Recently returned from injury, this is Steve Keirn’s toughest test in a while as Gilbert is like a rabid dog – the scent of singles gold clearly in his nostrils. With the Honky Tonk Man willing him on from the outside, Stan Lane has taken up position in the opposite corner hoping to be able to stop HTM as effectively as he had in last week’s match-up between Austin Idol and Jerry Lawler… this time though Honky Tonk was ready for him and distracting the referee by rushing at Lane, it allows… </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/AustinIdol.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Austin Idol to sneak to ringside and throw a steel chair to his tag team partner! Nobody gave them a chance… but their bravery in the face of almost certain death earned them the respect of their enemies and the entire world. They were Americans and through their deeds they showed that whatever wrongs they’d committed in their lives paled into insignificance in the light of their actions on the battlefield.</p><p> </p><p> “Ric Flair, you laid your challenge out on the line for me to face you at the Great American Bash in two weeks time. You made it perfectly clear to me that if I fail in my quest to unseat you as the NWA World Heavyweight Champion that never again would I have an opportunity to test myself against you… and, whether you realised it or not, you offered me an out should I fail to beat you in two weeks time for never meeting you in that ring again… but I don’t need your charity and I don’t need your sympathy. Just like the men at the Alamo, nobody expects me to overcome my foes – I’m outnumbered, I’m outgunned and I’m on the back foot… but just like those men I’m willing to pay the ultimate prize to fight for the glory I believe in because Ric Flair if I cannot beat you at the Great American Bash then I don’t WANT to challenge you again, I don’t want to challenge ANYONE in the ring again… I’ve had a long career and successful career and if you win this match in two weeks time… it belongs to you… I’ll put up everything I have which is the same as nothing at all – My Career for your title. Winner takes all. </p><p> </p><p> "Remember the Alamo… Ric Flair, and remember that there’s nothing more dangerous than a trapped animal…"</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: B-</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/HectorGuerrero.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/Tara.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Hector Guerrero is with Tara:</p><p> </p><p> Guerrero: It’s funny, I just listened to Nick Bockwinkel talking about the Alamo and for me, a man who is proud of his Mexican background the story holds a different meaning… Ivan Koloff last week you attacked my flesh and blood, my hermano, my familia… I cannot let this lie. You have awoken a fire in me Ivan Koloff – for years I have been content to play the part of a ‘robot from the future’ hiding from myself and my heritage, ashamed of my roots… but now… I am a GUERRERO! The Son of Gory Guerrero! The brother of Chavo Guerrero and… an American… a PROUD American! I was born in Mexico City… but my home is El Paso, Texas. My brothers and I learned to wrestle in America, we vote in America and we raise our children in the American Way… Texas is the bridge between my peoples – the gateway to Mexico and the United States – for me the Alamo is a story of unity and you have reunited me with my heritage… for you Ivan Koloff, this is the greatest mistake you’ll ever make!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: D+</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/DustyRhodes.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/DickMurdoch.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Dusty Rhodes is preparing for a TV commercial for the Great American Bash when Dick Murdoch interrupts.</p><p> </p><p> Murdoch: “Dusty… you and me… we ain’t really seen eye to eye for a few years but we go back and that’s why I’m out here tonight. Hayes nails Whatley with a dropkick that sends him careering into the ropes and leaves him tangled there, Conway Jr. isn’t quite so lucky – Gordy lifts him high in the air and delivers a devastating powerbomb before hitting the canvas for the pin… The Freebirds have utterly crushed the Jive Tones in what could be record time!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner: The Fabulous Freebirds by pinfall in 1:55</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: D+</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> They don’t look satisfied though and after having a couple of cheap shots at the tied up Whatley, Hayes drops outside and pulls the protective mat up from the floor – Gordy drags the deadweight Tiger outside of the ring – the cameras zoom in on his face as he callously smiles before lifting Conway Jr high in the air and…. NO!!!!!!!!</p><p> </p><p> Gordy delivers a sickening powerbomb onto the exposed floor while Whatley looks on helplessly! The announcers are speechless as Magnum TA calls for help from the back – Jim Ross has lost all composure and is calling Gordy all the names under the sun – the Freebirds don’t seem happy with this at all and it looks as if Jim Ross might be next to take the ride when…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/KerryvonErich.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/KevinVonErich.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> The Von Erichs are out! Kerry climbs into the ring and helps Whatley out of the ropes as he and Kevin accompany Conway Jr into the back from his stretcher following in the Freebirds’ wake.</p><p> </p><p> There’s a tense staredown as Steve Williams enters the ring area for his match with Kerry but there’s no more violence as the announcers demand that sanctions be placed on the Freebirds for this latest act.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: C-</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Kerry Von Erich vs Steve Williams</strong></p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/KerryvonErich.jpg</span> <strong>vs.</strong> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/SteveWilliams.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> The Modern Day Warrior is clearly rattled by what he’s just witnessed and Dr. Death looks to take advantage by taking the fight to Von Erich from the get go. At least with the Freebirds expelled to the back, there’s little chance of them returning to interfere in this match and as the bout continues, so too does Kerry’s confidence – rocking Williams with a stiff series of right hand shots and showing that he’s no push over. Williams attempts to swing the match back in his favour by utilising his size and strength advantages but Von Erich turns that back in his favour for the finish – with Williams making a dive at the stepping back Kerry, he instinctively throws his hand upwards and out catching Dr Death’s head in the dreaded Iron Claw! Williams own momentum drags him down to the canvas and Von Erich’s vice like grip doesn’t let up! What they might lack in experience, they make up for in cohesion as the trio know each other very well and certainly more than the odd couple team of Lex Luger and Junkyard Dog. JYD though has been at the top of his game for a number of years and Luger recently came close to shocking the NWA World Champion across two matches and is now being touted as a future champion by many industry insiders. Tonight he's on the wrong end of a 3 on 2 advantage and when one of those extra bodies is the former Toughman contest winner Mr. T this is going to be far from a walk in the park!</p><p> </p><p> JYD in particular is pumped for this - he wants a shot at Mr. T and knows that victory here forces the leader of the enemy to put his own body on the line against him. Mr. T. is reluctant to get involved in the bout - sending Cameron & Simmons in to do his dirty work for him... When Luger and Simmons finally clash the crowd react positively in favour of the Total Package - the initial test of strength is one for the ages but it is Luger who takes control - beating back the 'Master of the Dominator' with apparent ease. Larry Cameron is little more than a punchbag for Lou Albano's duo and it's Simmons who turns the tide back in the favour of The Enemy, beating Luger down to his knees with a number of vicious blows. It's at this point that Mr. T. looks to enter the ring... blind tagging in from Simmons, Mr. T. measures up Luger and kicks him when he's down, continuing to kick into the Total Package as the crowd howl in protest. Mr. T. drops down for the pin...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> NO! With a huge demonstration of strength, Luger throws Mr. T. off him, sending him flying into the air... as he scrambles for the tag, Luger grabs him by the leg and drags him over to his own corner to tag in the Junkyard Dog! JYD unloads on the Chicago toughman as the crowd becomes unhinged... Mr. T. has a trick up his sleeve though, pulling out his brass knuckles from his tights he nails JYD, knocking him down but sprawling backwards towards his own corner... Mr. T. doesn't wait around and dashes back to tag in Larry Cameron as Lex Luger makes the tag on the fallen Dog - Cameron runs straight as Luger who nails him with a huge spinebuster! Staying on Luger rolls through for the pin.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Simmons is in the ring and diving at Luger...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 3...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> It's too late! <p>Shame that main event graded out so low--though I guess I deserve some of the blame for that, as I leeched off as much of JYD's popularity as I could before I got rid of him. <img alt=":o" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/redface.png.900245280682ef18c5d82399a93c5827.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> Plus I wouldn't exactly call anyone in the match a particularly good worker (never saw Cameron though, so I can't judge him.)</p><p> </p><p>

