Curt Hennig was due to be brought in as a surprise for the Starrcade pre-show gauntlet battle-royal. Flair challenges Storm |
Rating:

Description:
The crowd give Ric Flair a standing ovation as he opens the show. “Last week, when I ran in after the main-event to kick some Canadian butt, it got the old blood flowing. And I got to thinking… Lance Storm, you’re a good wrestler. Very good, you’re a hell of an athlete. But you’re not a great wrestler, and you’re sure as heck not the man. -I’m- the man, and to be the man, you’ve got to beat the man.”

“Which is why I’m laying down this challenge. Ric Flair… Lance Storm… Starrcade! Let’s do this, let’s do it all night long, baby! Wooo!” Flair begins riling himself up, strutting back and forth wildly. Team Canada come out on stage, Storm holding his clipboard: “If I can be serious for a minute, I -will- take time out of my busy schedule to wrestle you at Starrcade, Ric. But when I win, you have to sign the petition.” Flair grins and nods madly, yelling: “I’LL SIGN YOUR ASS, WOOO! IT’S ON, BABY!”

Match Report:
Daniels and Kidman start, with the Fallen Angel scoring a quick near-fall with the inside cradle that beat Kidman two weeks ago! Daniels then attempts an early Angel’s Wings, but Kidman knees his way out and begins bringing the fight to him. Both tag out to D’Lo and Vicious, who go back and forth. Daffney begins taunting Corino at ringside, before Crowbar blindsides him. Vicious and Daniels try for a double-team on D’Lo in the ring, but Kidman dropkicks Daniels out of the ring and D’Lo hits the Lo Down on Vicious to score the win! Daniels rubs his chin on the ramp, shaking his head as he stares down Kidman.

Winner:
Billy Kidman, Steve Corino & The Real D’Lo

Radicalz promo on Dragons |
Rating:

Description:
All four Radicalz are backstage, Saturn wearing the Television title over his shoulder. Eddy Guerrero cuts a cocky promo, saying: “The only reason you’ve held those Trios titles so long is that we were busy with other business, esse. That changes at Starrcade — we’re going to hold those titles for a long time, man.” Chavo interjects, asking: “A year?” Malenko shakes his head, replying: “Two years.” Eddy screams, shimmying back and forth: “A MILLION YEARS, HOLMES!”

Match Report:
A one-sided tune-up match, with the Radicalz taking their time and dismantling Flash Flanagan with quick tags and double-teams. Malenko throws Flanagan into his corner, and Air Paris tags in — only to get beaten down himself. Styles is yanked from the apron by Chavo as Malenko drags Paris into the centre of the ring, applies the Texas Cloverleaf, and forces him to submit. A strong performance for the challengers this Sunday.

Winner:
The Radicalz

Description:
We see a pre-tape of the Natural Born Thrillers in a local gym, lifting weights and training cardio. There’s a little good-natured competition as O’Haire and Palumbo compete with each other, and they end the session covered in sweat, breathing heavily but determined: “KroniK, we’re ready. Are you?”

Match Report:
Sanders taunts Morrus in the early going, but tags out to Jindrak who lays a beating on the big man. Morrus begins exchanging clobbering lefts and rights, forcing Jindrak to tag out to Van Dam, who despatches both members of Misfits In Action with spinning kicks. Kanyon blocks a wheel-kick, and takes out Van Dam and himself with a cactus clothesline to the outside. The referee tries to restore order, but is forced to count Van Dam out, with the legal man Morrus still in the ring.

Kanyon and Van Dam begin brawling into the crowd, with RVD giving the United States Champion a hard Irish whip to a table set up by production. He sprawls Kanyon onto the table, then climbs up onto the edge of tiered seating, a sheer ten feet above his Starrcade opponent! Van Dam performs his thumb taunt, then launches off the edge with a Five-Star Frog Splash through the table! Both men are laid out, though a cocky RVD is first to his feet, grinning and holding his ribs.

Raven’s Nest with DDP |
Rating:

Description:
The ring is set up for Raven’s Nest, as its host introduces his guest for tonight: “The so-called ‘People’s Champion’, Diamond Dallas Page.” DDP joins him in ring, as Raven interrogates him: “You’ve been interfering in my business too much the past few weeks. I beat you in the Top Contender’s Tournament, I have nothing left to prove — and still you persist. Why?” Page glares at Raven, then replies: “Because you’re a bad dude, Raven — and not good bad, -bad- bad.

“You betrayed my best friend Kanyon, you’ve tried to put him on the injury list time after time — and I’ve stood back too long. Enough is enough, and since Kanyon has his hands full with Van Dam, somebody’s got to give you the beating you so richly deserve. To coin a phrase, who better than D… D… P? Bada-bing, bada-boom, bada-BANG!” Raven sneers and the two go face-to-face, before Raven backs off, warning DDP: “You’ll be sorry you messed with me. At Starrcade, you’ll see.”

