Eight Man Tag Team Match

Captain New Japan, Ryusuke Taguchi, Yohei Komatsu & Sho Tanaka vs. Suzuki-gun (Davey Boy Smith Jr., El Desperado, TAKA Michinoku & Taichi)

Comments: Can't see any reason to job Suzuki-Gun here.

New Japan Cup First Round

Shelton X Benjamin vs. Bad Luck Fale

Comments: The underboss of the Bullet Club means more than Benjamin.

New Japan Cup First Round

Kota Ibushi vs. Yujiro Takahashi

Comments: Kota is one of three or four young talent you can build around.

New Japan Cup First Round

Tetsuya Naito vs. Doc Gallows

Comments: I like Gallows but BC can't win all their matches and, unlike Fale, Gallows is up against someone near the top of the card.

New Japan Cup First Round

YOSHI-HASHI vs. Karl Anderson

Comments: The leader of the BC has to win in the first round!

New Japan Cup First Round

Tomoaki Honma vs. Kazushi Sakuraba

Comments: Honma's over even when he loses, though Sakuraba is also a star in Japan. I was leaning towards Honma getting the win because I see Shibata winning the cup; with Fale going over Benjamin I'd pick him to beat Honma then lose to Shibata.

Six Man Tag Team Match

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Time Splitters vs. CHAOS (Kazuchika Okada, Gedo & Jado)

Comments: Okada is the future of the promotion, and I'd pick The World Class Tag Team over the Time Splitters.

New Japan Cup First Round

Togi Makabe vs. Toru Yano

Comments: Magabe/Nagata in the next round.

New Japan Cup First Round

Satoshi Kojima vs. Katsuyori Shibata

Comments: If you're sticking somewhat close to real life New Japan then Okada should be the young guy to build around, but keeping Shibata strong still leaves you with a possible NEVER or IC contender.

New Japan Cup First Round

Yuji Nagata vs. Hirooki Goto

Comments: After Nagata's showings against CHAOS I think a strong New Japan Cup showing isn't out of the question.

The New Japan Army fight with their hearts on their sleeves but they are just no match for the respective strength, cunning, experience and athleticism of their opponents. Neither Taguchi or the Captain can put in a solo display to win the match and although the young lions put on a strong display in the earlygoing, they too are bought crashing back to reality. TAKA drives Komatsu into the mat back first with a Michinoku Driver II and picks up a routine victory for Suzuki's army.

New Japan Cup First Round

Shelton X Benjamin vs. Bad Luck Fale

http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/NewRoster/shelton.jpghttp://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/njcvs.jpghttp://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/NewRoster/fale.jpg

Ranallo recalls to last year when this match took place in the semi-finals, it was a shock to see both get that far and he wonders if the same could happen this year. He also notes that 'The Underboss' clearly sees this tournament as the perfect way to get back on track after defeat to Tetsuya Naito and he gets the best start as he asserts his size and power advantage to take control. Benjamin lands a flush Superkick, but still can't topple the big man. He attempts a Paydirt, but Fale blocks it, leaving gravity to bring Shelton crashing to the canvas. Benjamin eventually takes Fale over with a T-Bone Suplex, an impressive feat of strength but the big man kicks out of the proceeding pinfall at 2. Fale keeps stunting Shelton's momentum en route to picking up the victory with the devastating Bad Luck Fall.

New Japan Cup First Round

Kota Ibushi vs. Yujiro Takahashi

http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/NewRoster/kotaibushi.jpghttp://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/njcvs.jpghttp://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/NewRoster/yujiro.jpg

The story throughout this match appears to be just how distracted Ibushi seems to be, leading Foley to think that maybe he isn't 100% focused on Yujiro after his confrontation with Tanahashi. The Bullet Club's only native Japanese member uses his power advantage to keep Ibushi on the canvas, figuring that if he can't move around the ring, he simply can't get any momentum going. However, once the 'Golden Star' rallies back, there's very little that Takahashi can do to stop him. Ibushi is far too quick and far too skilled and he advances to the quarter finals after a Phoenix Splash.

This match follows a similar narrative to the first New Japan Cup contest we saw tonight, except that Gallows is a little more mobile than Fale. Yokohama don't exactly give Naito the warmest welcome, but their support in the latter stages certainly energized him enough so as to pick up a relatively straight-forward submission victory courtesy of the Koji Clutch.