I'm intrigued by the little bits hinting at possible friction between Ole and the other Horsemen. I have some theories on where that might be going, but will hold my tongue for now. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

The Cruiserweight title seems custom-made for Liger. I'd be very surprised if anyone else is the first champion.</p><p> </p><p>

Flair vs. Bockwinkel, title vs career, seems like a match worthy of headlining a big show like Great American Bash. I hope they deliver.</p>

With his trademark punches raining down on Taylor, the crowd are firmly behind Lawler and roar their approval. Taylor is outmatched and looking for any way out that he can get! After only five minutes an exasperated Taylor drops out of the ring and after throwing his hands up in disgust at Lawler goes to walk away from the ring as the referee continues to count. Lawler though is having none of it! He charges out of the ring, shoving Ole Anderson out of his way before grabbing Taylor from behind, he spins him round and sends him flying back into the ring with an Irish Whip!</p><p> </p><p> Taylor’s survival instincts seemed to kick in and, using every ‘Nature Boy’ style trick in the book he attempted to derail Lawler’s momentum. Any gains from Mr Fantastic were short lived though and he spent the rest of the match bumping around the ring for the determined Lawler who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself! Setting Taylor up for the piledriver, Ole Anderson jumped on to the ring apron, distracting the referee. Lawler didn’t follow through with the impact move deciding instead to drop Taylor down while he argued the toss with Ole. It was all a distraction though because…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/HonkyTonkMan.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> THE HONKY TONK MAN had snuck through the crowd and hopped the guard rail behind Lawler with his trademark guitar in tow, sliding into the ring, Lawler spots him and turns when…. BANG! The Honky Tonk Man smashes him over the head with his guitar! Lawler drops to the canvas in a heap while Anderson is now almost wrestling with the referee! Honky Tonk kicks the remnants of the guitar out of the ring and drops out after it. A dazed Terry Taylor crawls over to Lawler…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 3…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Terry Taylor has pulled off a huge upset victory, albeit one that needed a huge assist from The Honky Tonk Man!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner: Terry Taylor by pinfall in 16:46 to retain the NWA World Television Title</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: C+</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">Overall Show Grade: B-</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> --</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="The Final Countdown" data-cite="The Final Countdown" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Shame that main event graded out so low--though I guess I deserve some of the blame for that, as I leeched off as much of JYD's popularity as I could before I got rid of him. <img alt=":o" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/redface.png.900245280682ef18c5d82399a93c5827.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> Plus I wouldn't exactly call anyone in the match a particularly good worker (never saw Cameron though, so I can't judge him.)<p> </p><p> I'm intrigued by the little bits hinting at possible friction between Ole and the other Horsemen. I'm interested to hear your theories because I have two very distinctly different paths I'm considering right now, let's put it that way...</p><p> </p><p> And as for Bock vs Flair - I'm hopeful that they will, with The Crippler (not the biggest spoiler ever!) in the corner of Bockwinkel it could be an emotional night whether he wins or loses!</p>

