<p>I think Vader's due a big bonus after taking out that old fart Bockwinkel! <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

The way the tournament played out threw me for a loop (but in a good way!)</p>

May 6th, 1988

From the Springfield Civic Center, Springfield, Massachusetts

Attendance: 5,000 (Sell Out)

Announce Team: Bob Caudle and Tony Schiavone

Before the show begins we're shown some footage of an incident that happened earlier in the day. Camera footage has caught Magnum T.A. arriving in the building when he is confronted by an irrate looking Bob Orton Jr. There is no sound to the video but Orton is clearly unhappy... with nowhere else to go Magnum looks nervous... and rightly so because Orton suddenly flies at him, knocking him to the ground before following up with some vicious kicks to the stomach. Some nearby officials arrive and Orton is escorted away - never the less the message has been sent...

Grade: C+

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/BobOrtonJr.jpg

As Bob Caudle and Tony Schiavone continue to condemn Bob Orton Jr for his actions, the man himself makes his way down to the ring.

Orton: “You shut your mouth boys unless you want the same thing to happen to you! What you people just saw was real payback. Last Saturday, Magnum T.A. stuck his nose where it didn’t belong – he cost me the chance to become a champion around here and that’s not acceptable. So I sent a message to your fat sack of crap best buddy and the luckiest guy walking the face of this earth. That’s right Stan Lane – that was a message to you? Are you man enough to meet me in the ring tonight? How about you prove that you were good enough to put me down? Let’s see if you can pull it off when the sides are even boy.”

The remaining announce team advise us that Dusty Rhodes has accompanied Magnum T.A. to the local emergency centre and will not be in attendance tonight but that he has promised Bob Orton Jr. that he will see him next week...

Tonight’s special guest commentator Nick Bockwinkel comes down the aisle and puts on his headset.

Bockwinkel: “Thank you very much for having me here, let’s get ready for a top night of wrestling.”

LazerTron vs. Mr. Fantastic Terry Taylor

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/LazerTron.jpg vs. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/TerryTaylor.jpg

A match requested by Terry Taylor at the Crockett Cup, this is a high octane clash between two up and coming workers. Although on a strong run over the past few weeks, Terry Taylor didn’t get his own way in this match with LazerTron matching Taylor move for move. Frustration clearly began to set in for Mr. Fantastic who is not used to things going someone else’s way. Taylor attempted to catch LazerTron in a reverse neckbreaker but failed to hold his man properly, LazerTron was able to slip out of the hold and caught Taylor with a Butterfly Suplex to grab the three count.

Winner: LazerTron with a Butterfly Suplex in 13:30 to retain the NWA World Television Title

Barry Windham comes face to face with Ron Garvin in the interview area backstage.

Windham: “Guess you’re feeling pretty good about yourself Ronnie? Thing is – I felt sorry for you man. I thought about all that time we spent together on the road and defending those US Tag Titles and I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t give you the punch in the mouth that you deserved so I suggest you take your win against Barry Windham, cherish it and tell your grandkids about it... when you see them tonight after the show...”

Garvin: “That’s cute Barry. The only thing I’ll be telling my grandkids, many years from now, is how this no-name forgotten footnote in the wrestling history books was too much of a chicken to stand up and face me like a man. You aren’t fit to carry my jockstrap son!”

Windham: “That was your last chance that you’ve just blown Ron. Well done. Next time I see you I won’t let-up on the beating. You get me Garvin? It’s all over – just like your career.”

After a period of being unusually quiet, by his standards anyway, Kevin Sullivan seems to be focusing on his in-ring performances of late and this was another routine victory for the craziest man in the company. King had virtually no offence to speak of as it was something of a blessed relief when King was given the opportunity to quit from the Tree of Woe.

Precious is standing by with Mr. T, Ron Simmons and the mysterious stranger who interfered after the All Americans’ loss to The Fabulous Ones at the Crockett Cup. We’re shown a brief video of the attack on Lex Luger before our guests are asked for their comments. It would appear that Mr. T is going to do all the talking.

Mr. T.: “Hey woman! You back right up and listen to me. Lex Luger, JJ Dillon, you just got served notice suckas! There’s a new force here in the NWA and you’re looking right at ‘em. Meet The Enemy. We’re Big. We’re Black. We’re Badass. Ron Simmons. Larry Cameron. Mr. T. You’re looking at the new dominant force around here. And I pity the fool that stands in our way. For those fans at home who didn’t pick up the Crockett Cup PPV, this was their first chance to witness Jushin Liger with their own two eyes. And it’s something they’re unlikely to forget because just like Johnny Ace before him, Basher was completely out of his depth against the Japanese high flier! Running around the ring at an electric pace, Liger was almost untouchable for Basher – a baseball slide under the legs of Basher left the tag team specialist unprepared for what was to come next – turning quickly around Liger was ready... a kick to the gut doubled Basher over, bent double Liger pulled him in towards him and.... LIGER BOMB! It’s all over!