The final of four straight Bullet Club participants, 'Machine Gun' has years of experience over his opponent here. Young YOSHI-HASHI might be hungry for a breakout moment but this match was only ever going one way. Anderson takes this challenge very seriously and YOSHI-HASHI resorts to a desperate Running Powerbomb attempt that the Bullet Club's leader is wise to. He slips out and drops his opponent on his face with the Gun Stun for the win.

If there was ever a clash of styles in a wrestling match, here it is. Honma is aggressive from the start, he wants to make sure Sakuraba doesn't lock him in a deadly submission so he throws a lot of early strikes and stays near the ropes so he can force quick breaks. Sakuraba knows that Honma's offence is high impact and destructive, so he tries to ground the Underdog. This makes for an interesting back and forth contest that comes to an end after Honma hits a Blue Thunder Driver and finishes Sakuraba off with a Diving Kokeshi.

We take perhaps a welcome break from singles action for this match. Tanahashi is greeted with adulation and takes a lifetime to actually enter the ring and join his teammates. Okada laughs off this OTT entrance in the corner, not that he's one to talk. Those two heavyweights don't ever really face off though, that's a match for another day. CHAOS take their opportunity to isolate Alex Shelley, probably the weak link of his team. Shelley has been in this position many times before though and once again he manages to slip his opponent's grasp to make hot tags to both Tanahashi and KUSHIDA. They keep getting shut down by the veteran team of Gedo & Jado though. Tanahashi runs wild once more, but Okada takes him out with a Flapjack, followed by Heavy Rain. The World Class Tag Team keep watch, 'The Rainmaker' takes out Shelley with his signature Rainmaker Lariat and CHAOS pick up a victory I guess you could call an upset.

The greatest wrestler in the world, Toru Yano, runs away from his opponent at the start. He enters the ring as Makabe leaves and then runs to the opposite side as Makabe gives chase. Yano unties the corner turnbuckle pad as referee Marty Asami calms Makabe down, but the 'Unchained King Kong' reverses Yano's attempt to whip him into the corner! Yano crashes back first into the exposed steel and winces in pain, but dodges Makabe's corner splash! The impact stuns Togi enough that Yano can roll him up with the O'Connor Roll and pull the tights for the victory! YTR legs it up the ramp, making sure to grab his DVD on the way out as he points, laughs and taunts the man that is supposed to be Nakamura's next big challenger.

The vibe around the arena was noticely more active after the introductions of these two warriors. This fight starts with a forearm exchange in the middle of the ring, but soon becomes a test of endurance - Kojima's knife edge chops versus Shibata's hard chest kicks. It's Kojima that comes out on top, but Shibata decks him with a Big Boot. Shibata grinds Kojima down in the corner and telegraphs his signature Basement Dropkick, but Kojima charges out to the opposite corner and delivers a Running Elbow Smash! He puts Shibata down with a Backdrop for the first near fall of the match - barely even a one count! Kojima slows the pace a little, but it's not belong before the resume that frantic pace. Shibata hits his Fireman's Carry Neckbreaker and goes for the PK, but Kojima catches his leg and holds onto it to deliver a stiff short-arm Lariat that knocks Shibata silly. Knowing that that probably still wasn't enough for the victory, Kojima delivers his signature Cozy Lariat and upsets all the Shibata marks.

Our final match of the evening is easily the biggest and thus, it also happens to be the longest match of the evening. Nagata nullifies Goto's striking game early on with quick takedowns, focusing his attack on Goto's right arm with a variety of different armlocks. Goto fights back, but is relegated to just his kicks and Nagata once again finds it easy to ground his opponent. As the IWGP Tag Team Champion mounts another comeback, he winces with each forearm strike but finally finds seperation from the 'Anti-Aging Star' with a Discus Lariat. We go back and forth with pinfalls: Goto covers his opponent after a Fireman's Carry Neckbreaker, but only gets a 2. As Nagata sits up, Goto goes for a PK, but Nagata catches his leg just like Kojima. He stands holding Goto's boot, only to drop it and take him down by his right arm instead, locking on a Fujiwara Armbar! Nagata goes all white eyes, but Goto manages to block out the pain long enough to reach the ropes. Goto grits his teeth as he fires back with more forearm strikes, but eventually the pain is too much and Nagata's signature Backdrop puts him down for the three.

I'm one of those Shibata marks - liked him years ago when he was pegged as one of the future aces of NJPW before he quit, but I became a massive fan during his MMA jobber days - but I'm happy with a Kojima win. Koji was one of my favourites during Mutoh's All Japan '02-07 run.