The premier wrestling event of the summer! The top stars of the NWA will be out in force as old scores are settled and new rivalries begin… it’s an event you’re sure to never forget as heroes rise, villains fall and the landscape of professional wrestling changes forever.</p><p> </p><p> Fourteen matches featuring the cream of wrestling talent comes your way exclusively on Pay-Per-View (speak to your local cable provider and demand the Great American Bash!)</p><p> </p><p> In our main event – two of the greatest champions in the history of our sport meet for the World Championship for what could be the very last time! The legendary <strong>Nick Bockwinkel</strong> puts his career on the line against <strong>‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair</strong> promising that if he can’t beat Flair then he will retire from the ring. In his corner and by his side will be his tag team partner of so many years, <strong>‘Crippler’ Ray Stevens</strong> to make sure that <strong>Ole Anderson</strong> and the rest of the Four Horsemen don’t have an influence on the outcome!</p><p> </p><p> It’s not the only title on the line though because one of the longest reigning Television champions has his chance to recapture the US title from the enemy when <strong>Ivan Koloff</strong> – the longest reigning US Title holder and self proclaimed USSR Champion puts his title against Mexican born but American bred <strong>Hector Guerrero</strong>. This battle has a personal edge to it after Koloff’s savage beating of Hector’s brother Chavo earlier this month.</p><p> </p><p> Speaking of the World Television Championship, <strong>‘Mr. Fantastic’ Terry Taylor</strong> may be a lucky man to still hold his title… but he’ll feel like his luck has run out when he steps into the ring with Native American <strong>Wahoo McDaniel</strong>! A tough talking and hard hitting man who takes no prisoners, Wahoo has seen them come and seen them go, an NWA veteran of the highest order, Taylor has his work cut out for him here even with <strong>Ole Anderson</strong> looking on!</p><p> </p><p> And a new champion will be crowned! After the retirement of the NWA World Junior title earlier this year, the NWA board have been working on a new showcase for our talented smaller workers and they’ve found one in the form of the NWA Cruiserweight Championship! The tournament to crown a new champion reaches its conclusion when <strong>Mike Graham</strong> takes on one of Japan’s brightest prospects in either <strong>Shinya Hashimoto or Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger</strong> for the new title!</p><p> </p><p> It’s not just solo belts on the line this month though as both tag team titles will be up for grabs too, starting with the NWA World Tag Team Championship and one of the bloodiest feuds in wrestling history continues to boil at the Great American Bash. <strong>The Von Erichs</strong> and <strong>The Fabulous Freebirds</strong> know each other as well as any two teams have ever known each other and they’ll be getting up close and personal again with those title belts as the ultimate prize.</p><p> </p><p> They’re not the only teams to hold ‘beef’ with each other though and <strong>The Memphis Mafia</strong> will be looking to turn their fortunes around with a victory over <strong>The Fabulous Ones</strong> and to take their NWA US Tag Titles as a reward. </p><p> </p><p> Not every feud revolves around a title belt though and for proof of that look no further than <strong>‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes</strong> and <strong>‘Cowboy’ Bob Orton Jr.</strong> who have been battling each since Orton rejoined the NWA earlier this year. The battle has turned extremely personal and there’s a sense that both men just really want to hurt each other – they’ll have plenty of opportunity to do just that in a brutal ‘I Quit’ Match that even Ole Anderson won’t be able to swing the way of his man.</p><p> </p><p> Of course regardless of the result in the I Quit match, there’s a better than average chance of seeing these superstars again… that’s not gong to be the case with either <strong>Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler</strong> or <strong>The Honky Tonk Man</strong> because the stipulation of their match-up is quite clear – the loser has to leave this area of the NWA forever…</p><p> </p><p> Two men who aren’t going anywhere in terms of the NWA but WILL be wrestling EVERYWHERE are <strong>Bam Bam Bigelow</strong> and <strong>Kevin Sullivan</strong>. The psychotic Sullivan took offence to Bam Bam Bigelow breaking his winning streak at NWA Mayhem two months ago and neither man have been able to beat the other in a straight match-up – this has lead Sullivan to launch unprovoked and vicious attacks, almost taking out <strong>Precious</strong> in his hatred of the Beast from the East. Precious has told us that she’ll be in Bigelow’s corner… not that this match will be staying in the ring as the two men will brawl around ringside with no holds barred and no disqualification rules. This time there must be a winner!</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">And in other matches: </span></p><p> </p><ul><li>Barry Windham (with Ole Anderson) seeks revenge on ‘Wildfire’ Tommy Rich. <br /></li><li>Lex Luger will have Lou Albano in his corner when he finally get his hands on former tag partner Ron Simmons.<br /></li><li>Lou Albano will also be on hand to watch Junkyard Dog take on Hollywood Star Mr. T.<br /></li><li>Former NWA World Tag Team Champions The New Breed clash with the dangerous Stan Hansen & Steve Williams<br /></li></ul><p></p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Fan Scorecard</span></p><p> </p><p> NWA World Championship vs Career: Nick Bockwinkel (w/ ‘Crippler’ Ray Stevens) vs Ric Flair © (w/ Ole Anderson)</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> NWA USSR Heavyweight Championship: Hector Guerrero vs Ivan Koloff ©</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> NWA World Television Championship: Wahoo McDaniel vs Terry Taylor ©</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> NWA World Cruiserweight Championship: (Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger or Shinya Hashimoto) vs Mike Graham</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> NWA World Tag Team Championship: The Von Erichs © vs The Fabulous Freebirds</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> NWA US Tag Team Championship: The Fabulous Ones © vs The Memphis Mafia</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> I Quit Match: ‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes vs ‘Cowboy’ Bob Orton Jr. (w/Ole Anderson)</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> Loser Leaves Town: Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler vs The Honky Tonk Man</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> Falls Count Anywhere: Bam Bam Bigelow (w/Precious) vs Kevin Sullivan</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> Tommy Rich vs Barry Windham (w/Ole Anderson)</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> Lex Luger vs Ron Simmons</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> Junkyard Dog vs Mr. T.</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> The New Breed vs Stan Hansen & Steve Williams</p><p> Comments:</p></div></blockquote>

<p>FOURTEEN MATCHES?!?!? Damn and I thought my SuperBrawl was big! Though I guess, looking back at it, I had 14 matches not counting the two random squashes for Starrcade. Very easy to do on a 4 hour show, and I'm guessing that's what you're doing. Either way, I look very forward to your Bash, as in historical mods like this it was always looked at as a huge deal, almost JCP's version of Summerslam. That's how I plan to run it in my WCW as well; the Bash kinda fell off the map by a certain point sadly, but I intend to preserve it's lineage, as I'm sure you do also!</p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Championship vs Career: Nick Bockwinkel (w/ ‘Crippler’ Ray Stevens) vs <em>Ric Flair © (w/ Ole Anderson)</em></p><p>