David Crockett catches a word with the Fabulous Freebirds before Terry Gordy’s match-up with Manny Fernandez.

Gordy: "I’m not interested in talking about Fernandez. That’ll take care of itself. What I want to talk about is poor Kerry and Kevin ha ha ha. How are you feeling boys? Did the big, bad Freebirds take away your chance of winning the belts?!"

Hayes: "Yeah, you see if we couldn’t win those belts then we don’t want you winning them either – because if there’s one thing I enjoy more than winning, it’s watching the Von Erichs LOSING! The sooner you boys pack up your things and head back to that two town Texas hole you come from the better! You’re not getting any more title shots around here again, we made sure of that! Ha ha ha!"

Crockett: “Actually... I’ve been informed by the NWA board that in light of the controversial end to their match at the Crockett Cup that the Von Erichs have been made #1 Contenders to the NWA World Tag Team Titles and that match takes place next week...”

The Fabulous Freebirds are speechless and without another word, they storm off!

Clearly still worked up from the news he’d just been given, Terry Gordy took his frustrations out on the Raging Bull. If there’s one thing that Manny Fernandez enjoys though, it’s a fight! We ended up with a pier-six brawl in the middle of the ring as both men looked to put their opponent down. Gordy though had the extra motivation in the end and, perhaps inspired by Jushin Liger earlier in the night, he put the full stop to the encounter with a hellacious powerbomb.

Flair: "Woooooooooooooooo!

“One week ago, you saw something that doesn’t happen very often. The Nature Boy... The Nature Boy failed... He failed to get his hands on someone who deserves the full attention of the Heavyweight Champion of the World. Some people out there win titles just like this one and it goes to their heads. They think they’re the only person in the world that counts and they ignore everyone else... well I’m not like that. Nick Bockwinkel, I recognise you as a former World Champion. I recognise you as a great competitor and I recognise that you were unable to face me in the ring last week... I don’t blame you for any of that... I do blame you though for thinking that you could match-up to me in the first place!

“Yes, I recognise that you’re a former world champion but you never held THIS belt Jack! THIS is the REAL World Heavyweight Championship. Look it up! Lou Thesz! Gene Kiniski! Dory Funk! Jack Briscoe! THIS is their belt! A lineage of the greatest wrestlers the world has ever known. Do you know what name isn’t on that list? Nick Bockwinkel’s! I don’t know who held your belt before and I don’t care. I don’t care about ANY other world title because as far as I’m concerned I’m the holder of the only title that means a damn in this business. I drive in limousines, I ride in jet planes, I steal the kisses and I don’t care who knows it!

“Nick Bockwinkel, you think you can match up to me? Then here’s your chance. In three weeks time at NWA Mayhem, me and you. One on One. In the centre of the ring – let’s see if you can finally take your place amongst the wrestling gods. Only thing standing in your way is the greatest wrestler who ever lived... As threatened earlier in the night, Bob Orton Jr. is fired up for this one and takes the match to Stan Lane from the opening bell. An enthralling backwards and forwards bout, the new US Tag Team champion had his chances to win but Orton’s sheer aggression was the overriding factor in this match. With Steve Keirn having been taken out earlier it might’ve been expected that the Horsemen would take advantage of the situation but none of their associates made their way to ringside, leaving Orton to finish the job on his own. Lane though managed to turn the momentum his way and after a period of dominance looked to have the match won –after stunning Orton, Lane jumped to the top rope looking for a double axe handle, while the referee was fixing a loose turnbuckle on the other side of the ring. Before Lane could make his leap, however...

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/HonkyTonkMan.jpg

... The Honky Tonk Man (as he was identified by the announcers) ran into the ringside area and made a beeline for Lane. Not seeing him coming, Lane was soon flying through the air, having been shoved off the top turnbuckle!

Landing in a crumpled heap, Lane was down for the count. Orton shook the cobwebs and picked up his fallen foe. Nailing him with a superplex there was no way back for Stan Lane.

What a dream match Flair and Bockwinkle would have. Still think at this time Nick could still go in the ring.

Agreed! Two of the greatest wrestlers of all time - facing off one on one. Interesting fact. When I took over JCP in this save game I had no intention of using Nick - it was just when I was doing my research of the competition that I noticed he wasn't in the AWA. This seemed to be a crying shame to me - so I picked him up to be a road agent or colour commentator when I decided to give him a run in the ring during my trial month to see how he went... and he stole the show! Bringing Bock in freed up Dusty to do something else for a while and would let me establish Bob Orton in a major feud.

