To start the interview in a high note, Mr. Ole, What is your relationship with the current World Champion Ric Flair?

Ric and I have a unique relationship. Thing is what you see on screen is what you see off screen - we're both just playing ourselves - the only difference is that the things we're arguing or agreeing about on screen are different from the ones behind the scenes. At the moment Ric and I are good, you might want to come back and ask me about that again in a couple of weeks but right now, we're on the same page.

2. Ted can go with the best of them but he's not fit to mentioned in the same breath as Ric Flair or Nick Bockwinkel right now. And that's not the guy's fault - it's where he works. Right now people are paying money to see the rich guy get his comeuppance; to see the bully get what's coming to him. Ring any bells? It's the same reason that people are still paying money to come and watch Alliance matches. They want to see Vince McMahon beaten and that's what we're gonna do. Good luck to Ted but if he wants to be recognised as a real legend, he needs to do it here.

3. You don't have to be in the Alliance to be respectful. Verne Gagne respected the business and look what they've done to him! This is it though - our last stand and the Alliance is pulling together - we're adding members all the time, we've lifted restrictions on running shows outside our own areas and offering free trade amongst our members. We never set out with the intention of being a global company in JCP... but the Alliance is - if we're the centre of that then so be it. Maybe that's what is needed a centralised global office with lots of feeder members. Time will tell I guess but we think we have the business plan, with the right acquisitions to take the game to the enemy.

6. He's a guy who deserved a few runs as a thank you. He knows how to generate heat and this title change was his idea. I think it's working well. Is it a long term thing? No, in 1988 you can't be booking everything in this old fashioned way but as a novelty I think it works.

8. Your choices for the 'new' Horsemen proved somewhat controversial - fans seem to have taken to Barry Windham but Terry Taylor and Bob Orton Jr. have both drawn criticism... what would you say to those critics?

The Horsemen was a lucky accident. Four major title holders sent out to do a promo together and for some reason it caught fire. People saw us as the four elite workers in the business and that's what the Horseman brand is all about now - Elitism. Showing off who are the best workers in the world. Tell me who's been ripping up the territory in the last three months? It's Bob Orton. Without wanting to be arrogant, the man is like Ole Anderson - a guy who just gets the job done in the ring. Terry Taylor has the swagger of Tully Blanchard but just as importantly the look of Ric Flair - he could be a real star in this business and the Horsemen will take him there. The Horsemen are not the only thing we've got in the NWA right now... but they're a key component of what we've got planned. People have to get out of the mindset of the Four Horsemen being Me, Ric, Arn and Tully. Those days are gone and I'm afraid to say they aren't coming back. The Horsemen are different now but they've the same goal - to hold every piece of gold in the industry. Funny thing is the only one that's been accepted without issue is Barry... and he's the one who nearly didn't make the cut. I had looked to bring in Mike Rotunda to team up with Barry again but he signed on at Disneyland instead, bet he regrets that now, but anyway my other choice, Stan Lane came to me and asked about picking up Steve Keirn for a run with the Fabulous Ones and I pulled the switch. Seems to have worked out well for both of them.

9. To end the interview, can you tell us about new hirings for the JCP?

Hirings? Watch out for the Great American Bash, we've picked up one or two people who might make wonderful additions to our roster and I guarantee you this, the whole landscape of the company will change after this show.

((Minor correction: the Bash was the 30th, not the 29th.))

It was no DiBiase vs. Hart (<img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />), but good to see Bockwinkel go out with a solid main event performance.

I see Tully brought his belt with him. Is that a title unification match with Flair I smell? Tell me that wouldn't be a sweet Starrcade main event!

Looks like Liger's got his first legit feud--that should be interesting. The modern day flier vs. one of the innovators.

I expected Precious to be a swerve, but I think I like what you did better. The beauty & the beast reference was a nice touch.

Both of the title changes surprised me, but in hindsight I think they were good moves. I'll be interested to see if the Von Erichs/Freebirds feud continues.

Also: the WWF may not acknowledge the existence of rival promotions, but don't think they aren't reading Ole's comments in the dirt sheets and cooking up some subtle (or not so subtle) jabs in response. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

At this point in time, the AWA is still one of the big world titles in the United States (no matter what John Cena has had to say recently), so I currently I can only see you doing a title merger at Starrcade (AWA versus NWA, the alliance's last laugh over Verne Gagne?) or a dual brand system to accommodate two world championships and maybe give you more opportunities to get some youngsters over.

