Week 1, October 1994

WCW Saturday Night

Region: South East

Attendance: 19,423

Rating: 2.80 (1,820,390 viewers)

Card Rating: B+

Hakushi d. Yoshiaki Fujiwara (C-)

Match Notes: This was a highly technical bout with Fujiwara putting in solid work before submitting to a dragon sleeper.

Gene Okerlund comes out on the rampway and says he has a very special guest tonight. For the first time since May of this year, please welcome...Rick Rude!

The crowd pops as Rick Rude's music plays, but the crowd noise dies as Rick Rude is wheeled out from the back in a wheelchair by a young Japanese woman.

http://i.imgur.com/fCDzUE4.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/DdH2fYp.jpg

Gene Okerlund asks Rick Rude for an update on his health. Rick Rude cuts a biting, emotional promo about his injury. He explains that at first the doctors said he would never wrestle again, but Rick Rude refused to give up. He worked harder than ever to make a comeback, determined to get his revenge on Sting and become the World Champion. But, as it turns out, the doctors were right. He injured himself working out and made it all worse. Now it isn't about wrestling anymore, Rick Rude will never walk again.

Rude hangs his head momentarily while Gene offers his sympathies. Rude jerks his head up with a menacing look at Gene and grabs the mic. Don't feel sorry for Rick Rude! he exclaims. All he can think about is how his life is ruined, how is confined to this wheelchair, pushed around by his assistant Megumi. The rage builds and he makes it clear he wants one thing; revenge! He wanted Sting to know how it feels to see your career burn before your eyes, and since he couldn't do it himself, he found someone who could!

Suddenly The Barbarian walks out from the back and stands next to Megumi and Rude, arms crossed.

Gene is shocked! Rick Rude hired The Barbarian to attack Sting????

Rude makes it clear that this isn't over. He won't stop until Sting is a wheelchair, just like he is! Megumi wheels Rude back out while The Barbarian menaces Okerlund. (B-)

Tully Blanchard d. Bobby Walker (C+)

Following the match, Arn Anderson confronts Tully Blanchard in the ring. Arn tells Tully that they've been friends for a long time, but now that's over with. So now that they aren't friends anymore, it's time to answer a question that's plagued them both for years. It's time to find out which one was truly the best! Tully smiles and agrees. They shake hands and agree to a match at Halloween Havoc! (B)

Dusty Rhodes is backstage telling Dustin that his future is bright (B)

Giant Haystacks d. Brian Armstrong ©

Post Match, Davey Boy Smith confronts Giant Haystacks! (B-)

Rick Martel d. John Tatum ©

Nick Bockwinkel confronts Steve Austin backstage. Austin is walking around in a t-shirt with a dead dragon on it. Bockwinkel says he has a surprise for Austin at Havoc, something that will teach him some respect. (B)

Doom and The Jurassic Powers get into a wild brawl backstage (B-)

Ric Flair comes to the ring and cuts an epic promo on Hulk Hogan, vowing to win their rematch at Halloween Havoc and once again become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion! (B+)

Ric Flair d. Brad Armstrong (B)

Following the match, Hulk Hogan makes his way to the ring and confronts Ric Flair. The two men are jawing back and forth when Sid enters the ring and attacks Hogan. Hogan overpowers Sid and throws him over the top rope and does his posedown in the ring while Flair and Sid walk up the ramp. (A+)

Scott Hall d. Paul Orndorff (B-)

Following the match, Terry Funk beats down Scott Hall with a rubber chicken for meddling in his feud with Dustin Rhodes! (B+)

<p>So while Curt Hennig's back problems healed, Rude's gets worse. So like life. At least he got a pretty hot nursemaid out of it.</p><p>

I don't think Kevin can physically powerbomb Cactus on the floor to give him the amnesia, but I'll watch to see how he pulls this off <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

<strong>Week 1, October 1994</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>News and Tidbits from WCW</strong></p><p>

-Obviously the big news in WCW is the return of Rick Rude, though in a non-wrestling capacity. The deal Rude signed is a short term deal and will see him perform managerial duties on-screen to act out a feud with Sting. There has been talk that Rude may be considered for a long term role as a color commentator with the company at the conclusion of this current contract.</p><p>

-A lot of people in WCW are excited about the work they are seeing out of Tully Blanchard right now and the build to a program with Arn Anderson is highly anticipated. Blanchard is likewise on a short term deal though he has expressed a strong desire to sign long term with WCW. </p><p>

-WCW's World in Japan event was a HUGE success, both in terms of commercial numbers and in terms of brand awareness. In particular, the Stan Hansen vs Antonio Inoki match was extremely well received for it's brutality.</p><p>

-The Can-Am Express have indeed signed long-term deals with WCW and will moving to the United States over the next few months to work exclusively for the promotion.</p><p>

-Alex Wright has signed a long-term deal with WCW. Wright rebuffed overtures from the WWF and despite a significant contract offer decided to remain with WCW in large part due to the belief in him from WCW legend Ric Flair.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Rumor Mill</strong></p><p>

-WCW executives are extremely high on Hakushi. There are rumors that the Japanese import is getting consideration for a main event run in 1995.</p><p>

-Eric Bischoff was heard backstage saying that he couldn't believe the contract that the WWF gave his buddy Diamond Dallas Page. Some suggest that Bischoff may have colluded with his friend to help him get an above market deal to jump to the WWF due to WCW's lack of direction for the aging worker with little experience.</p><p>

-Nobody is getting talked up more in the company right now than Vader. Everyone is excited to see his work at Halloween Havoc. </p><p>

-Ricky Steamboat has seen 3 different specialists, including Rick Rude's doctor. To date they've all told him the same thing; time to retire. Reaching Steamboat right now is difficult as he has unplugged his fax machine.</p>

Mr. Perfect interrupts Owen and berates him the way in which he retained his belt, reminding Owen that the only reason he's standing here today with the belt around his waist is because some hooded man assaulted Bret. - Prior to (re-)signing with WWF, Curt Hennig aka Mr. Perfect was courted heavily by WCW. Reportedly, they wanted him for a program with Hulk Hogan that would see the two men butt heads at Starrcade. With Hennig out of the picture, rumors are afloat that WCW will instead sign Hogan's good friend Ed Leslie, who is best known as Brutus Beefcake from his tenure with WWF, to face Hogan at Starrcade.

- A feud between Doink and Jerry Lawler was recently suggested to Vince McMahon, leading to a Survivor Series match between the two and 3 midget wrestlers on each side. Thankfully for the unknown writer suggesting this outlandish storyline, McMahon thought it was an amusing rib and laughed it off.

- In spite of some pretty good (without being spectacular) matches at WWF's When World's Collide, the overall feeling among fans was that the show did not deliver - likely because it failed to advance any storylines.

I'm pretty sure the WWF title match wouldn't have had the hooded figure interfere in the match without Bret as special guest referee.