Comments: <em>I'm probably wrong, but I don't see the belt changing hands. Ric Flair IS JCP, and while this is definitely a clash of the legends (much like Flair vs Hogan) I can't go against Naitch.</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Tag Team Championship: <em>The Von Erichs</em> © vs The Fabulous Freebirds</p><p>

Loser Leaves Town: <em>Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler</em> vs The Honky Tonk Man</p><p>

Comments: <em>I already predicted Nick "leaving", Lawler sticking around will give someone for Flair to feud with.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Falls Count Anywhere: <em>Bam Bam Bigelow (w/Precious)</em> vs Kevin Sullivan</p><p>

Comments: <em>While I do see Kevin trying to flaunt Bigelow's "weakness" I don't see it panning out for him. Sullivan is much like Bubba Rogers where he just seems very tough to push.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Hey Ritchardo, i didn't forgot about that thing of the PM. I'm finishing the write-up for my own show in my diary and i'll answer you shortly.

NWA World Championship vs Career: Nick Bockwinkel (w/ ‘Crippler’ Ray Stevens) vs Ric Flair © (w/ Ole Anderson)

Comments: I simply don't see Flair dropping the belt here. Goodbye Nick.

NWA USSR Heavyweight Championship: Hector Guerrero vs Ivan Koloff ©

Comments: As LazerTron is out, Hector has a free path for the gold, and it may become the Mexico Heavyweight Championship after this, no? :p

NWA World Television Championship: Wahoo McDaniel vs Terry Taylor ©

Comments: Mr. Fantastic continues to shine.

NWA World Cruiserweight Championship: (Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger or Shinya Hashimoto) vs Mike Graham

Comments: It doesn't matter who is, Graham is going to lose here. I'm going with Liger because he has the makings of a future star.

NWA World Tag Team Championship: The Von Erichs © vs The Fabulous Freebirds

Comments: I think that The Von Erichs are going to hold the gold a little longer.

NWA US Tag Team Championship: The Fabulous Ones © vs The Memphis Mafia

Comments: The Mafia is going to capture the gold soon in my opinion, but the Fabulous Ones' reign still has legs too.

I Quit Match: ‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes vs ‘Cowboy’ Bob Orton Jr. (w/Ole Anderson)

Comments: Can't see this going the other way.

Loser Leaves Town: Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler vs The Honky Tonk Man

Comments: I agree with Beejus here; Flair vs. Lawler would be a awesome feud, and i can't see Honky going far here after what he did in the WWF.

Falls Count Anywhere: Bam Bam Bigelow (w/Precious) vs Kevin Sullivan

Comments: Bam Bam may be lined up for something big, and so he runs over Big Kev here.

Tommy Rich vs Barry Windham (w/Ole Anderson)

Comments: In every diary that i've read so far, Tommy Rich = JTTS

Lex Luger vs Ron Simmons

Comments: Luger's a future star too, and it's just this.

Junkyard Dog vs Mr. T.

Comments: Usually i would choose the wrestler in a match against a actor/occasional wrestler, but as it is against the declining JYD and The Enemy needs to be kept strong, i choose T here.

The New Breed vs Stan Hansen & Steve Williams

Comments: Stan & Steve as Tag Team Champions would be awesome.

