</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> A Television Championship bout opens the show, with Mike Tenay noting that Steve Corino has still been defending the title weekly on WCW Worldwide during the Top Contender’s Tournament. Though Knoble gets in some pitbull-like offense, the match is largely an exhibition bout to showcase Corino and his trademark spots — he finishes off Knoble with the Old School Expulsion for an emphatic win.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

DDP is still frustrated that Raven snuck a win over him by grabbing the tights, and advises Kanyon not to fall for the same tricks at Mayhem. “Don’t worry Page, I -know- Raven,” Kanyon assures him, “and I’ll get payback on Sunday for both of us.”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Booker T’s series on historical Starrcade main-events continues. “Starrcade ’93 was the tenth anniversary, and the stakes were higher than ever, dog! Big Van Vader’s WCW World Heavyweight Championship! Ric Flair’s career! Something had to give!” We see footage of the turning points of the match, including Vader crushing Flair on the guard-rail with a press-slam, and Vader missing a colossal moonsault. In the end, Flair comes out victorious, holding the championship high.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Storm has learnt from his match against Clark two weeks ago, and wastes no time in trying to bring Adams to the ground and twist him like a pretzel. The big man is able to power out with huge elbows however, and regains a vertical base. Storm is tossed around like a ragdoll yet as Adams signals for the clothesline, he’s distracted by Mike Awesome grabbing his WCW World Tag Team Championship. “YOU’RE NOT THE CHAMP, YEAH,” Adams exclaims in fury, as Storm capitalises on the opportunity by cradling him just long enough to secure the pin.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Adams resumes laying a beating on Storm after the bell rings, as Awesome rolls into the ring clutching the championship belt and ready to strike. A pumped-up Bryan Clark is quick to jog to the ring to assist his partner, and Awesome thinks better of it, picking Storm off the ground and making a hasty retreat. “THIS AIN’T OVER, YEAH,” KroniK yell.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Mike Sanders joins us on commentary, where he’s asked Jindrak’s strategy tonight: “Strategy? You think a force of nature, a silverback gorilla like Big Mark strategises in the back? With flow-charts, post-it notes? No, monkey see, monkey do, monkey beat ass.” True to form, Jindrak opens the match with aggressive brawling offense, though the wily veteran Morrus forces a break against the ropes. The two exchange huge power moves, but in the end it’s Morrus moonsaulting from the top and securing a victory. Sanders is furious on commentary: “Son of a bitch!”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Chuck Palumbo is slumped in the locker-room, clearly in a bad mood. He’s joined by Sean O’Haire, who asks him how he’s doing. “I’m out of the tournament, out of the Starrcade main-event, and out of luck. Maybe I -am- the weak link,” Palumbo sighs. O’Haire pats him on the back: “-We’re- still in this thing, the Natural Born Thrillers are still in this thing. I’m gonna win that tournament — not for me, but for us.” Palumbo looks uncertain but seems to appreciate the sentiment.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The Radicalz are backstage, hyping up Malenko as Guerrero shimmies back and forth with energy, Saturn trash-talks and Chavo bounces up and down. Malenko nods with a look of icy determination, as he strides off to do battle, Eddy screaming after him: “You kick his ass, esse! You’re a -winner-!”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The crowd are electric for this bout, as the mix of Malenko’s technical style and O’Haire’s powerhouse offense makes for a match of constantly shifting tone and momentum. O’Haire dominates in the early going, with Malenko taking over and trying to wear Sean down with submission attempts — though O’Haire is able to power out each time. Malenko eventually resorts to removing the top turnbuckle pad, aiming to Irish whip O’Haire into it — but the whip is reversed and Malenko takes the bump headfirst himself! He turns around and is hit by a superkick, and soon a Seanton Bomb from the top. O’Haire advances!</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Gene Okerlund is backstage with a pumped-up Giant, and asks him for any comments on the Top Contender’s Tournament. “Actions speak louder than words, Gene — so you want some comments? Look at what I did to Palumbo two weeks ago. And check out what I’m going to do to that scrawny midget Kidman.” Giant snorts with laughter, and walks off.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The size difference is immediately obvious, with Kidman apprehensively ducking and weaving through the Giant’s huge strikes. As Giant begins to tire, Kidman leaps on his back and tries a sleeper-hold — the leviathan begins to fade, but then gets second wind and throws Kidman from his shoulders. The Cruiserweight champion climbs to the top for a desperation missile dropkick to rock the big man, but Giant swats him out of the air like a fly with a huge fist. From that point, it’s all Giant, as he takes his time dismantling Kidman — drawing out the punishment just to prove a point. A huge chokeslam annihilates Kidman, and that’s all she wrote.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Giant seemingly isn’t done with the Cruiserweight champion, putting an exclamation point on his victory with a second chokeslam and then a third! Referees rush out to try and create some space between predator and prey, as the Giant roars and lumbers triumphantly to the back. “Can anyone stop the Giant? Are we looking at the winner of the Top Contender’s Tournament?” Mike Tenay wonders as the show goes off the air.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The Giant - Pretty easy choice, really.