Description:
In a seeming parody of the KroniK and Natural Born Thriller training pre-tapes, we see a montage of Norman Smiley training for his Television title opportunity tonight. As generic Rocky-inspired production music plays, we see him covered in a gratuitous number of sweatbands jogging through the streets, before stopping to catch his breath, sucking in wind. He climbs some steps and punches the air at the top, the music building to a dramatic crescendo.

Match Report:
Smiley is out in his sweaty exercise gear from the pre-tape, which after locking-up makes Saturn recoil from the stench. The Television champion dismantles Smiley with hip-tosses and suplexes, before tearing the sweatbands off and stomping on them, the crowd voicing their disapproval. Smiley begins to shake with adrenaline, catching Saturn off-guard with a few messy punches, before locking in the Crossface Chickenwing! Saturn struggles in the hold, then breaks Smiley’s grip with a flex of his arms and instead locks in the Rings of Saturn! Smiley is caught and has to submit, tapping quickly.

Booker/Giant face-to-face interview |
Rating:
100

Description:
In the final segment before Starrcade, Gene Okerlund hosts a face-to-face interview with the two men contending for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in the main-event of that show — Booker T and the Giant, who are sat in leather armchairs as they stare at each other. Gene poses the question to Booker: “The Giant is undefeated in singles competition since returning to WCW. What makes -you- think you’ll be the first man to beat him?”

Booker scratches his chin thoughtfully, then answers: “I don’t quit, man. Somebody’s walking out WCW World Heavyweight Champion on Sunday, and I don’t care how many punches he throws, how many chokeslams he gives — I will -not- give up. I’m talking this Big Gold belt to the grave, dog. Like Charlton Heston, you’ll have to pry it from my cold dead hands first. But you ain’t getting that far, sucka.”

Giant stares a hole in Booker all the while, before Gene turns to ask him a question: “Many have wondered the past few months, why -have- you returned to WCW? Some have suspected you of still working for Vince McMahon, out to get revenge on his son Sha—“ Giant holds up a huge hand to interrupt Okerlund, snorting: “Don’t give me that conspiracy crap Gene, you won’t going to get -this- scoop on the WCW Hotline. Whether I’m in the WWF or the WCW, I’m here for one reason — to dominate. I won their world title, I’ve won your world title — I go where I want, and wherever I go, I’m a winner. This is where the big boys play, you guys like to say. Well, I’m the biggest boy of them all, and I play to win.”

Gene asks them both a final question: “To all our WCW fans at home, what are they in store for when they buy Starrcade on pay-per-view this Sunday?” Booker answers first, saying that “I promise each and every one of our fans that I will give them a fight to remember, I will lay it -all- out on the line. You aren’t gonna want to miss this, dog.”

Giant laughs and replies with his huge canines showing as he overenunciates: “This Sunday on pay-per-view, you’re going to see a victimisation, an emasculation, a humiliation as I wipe the floor with Booker T. I’ll put him in a hospital bed right next to Shane McMahon, and take the WCW World Heavyweight title.” Booker T gets in Giant’s face as both men rise to their feet, asking: “Is that so, sucka?” The two get into a pushing contest as security swarm in to separate them, and Mean Gene promises that at Starrcade, titans will collide in a main event for the ages!

<p>The Giant - <em>I only say that it goes to Giant because then you have a huge heel to build around for a few months. You also kinda write him better than Booker.</em></p><p>

RVD - <em>Rob is built for making secondary titles important.</em></p><p>

Kronik - <em>YEAH.</em></p><p>

DDP - <em>Page goes over in order to move into World title contention, while Raven can bugger off into either picking up the US belt or joining with Mitchell to make a new Flock.</em></p><p>

Daniels - <em>I like Billy, but Daniels is way less bland than Kidman. He is someone you can build a story around easier.</em></p><p>

Ric Flair - <em>While one could ask why put a fairly over the hill vet compared to the young Storm, I see Flair winning as a way to reintroduce him to the large crowd.</em></p><p>

Radicalz - <em>Easy pick.</em></p><p>

Perry Saturn - <em>Rings of Saturn and 3 Handled Moss Covered Family Gradunza were always some of my favorite moves.</em></p><p>