It's a real life dream feud and even at that age, I agree that Bockwinkel could still go - both men had real respect for one another and I wanted to reflect that in the feud as well before they start getting too personal!

Thanks for the kind words as well by the way! Appreciated!

While Bob Orton Jr makes his way out to the ring, tonight’s guest colour commentator The Honky Tonk Man explains that this is a one shot only deal – he came to the NWA to wrestle not sit about gassing like an old woman. Bob Caudle and Tony Schiavone, sounding relieved explain that Magnum T.A. will be back next week…

Bob Orton is here to allow the Florida fans to thank him for taking out the trash two weeks ago and to promise that if Dusty Rhodes is stupid enough to show up in Daytona Beach then he’ll be sending him packing too.

Orton: "Hey fat boy! If you’re in the back then why don’t you come out here and make me do something you’re gonna regret but I’m gonna enjoy?!!"

That’s all it took for a fired up Dusty Rhodes to come running down the aisle in his street clothes and straight into the ring. Orton looked to continue the goading on the microphone but The Dream was clearly in no mood to listen flying straight at the stunned Orton! A savage beatdown took place much to the delight of the crowd who roared on every punch from Dusty. It’s not long before a wave of backstage workers and lower card wrestlers are out to break up the fracas!

The Raging Bull was back in action against former stablemate The Warlord in our first bout of the night. Fernandez has been having his life made a living hell by former manager Paul Jones but he was strangely subdued tonight, the announcers speculate that Number One has his mind on the tag title match coming up later on. Without Jones to guide him effectively, the Warlord looked lost and for all his size and weight advantage, his brawling skills were more than matched by the powerful Fernandez – coming off the ropes he caught Warlord with a Flying Burrito to pick up the pinfall victory.

Bockwinkel: "Ric Flair, no matter how you try to cajole or provoke me the result shall always be the same. Nick Bockwinkel has always done things HIS way and in HIS own time so if I tell you that I’m above having to lower my professional or personal standards by stepping into a ring with you then believe me, that’s the case. BUT… I will say this… I heard that you’re young protégé the so called ‘Mr. Fantastic’ Terry Taylor was running his mouth off about his loss in last week’s Television Title match… well just like the millions around the country watching Friday Night Showdown last week, I saw that Mr. Taylor just doesn’t have it.

"Is that what you’re teaching your student, Ric Flair? To complain and whine when things don’t go his way? Lazer Tron won that match fair and square Ric, you know it, I know it and deep in his heart Terry Taylor has to know that to… so I’ll tell you what Ric – you want a chance to meet me in the ring and I want the chance to show young Terrence the error of his ways… why don’t we combine the two? You and Taylor against Lazer Tron and I. I’ve spoken to Lazer Tron already and he’s promised that if Taylor can pin either one of us down to the canvas then he’ll give him a re-match at NWA Mayhem… and I’ll give you what you want. You and I: One on One."

Former NWA Tag Team champions Chris Champion & Sean Royal have been on something of a slump of late, failing to qualify for the Crockett Cup and watching other teams take spots that rightly should’ve been theirs. Well if they’ve been at fault before then they weren’t tonight! The New Breed were fired up and it left Jaggers and Bart all at sea, quicker than their lumbering foes The New Breed used the speed advantage to the utmost – forcing first Jaggers and later Bart on to the back foot. The finish came with a standing kick to the jaw of Jaggers from Chris Champion who dropped down to record the three count.

One half of the NWA US Tag Team champions, Steve Keirn has been on a roll since returning to the NWA two months ago. On the other hand, Kevin Sullivan has been much quieter of late. Slowly turning around his in-ring fortunes Sullivan has been racking up wins recently. Keirn, for his part, made for an uneasy wrestler furtively checking to make sure the Honky Tonk Man hadn’t moved from his place at the announcers’ table. Throughout the match Honky Tonk continually ran Keirn down but refused, when asked, to explain what his problem seemed to be with the Fabulous Ones... Keirn was right to be nervous but it shouldn’t have been of the Honky Tonk Man...

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/AustinIdol.jpghttp://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/EddieGilbert.jpg

... because from the back came Eddie Gilbert & Austin Idol and it was pretty clear what was on their collective minds! While Sullivan distracted the referee the Memphis Mafia entered the ring from behind and took Keirn out with an assisted Hotshot. The Mafia slid to the outside while Sullivan performed a double stomp on the helpless Keirn.