Sean O'Haire - As much as I want Storm to have a strong showing, it isn't happening against O'Haire.

Kanyon

Raven - Kanyon vs. Raven again in the tournament will be great.

RVD/Awesome/Radicalz - So the way I see this is either A: the champion wins and continues being a hugely successful champ, or B: the heels win over one of the lesser members of the face team in order to continue being a strong heel section. I'm going with B.

The Giant - Calling it now: Chuck Palumbo heel turn right here.

Kanyon - If this were first round, I would have called for Kanyon/Raven to have a no contest. But it's not.

The Giant - Giant wins the title shot to head into Starrcade.

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Mike Awesome is at ring-side — the commentators note that Chuck Palumbo isn’t. A different sort of contest, with Storm playing conservatively and trying much the same strategy as Malenko in the last round, wearing down O’Haire with submissions. He locks in the Canadian Maple Leaf for a long time, but O’Haire uses his strength to crawl to the ropes. Limping but riding a wave of adrenaline, O’Haire takes out Storm with clotheslines and superkicks Awesome when he leaps to the apron. Climbing up to the top a little gamely, he hits the Seanton Bomb to advance to the semis.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Booker T is backstage, as he finishes up his tour of historic Starrcade main-events. “A match over a year in the making — Hollywood Hogan and the nWo, against one man, one saviour, one -icon-. Sting, man.” We see highlights of the match that conveniently omit Nick Patrick’s botched count and Bret Hart restarting the match, and go straight to Sting being lifted on the shoulders of WCW’s wrestlers, World Heavyweight Championship in hand.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“But there’s one more huge main-event to come… at Starrcade 2001, I’m gonna lay it all on the line. And when this Big Gold Belt’s on the line, ain’t nobody badder or better than Booker T. Kanyon is out of the gates like a house on fire, peppering Guerrero with strikes and throwing him around the ring. The wily Eddy eventually recovers, turning the tide and starting to target Kanyon’s vulnerable ribs with elbows and a lengthy abdominal stretch. They exchange near-falls, with Eddy kicking out of a Kanyon Cutter and Kanyon reaching the ropes on the Laso from El Passo. Guerrero heads up top, aiming to finish things with a Frog Splash right to the injured ribs, but Kanyon gets the knees up just in time! </div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Smiley jogs out to the ring in a track-suit, as the commentators inform us he’s been training all day for the match. Raven is dazzled by some early offense by Smiley, as the crowd erupt to the sight of a Top Contender’s Big Wiggle. Smiley continues to have Raven on the run, locking in a Crossfire Chickenwing that almost forces him to submit — Raven barely gets a foot on the ropes to break the count. Smiley presses his advantage, but Raven catches him with a stiff shot to the gut and takes over on offense. Smiley’s energy begins to fade with move after move delivered to his increasingly-limp body, before the Evenflow finishes him off.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div><p></p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Mike Tenay reminds us that this match is tornado rules, as all ten men brawl to begin the bout. As the action spills to the outside, a visibly-hurting Billy Kidman tries a springboard shooting-star press but finds only the floor — the crowd gasp and chant ‘Holy Shit’ as he’s taken out of the match and medics begin rushing to ringside. KroniK hold down the centre of the ring as their opponents run in and feed them for clotheslines and spinebusters, but RVD comes off the top with a spinning kick to floor both of them!</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