<p>Thanks everyone for the predictions so far! I get a kick out of people enjoying the diary enough to commit their time to predicting and love reading your comments which genuinely do shape my thoughts and longterm booking plans. </p><p> </p><p> One more Showdown before the big event itself... Thought I'd answer a few points just now though.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="Beejus" data-cite="Beejus" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>FOURTEEN MATCHES?!?!? Damn and I thought my SuperBrawl was big! Though I guess, looking back at it, I had 14 matches not counting the two random squashes for Starrcade. Very easy to do on a 4 hour show, and I'm guessing that's what you're doing. Either way, I look very forward to your Bash, as in historical mods like this it was always looked at as a huge deal, almost JCP's version of Summerslam. That's how I plan to run it in my WCW as well; the Bash kinda fell off the map by a certain point sadly, but I intend to preserve it's lineage, as I'm sure you do also!</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Absolutely spot on! The state of the JCP locker room when I started out meant that I had to bring in some positive relationships just to shore up the locker room morale a little bit (Steve Keirn & Kevin Von Erich for example... although both have taken the ball and ran with it) and I suspended my drug testing programme... I've gotten away with it so far but I reckon I'll need to reintroduce it at some point. Morale should take a big upwards boost very shortly and after that I'll phase it back in... so he could be up to his old tricks I've just not been pursuing it... only had one death to worry about so far - and I doubt Bob Caudle's was drug related.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><em>Comments: I haven´t played this particular mod so not sure if Mr. T is active wrestler but I kind of doubt it and thus go with Dog instead.</em></div></blockquote><p><em><em> </em></em></p><p><em><em> No you're right, T is an Occassional Wrestler who is ridiculously poor in the ring. <p>NWA World Championship vs Career: <strong>Nick Bockwinkel</strong> (w/ ‘Crippler’ Ray Stevens) vs Ric Flair © (w/ Ole Anderson)</p><p> Comments:</p><p> if there is a clear winner this time, makes sense for Tricky Nick to score the win and get the one main title he never held. Would only be a minor set back for Flair who can easily get it back later after a couple nice lower card feuds. Instead, Hashimoto tries to ground the high flier with a series of energy sapping technical moves and fans who have grown used to Liger’s quick offence are drawn up in by what looks as if it could be Liger’s first defeat! And wrestling in front of his ‘hometown’ crowd – Nick Bockwinkel looks to turn back the years in advance of tomorrow night’s all or nothing match-up. Terry Taylor and Wahoo McDaniel opened up in this one and the two traded fierce blows without ever backing down – neither man seemed to get the advantage though and we soon found both tagging out to bring in Barry Windham and Tommy Rich – Windham & Rich went just as hard as Taylor & McDaniel did… and they found themselves tagging in Bob Orton Jr & Dusty Rhodes! </p><p> </p><p> The place came unglued as the two heated rivals exchanged thunderous punches in the middle of the ring before, finally Bockwinkel and Flair take their moment in the centre of attention.</p><p> </p><p> The match continues in a similar fashion, neither team backing down or giving an inch. The Crippler unloads on Anderson while the crowd cheers, the distraction is enough, however for Wahoo to escape from Windham's hold and he tags in Tommy Rich as Windham returns to his corner bringing in Taylor. </p><p> </p><p> Flair, Orton, Rhodes and Bockwinkel have gotten involved in the fistfight outside the ring trying to pull the two apart.</p><p> </p><p> Meantwhile Rich runs straight at Taylor who ducks underneath the charge before cracking Rich with a five arm smash from out of nowhere! Windham, arguably the quiet achiever of the Horsemen, has put together a solid run of late and looked to continue things with a prestigious victory over Wildfire. Rich though was pumped up for this and clearly keen to mount a serious challenge for another title shot in the future. Rich took the initiative here, pushing Windham to his limits but seemingly unable to take the final step and hold Windham’s shoulders to the mat for longer than a two count. </p><p> </p><p> Ole Anderson threatened to get involved a few times with referee Teddy Long at one point admonishing a furious Anderson on the ring apron. While Long was tied up, an overly enthusiastic photographer wearing a bandana and dark shades jumped on to the ring apron to get a picture of Rich beating on Windham. Wildfire turned to argue with the photographer and get him to stand down when a funny look came over his face… as he approached closer, almost hypnotised, the look seemed to turn into a dawning comprehension… but it was too late! The photographer clubbed Rich over the head with his camera, busting him open in the process before pulling off his shades to reveal…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/BuzzSawyer.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Buzz Sawyer! This was a more aggressive Hector Guerrero than we’ve been used to seeing. While locked up in his LazerTron outfit he seemed to have lost passion that was clearly on display tonight as were some interesting wrestling trunks – one half the Mexican flag and the other the Stars and Stripes. Both men attempted to make the other suffer with painful submission moves, Koloff returning time and time again to his huge bearhug while Guerrero worked on the lower extremities, at one point locking Koloff in a bizarre move that Jim Ross christened a ‘Mexican Surfboard’. </p><p> </p><p> With a running bulldog, Koloff took control of the match in the late stages and seemed to have another title defence all but sown up as he pounded and kicked on Hector in the same way as he had his brother Chavo a few weeks previously, but Hector refused to give up and each pinfall attempt was met by a resilient kick-out. Finally, an exhausted Koloff bent down to lift Guerrero back up, only to be caught in a lightning quick cradle roll-up… unable to break the momentum, Koloff’s shoulders remained on the canvas for the three count!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner and NEW NWA USSR Champion: Hector Guerrero by pinfall in 9:51</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: C</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/ButcherVachon.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/Tara.jpg</span><p> </p><p> The legendary Butcher Vachon is with Tara now as Lex Luger & Ron Simmons head to the ring.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Vachon: “I don’t know, I don’t know. Both men started this one out with a basic brawling style and it never really progressed and further than that! The strong punches being thrown from both sides don’t let up at all and it’s clear that this has become something very personal between the two. Mr. T.’s absence at ringside is explained as him prepping for his own match with the Junkyard Dog and perhaps it’s this absence that proves to be Ron Simmons’ undoing because he seems to allow Albano to get into his headspace. Stopping from his assault on Luger to shout at the Captain, Lex takes the advantage, clubbing Simmons on the back of the head and scooping him easily up for a powerslam. Austin Idol scored a psychological advantage over Stan Lane with a pinfall victory a few weeks ago and ever since then the Fabulous Ones have come across as a little shaky. Idol looks to start where he left off previously, aggressively taking the match to Stan Lane, an audacious attempt at finishing things early with a DDT, failed and Lane gradually managed to get himself back into the running. The battle of the lightweights of Gilbert & Keirn is fascinating – both are evenly matched for the other and neither team can seem to get an advantage. It was fitting therefore that a team who had recently gotten it together in the ring should lose out as a result of miscommunication. Idol had looked for the hot tag to Gilbert but, Eddie had moved forward too quickly and the clash of heads sent Gilbert down to the ringside floor, a dazed Idol turned only to be hit square in the face with a savate kick Stan Lane.