Given their title shot after being unfairly eliminated from the Crockett Cup, the Von Erich brothers took the match from the get go to the champions. Unlike earlier in the night, Paul Jones was firmly invested in this clash and regularly shouted advice at an increasingly frustrated Ivan Koloff throughout the bout. Koloff’s frustrations seemed to stem from Vladimir Petrov’s inability to press home any advantage that he himself was able to build. On two occasions he caught one of the Von Erichs in the opposite corner of the ring only for the Texans to escape and make the last minute tag despite Petrov’s power and strength advantage. For the third time, Koloff isolated a Von Erich, this time Kevin, and made the tag out to Petrov while his opponent was slumped against the corner turnbuckles. Vladimir ran straight at Kevin who instinctively threw up a leg and caught the massive Russian in the head. Quick as a cat, Kevin bounced off the ropes and caught the reeling Petrov with a diving crossbody to pick up the three count and win the titles!

LazerTron & Nick Bockwinkel vs Ric Flair & Bob Orton Jr.

Looking less than ecstatic to be in the building tonight, the Nature Boy has been unusually quiet declining an opportunity to address the crowd before the match instead he seems focused on proving a point to Bockwinkel... either that or the veteran has gotten under his skin. Taking the matter seriously, Flair spent the entire match coaching Taylor from the outside – telling him what to do and when choosing to leave Taylor to ‘learn the hard way’. When Flair did enter the ring, business certainly picked up between him and LazerTron – the two exchanged hiptosses and chops while the crowd slowly bought into the drama. When LazerTron tagged out you could’ve heard a pin drop in the arena. The resulting lock up and big shove from Bockwinkel send Flair sprawling and, just as we’d seen in the photo from years before, Flair was on his knees begging Bockwinkel not to hit him... this time though Bockwinkel wasn’t buying it and he unloaded on the champ!

The match built up slowly with both sides getting a fair amount of offense in, at the final bell it was Flair & Taylor who were victorious when LazerTron seemed to trip over his own feet before Taylor capitalised with a patented five arm smash sent him down to the canvas and allowed Taylor to grab the pinfall victory.

That should've been May 13th, not 15th.

I guess we know why the Von Erichs and Freebirds went out early in the Crockett Cup now--they'll be feuding over the WORLD titles, not the US. I'm sure that'll be more interesting than anything The Russians could have done with the belts.

I was stunned when LazerTron beat Taylor the first time around, but now I get it--you're saving it for the PPV. (If LazerTron wins again, I'll be REALLY stunned.)

Curious to see what happens with Honky.

A triumphant Ric Flair is being interviewed by Precious.

Ric: “Precious baby! The line for Space Mountain starts back there honey so gimmie that mic! WOOOOOOOOOOOO! Nick Bockwinkel! How does it feel?! How does it feel to be a loser! WOOOOOO! Last week you bet me that there was no way your team would lose against me and Mr. Fantastic and me and look at you now! WOOOOO! HA HA HA!

And now you have to meet ME in the ring!!! I’m going to embarrass you! I’m going to humble you!! And you know what else? When I’m done with you you’re never going to be able to walk right again! That’s right Bockwinkel! You’ll be hobbling around with a plastic hip when I’m finished with you! WOOOOOOOOOO!!!! And the best thing of all Jack is that you did this to yourself!!! I’ll see you at Mayhem alright Bockwinkel! I’ll see you there and I’m even willing to put this NWA World Title on the line just to give you something to aim for – not that you’re ever getting near it because Buddy, you ain’t half the man that the Nature Boy is! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”

Ron Garvin vs. Ron Simmons

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/RonGarvin.jpg vs. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/RonSimmons.jpghttp://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/MrT.jpg

After running his mouth last week in challenging Barry Windham, Ron Garvin finds himself in another tough test – this time against the raw power and brutality of Ron Simmons! Hollywood star Mr. T. is at ringside and can be seen intently pounding the canvas and demanding that Simmons inflicts pain on the Rugged One. Simmons is keen not to disappoint... Throughout the course of the match the announce team speculate as to what has happened to Lex Luger. Meanwhile, his former All-American tag team partner is used to man-handling his opponents but Ron Garvin is unlike anyone Simmons has fought in a long, long time! Ronnie’s famous Hands of Stone have battled out of tougher prospects than Simmons can give him…

...but the numbers game is too great and the wicked kick to the gut that sends Garvin crashing down to the ropes and hanging over the apron was all the excuse Mr. T. needed to connect with a rolled chain around his fist. Garvin is K-O’d and it’s simplicity itself for Simmons to roll him over and pick up the victory!

Winner: Ron Simmons d. Ron Gavin by pinfall in 13:29

The victorious Von Erich brothers are standing by with their newly won NWA World Tag Team Titles and David Crockett.

Kevin: "Let me tell you David, I’ve had many highlights in my career and am proud to say that I’ve served my family’s name with honour… but for me the proudest moment of that career was last week on this very show. Because that night me and my little brother Kerry made our Daddy proud when we won those NWA World Titles for the red-white and blue of USA!"

Kerry: "That’s right – I’m the luckiest guy in the world right now! I get to go out to that ring and do something that I love for all of you fans, and I get to do it alongside my big brother – that’s the greatest feeling in the world, believe me."