From this point, things slow down a little as most of the men lay outside in various states of fatigue and the momentum shifts back and forth in the ring. Booker lays out Malenko with an Axe Kick, but then is despatched with a Moss-Covered Three-Handled Family Gradunza from Saturn, who receives a discus clothesline from DDP — and so forth. Kidman is meanwhile led out on a stretcher by medical staff.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The action heats up in the ring, and soon all nine remaining men are back in the fray. Malenko and Saturn are taken out by a double-chokeslams from KroniK, as Page clotheslines Awesome from the ring — and then Brian Adams gorilla-presses Van Dam outside on top of all three! Chavo is surrounded by four opponents and begs for mercy, but is instead hit with a Diamond Cutter, pulled up for a Double Chokeslam, then finished off with an Axe Kick. Poor Chavo.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Giant smells blood in the water, pinning down O’Haire with strike after strike, before tossing the Natural Born Thriller around. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sean O’Haire thrown around like that — he’s almost three-hundred pounds,” Tenay shrieks. Giant chokeslams O’Haire, then turns him over on his belly and locks in a… camel clutch? </div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The two exchange shots from the moment the bell rings, no love lost between these rivals and former friends. Kanyon clotheslines Raven to the outside and throws him into the guard-rails, before Raven takes over and whips him hard into the steps, seeming to bear the brunt on his injured ribs. As Kanyon sucks air, Raven throws him back in and slows the pace with submissions. Kanyon barely stays conscious in a sleeper-hold, but the crowd will him back into it and he makes a desperate, wild comeback. Kanyon and Raven once again exchange punches, before a woozy Raven spits in his face! He takes his time with Kanyon, swatting him around, and toying and teasing the half-conscious Innovator of Offense. Giant’s confidence gets the best of him eventually however, as Kanyon revives and begins pelting him with desperation shots! The crowd are on their feet as Kanyon hits Giant with clothesline after clothesline, causing him to fall to the ground for the first time in his second WCW tenure!</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The audience are now whooping and jumping as Kanyon tries to lift Giant to his feet, before catching him with a modified Flatliner with Giant on his knees. 1… Giant powers out instantly, and Mike Tenay is aghast: “Just one?! What the hell is Kanyon gonna have to do to put him down for three?” Kanyon tries a second kneeling Flatliner, but instead Giant catches him with a hand around the throat and hoists him up for a huge chokeslam, putting all of his rage into it. <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Feedback</span></strong></p><p> </p><p>

I'm going to take a break of around two days before putting up the card for the next WCW Saturday Night. In the meantime, please keep any feedback or comments coming -- particularly about the new format and the Top Contender's Tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

Thanks!</p><p> </p><p>

P.S. We're now at the point where WCW was dead and buried in real-life after a terrible Invasion angle. I hope I've shown that you could have booked WCW in an entertaining and credible manner without the huge stars like Sting, Goldberg and Hogan -- which couldn't have participated due to contractual issues anyway.</p>

One thing I would say is that while this has indeed been a good read, and will continue to be im sure, I'm not sure It would have worked in RL. But this has been great keep up the great work</p>

Loved the tournament and the entire diary overall. It definitely shows WCW as its own brand could have worked using only a smidgen of the existing WWF roster that weren't really going anywhere with the remnants of WCW's dying roster. You've also done a fantastic booking job; everything makes sense and the movement from one feud to the next seems very natural and balanced.

The Giant winning the tournament is the obvious choice. Seeing as how this is a pop over perf WCW, Giant vs. Booker is a money match in the making. I was rooting for Raven myself since he was always wasted in the true national spotlight so I'm loving that he's become a major player in this WCW. He should be a big part of the big show, whether he has a final blow off match with Kanyon or has a big match with DDP.

