Really good Starrcade. I can't wait to see who can end up being the man who topples Giant for the title - it may require a few returns from some of the WCW legends who can get back in now!</p>

WCW.com End of Year Awards:

  • COMPETITOR OF THE YEAR:
    Booker T -- 92.31%

With a staggering nine out of every ten votes cast for Booker T, the four-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion blew away all the other contenders on the ballot, with Raven a distant second. Booker had a banner year, carrying the promotion as WCW's top star. He held the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from March to December, defeating Scott Steiner on Monday Nitro and losing to the Giant at Starrcade. He was also a United States Champion, vacating the belt for WCW's June relaunch.

  • TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR:
    KroniK -- 46.15%

The team of Brian Adams and Bryan Clark only won the WCW World Tag Team Championship in October, but have been a dominant presence throughout 2001. Despite their obvious limitations in the ring, their smash-mouth style, menacing look and incoherent promos have endeared them to the WCW fans. The Natural Born Thrillers, who held the World Tag Team titles from January until July, also placed highly with 30.77% of the vote. The Jung Dragons and the team of Malenko and Saturn also enjoyed a decent share of the vote.

  • BREAKOUT STAR OF THE YEAR:
    Christopher Daniels -- 84.62%

In another one-sided result, the Fallen Angel has been voted as the 2001 debut with the most successful rookie year. Daniels achieved little from January to July, but began a lucrative association with James Mitchell in August that has brought him reigns with the WCW Television and Cruiserweight Championships, along with serving as the figurehead of the Mitchell Family faction. Rob Van Dam and Steve Corino also received a reasonable number of votes from WCW fans.

  • PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR:
    James Mitchell -- 38.46%

An enigmatic figure and fork-tongued preacher, this sinister minister has attracted a steadily growing flock throughout the year that now includes Christopher Daniels, Johnny the Bull, Reno, Kid Vicious (formerly Shannon Moore), Crowbar and Daffney. This was a surprisingly close category, as Arn Anderson, Stacy Keibler, Gene Okerlund and Daffney herself all collected a number of votes.

  • SHOCK MOMENT OF THE YEAR:
    Radicalz Invade WCW -- 53.85%

The trio of Eddy Guerrero, Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn wreaked havoc when they interrupted a WCW World Heavyweight Championship match on the first edition of the new Saturday Night back in June. The first major influx of WWF talent since the New World Order, the Radicalz have been a constant force of chaos since. Along with Chavo Guerrero Jr., this faction has held every WCW championship but one in 2001, making an indelible impression on fans. Shane McMahon's historic purchase of WCW, Raven betraying Kanyon at Bash at the Beach and Ric Flair's return for Starrcade received their share of votes too.

News and Notes: Week 1, January 2002:

  • It’s not gone unnoticed that of all the WCW talent in Starrcade’s pre-show Rumble, the veteran British grappler Dave Taylor was not amongst them. Though a victim of mathematics in this case, it is true that WCW are beginning to phase Taylor out. He has worked exclusively with younger talent in dark matches before shows, often putting them over, but it seems likely that he will return to his former role as OVW trainer before long.

  • Taking advantage of post-Starrcade publicity, WCW is running house-shows in Japan this week, including a television taping at Tokyo Sumo Hall. Next week will see the WCW crew fly to Mexico for the second week of their international tour, before returning stateside. New Japan Pro Wrestling and Asistencia Asesoría y Administración, WCW’s partners in each respective region, are helping with some logistics and promotion, along with providing a few local name talents to increase the shows’ drawing power.

  • The rumored cross-promotional initiative planned for these touring shows has been announced on WCW.com — a ‘King of Cruiserweight Trios’ tournament with a mix of established WCW talent, NJPW and AAA teams, and the occasional developmental worker making up the numbers. It comprises of twelve teams, with the winners receiving a trophy and a WCW Cruiserweight Trios Championship shot, facing the Radicalz at January’s WCW Revenge pay-per-view.