Kevin: "Terry Gordy, Michael Hayes – I know you weren’t happy when you heard that we’d been given our title shot – but how about I make it up to you? If you boys have still got the guts to try and settle this in the ring then why don’t you bring them to NWA Mayhem with you next month, and we’ll bring these gold belts… why don’t we see who’s still got who’s at the end of the night?!”

To the strains of the Soviet Union’s anthem and draped in the sickle and hammer flag, Ivan Koloff makes his way to the ring, an air of disdain on his face

Koloff: “Americanner scum! You dare boo me?! You dare throw abuse at Ivan Koloff, mighty Russian Bear? Pah! You do not understand the wind of change blowing through the world, the wind of change that will blow down Western Imperalism and return Mighty Russian Peoples to the number one in the world… just like Ivan Koloff… I have fact for your Americans. This belt this United States of Traitors belt that is held by Russian favourite son… I holds it for longer than ANY American… Anybody… I am the GREATEST UNITED STATES CHAMPION OF ALL TIME! A RUSSIAN! THE RUSSIAN! I AM BETTER THAN ALL AMERICANNERS!!! What is more… this belt… this belt is no more… I proclaim from now that this belt shall be the NWA USSR Heavyweight Title! And I shall go on defending with honour and for glory of Mother Russia. The Russian Bear stands alone. And he challenges any American to come and try to take my glory.”

The disgusted announce team confirm that Koloff is the longest standing NWA US Title holder but that they don’t think it gives him the right to change the name of the title while Koloff makes his way back to the locker room…

Jushin Liger vs Spike

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/JushinLiger.jpg vs. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/ModSquadSpike.jpg

Liger has been on a fairly impressive roll since his NWA debut, and having beaten Basher of the MOD Squad two weeks ago, it’s up to Spike to provide him with a challenge tonight instead. Unfortunately, if anything, Spike was less equipped to deal with Liger’s fast paced assault than his brother had been! Liger wasted no time in dis-orientating Spike who barely landed a blow against the super energetic Japanese cruiserweight. The always impressive Liger Bomb sealed the win.

Winner: Jushin Liger d. Spike by pinfall in 6:46

The Honky Tonk Man is in the ring and he’s flanked by Eddie Gilbert & Austin Idol – The Memphis Mafia.

“Thank you very much you’re a beautiful audience! See what everyone wants to seems to want to know is why I, the greatest musician and wrestler to come out of Memphis Tennessee, have a problem with Stan Lane. The truth is I don’t have a problem with him… or Steve Keirn for that matter… save for one thing – they keep referring to themselves as the Fabulous Ones… we all know there’s only one Fabulous One around here and you’re looking at him! The Honky Tonk Man has his own protection now, and the Memphis Mafia are gonna be taking care of business, you better believe it!”

The threesome leave the ringside area before the next set of wrestlers can make their way out.

Non-Title Match

The Fabulous Ones vs. The Terminator & Johnny Ace

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/SteveKeirn.jpghttp://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/StanLane.jpg vs. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/TheTerminator.jpghttp://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/JohnnyAce.jpg

A glorified squash run out for the US tag team champions in this non-title bout saw the Fabulous Ones thoroughly dominate the unlikely duo. Stan Lane got the victory with a renegade drop on The Terminator but the most surprising thing about the match-up seemed to be the lack of The Honky Tonk Man or the Memphis Mafia making their presence known!

Winner: The Fabulous Ones d. Johnny Ace & The Terminator by pinfall in 4:49

Terry Taylor is in the back with David Crockett with a word for the reigning Television Champion.

Taylor: Ha Ha… LazerTron… you got lucky two weeks ago but guess what pal, you’re luck’s about to go crashing straight out at NWA Mayhem I want you in the ring for that Television title and I’m gonna leave you with a serious malfunction when I ram my boot straight up your ass!”

The Barbarian vs. Barry Windham

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/TheBarbarian.jpg vs. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/BarryWindham.jpg

A knock-down drag ‘em out affair, The Barbarian and Barry Windham refused to give an inch to each other in this highly physical match-up. In a night dominated by hard hitting encounters, this one was no different. Despite his size advantage, The Barbarian had difficulty in man-handling the Horseman who, as well as brawling, has an added technical flair that allowed him to wear the big man down with liberal uses of headlocks and armbars. A clinical performance in the end for Windham who looked keen to prove that he was no coward before slapping a DDT on his savage foe in the middle of the ring.

After the match Windham grabs a microphone.