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winners and still NWA US Tag Team Champions: The Fabulous Ones by pinfall in 8:43</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: C</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/MrT.jpg</span><p> </p><p> A video of the havoc brought about by Mr. T. and the Enemy since his arrival in the NWA plays.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: B</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Junkyard Dog (w/Capt. The two men waste little time in exploiting the different rules to this match by taking to the outside and putting the beating on one another! The referee, as if by habit attempts to stop the two men from using the guardrail as a weapon but it’s to no avail – both seem intent on hurting each other and seem to delight in the other’s pain. Both men brawl up the aisleway a few times and tease heading into the back but they always turn around and fight back towards the ring instead.</p><p> </p><p> With Sullivan starting to struggle, things are looking good for Bam Bam as he forces his knee into Sullivan’s throat squashed against the ring steps but he’s left himself exposed and with a quick punch to the nether regions, Bam Bam is doubled over in pain. The self-proclaimed Master of Darkness then stoops to a new low… with Precious edging nearer to check on Bigelow’s health, Sullivan takes his chance and grabs her by the wrist! Pulling her in closer to him he locks her in an inverted sleeper but holds her there rather than puts her to sleep, as she screams for help, Sullivan shouts over at Bigelow to ‘lie down’ or he’ll break her neck. Of course Hayes and Gordy have continually said that they’re not interested in the belts themselves, they’re only really interested because they get to take something that the Von Erichs hold dear. And, to the surprise of no-one, this is nothing more than a legalised brawl! Both teams ignore the referee and his continual warnings for both teams to play inside the rules. The Von Erichs display a meaner and more determined streak than they have in a long time, Kerry showing some signs of the brutal attack on him in the car park the night before. And the Freebirds do their job effectively. They continually focused on Kerry’s head – slapping on headlocks wherever possible – the master of the Iron Claw finding his own cranium vulnerable for a change.</p><p> </p><p> Both teams give as good as they get in this backwards and forwards slow burning battle. In a particularly memorable sequence, Kevin Von Erich flew at Terry Gordy with a flying crossbody but the big man casually caught him and hurled him bodily towards Kerry in the opposite corner! The impact knocked Kerry off the ring apron and left Kevin to fend for himself against his wild opponents. But despite this, The Freebirds couldn’t seem to put him away and the decisive action didn’t happen until Kerry had gotten back into the ring.</p><p> </p><p> Still groggy from his assault the night before and the tumble he’d taken from the apron, Von Erich was a few steps off the pace and with two teams as evenly matched as the Von Erichs and Freebirds, that’s all the difference it needs… As Hayes ran the ropes he made a blind tag to Gordy that only the referee seemed to see, he threw a clothesline but Kerry ducked underneath – Hayes though carried on and threw himself at Kevin like a torpedo who didn’t see it coming and, like his brother before him, he was sent sprawling to the ringside area. Hayes quickly rolled out of the ring and a bemused Kerry didn’t see Gordy stalk up behind him, turning around his reactions were too slow to block the big boot to the gut that doubled him over and before anyone could really comprehend what they were seeing Gordy had lifted Von Erich high up in the air and delivered a devastating Powerbomb!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1….</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2….</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 3….</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winners and NEW NWA World Tag Team Champions: The Fabulous Freebirds by pinfall in 20:30</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: B</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> For a team that didn’t care about winning the NWA World Tag Team Titles, The Freebirds seem to mightily pleased with themselves! Since his arrival back in the NWA, The Honky Tonk Man has been causing mayhem wherever and whenever possible but seems to have met his match in Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler. Lawler starts things off aggressively with a series of jabs, moving quickly around the shellshocked Honky Tonk Man.</p><p> </p><p> Never one to take the moral high ground, Honky Tonk Man was in a fight for his very life and resorted to a rake to the eyes to turn the momentum back in his favour. The pair traded blows for the duration until Honky Tonk Man in apparent disgust gives up! He drops out of the ring and begins to walk into the back while the referee continues counting... the crowd are in rapture but Honky stops, puts his hands on his hips and shakes his head before running back at Lawler in the middle of the ring. With Lawler pounding on Honky in the corner, the referee suddenly gets caught in the crossfire and is knocked over! Lawler instinctively nails Honky Tonk with a piledriver and goes for the pin...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 3...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 4???</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> The referee is still out cold and Lawler does his best to wake him before going for another pinfall... but it’s to no avail, the referee is completely out of it. While Lawler is trying to wake the referee, Honky sneaks up behind him and pulls him down with a schoolboy! Although dazed the referee is able to start the count</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> NO!!!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Lawler kicks out as the referee slumps back down to the canvas. Lawler smashes up the guitar and pops his strap before bending down on top of Honky and delivering a series of jabs to the helpless Honky Tonk’s face! Lawler is on absolute fire as he hits a fist drop and goes for another pinfall...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> NO!!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Honky Tonk Man somehow has enough left in him to kick out! Lawler hopes on to the middle turnbuckle, lines up another fist drop on Honky and makes his dive... but Honky Tonk has rolled out of the way! Quick as a rattlesnake, Honky hits Lawler in the head with a knee before pulling Lawler into a piledriver of his own! Honky rolls on top of Lawler and the referee starts to count again...