What's interesting about a JCP diary is that the WWF currently has many if not most of all the obvious names & contenders, so more than a few of your signings are coming out of left-field for most readers, but you're still doing rather well in making them feel right, for lack of a better term.

LOVED IT. The Bash was great from top to bottom, can't find any possible way to say anything negative about it. AND YOU BOUGHT THE AWA!!! Definitely excited to see where you fit all your new stars in, if they're all just going to be jobbers except for the big three that you picked up, or if some of them will have a good spot.

Looks like in 3ish months when I get to my GAB, I'll have quite the shoes to fill!

When I discussed it with TFC (giving him his place and allowing him to veto it if he felt it disturbed the game world too much) he did tell me as fair warning that he'd be going after those two if the AWA went out of business... I'd never have been able to compete with the lure of the WWF... so it's my fault that you're not getting to see a programme between Demolition & Arn/Tully... sorry!!!

Thanks for that! I have tried to make signings seem as legit as possible and have decided against bringing people in before for that very same reason... Mr. T. has been my one true 'luxury' in that sense. He's not someone I could've seen working for a wrestling promotion for any length of time and doesn't seem to fit quite right at the moment. It's causing me some headaches because I have a real long term idea of what to do with him and his character but if I can't make it a better fit soon then I'll need to cut him loose.
Not gonna lie Ritchardo, but you've really regained momentum with this AWA buy-out and with Tully & Arn back in JCP. I'm surprised that TFC didn't go for them (was there an OOC reason he didn't do it?), but it's a cool moment that I wish had happened IRL when the AWA went out of business.

Other questions:

1. Mind giving us a list of the AWA acquires you made?

1B. Also, the final AWA roster if you remember it or print-screened it?

1C. Final champions?

1D. Showing of the final AWA event/did you do a final "AWA" event of your own to give them a proper conclusion?*

* I tend to do that sometimes when I buy a company out and if I'm going for a loot option. Take all the wrestlers, give them one final pay off and shift the titles to whoever I want and then let go of the ones I don't want/didn't produce as hoped. Obvious example is AMW in every 1997 game I play.

As a result, after nearly 30 years in business, Verne sold all of the company’s assets to the NWA, which led to several AWA stars appearing on the NWA’s Great American Bash PPV this month (more on that a bit later.)

No wrestling promotion has anywhere near the financial muscle of the WWF, so obviously they could have stepped in and outbid the NWA if they’d chosen to do so. From what we’ve been told, head booker James Hill wanted to do exactly that, and had a tentative AWA vs. WWF storyline in the works before Vince McMahon stepped in and shot him down. Vince does not like to publicly acknowledge the existence of any rival wrestling promotions, and apparently that philosophy also applied to the idea of an invading AWA force actually owned by the WWF. Vince was content with the AWA ceasing operations, and more importantly their TV show going off of the air so the WWF is once again the only wrestling company featured on TNN.

The NWA had no such reservations, and thus jumped in and bought Verne out. The move will provide a nice boost to the NWA’s star power with the likes of Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson and Jimmy Snuka, and also opens up some interesting storyline possibilities.

Head Booker Ole Anderson was given the unenviable task of dismissing a number of backroom staff, the women's division and the majority of the lower card workers on a black day for wrestling.

We understand that the following contracts were honoured as part of the transfer to JCP:

Arn Anderson

Brian Blair

Buddy Rose

Buzz Sawyer

Cocoa Samoa

Dick Murdoch

Doug Somers

Greg Gagne

Jerry Lawler

Jimmy Garvin

Jimmy Snuka

Larry Zbyszko

Tully Blanchard

Billy Robinson

Verne Gagne

Lawler's move, however, was only a temporary one he had asked to be released from his commitments to allow him to focus on the CWA, which as a fellow member of the NWA, JCP were happy to comply with following a short run to put over Lawler's cousin, Wayne 'Honky Tonk Man' Ferris.

In addition to the names brought in, JCP decided to pick up free agents Pat Tanaka and Jerry Blackwell.

It remains how they, and their ex-AWA colleagues will be utilised.

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/NWA.jpghttp://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/ASW2.jpg

After slowly declining in size over the past five years, the NWA today showed the first true signs of some kind of recovery. Against a backdrop of members folding, pulling out and generally dwindling in size, NWA President Jim Crockett Jr, who had been posted missing from his own promotion lately, revealed that his ‘holidays’ could be better classed as a working trip after reaching an agreement with Brian Dixon’s All Star Wrestling in the United Kingdom to join the Alliance. The NWA were clearly taking note of the WWF’s recent Anarchy in the UK tour and both ASWUK and the NWA will be keen to try and limit the Federation’s influence in the UK moving forward.