  • WCW management are said to be watching the upcoming bouts with interest, as it’s rumored that they intend on scouting its participants and signing the cream of the crop. Most of the other new talent is expected in only for the duration of the tournament, though one or two may stay short-term based on storyline considerations.

  • The teams on the left side of the bracket are: Christopher Daniels & The Mitchell Family (Crowbar & Kid Vicious); New Japan Junior Sekigun (Jushin Thunder Liger, El Samurai & Minoru Tanaka); Billy Kidman & Air Raid (Air Paris & Air Styles); representatives from Team 2000, Masahiro Chono’s heel stable in NJPW (Gedo, Jado & Koji Kanemoto); Team Extreme, comprised of ECW alumni (Nova, Danny Doring & Super Crazy); and the Jung Dragons (Kaz Hayashi, Yang & Yoshihiro Tajiri).

  • Teams on the right side of the bracket are: AAA Técnicos (former WCW stars Juventud Guerrera and Hector Garza, along with Heavy Metal); the Flying Elvises (Mike Sanders partnering with OVW talents Sonny Siaki and Jorge Estrada, in what sounds like a terrible idea); Los Rudos (La Parka, joined by AAA’s Abismo Negro and Nicho El Millionario, who is returning to the Psychosis name WCW fans know him by); New World Order (The Funkster continuing his Hulk Hogan spoof, along with Lash LeRoux and Flash Flanagan); Elix Skipper, Evan Karagias & Romeo; and Alex Wright & The Megabucks (EZ Money & Kash).

  • The first-round matches in the left side of the bracket will be held during tapings in Japan, with the right side’s bouts occurring during the Mexico tour. Round two, which will consist of two three-way trios bouts, will be held the week after, and the finals will take place the week before Revenge.

  • In one for the quality control department, the WCW.com graphic for the tournament lists Team Extreme’s nationality as ‘USA’, despite Super Crazy being Mexican. I suppose it wouldn’t be WCW without the occasional error.

I kicked Booker T’s ass at Starrcade and didn’t break a swea—” He’s interrupted by Booker himself, who comes out on stage indignantly: “Hold your horses, sucka. You beat me, I can’t deny that. But I’m still here, I’m still standing. And they say revenge is a dish best served cold, man — so at WCW Revenge, I’m cashing in my rematch.” Giant lets out a belly laugh, guffawing loudly: “I’ll fight you a hundred times, I’ll kick your ass a hundred times. So we’re going to watch, and we’re going to wait… because even in the best in the world can’t lace our boots, holmes.” Chavo chuckles as Malenko nods in agreement. </div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The Japanese crowd seem quieter, but buzz and applaud with respect after impressive sequences. Nova cuts off Tajiri early, with Team Extreme using a succession of quick, efficient tags to gain a numbers advantage. </div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The Jung Dragons bow to the crowd, and as they make their way up the entrance ramp, Sean O’Haire’s music plays and the Widowmaker marches his way out to the ring. He grabs a microphone, pacing back and forth restlessly: “Palumbo, you’ve got a lot to answer for. We fought together, we won and we lost together… you were like a brother to me, Chuck. And then you stab me in the back, you leave me laying… well, you’ve got some explaining to do. And if I don’t like the explanation, you’ve got a beating coming.”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