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2... Finally Blackwell, Hennig and Vachon reach over the guardrail and between them pull off the absolutely wild Gagne while Williams helps his partner to his feet. </p><p> </p><p> Hansen looks absolutely mortified and over Tara’s microphone can be heard shouting expletives, Williams talks angrily to one of the road agents who have come out to see what’s going on. Without another word Williams turns the still shellshocked Hansen towards around and shepherds him back down the aisle towards the dressing room. Giving up a fair difference in bulk to the Native American, Taylor is on the back foot from the very beginning as Wahoo takes the match to his younger opponent with some vicious chops, winding Taylor in the process, Wahoo bounces the ropes and looks for a Tomahawk Chop to seal would be a sensational early victory only for Taylor to drop to the floor and take a rest on the outside along with the advice of Ole Anderson.</p><p> </p><p> Coming back into the bout, Taylor slowly began to let his stamina and youthful energy dictate the flow of the match, delightfully countering Wahoo’s attempts at energy sapping and rolling with the big meaty punches being thrown, catching Wahoo’s arm and spinning him into a modified short clothesline, Taylor catches Wahoo clean on the forehead with a five arm smash and it’s enough to knock the wind from his sails as Taylor makes the cover for the 1-2-3 and another successful title defence. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner and still NWA World Television Champion: Terry Taylor by pinfall in 16:32</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: C+</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/NickBockwinkel.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/RayStevens.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/DavidCrockett.jpg</span><p> </p><p> Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens are standing by with David Crockett:</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Bockwinkel: “How many times have we been here Ray? They’ve battled and they’ve bled and now it’s come down to this – one man, one of these extremely proud men will have to tell the crowd that they quit for the other... This might not be a classic but it’s a match that won’t be forgotten any time soon...</p><p> </p><p> Starting slowly these two built up a head of steam as they attempted to wear each other down before trying to make the other quit. Orton made an early attempt with an arm bar but few took the risk seriously, referee Teddy Long not even bothering to go for the house microphone. Rhodes for his part seemed more intent on getting payback for the first blood defeat last month... and he does just that almost twenty minutes when he smashes Orton with the ring bell! Long gives Rhodes a stern talking to but ultimately there’s nothing he can do about it... it’s not about bleeding though, it’s about quitting and Rhodes gets back to working on Orton’s neck with a couple of well placed elbows.</p><p> </p><p> Despite this, it’s Orton who gets the first real chance to finish the match with a figure four slap bang in the middle of the ring! As Jim Ross points out, it’s not fully locked on though and while effective, it’s not as deadly as it could be, the lack of pressure means that Rhodes can turn the hold over and ultimately break the dangerous lock after screaming “Nooooooooo!” into the microphone, the pair get up and Rhodes, with a severely weakened leg ducks under an Orton clothesline and catches Orton in a headlock, using his full weight, Rhodes drives Orton’s head into the mat before quickly climbing on to his back and locking him in a camel clutch!</p><p> </p><p> Rhodes has the move locked on and Ole Anderson is in the ring! He tries to pull Rhodes off but he refuses to break the hold! Anderson is pulling Rhodes by the head but Orton’s is at risk of being ripped off... as Teddy Long asks the question again, Bob Orton can’t hold out any more... </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> “I QUIT!!!!”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner: Dusty Rhodes by submission in 29:42</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: B</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="36731" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/RicFlair.jpg</span><p> </p><p> It’s time for our main event... and out comes the Champion to the strains of <em>'Also sprach Zarathustra'</em> and a cacophony of boos... As Earl Hebner lifts the title belt high in the air for the crowd to see, Flair and Bockwinkel begin trash talking to each other and the excitement continues to build… the bell rings and… Flair drops down and out of the ring? The crowd boo at the stalling tactic as Flair attempts to get inside Bockwinkel’s head. The referee starts his 10 count and Bockwinkel steps back to allow Flair back into the ring. The extra half minute of preparation clearly helps Flair as from the second he re-enters the ring, he flies at Bockwinkel, unleashing a series of punches and grabbing a headlock. Bockwinkel pushes him off and sends Flair running to the ropes, cutting him down with a huge chop that sends the crowd wild.</p><p> </p><p> The two continue trading holds and punches as counter turns into counter and chop is replied for by chop, both men give absolutely everything in a stellar bout and one of the best singles matches in recent NWA history. The crowd are willing Bockwinkel to win, and so is Ray Stevens on the outside – he regularly slaps the ring apron to encourage his tag team partner of so many years and his presence is enough to make Ole Anderson look especially shifty. Ole keeps looking up at the entrance way, perhaps willing the Four Horsemen to come to Flair’s aid… no helps come though and this match is settled in it’s entirety by the men in the ringside area.</p><p> </p><p> With 30 minutes of this exhausting and bruising battle gone, Nick Bockwinkel has found himself escaping from the figure four twice already thanks to Flair’s locking it on too close to the ropes. An attempted pinfall from Flair has also been broken by Bockwinkel’s sheer determination. Nick Bockwinkel wears a mask of blood, cut open from the blows being delivered by the Champion, the crowd know that a miracle is needed if this one is going to be turned around. Flair is clearly still the fresher man but looks perplexed as to how he can put Bockwinkel away. </p><p> </p><p> With Nick in the corner and being attended to by the referee who wants to check if he can still go on, Ole Anderson throws a set of brass knuckles to Flair who catches them instinctively… Flair looks down at his hands and then over at Bockwinkel. With a look of incredulity on his face, Flair then turns back to Ole and can be heard asking him what’s the matter with him and whether he has respect for anybody. He throws the brass knuckles back at Ole and turns around to continue fighting Bockwinkel… but he hadn’t noticed Nick coming out of the corner! With a lightning fast drop toe hold, Flair has hit the canvas and Bockwinkel is all over the top of him, Tucking Flair’s right calf between his arm, and placing a knee into the small of the back, Bockwinkel racks up the Champion who screams in agony… the referee asks if he wants to give up and a defiant “Nooooo!!” can be heard throughout the arena… </p><p> </p><p> Ole Anderson can’t take any more of this and jumps on to the apron… only to be pulled off by Crippler Ray Stevens! The pair duke it out on the outside as Flair continues to struggle. Stevens has Anderson down and locked in a knee lock of his own!!</p><p> </p><p> The crowd are on their feet, they can feel Flair’s submission coming… The referee drops down and asks Flair again…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> “NOOOOOOO!”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Bockwinkel sinks the move in deeper eliciting another agonised scream…. Again Earl Hebner asks Ric Flair the question….</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> “NOOOOOOO!”