Barry Windham: "Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie… Never let it be said that I didn’t give you a chance. For old time’s sake I thought – let the old guy off with it. He didn’t mean anything by it… don’t give him the whupping that his mouth has earned him… but you couldn’t let it be could ya? You had to run your mouth and start writing cheques that you can’t cash. You want to meet me in a cage at Mayhem? There’s something wrong with you… but after I’m finished with you at Mayhem there’ll be more than one thing wrong with ya…"

Nick Bockwinkel is standing by in the interview area, a wry smile on his face:

Bockwinkel: "Mr Flair. I’d like to congratulate yourself and your young protégé, Mr Taylor on your fine victory last week…. But Ric… do me one favour. Now that the ink has dried on that contract for next week’s Mayhem, sit back and have a think about what happened here. Think about how I offered you nothing but respect and you beat me down like a dog. Think about how I told you, I told the world, that my only regret was that I had never become NWA World Champion… now look back at that contract again… look back at how it was YOU who won the right to face ME… now have one last thought Ric Flair and ask yourself, if this was all your idea then why am I the one with nothing to lose, but everything to gain…"

Bockwinkel smiles enigmatically at the camera and raises an eyebrow...

Dusty Rhodes vs Vladimir Petrov

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/DustyRhodes.jpg vs. http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/VladimirPetrov.jpg

Our main event this evening was something of a retro affair! Having spent large parts of 1987 feuding, Dusty Rhodes and Vladimir Petrov showed that there was no love lost in yet another hard hitting encounter. For the entire year it felt as if Petrov just couldn’t catch a break over The American Dream and tonight was to prove no different in the end. The confirmation from the announce team that Bob Orton Jr had left the building earlier in the day allowed the Dream to focus on the matter at hand and, unfortunately for Petrov, he bore the brunt of Dusty’s frustrations. A bionic elbow sealed the deal.

Winner: Dusty Rhodes by pinfall in 17:22

Grade: C+

Overall Show Grade: C+

TBS TV Rating: 4.29

Backstage Notes

- The Barbarian picked up a minor injury but is not expected to lose any in-ring time.

-I see an inconclusive finish to prolong this feud.</p><p> </p><p>

NWA USSR Heavweight Championship: Manny Fernandez vs <strong>Ivan Koloff ©</strong></p><p>

-I still think Ivan's title reign is coming to an end soon, but I don't think Manny is the guy to do it. Looking ahead, the Great American Bash seems like a fitting place for someone to take this belt off of Ivan.</p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Television Championship: LazerTron © vs <strong>Mr. Fantastic Terry Taylor</strong></p><p>

-LazerTron pulled the upset the first time, but I think his luck is about to run out. I wonder if you'll eventually ditch the LazerTron gimmick and repackage him as Hector Guerrero? For the last few weeks the NWA has become an unsafe working environment for someone of my standing… I had no choice but to remove my physical service until someone, anyone could control that maniac Dusty Rhodes… I can assure you all though that my lawyers have intervened and it is now illegal for Mr Rhodes to lay a finger on me before this Saturday which mea…”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/DustyRhodes.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/NickBockwinkel.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Orton’s diatribe is cut short by Dusty Rhodes’ music and he steps out alongside Nick Bockwinkel! Enforced by Bob Orton Jr’s refusal to get into physical contact with Dusty Rhodes, the special stipulation declares that if Bob Orton Jr. tags into the ring, Dusty Rhodes must tag out and for parity reasons, Nick Bockwinkel and Ric Flair have the same restriction as a pairing. Although interesting, the restriction was ultimately frustrating for the fans who were desperate to see Bockwinkel & Flair hook-up as well as Orton & Rhodes get physical… it was not to be though – instead we got over 30 minutes of tag team action with Rhodes and Flair’s interactions in particular getting the crowd pumped! Perhaps it was the odd rules or the lack of cohesive chemistry between Dusty & Bockwinkel but the match did not deliver like it might have been expected to. The match ended in chaos when, after getting the better of Dusty in an exchange, Flair tagged in Bob Orton Jr. Rather than waiting for Dusty to tag out to Bockwinkel, Orton attacked Rhodes! Beating him down to the canvas the referee called for the bell, Orton having broken his own rule! Orton was dragged off Rhodes while Flair and Bockwinkel stared each other out from the other side of the ring… Tony Schiavone is convinced that this Saturday at Mayhem just might be the biggest in the history of our sport!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner: Dusty Rhodes & Nick Bockwinkel by disqualification in 31:29</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: C+</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">Overall Show Grade: B-</span></strong></p><p><strong> TBS TV Rating: 4.23</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Backstage Notes</strong><p> <em>- None</em></p></div></blockquote>

