanted to) so will likely be able to play faster than a dynasty based game. Again, make sure you have the time to regular check in and play as all of these games are likely to be a big commitment in terms of effort.

Helpful Multiplayer Advice and Suggestions

From my own past experience, here are some guidelines that will probably be helpful for anyone playing multiplayer games. I’ve tried to separate out the ideas for the sake of clarity.

Activity: This is the most important aspect of any multiplayer game. Even in games with 3 or 4 people there have been lengthy period of miscommunication about player turns and delays in passing the files on, which makes for a slow game. With as many as 8 people playing a game, it’s going to be almost a requirement that you check for your turn on a daily basis, if not repeatedly per day. There’s nothing more frustrating than waiting for someone to take a turn, so being active is important, moreso in the biggest games that are likely to be played. Your turn might only take one minute to do, but if you aren't there to do it then it can take days. So activity in a big game is important.

File Sharing: The files in a multiplayer game are going to have to be passed around constantly so everyone will need access to the files. For this I suggest using Dropbox (link to download), which is a helpful little program that sits on your computer and automatically allows you to update the game files as long as your computer is connected to the internet. By having one folder for the files (possibly even for the game itself if that works), a folder for some useful information and a file that gets it’s name changed to show whose turn it is, there should be no miscommunication errors or unnecessary delays in taking turns. Everyone should be able to access these files, making it possible to leave notes for other players on what to do for your turn, to ask questions of people and generally communicate about things. Here is an example of what I would suggest.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c33/DerekB83/8RoW.png

Clean, simple and gets across any useful and important information quickly. The folder for all the player talk can have all the instructions you need to help keep things moving along quickly, which is one of the most helpful things you can do in a multiplayer game.

Communication: Perhaps the key to everything. Whether it be about booking plans, potential roster steals by or from other companies or just gossip about your game, you’re going to need to be in communication with the other players. If possible, everyone should be able to talk about their game somewhere, whether that means setting up a facebook group, creating a thread on GDS somewhere or using MSN or IRC… the more people talk, the better the game is for everyone as it prevents miscommunications and promotes quick gameplay.

Plan Ahead!: Whether this be booking plans for your future shows or your real life is going to get in the way somehow… if you plan ahead you should be able to leave instructions for other people on what to do when it’s your turn. If you leave detailed booking plans then your shows can be run even while you are away. This links back to communication… the more others know about what you are going to do or want to do, the more that can be done by players for you if you don’t have as much time. Good planning leads to good results, which can also help you to write a dynasty if you are going to do that. If you know what is going to happen on your next show then you can even get a head start on writing it. You might be able to go on holiday for a week and people might not even notice you are gone if you plan ahead. And if you do all the little things in one go then it leaves everyone just needing to do the big things, like booking shows.

An extra little tip here , one I used in TEW10 games a lot. Keep a copy of the files for yourself and sim ahead. You’ll get an idea of how long it’ll be before your next decision and you’ll know when your next show is. Try to work out everything you will want to do do, scout workers, plan your show, be ready for your turn. It’s a bit more effort but it leads to great organisation and the ability for people to skip past turns in order to keep everything moving quickly. And trust me, keeping the files moving is the hardest part of all, especially with players playing from all over the world. Timezones get in the way of progress!

Trust: Again, linking back to everything above. You should be able to trust all of your fellow players. If you feel that you have to password protect your game then it’s going to slow everything down if your turn shows up and no-one can get past it. Likewise, there shouldn’t need to be lots of rules to govern player behaviours in a game. If you can’t trust people to behave in a way that is fun for everyone, or if you don’t think you can have fun with particular other players involved, then the multiplayer game is probably going to be doomed to failure before it begins. Though with that said, talking about anything that could be an issue before it comes up will make sure things work out well, so again communication is the key.

The Latest Patch: If you are playing a multiplayer game then everyone needs to be using the same version of the game at all times to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Whenever a new patch comes out people should make sure everyone else knows about it and upgrade immediately. It’ll ensure that everyone is on the same page and it’ll make sure that no unexpected problems pop up. Again, communication is the key here and everyone will have to pay attention to make sure that everyone keeps up with this.

…..

Obviously the bigger the game, the more effort it will take to keep things running smoothly. I don’t want to go on about it too much but I can’t understate how important it is to keep the lines of communication open. The more the players stay in touch, the better the game will be for everyone involved. And in the case of dynasty games, the better the writing can be too as you can help to work out the kinks in any bookings you make by going over things with someone else.

…..

So yeah, I’ll try to keep this up to date for a while at least. I’m mostly doing this to help organise some big multiplayer games… if you’re just looking for a straight up SWF vs TCW battle then you can probably do that without any help from this thread, though I’m sure there are some useful tips in here for you too. If you post in here and want to run a game, make it clear what you’re looking for and I can add to the lists. Even if you want to start your own thread for a game, I can post the link here and keep things roughly organised so that people know what to look for in future too. I get the feeling there are going to be some epic dynasties in TEW13 and if I can help some of them get off the ground I’ll be rather happy. :D

I understand the enthusiasm you guys have already now, but planning so far ahead can be troublesome. For one, it's not unusual for people's enthusiasm to fade somewhat while waiting several months... and people who now have interest/time for the games may not have it come January. Also, it can be dangerous (or even futile) to plan this or that without knowing the full set of features just yet.

