Matt's Mods

Recommended Posts

Just because I like the idea of taking a mod from the 80's and simming forward a few years, I got to 1989 and found some of the turn of events really fascinating and figured I could share them here:

 • The WWF have signed up Bob Backlund, Jake Roberts, Jerry Lawler, Magnum TA, Michael Hayes, Nikita Koloff, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Scott Hall, Stan Hansen, Terry Funk, Ted DiBiase, Rick Martel, Tommy Rich and Tully Blanchard
 • The WrestleMania I main event saw Big John Studd and Bob Orton defeat Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan, the following year Hulk Hogan successfully defended his WWF title against Studd, WrestleMania III had WWF champion Roddy Piper defend his title against Ric Flair and win by DQ and the following year, Ric Flair, WWF champion headlined the Showcase of the Immortals against Magnum T.A.
 • Crockett's roster is interesting as well having added Andre the Giant, Arn Anderson, Bobby Heenan, Carlos Colon, Curt Hennig, Cyndi Lauper, Honky Tonk Man, Kerry and Kevin Von Erich, Larry Zbyszko, Sting, Terry Gordy, The Butcher, Tito Santana and the Road Warriors
 • Ric Flair lost the NWA World title to Seiji Sakaguchi at NJPW's Fight For Respect in March of 1985 and he went on to hold it for just over a year before losing it to Joint Promotion's Skull Murphy on World of Sport and he is still the champion in January 1989.

I think this is an issue with the Alliance titles. There is no way someone like Skull Murphy (whoever he actually is) would ever hold the NWA championship. Obviously there is no way to prevent this because as the Flair/Sakaguchi match happened in Japan, Flair was the underdog and the same for the Sakaguchi/Murphy match. The only thing I can think to prevent something like this is to make the NWA and USA exclusive? I know it's not true to life, but the realism in terms of likely champions would probably outweigh this? The other suggestion would be to make the NWA title the property of JCP as Crockett had complete creative control over it by this point didn't he?

Just wanted to offer some feedback :)

Bret and Shawn are probably the most interesting "rivalry" you can find, because they are both guys who didn't get over based on star quality at all. Yes, both were stars, but neither got there via anything like that. Both were charismatic in their own ways, with Shawn edging Bret out in mic skills. But at the same time, and this is what gets them over, is that Bret edges Shawn out in in-ring psychology and the technical skills while Shawn has far superior aerial and flashiness skill. So both are great in-ring, while not having the star quality that others would display.

I would say Hall should have better star quality than either of them, however his in-ring skills wouldn't be as good, and he would have some increasingly bad drug problems the further into his career the mod is set. Meanwhile a Kevin Nash would have the best star quality of them all, as well as the best menace - however the worst in-ring stats.

That's pretty much my point. Although with hall the star quality shouldn't be too high because he got over due to his entertainment skills rather than his star quality I believe

Star Quality IS NOT being a star.

Star Quality is the look of being a star and nothing else. When you just look at someone on the screen before they do anything or in the street and think, wow! look at them. Scott Hall oozed it. B+/A territory. HBK above average at best. Hell, even Ryback is streets ahead of HBK in Star Quality. Popularity has nothing to do with it. HBK succeeded despite lacking in Star Quality, and to a greater degree Mick Foley.

That's what I have such a hard time with. For some reason, I have it burned into my mind that star quality is required to be a star, but it's not. I have to convince myself that giving Foley and Michaels a C/C+ is perfectly reasonable, because it seems crazy to me lol.

I'd actually go as low as the E range for Foley, by all accounts he looks like a homeless guy. But the game would cap him far too low (I think?), so maybe D/D+.

But yet foley can play cactus jack, dude love and 2 versions of mankind? He was meant to look like a homeless guy, that was his character. You need to realise that just 'looks' are people's gimmick. Mick foley had a certain degree of star quality, to give him a D would be ridiculous. He could have easily changed his 'gimmick' and looked like a 'star' and played it well as he was great entertainment skill wise.