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/JCP-1.jpghttp://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/NJPW.jpg

A busy month for news sees what would normally be headline news relegated in importance but the relationship between New Japan and Jim Crockett Promotions has reached the point of being 'untenable'. Reports suggest that the recent acquisition of Stan Hansen & Steve Williams through a new working relationship with Inoki's group infuriated Giant Baba and AJPW. Hansen had of course recently defected to NJPW and Baba took the matter very seriously, giving NWA President an ultimatum. What Crockett's decision would've been remains a mystery because as ever in the wrestling business, other events overtook them.

We understand that the skirmish between Greg Gagne and Stan Hansen at the Great American Bash was NOT scripted and was a culmination of a lot of bad blood and tension between the Gagnes and Hansen since their arrival in the JCP locker room. New Japan officials are apparently furious at having one of their stars humiliated in such a public fashion and demanded that Hansen & Williams return to the company immediately. Shinya Hashimoto has also left the company as a result of the incident.

<blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote"
Cheers for all the info, I'm surprised you didn't bring in the other AWA titles and purloin them into title shots/unification with your existing championships for a nice little bit of shine for the existing champs. But then I always try to work some extra money out of a promotion assimilation by having as many "unification marquee" matches for an event as possible.

Also, how dare you not bring in Madusa Miceli, that All-American sweet-heart. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> And Landell is a good enough worker that I'm surprised you didn't keep him on for the sake of jobbing if nothing else.

I'm still running a game with the AWA so this will be interesting to follow. Buddy Rose and Doug Somers are a solid tag team and Rose especially is entertaining.

Personally I dismissed Greg Gagne (as a storyline as I took over from his father Verne as the owner) and I never really got any good matches out of Cocoa Samoa.

Perhaps I'll make a diary from the ongoing game one day...got everything written up in Word but don't think I have the time or motivation to do all the formatting.

You should have taken Dick Slater as well...he's a fun guy to have backstage. Honky's nothing compared to Slater... <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

there is nothing that says you can't book an AWA MEMORIES show in a month or two. Whether its a monthly supercard, tv show, or one-off house show, it would be a nice tribute. Use your newly acquired AWA stars in meaningful matches and work in a few of your regulars to fill out the show (and help get better ratings). Very similiar concept the "One Night Only" hardcore shows that pay tribute to ECW

even though the belts may be buried, you could always have Jimmy Garvin saying he's the best jr heavyweight in the world and challenge to Liger. Gagne/Samoa - I doubt that team will see the light of day in JCP, short of maybe using them on the AWA memories show -- a match that maybe sets up a feud for one or both of them (like Cocoa turning heel. that would also set him up for a feud with Snuka).

We all know Buddy Rose can be built into a national star with a little work (having done so in AWA and PNW diaries). Hopefully he will get a chance to shine on the big stage of the NWA now.

Wow I love the work you and TFC are doing you guys have peaked my interest. I am trying to talk one of my buddies into purchasing this game so I can do a multiplayer game.

I love the passive AWA thing you are doing and your roster needed the shot in the arm from their roster. Maybe in a years game time you can actually start to look a threat.....Are we looking to change to World Championship Wrestling in the 90's or are you going to stay Jim Crockett?

Last night I read through most of this and I just finished up. Even though I'm not old enough to have seen this time period in wrestling (and my family has always been more WWF-oriented so I've only seen the older WWF tapes), you really complement TFC's diary well. It's clear that you guys have two different organisms in the same world because the visual style is the same, but the personalities of the shows are completely different.

I like it a lot thus far, except I may boycott this diary from here on out because Jimmy Del Ray got released. <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/mad.png.69834f23b9a8bf290d98375f56f1c794.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Where the tactic fell down, however, was Snuka’s unorthodox fighting style that suckered Blackwell into a false sense of superiority. Running straight towards the giant, Blackwell threw up a meaty fist looking for a neat hook but Snuka, without dropping a second in speed sidestepped and caught the big man unawares from side on. With a flurry of blows Blackwell was rocked and a standing dropkick later found himself lying up looking at the lights – the speed with which Snuka ascended the corner before hitting with a picture pefect Flying Splash was something to behold.