Though I'm sure such a thread can be very useful once the game is actually released, if maintained. The idea is good, and the effort commendable.

I will personally likely start up a mid-nineties RW game in some form or the other.

Jesus O.o

Derek, you have way too much time on your hands.

Yeah, I've had a quiet few days. That'll change though. :p

But at least I'm not going to be trying to play them all... and it didn't really take long to organise this as I'd been thinking of writing it up anyways. Seeing you try to worko out what kinds of games people wanted seemed to be causing more work than necessary, figured this would help a bit. :)

All true. But at the same time, the people who are interested now are probably going to be even more interested in the times just after they've got a hold of the game, so I'm optimistic that barring a change in real life circumstances that most people signing up just now are likely to stay. Though with so many likely changes to the data, I also imagine that people are going to change preferences between now and game release too.

But the more organisation done now, the smoother things will be. And if this thread helps everyone to play multiplayer games (which can be amazing!) then I'll be happy. :)

I'm adding your game to the list too. :)

Enthusiasm.

Thats why Im thinking playing a few warmups on TEW 2010 might be a good idea. Get mechanics sorted and show anyone who hasnt done it before that MP is a great way to play TEW.

Getting everyone comfortable with dropbox, labelling and passing files on can only be good.

As well as making sure that the people signed up are compatible to play together

That's some good thinking right there. :) Normally I'd be right there in terms of joining in, but I've kinda stopped playing TEW10 already. I'm mostly doing modding, organisation and stealthy dynasty reading just now for more ideas to pay tribute towards so I won't be on this one. But it would be great to see a dummy run going, dynasty or not. :)

You know, I still have the files for that BCG-EX2010 game we had going... ;)

I don't have my notes for that game any more, I lost them on one of the many times my old computer died before I got this laptop. :( That was fun for a while, I do love me some Japanese Cornellverse, it's perfect for my style of play and writing. I don't get so bogged down in characters that writing takes forever, allowing me to stick to my strengths which is working out the overarching plots and general storylines.

Going a little off topic... BHOTWG and NOTBPW could be good friends, we both have ridiculously long initials and a Stone fetish, it could be the start of something beautiful. ;)

Heh, most definitely. If Cliff Wilson isn't retired yet (though I think the odds on of him being retired are at least 70%) I'd love to see him be in one Best of the Super Juniors. And of course sending Dan Jr. over (and Jeremy, though I would put his odds of being retired in similar territory as Cliff) to team with Duane would be awesomesauce.

ERROR~! BHOTWG does not recognise "Duane Stone". Do you mean, "Black Cobra"? :p

But yeah, I'm sorta expecting Jezza to have hung up his boots by now, or to be in the kind of veteran's decline that would make him nowhere near as talented as he was before. Cliff Wilson I constantly hope to see making a return to the UK to end his career, either running somewhere like HIW or taking a starring role in 21CW where he helps to teach a new generation of talents.

I keep thinking about who I'd love to see in BHOTWG but I've got no idea who I'd send the other way. Assuming BHOTWG still has Kikkawa, I guess he could make some awesome appearances in NOTBPW, kicking the bejeezus out of some people before falling just short in a big title match. Reminds me a little of the TCW-BHOTWG trade of Cornell-Kudo that was described a while back... huge matches for those guys, would be great to see some dream matches like that, but the game can't be all about dream matches. :)

I think a lot of people are put off by the complicated way multiplayer games have to be set up in TEW. It would be awesome to have a more sophisticated system for it but that would eat up a lot of Adam's time and resources... I ain't too keen on the swapping files between every turn as that makes progress way too slow for my taste :(

<p>I'd play a multiplayer game that doesnt restrict you to anything really. The only rule would be you can't hoard talent just for the sake of doing so but you can have slightly bloated rosters, and you can hoard talent if you are enforcing a brand split for 2 tv shows.</p><p> </p><p>

Wish I had time to play a multiplayer game but right now I know I don't have any free time. Maybe by mid January I will have the time though.</p>

My hope (having only written one short-lived, if not well-received diary) is more people will read these multi-player games and I'll have the freedom to do some fun story stuff with my avatar choice (Larry Vessey?) and that my next project will have a built-in reader base.</p><p> </p><p> Also, games with other people are fun in my experience. • 1 month later...

I am up for a Multiplayer. I have been playing the game since EWR in 1999, but i have never played a Multiplayer game.

I am online A LOT, to say the least. I usually have my computer on around 12 hours per day and i use MSN, IRC and Skype (although my time zone is +2 GMT which is probably not too comfortable for people based in the US), so i can easily communicate with my fellow players. I am not sure i will have time to do a dynasty, however i will be a very good Admin due to the activity and time i have.

To be honest though, i think we should keep it down to just a few very active groups. Maybe have 2-3 groups of 8 players with vice-presidents. Which means that if one player "runs out of steam" his vice steps in to run the promotion. We could even have a "team" which covers a particular promotion. Not sure how that will work, but i am sure that is possible.

As mentioned in this thread, activity is the #1 factor here. Without it you will end up with a very slow game. It is better to have 2-3 active mutiplayer games which are well supported, with a good dynasty telling people what is going on, that having 5-6 poorly supported.