He waits for a little while in the ring, but there seems to be no sign of Palumbo. He snarls into the mic: “Chuck, I’m giving you one last chance. Come out here and face me like a man… or I’m going back there and I -will- find you.” He waits a while longer, before shaking his head in disappointment. “I didn’t think it’d come to this. He tries to lock in the Gedo Clutch early, but Styles is too young and fast and tags into Kidman, who gets a superstar reaction. Kidman and Gedo go back and forth until Kanemoto is tagged in, nailing Kidman with high-impact offence including a tiger suplex and falcon arrow. Kofi applies the ankle lock but Kidman reaches the ropes then mounts a comeback, hopping on one foot. He tags into Paris, who runs wild on Team 2000 before getting stopped by a huge lariat from Jado! Jado begins to gloat and showboat, before the self-proclaimed ‘Wrestling Master’ falls prey to an inside cradle from Paris! Team 2000 throw a fit, as the veteran junior heavyweights are upstaged by their younger opponents.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Diamond Dallas Page is backstage and addresses the camera directly. He looks tired and frustrated, rather than his usual upbeat self. “Raven, you beat me in the Top Contender’s Tournament. You beat me at Starrcade. I’ve heard the whispers, I’ve heard it on the grape-vine — DDP is looking his age, DDP is losing his touch, DDP is out of step and out of time. DDP should hang up his boots and retire.” He inhales deeply, looking down uncertainly before raising his gaze back to the camera with a look of newfound determination. “I’m going to prove them all wrong, I’m going to prove -you- wrong, Raven. One more match at WCW Revenge. Let’s settle this for good. What do you say, huh?” He curls a smirk around his lips, nodding a bit as some of his confidence returns.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Team Canada is in the ring, Storm clutching his clipboard tight as he speaks. “If I can be serious for a minute, while I suffered a -minor- setback at Starrcade against Ric Flair, Team Canada have achieved a far greater success. With the aid of a capacity crowd at Starrcade and our legions of Canadian fans, I am proud to announce that our petition has attracted enough signatures to get the attention of Mr. Arn Anderson. At long last, justice has been done, and our rightful rematch for the WCW World Tag Team Championship has been scheduled for the WCW Revenge pay-per-view.” He nods proudly, a little surprised that he hasn’t been interrupted for once, before adding: “Thank you.”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

As Team Canada walk up the ramp, KroniK’s theme plays, and Brian Adams and Bryan Clark come jogging out on stage and start brawling with Storm and Awesome! The WCW World Tag Team Champions wipe Awesome out with a double clothesline then give Storm a colossal back body-drop on the steel entrance ramp. Adams grabs the clipboard then breaks it over his knee, screaming: “WE THE TAG CHAMP TEAM, YEAH!” Clark agrees, adding: “WHO THE MAN? WE THE MAN, YEAH.”</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Match Report:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> The Family are out with Daffney but no James Mitchell. Jushin Thunder Liger starts things off with Kid Vicious, as the crowd give the Beast God a huge ovation. Vicious runs straight into a shotei palm thrust, forcing Daniels to rush into the ring to break things up. Liger tries for the Liger Bomb early, but Vicious reverses into a hurricanrana and tags out to Crowbar. The Family beat down own Liger until he hits an enziguri and crawls to Minoru Tanaka, who runs wild with dropkicks and crossbodies. Tanaka tags to El Samurai, who applies the chickenwing armlock to Crowbar — he’s on the verge of tapping when Daniels plays spoiler again and breaks it up, before eating a superkick from Tanaka! Tanaka gets the tag and goes up top for the Fireball Splash, but before he hits the manoeuvre, Vicious pushes him off the top and he crashes and burns! Crowbar recovers long enough to hit the Mindbender. Liger tries to slide into the ring to break it up, but Daffney grapevines his leg and the referee counts three!</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Vicious lifts up Samurai and hits a hip-toss neckbreaker, achieving Mooregasm! Daniels then hits the Last Rites on Tanaka before the three turn to Liger. They grab him by the hair as Daffney releases her grip, and pull the veteran into the ring — but he wriggles free and begins clearing house on all three men! He tosses Crowbar over the top rope, hits Vicious with a palm-thrust then grabs Daniels and delivers the Liger Bomb! Jushin Liger flexes and poses to the delight of the crowd, as Daffney shrieks hysterically at him.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Kanyon nods and replies: “Thanks Gene, but the battle isn’t over — it’s just beginning. I’m going to do the United States proud and defend this—“ Kanyon takes a tumble as Rob Van Dam thrust kicks him in the back of the head from behind! RVD sneers at him as Gene calls for help. “You’re right this isn’t over, Kanyon. Sanders bails out to Jindrak, who begins beating Flair down with slams and strikes. The Nature Boy plays babyface in peril to perfection as the Japanese crowd get into things and root for a hot tag — Flair manages to reach Booker T, who cleans house on both members of Double Trouble! Booker hits the Book End on Jindrak, clotheslines Sanders over the top, then finishes Jindrak with the Axe Kick for an impressive rebound victory.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Description:</strong></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Booker T and Ric Flair are celebrating afterwards, with Booker acting a little awestruck to be in the company of the living legend. The crowd begin gasping as The Giant walks down to ringside with bad intentions, and Booker and Flair turn to face him. Giant climbs onto the apron as Booker begins pelting him with strikes, but he does the roar spot and throws Booker halfway across the ring! Giant stares down Flair, barking: “Stay out of this.” He begins pummelling Booker as the crowd go nuts, begging Flair to do something — Naitch looks back and forth at the audience, then slides to the outside and grabs a chair! As Flair enters the ring with weapon in hand, Giant backs off and snorts. It seems the big man didn’t want to contend with a riled-up Nature Boy with an equaliser in hand! Flair tends to Booker as the show goes off the air.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