A pretty close group of scores, I'll be honest and say that I would have gotten several wrong here myself, but I threw some upsets in there to spice things up.

Match Of The Night went to Ibushi vs. Takahashi, scoring an 81. Pretty much all the B matches were in and around 79 to 81, even Fale vs. Benjamin! So, a great night of wrestling all round.

Fun Fact: Not a single person predicted Toru Yano to beat Togi Makabe. :D

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Now I hate Kojima with a passion.

I knew you would, *evil smile* :D

Great show. Only one match out of the "B" category, which is nice.

Glad you enjoyed it Blody. :) The show came out really well but I was slightly disappointed that the main event wasn't higher than a B. Despite a good show, I ended up losing popularity in Japan. >_>

Honma wins already? Mai goodness!

I wonder if anybody will back him against Fale.

Makabe NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Yano you bastard. Oh well my boy Ibushi continues on. And Fale going this far is awesome!

Oh god it made me laugh when I checked the predictions and saw everybody backing Makabe. I think you guys should have seen it coming when he got put against Yano. :p

I'm a big fan too, this was just one of those situations where Nagata and Kojima going over made more sense. If anything, it just opens the doors to more potential tag contenders, something those titles desperately need.

Regarding Kojima, it's scary that he can still really go these days, he hasn't really lost a step over the years. I'm not overly familiar with his All Japan work, but I know that he was booked super strong when they did those All Together shows and they gave him the IWGP and the Triple Crown so that kind of speaks for itself really, haha.

Regarding NJPW buying into NOAH, how is that reflected in the database? Because you still have Suzukigun here, whereas IRL is of course different.

Short answer: it kind of isn't, but only because signing my guys to PPA deals and letting NOAH use them just isn't financially viable with all my tour shows. I've considered setting up an alliance and loaning some of my guys out, but I'm too scared of what will happen when they decide to borrow Nakamura for a show or something... That and I don't have a bloody clue what NOAH are doing. They just keep releasing people, it makes no sense haha. But in answer to your question: my plan is to simulate it as best as possible by booking some NOAH guys.

New Japan Cup Day Two Predictions

Six Man Tag Team Match

Ryusuke Taguchi, BUSHI & Sho Tanaka vs. Time Splitters & Mascara Dorada

Comments: Admittedly not wholly familiar with NJPW beyond starting with the recent G1 Climax. I know Dorada and the Time Splitters a bit more than their 3 opponents so I'll give them the nod.

Six Man Tag Team Match

CHAOS (Rocky Romero, Gedo & Jado) vs. Suzuki-gun (TAKA Michinoku, Taichi & El Desperado)

Comments: The two NJPW 'legends' and Romero over Suzuki-Gun. Again mostly going off who I know more.

Six Man Tag Team Match

Togi Makabe, Captain New Japan & Takaaki Watanabe vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Manabu Nakanishi & Yohei Komatsu

Comments: I know of Makabe, Tenzan, Capt. New Japan. Hate all three of them, I'll give Makabe's crew the nod though.

Six Man Tag Team Match

Kazushi Sakuraba & Meiyu Tag (Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto) vs. Suzuki-gun (Shelton X Benjamin & Killer Elite Squad)

Comments: Know everyone beyond Sakuraba, a team of Shibata/Goto is surely unbeatable, right?

Six Man Tag Team Match

CHAOS (Shinsuke Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada & YOSHI-HASHI) vs. Bullet Club (Doc Gallows, Yujiro Takahashi & Tama Tonga)

Comments: Ugh. I hate Bullet Club. Don't let them win lol

New Japan Cup Quarter Final

Tomoaki Honma vs. Bad Luck Fale

Comments: If Honma won the last round, it would be way too awesome if he went to the finals.

New Japan Cup Quarter Final

Toru Yano vs. Karl Anderson

Comments: Because I'd rather see Yano's antics than an Anderson match.

New Japan Cup Quarter Final

Tetsuya Naito vs. Yuji Nagata

Comments: You've already eliminated one of my favorites in Goto, don't let Nagata do in another. Of course that depends on if Naito's running the Los Ingorbenable gimmick.

New Japan Cup Quarter Final

Kota Ibushi vs. Satoshi Kojima

Comments: Because Kojima bores the shit out of me.

Looking forward to reading the show~