Two teams that know each other intimately well, The Freebirds and The Von Erichs worked hard to get the crowd involved and succeeded in spades with this slowly built tag classic which did wonders to re-establish the NWA World Tag Team titles after a less than illustrious 12 months. Both teams, although fighting over something very personal, are clearly interested in the tag team belts too – the Von Erichs are proud to be champions while the Freebirds are determined that the Von Erichs shouldn’t be proud of anything! </p><p> </p><p> Despite the brutality of their opponents, the Von Erichs refused to give any quarter to their opponents and we were treated to a vicious and hard hitting match-up that either team could realistically have won. Victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat when Kerry was trapped with his head between Gordy’s legs. Preparing him for what would’ve been the killer powerbomb, Gordy made the mistake of pausing to showboat for the crowd. Seizing the opportunity, Kevin ran the length of the apron and clotheslined Gordy before rushing head first into Hayes and dragging him to the floor. Meanwhile, while Gordy dropped back to the canvas, Kerry instinctively held on to the big man’s legs and swung through into a cradle pin. Petrov though proved to be something a little different. While he was as slow and sluggish compared to Liger as the rest of his foes to date, there seemed to be a much higher risk that if he caught him, Petrov would make the Japanese cruiserweight pay the penalty! However, although he came close a few times, Petrov failed to connect with the power moves required to slow Liger down properly, an attempted chokeslam from Petrov failed when Liger slipped around the back and connected with a standing drop kick that sent the massive Russian careering into the turnbuckle before bouncing back out and into the middle of the ring facing up at the lights. Quick as a cat, Liger leaps on to the top turnbuckle and unleashes a Shooting Star Press to pick up the three count and his most impressive victory to date!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner: Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger by pinfall in 9:20</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: D+</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>NWA World Television Championship</strong></p><p><strong> LazerTron © vs Mr. Fantastic Terry Taylor (w/ Ole Anderson)</strong></p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/LazerTron.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/TerryTaylor.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/OleAnderson.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> Mr. Fantastic makes his way to the ring a look of supreme confidence in his eyes, anyone looking at him would be forgiven for thinking that HE was the NWA World Television champion judging by his demeanour! Despite LazerTron’s victory a few weeks ago most experts believed that this one was Taylor’s to lose and despite the arrogance displayed by Taylor, his confident claims to be a ‘true’ Horseman would be borne out against the TV champ. LazerTron though, clearly hasn’t been reading the script and came at Taylor with a fervour and determination that threw Mr Fantastic for a loop. The early going went the way of the man from the future and the crowd were deeply behind him. Taylor though showed remarkable composure and brought the match back under his control, slowly but surely – demonstrating exceptional ring presence, he countered an attempted flying head scissors from LazerTron and turned it into a mini powerbomb before pulling back and delivering a variation of the Five Arm smash to his fallen opponent. Mr. T. on the outside proved an interesting distraction for the majority of the crowd and his signature pounding on the apron seemed to wake Luger from a walking slumber on a few occasions. Lane and Gilbert opened things up for us while the Honky Tonk Man took to arguing with Steve Keirn at his side of the ring – the referee had to continually tell Honky to get back to his side of the ring and the distractions generally allowed the Memphis Mafia to cheat their way to a turning of the tide every time the referee’s back was turned… it was to no avail, however, Idol was caught preening to the crowd by Stan Lane who quickly unleashed a massive Savate Kick out of nowhere to grab a pinfall victory while a shellshocked Honky Tonk Man looked on!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winners: The Fabulous Ones via pinfall in 17:51 to retain the NWA US Tag Team Titles</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: C</strong></p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/RicFlair.jpg</span></p><div style="text-align:center;"></div><p> </p><p> Ric Flair is on hype duty for the Horsemen’s battles tonight. What hadn’t really been covered was that Windham seems to delight in inflicting untold amounts of pain and punishment on others and he was right at home in the steel cage! Ron Garvin though is no slouch either and he gave as good as he got for the duration of this wicked and vicious brawl. Both men used the cage as a weapon and it wasn’t long until Garvin had been busted open, his blonde hair gradually turning a delicate shade of claret, Garvin didn’t slow down and evened the score by ramming Windham’s head into the corner of the cage. </p><p> </p><p> For the first 20 minutes of the bout, neither men made any attempt to leave – clearly they were enjoying the punishment they were inflicting too much. In fact it was Garvin’s eventual attempt to leave the cage that brought his downfall. Climbing the cage alongside the fleeing Windham both men threw one leg over the top of the cage before sitting it out and exchanging blows, a particularly hard blow to the head sent Garvin rocking and but for a bit of luck would’ve sent him crashing to the canvas below, instead he got his foot caught in the mesh but it wasn’t enough to stop him toppling over, losing his balance at the same time. Unlike his recent matches, however, Orton does not call out at Magnum T.A. or harass