One of the biggest moments of Monday night wars was him winning the title

You could dress Mick Foley in the Pope's gown, he still wouldn't look a star.

You are right about his moment being instrumental, but what that has to do with Star Quality I don't know...

Because one of the biggest moments in the history of wrestling, the person that won the title surely must have been higher than a D in star quality, because Mick foley didn't have very good in ring skills, apart from possibly hardcore and to a certain extent brawling skills, and didn't have brilliant ebtertainment skills (although he did, he hadn't really had much mic time etc to this point) so what elevated him to the point of him winning the title being one of the major points in history? Apart from him also talking part in one of the highest rated segments of all time?

The scruffiness of his look was part of his character.

I think people think because it took foley a long time to get over he had no star quality, but he was never given the push in the right company, and when he eventually was, he made it. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't put him higher than hall, Nash, bret or HBK, but I certainly don't think hall should have A and foley have D, when foley was at the top at a time WWF was, and hall was at the top off WWF at a bad period, and was at top of WCW when they lost the battle.

Don't get me wrong I like radon Ramon and the NWO, but the majority of the Popularity was WCW taking WWF wrestlers.

I appreciate the feedback and all that, but if we could please keep the thread to discussion about the mods themselves and how to make them better, I would appreciate it.

I was actually coming here to post something similar.

I don't mind people gathering together and trying to strategize how to improve the mods. I just don't want the thread getting derailed.

Fair enough, I don't generally care too much how mods are done etc, especially with minor things like star quality because I (aswell as anyone else) can edit it easy to suit my/our liking. I just put my two Penneth in from what I've seen of how the game works.

I just hope things such as broadcasters and things like that are done well because I wouldn't have a clue lol.

One thing I do want to say, is I found majority of mods were overpowered in tew13, and I converted the 91 mod, (which I found to be less overpowered, and it does seem easier to gain pop as well as performance skill. So for anyone making mods, I would suggest toning down worker skills.

I think they look great, but I understand why you'd prefer plain logos.

Thanks for understanding that despite your opposite POV.

Just FYI there are alternates for the each of those

Yep, but also, if those companies are going to pass through the 90's or the 2000's, i doubt they're going to have those logos forever.

Now, changing subject, my plans for 1985 and 1993...

1985: Play as JCP and try to cripple down the WWF or playing WWF and go the historical way, with a few exceptions, like bringing Kerry Von Erich and turn him into a East German symphatizer and pair him with the Iron Sheik.

1993: Play as WWF and make a WWF Television Title, and push several young people, releasing Hulk Hogan and give 'em good action still with cartoonish gimmicks or play as ECW, remain in the NWA, absorb SMW, make a brand split (or in this case, a territory split), so i can present them as a pro-wrestling companies, but with a more profane vocabulary and violence at it's purest form.

Any major logo changes can be preset via the narrative system to change the logo automatically at a certain date.

Not sure if this part got missed but I'm just wondering your thoughts on it?

And for those who want the NWA to have it, they can change it in the editor.

Thanks for that, just thought it might have gotten mixed up in the other discussion going on.

I'm going to sim a few years tomorrow with the NWA being set purely to USA and see what that does and I'll post my feedback so that can help you with your decision

So I'm running a watcher game, currently in 1991. I'm concerned that the WWF is getting too big.

8 ME all 84+ USA and Canada. That's fine, I guess.

8 UMC all 75+ USA, including 4 in the 80s

12 MC, all 70+ USA, 60+ Canada

That leaves Ricky Steamboat, Stan Hansen, and Tito Santana (65+) at LMC; Bob Backlund, Nikita Koloff, Terry Funk, and Terry Gordy (Nikita's the lowest at 55) as Openers!

The scariest part, though, is their enhancement talent.

"Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, who is 68+ in Japan, 38+ in USA, and 71 in the Great Lakes.

And... I don't even know how...

"The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase. Between USA, Canada, and Japan, his lowest pop is 60.

Fun Fact: After dying in an accident in December 1990, 27 year old El Hijo del Santo was named Wrestler of the Year. That made me happy.