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Bockwinkel releases the hold at the same time that Stevens lets go of Anderson. He grabs Flair by the head and pulls him in, looking for a piledriver… CONNECTS!</p><p> </p><p> The crowd are still on their feet as Bockwinkel goes for the pinfall</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> NO! </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Flair got a shoulder up! It’s Bockwinkel’s turn to be in disbelief now!!! He goes to ask Ray Stevens for advice and after a prolonged talk, as he turns back around, Flair catches him in a schoolboy roll-up!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 1….</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> 2….</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> NO!!!</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Another near fall as Bockwinkel rolls out of the hold but Flair still has a grip on Bockwinkel’s leg, quickly turning him on to his back in the middle of the ring, Flair throws on the Figure Four and drops to his back as it’s Bockwinkel’s turn to scream in agony. With the pressure placed on the leg earlier, every moment the move is on is causing Bockwinkel incredible amounts of pain. The referee asks Bockwinkel if he wants to give up…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> “NEVER!!!”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> But as brave as those words are there’s just no way out… Flair continues to keep the hold locked in, wanting to get the job done…. Bockwinkel screams again but still refuses to quit…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> When it happens, it seems to do so in slow motion… as the crowd slowly realise what it means, the roar of excitement turns to near silence, so much so that when the towel being carried by a devastated Ray Stevens finally hits the mat, you could almost hear a pin drop… until the ring bell clangs throughout the arena and the horrible truth becomes a reality…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Winner and still NWA World Heavyweight Champion: Ric Flair by Corner Submission in 35:50</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: B</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Ray Stevens has rushed into the ring and Flair automatically had released the hold as soon as the bell rang. Bockwinkel is lying on his back, exhausted and in agony. Stevens drops down to check on his friend, wiping the blood away from his face and apologising over and over again…</p><p> </p><p> Flair just stands back looking on… Stevens tries to help Bockwinkel up but is struggling… Bockwinkel shoves him off and stands up under his own steam… as he stands there with blood through his blonde hair in an inconic image, he embraces his old friend Stevens! The crowd go wild as the two salute the crowd, Bockwinkel can be heard reassuring the Crippler that he understands… </p><p> </p><p> Still Ric Flair looks on, Ole goes to pull Flair away but Flair brushes him off and instead walks over to Bockwinkel, giving him a gentle nudge on the shoulder, Stevens spins round and looks ready to fight but Flair has his hands up in a non-threatening gesture – we can’t hear what’s being said but Bockwinkel is listening intently with a suspicious look on his face… </p><p> </p><p> Flair looks to turn away but has a change of heart, he turns back towards the pair and… sticks out his hand! Bockwinkel isn’t sure how to react and looks to the crowd for advice – they’re not too sure either! With a sideways look at Stevens as if telling him to be ready if something goes wrong… Bockwinkel takes Flair’s hand and…. </p><p> </p><p> They shake!!!</p><p> </p><p> Flair pulls Bockwinkel into him and embraces him before raising his hand to the crowd. The Kemper Arena is in rapture as two of the greatest World Champions of all time stand in tribute to the crowd! Ray Stevens joins them and has his hand raised too! Ole Anderson, meanwhile, has an expression of almost untamed fury…</p><p> </p><p> Flair and Bockwinkel are smiling and chatting to each other when….</p><p> </p><p> The sound of hooves fills the arena?! The crowd turn to the entranceway expecting to see Barry Windham, Bob Orton & Terry Taylor make their returns… but they’re wrong… because stepping out of the curtain come two very familiar old faces… one of whom is wearing a golden belt…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/TullyBlanchard.jpg</span><span>http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac17/Ritchardo_1979/JCP%20Diary%2088/ArnAnderson.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> The pair look on, shaking their heads in apparent disgust as the show comes to a close with a bemused Ric Flair and Nick Bockwinkel in the centre of the ring.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Grade: B-</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">Overall Show Grade: B</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> --</p><p> </p><p> Well that’s the Great American Bash in the books! I hope you enjoyed the show as much as I did writing it up, sorry for the delay in getting this posted – there were one or two technical difficulties (to put it mildly) but we got there in the end!</p><p> </p><p> There’ll be some news stories up to explain things in a gameworld context but the headline, if you’ve not worked it out already, is that JCP bought over the AWA last month! Since then, I’ve had Arn, Tully, Jimmy Snuka, Buzz Sawyer and a few other guys on holiday until I was ready to bring them in for this show.</p><p> </p><p> Dick Murdoch, Wahoo McDaniel, Jerry Lawler & Cocoa Samoa were all picked up as part of the AWA buyout as well, but I brought them in earlier because they weren’t automatically associated with the AWA.</p><p> </p><p> Oh, and Nick Bockwinkel had signalled his intention to retire in three months just before the Crockett Cup, hence why he’s hung his boots now. </p><p> </p><p> Everything else will be explained in a little more detail in my news announcements…</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> To the Prediction Contest then and the scores on the doors (out of a possible 13)…</p><p> </p><p> Smasher1311 – 10</p><p> </p><p> Guyver3 – 9</p><p> Beejus – 9</p><p> TheBooker – 9</p><p> </p><p> Franticloser – 8</p><p> Steen BTW – 8</p><p> Pyroman – 8</p><p> Danish Superhero – 8</p><p> </p><p> Zergon – 7</p><p> Hashasheen – 7</p><p> Olympia – 7</p><p> </p><p> The Final Countdown – 6 (out of 11)</p><p> </p><p> How does that impact on the Leaderboard for the final month of the Contest? Well despite shipping a few points to some of his top table rivals, <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Zergon</span></strong> does enough to hold on to the lead and take the prize – PM on its way with details of the prize… next competition starts at my next PPV… the Bunkhouse Stampede in August, runs through Fall Brawl in September and Lethal Lottery in October until the granddaddy of them all – Starrcade ’88 in November. Thanks to my new contestants for voting and to everyone who took the time to read these shows.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Standings in Prediction Contest after 4 shows:</p><p> </p><p> Zergon: 37</p><p> </p><p> Danish Superhero: 34</p><p> Beejus: 34</p><p> Guyver3: 34</p><p> </p><p> Pyroman: 32</p><p> </p><p> Franticloser: 30</p><p> </p><p> The Final Countdown: 28</p><p> </p><p> Smwilliams: 23</p><p> </p><p> Smasher1311: 16</p><p> </p><p> Cyclops: 15</p><p> </p><p> Coop: 9</p><p> Destiny: 9</p><p> TheBooker: 9</p><p> </p><p> Steen BTW: 8</p><p> </p><p> Olympia: 7</p><p> </p><p> BHK 1978: 6</p><p> </p><p> Chuck: 4</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Up next an interview with Ole Anderson conducted before the Great American Bash... and a look at the NWA in July 1988 and all the news that’s fit to print - thanks for taking the time to read!</p>