the announce team in any way – this is presumably as a result of the passing of Mr Caudle – it doesn’t stop Orton from utilising his other ‘tricks’ however… Orton made a big deal of refusing to wrestle Rhodes last week in their tag team main event and this one takes an absolute age to get under way with Orton stalling for time and Rhodes becoming visibly more frustrated… Taking almost five minutes for the first blow to be landed, the slow and drawn out nature of the piece up until this point lulled the crowd, and the Dream, into a false sense of security so that when Orton did explode into action it took everyone by surprise. Unleashing a volley of blistering shots, the Dream was pushed on to his back foot and began responding in kind – the crowd eating up the slugfest that the match degenerated into. </p><p> </p><p> Not one for the purists this was another bitter battle that saw both men beat the living hell out of one another! Orton though wasn’t done with stalling tactics and took regular breaks by leaping to the outside to break Dusty’s momentum – picking up two very long nine counts in the process… trying the trick for the third time, Dusty had enough and chased Orton outside, coming nose to nose with Ole Anderson in the process and bulldozing the Executive Consultant out of the way! The hold-up had allowed Orton to roll back into the ring and then back out behind Dusty again though and a rammed knee to the back sent the Dream into the ring post, blowing his head open with a massive gash! </p><p> </p><p> Fighting through the crimson mask, Rhodes and Orton continued to brawl outside while the referee counted down… beating the 10 count by milliseconds, both men continued to brawl around the ring, reaching low into his trunks Orton pulled out a set of brass knuckles and blatantly clocked Rhodes in the middle of the forehead with them! The referee had no option but to call for the bell as Rhodes fell to the canvas and Orton continues his assault before Anderson drags him off and pulls him towards the back!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner: Dusty Rhodes by disqualification at 20.56</strong></p><p> <strong>Grade: B+</strong></p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/RicFlair.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/NickBockwinkel.jpg</span></p><div style="text-align:center;"></div><p> </p><p> A music video hyping the events leading to Nick Bockwinkel and Ric Flair’s meeting over the NWA World Heavyweight Title.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: B-</strong></p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>NWA World Heavyweight Title</strong></p></div><p> <strong>Nick Bockwinkel vs Ric Flair © (w/ Ole Anderson)</strong></p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/NickBockwinkel.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/RicFlair.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/OleAnderson.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> With the special rules of the previous night’s tag bout, just like Orton & Rhodes earlier in the night – this was the first time that Nick Bockwinkel and Ric Flair had locked up after two months of build up. And while not as intense as that earlier bout – both men still put on a stellar effort. Flair is very much used to being despised wherever he goes but the World Champion had the added pressure of performing in the home region of his opponent, and one who himself had been declared a World Champion for a number of years… fitter and younger than Bockwinkel, most pundits felt that this was Flair’s to win… but Bockwinkel was not willing to go down without a fight and he stood tall against the Nature Boy matching him hold for hold in something of a technical masterclass. </p><p> </p><p> Taking over 25 minutes to reach its conclusion this was a game of cat and mouse that the crowd seemed to believe could truly go either way. The highlight of the bout came when, after a period of domination by the champ, Bockwinkel turned the tide and came back hard at him. Forced to his knees, Flair with a wide eyed look begged for mercy in a repeat of what had happened that night in Winnipeg, in that photograph which had started this whole thing off two months ago… Bockwinkel smiled and without taking his eyes off Flair slowly shook his head… Naitch stopped the theatrics and looked to the side as if searching for a way to escape but was just a fraction too late to avoid the huge slap to the face from Bockwinkel that dropped him to the canvas. A look of shock on his face, Flair looked back up at Bockwinkel before scampering out of the way of the big boot heading towards his face! The crowd roared their approval as the rage in Nick Bockwinkel became clear for all to see – the Ice Man façade had finally broken down as he pursued the ultimate prize.</p><p> </p><p> As Flair got to his feet and attempted to flee the ring, Bockwinkel lunged and caught him in a sleeper! Flair jumped wildly around looking for a way out but Bockwinkel seemed to cinch the hold in deeper as the lights began to go out. Referee Earl Hebner performs the first check – as Flair’s arm falls to his side, he tries again and the arm slumps to his side. At that point Ole Anderson leaps on to the ring apron and begins to try and catch Hebner’s attention – Hebner though wants no part of it and is raising Flair’s arm for the third time… it drops… no! Flair’s arm raises a fraction of an inch! He’s still awake! A smart pro, Bockwinkel knows that he obviously can’t make the hold take so he quickly releases Flair from the hold and swings him back in towards his body. Catching Flair with a shot to the stomach, it bends the almost unconscious in half and he pulls him in for the piledriver!</p><p> </p><p> BANG! Bockwinkel connects with the piledriver! I’m a big fan of Liger – especially at that time and he’s one of the best talents out there – I agree that he’s not really WWF material at this time how far up the card he can go, I’m not exactly sure but the NWA talent pool is a lot shallower in this world than reality thanks to the AJPW, AWA & WWF talent swoops!