We’re being told that this week’s edition of the program, emanating from Mexico City, will likely be similar as management don’t want to halt the build for Revenge for another week.</div><br /></li><li><div style="margin-left:25px;"> Of the Cruiserweight Trios workers from the Japan shows, Jushin Thunder Liger made a strong impression and is expected to remain around in the short-term to work a program with Christopher Daniels. No interest was shown in El Samurai, Minoru Tanaka, Koji Kanemoto, Gedo and Jado, for various reasons. Nova and Danny Doring are already working in OVW, teaming with a fitness gimmick as ’The Gymini’. Super Crazy is in negotiations for a possible developmental contract, and is working this week in Mexico but is not expected to be on the road afterwards.</div><br /></li><li><div style="margin-left:25px;"> In what appears to be either a running joke or a serious backstage issue, Dr. Nick Dinsmore is the next roster name to be sent to rehab for a drug habit. Rob Conway, who was brought up just two months ago to team with Dinsmore, is likely to be in lower midcard purgatory until his partner returns, unless creative come up with a bold new direction for him. It’s a good thing that the Trios tournament is padding out the roster at present, otherwise the touring crew may start looking a little empty.</div><br /></li></ul><p></div></p><p> The updated King of Cruiserweight Trios Tournament brackets:</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z459/kazkukat/WCW%202001/triosw1_zpsok71fkkl.png</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="41628" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>WCW Saturday Night - Week 2, January 2002</strong><p> </p><p> The Radicalz (Eddy Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn & Chavo Guerrero Jr.) vs Sean O’Haire, KroniK (Brian Adams & Bryan Clark) & Billy Kidman</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> <strong>King of Cruiserweight Trios Tournament - First Round</strong></p><p> AAA Técnicos (Juventud Guerrera, Hector Garza & Heavy Metal) vs Flying Elvises (Mike Sanders, Sonny Siaki & Jorge Estrada)</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> Kid Vicious vs Jushin Thunder Liger</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> <strong>King of Cruiserweight Trios Tournament - First Round</strong></p><p> Los Rudos (La Parka, Psychosis & Abismo Negro) vs nWo (Hollywood Funkster, Kevin Lash & Bad Guy Flanagan)</p><p> Comments:</p><p> </p><p> <strong>King of Cruiserweight Trios Tournament - First Round</strong></p><p> Elix Skipper, Romeo & Evan Karagias vs Alex Wright & The Megabucks (Kash & EZ Money)</p><p> Comments:</p></div></blockquote>