??? - <em>Tough to go against a question man.</em></p><p> </p><p>

The package is set to the official Starrcade 2001 theme-song, “Change” by DefTones. We see flickering footage of the first Starrcade, as Harley Race and Ric Flair do battle in a steel cage. As we go through the years, with clips of the memorable moments from each Starrcade event, it’s juxtaposed with the current WCW roster training, stretching and lacing their boots. We go from shots of legends like Sting, Lex Luger, Vader and Hollywood Hogan to current WCW stars like Booker T, the Giant, Kanyon and Rob Van Dam.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The screen flickers as we read the message: “Change. A challenge…” — interspersed with a shot of Kanyon screaming in pain — “…an opportunity…” — we see Booker T holding the WCW World Heavyweight Championship” — “…a threat” — the Giant roars into a camera — “Starrcade: The Next Generation.” As the nu-metal song reaches its chorus, its accompanied with high-octane action shots with fast-camera cuts, of WCW’s wrestlers flying around the ring, hitting hard shots and harder slams. The package ends with the Starrcade logo, and fades to a special star-shaped stage as pyro begins to go off.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Wright elbows his way out and begins a comeback, hitting a huge diving crossbody from the top-rope then signalling for the German Suplex! Saturn squirms his way out, tries for the Gradunza again, but Wright counters it into a hangman’s neck breaker and makes a cover for the win! Tajiri rolls Chavo into the ring and hits the Buzzsaw Kick, and a quick break from Eddy is all that prevents the Dragons from retaining early! Chavo is able to tag out to Malenko, who begins dissecting Tajiri with leg-locks and priming him for the Texas Cloverleaf. Tajiri is able to escape before the hold is locked in, and makes the hot tag to Kaz Hayashi, who runs wild on all three Radicalz, who bump like crazy for him. Malenko is able to cut Hayashi off with a headscissor takedown and tags out to Eddy, who has a newfound fire in him. Hayashi is hit with the Three Amigos, and Eddy goes up top for the Frog Splash and hits it! 1… 2… NO! Kaz tries to tag out to Yang or Tajiri, but the sneaky Malenko and Chavo yank his partners off the rope when they reach the corner. As the two lock-up, Flair gets the better of Storm, causing the Canadian grappler to roll outside. He stalls for time by grabbing his petition and trying to get signatures from fans in the front-row, but Flair grabs Storm and throws him inside. Flair nails his opponent with a handful of scoop-slams then goes for the rolling knee-drop, but Storm rolls out of the way and begins opportunistically taking Flair apart. The crowd will the Nature Boy back into things, as Flair mounts a comeback and sets up for the Figure-Four Leglock! He seems about to lock it in when Awesome leaps to the apron and begins distracting both Flair and the referee. Flair drops Awesome with a right hand to a roar from the crowd, as Storm grabs the petition. </div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Daniels is out with James Mitchell, but the rest of the Family are in the back. Kidman and Daniels do some slightly-sloppy chain wrestling to begin with, as Tenay remarks that the Cruiserweight Champion has already lost twice in tag matches to his challenger, and doesn’t want to make any crucial mistakes. Kidman begins building up momentum, taking out Daniels with dropkicks, before heading up top for the Shooting Star Press. The wily Fallen Angel quickly rolls out of the ring, but Kidman comes off the top anyway with a crossbody to the outside! Mitchell begins to scream and preach at Kidman, and the momentary distraction is enough for Daniels to whip the Champion hard into the guardrail before rolling him back inside. From that point, it’s all Daniels — though Kidman kicks out of the Last Rites, the Fallen Angel lifts him right back up and nails Angel’s Wings for the victory.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Diamond Dallas Page is already in the ring, having made his entrance first. The metal band Stereomud are live at the side of the stage, and begin to play a new theme-song for Raven: “End of Everything.” They play for around a minute and a half until the lead-singer screams “RAAAAAVEEEEN”, and the man himself shambles out and starts walking with purpose down the entrance ramp. DDP stares a hole in Raven as he climbs the turnbuckle and spreads his arms wide, clearly ready for the fight of his life.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The match starts with a dizzying exchange of punches, as the action spills outside and the two eventually begin brawling into the crowd. Heenan shrieks: “Why isn’t the referee counting?! Do your job, ref!”, as Tenay explains that “no doubt official Charles Robinson is allowing a little leniency on count-outs tonight… this -is- Starrcade.” Robinson eventually does begin counting, as Raven floors Page and begins fleeing back to the ring. DDP rises shakily to his feet and is able to rush back to break the count just in time. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Raven gets the upper-hand with a series of stiff elbows and knee-lifts, before setting DDP up for the Evenflow — Page muscles his way out and begins his comeback, hitting a belly-to-back suplex, an inverted atomic drop and a discus clothesline. He throws up the self high-five, and goes for the Diamond Cutter, but Raven hangs onto the ropes and the two tumble in a heap on the floor. The two roll back and forth on the mat, exchanging shots, before Raven hooks an inside cradle and pins DDP! Heenan on commentary begins laughing uproariously: “That’s how he beat him in the Tournament too! Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice, shame on… DDP! O’Haire headbutts his way out, staggering to the corner and tagging Palumbo in. Chuck runs wild on both men briefly, before getting caught by a double clothesline from Adams and Clark — he looks for a tag back to his partner, but O’Haire is half-conscious on the floor holding his ribs and sucking wind after the bearhug. Where were you?!” O’Haire begins to explain and apologise, but instead Palumbo snaps and hits him with a superkick to the jaw as the crowd gasp! Palumbo stares at his fallen partner for a moment, as if shocked by his own action, before doubling-down with hard stomps right to the ribs and injured back. Van Dam hits his signature offense, including the Rolling Thunder, monkey flip and split-legged moonsault, going for quick covers — but he can’t keep Kanyon down! A frustrated RVD leg-sweeps the Champion and hops up top for the Five Star Frog Splash, but Kanyon gets his knees up and a pained Van Dam flops around like a fish out of water. Kanyon rises to his feet and begins building momentum with suplexes and an electric-chair facebuster, before hitting the Flatliner for a convincing victory! A furious Van Dam can’t walk up the ramp fast enough after the bell rings, clearly ashamed of having lost on such a grand stage.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The package is set to Drowning Pool’s Bodies. We see Booker T’s title reign throughout 2001, despatching successive challengers and standing tall each time, raising the WCW World Heavyweight Championship high. We go from PPV to PPV as the Axe Kick finishes off Scott Steiner, Eddy Guerrero, Diamond Dallas Page, Raven and Rob Van Dam. We then see Giant’s 2001 return to WCW, as he flattens opponent after opponent — the unstoppable monster crushes the likes of Shane McMahon, Chuck Palumbo, Hugh Morrus, Billy Kidman, Sean O’Haire and Kanyon with chokeslams. </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The two finally come face to face, as champion and challenger trash-talk at their face-to-face interview and Giant throws Booker around at the contract signing. The message is clear: both of these men have been unbeatable in 2001. But there can be only one winner tonight, and only one WCW World Heavyweight Champion.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