Only thing I'm concerned about is probably Eddy getting lost in the shuffle a bit. If Giant is the one to dethrone Booker I think he could make a great babyface to overcome a Giant reign of terror.

I've really enjoyed this dynasty. I wasn't a big fan of WCW growing up (I think the last match I watched was Goldberg beating Hogan for the title) but you've done a really good job of establishing and differentiating the characters. I like the new layout as well (easy to read on a phone).

For the tournament, my only suggestion would be to consider holding it in a different time of the year. Having it determine the main event of Starrcade narrows down the potential winners, kind of like what has happened to the Royal Rumble in recent years.

Mayhem was really good. Giant winning was not a really big surprise, as I had called it before the tournament really even got going, but sometimes the best swerve is no swerve at all. I'm excited to see what may happen now that you can bring in some of the names that made WCW great to begin with such as Flair, Goldberg, Mysterio, etc.

Everything since I started this Dynasty has been leading eventually to Booker vs Giant. I just had a few messes on the heel-side that meant I needed to adjust trajectory -- for instance, Raven was never supposed to go heel, with Buff Bagwell taking his spot as the August WHC contender. But that didn't really pan out. <.<</p>

First off, I really enjoyed the show! I thought it was well done, and truthfully it made sense where you were going. Interesting what you said here, because I thought from the beginning of when you brought over Raven, he was going to go heel. His face character just seemed shady in the way you wrote it to me. So that's interesting that originally he wasn't supposed to.

News and Notes: Week 1, December 2001:

  • The post-Mayhem Saturday Night is being promoted as a Night of Champions. Many Starrcade bouts are expected to be set up, as WCW turbo-charges the build to their biggest show of the year. We have had a sneak-peak of the new visual look of WCW Saturday Night, and the predominant colours appear to be black and white. The show logo is a callback to the successful New World Order branding, but the stable is not expected to feature in creative plans going forward.

  • Shannon Moore has returned from injury, and his angle involving James Mitchell is expected to continue.

  • We promised a thorough report on the reshuffled OVW and HWA rosters, along with new developmental signings, and we’re delivering.

  • Talent earmarked for WWF is being trained in HWA. This includes: Shelton Benjamin, Bull Buchanan, Mark Henry, Ron Waterman, the Haas Brothers (Charlie & Russ Haas), Maven, Johnny Swinger, Heidenreich, Eric Angle, Race Steele, Scott Vick, Matt Stryker, Rodney Mack, Sylvester Terkay, Johnny Spade, BJ Payne, Damien, Trailer Park Trash, Sean Casey and Cody Hawk.

  • In addition, these are some of the names signed to pad out the HWA roster: Michael Modest, Chase Stevens, Adam Pearce, Donovan Morgan, Jorge Estrada, Sonny Siaki, Frankie Kazarian, Matt Bentley, Rene Dupree, Sonjay Dutt, Aaron Stevens, Johnny Jeter, Lance Hoyt, Kevin Fertig, Sinn Bowdee, Chris Mordetzky, Johnny Curtis, Prince Nana & Travis Tomko.

  • Talent pegged for WCW is being housed in OVW. This includes: Brock Lesnar, Rico Constantino, Chad Collyer, The Jablonskis (Chet & Dean Jablonski, plus Steve Bradley, working as Brad Jablonski), Christopher Nowinski, Bad Street Boyz (Christian York & Joey Matthews), Island Boyz (Kimo & Ekmo Fatu), Slash, Lance Cade, BJ Whitmer, John Cena, Dave Batista, Onyx, Ricky Banderas and Samoa Joe.

  • In addition, the following additional signings have been made for OVW: Nova, Full Blooded Italians (Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke), Danny Doring, Chris Harris, Low-Ki, Carly Colon, Amazing Red, Brian Kendrick, Paul London, Ken Anderson, Chris Parks, Shark Boy, Hotstuff Hernandez, Aaron Aguilera, Homicide, Caprice Coleman and Khosrow Daivari.

  • Well, we
    did
say it’d be thorough. Most of the women seem to be destined for OVW at this stage, though plans may change.