THE SENSATIONAL THRILL THAT STARTLED MILLIONS! LIVE AT STARRCADE, THE MOST AMAZING SHOW ON EARTH. THE MIGHTY MONARCH OF ALL MONSTERS… THE ONE AND ONLY… THE GIANT!” Heenan snarks on commentary: “Do you think that’s wise, Tenay? I mean, he -does- know what happened to Kong, right?” After the footage ends, Giant’s regular theme hits and the Top Contender strides out to the ring in a characteristic bad mood.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> A starfield is displayed on the video wall as generic Star Trek-inspired production music plays. Booker T’s voiceover booms through the arena, his voice serious and stern: “Starrcade… the final frontier. These are the voyages of Booker T. His continuing mission, to defend the WCW World Heavyweight Championship all over the world, to seek out new contenders and new challenges. To boldly go where no man has gone before. Now can you dig that, sucka?” Booker T’s music plays as the champion comes down to ringside wearing a Geordi LaForge-inspired visor, grinning from ear to ear. He clearly shows no lack of confidence.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The crowd are into the match early, but there seems to be some big-match nerves and the two don’t deliver to quite the level one might expect. Giant beats down Booker early with heavy shots, tossing him around the ring — he goes for a chokeslam but Booker squirms out and begins bringing the fight to the Top Contender with open-handed strikes and a spinning heel kick. As the Giant starts wobbling, Booker goes up top and finally brings him down with a Harlem Hangover! 1… 2… Giant kicks out! “That’s the first time anyone’s gotten even a two-count against the Giant so far,” Tenay exclaims!</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Booker presses his advantage by trying for an Axe Kick to a kneeling Giant, and nails it! The Giant kicks out at 2 and a half, but now lets out a roar of adrenaline and begins rising to his feet in anger. Booker tries to keep him down, but the Giant’s strength is too much and he resumes his beatdown of the Champion. He hoists him high with the chokeslam and throws Booker to the mat with all his strength, screaming to the fans: “That’s how it’s done!” He delays a couple of seconds in pinning Booker, which allows the champion to get his shoulder up just in time! Giant is furious and tosses Booker onto his belly, before applying the Colossal Clutch. Booker shakes his head back and forth, refusing to quit. He starts to lose consciousness in the hold, before passing out entirely. The referee is forced to award the match to Giant.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Mike Tenay signs off on commentary, noting: “A new champion for the Next Generation in WCW. We are truly looking at the most dominant athlete in the sport today — can anyone beat the Giant?!”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">
