[RELEASE] - 1985 Real World

Recommended Posts

Okay folks, the 1985 real world mod is here. I don't have a name for it or a banner, but see below for some detail.

Data and game world:

Beginning in October of 1985, this mod offers you the chance to pick up at a time when the UK has THREE promotions on television (fair enough, one was in Wales). You also have various US promotions on Screensport, most US promotions with some form of television deal and...more importantly I hear you all say...the NWA in a relatively healthy state. Oh, alright, the important part is really WWF post-Wrestlemania I and the fact the WCCW, Mid-South and AWA could all join Jim Crockett Promotions in battling with the WWF juggernaut.

The release itself utilises the 1987 TGA mod released by Genadi as it's base, whilst pulling from work I've done for various mods on the UK & Europe, Alv's 1980 mod and Justtxyank's Rising Storms with a whole raft of additions on top of all that. So, thanks goes out to my Mod Squad colleagues for the data, chat, allowing me to collaborate with them, the discussion and their tolerance levels.

I've no doubt the release will raise issues, debate and discussion. At times I've made a call on what to do with a worker, his name and/or alter egos. With the UWF, I've of course started them as Mid-South and narratives will change the name and logos. The title belts begin as the UWF ones as obviously you can't set belts to retire or become live in game.

I've added a few promotions, tried my best with the TV deals (quite possible AWA and/or WWF have too many affiliates, though I've no doubt some may drop off), given the NWA as wide a group of members as possible and trawled Screensport indents and footage to try to understand exactly how many promotions were on there. There's some new logos in there, some workers will have edited bios and others will no doubt have ones that mention events post-85. Title histories have been edited, does my head in though that you can't delete them from within the title screen so I'll have missed some out of sheer monotony.

You will of course no doubt get to use Gino...ohhhhhhhh Gino...beyond his death and perhaps Mike Von Erich will make a full recovery. Just some of the joys to uncover as you progress from the start of October 1985 onwards.

If you spot anything that needs edited or you feel could be a possible change then feel free to post them on here. I ran 9 year long runs and I'm two weeks in to a diary, nothing really obvious has jumped out at me or at least no game changers.

The main thing I didn't really change was Halls of Fame and there's only one starting storyline as you'll set your own and the game won't run those provided anyway.

PIC PACK:

The supplied pick pack includes all of my edits, quite frankly every single one I've done for various mods, along with the entire MSP pic pack and possibly some gathered from Justtxyank's pic pack.

Game Speed:

Runs nice and fast on my PC, plus being born in the 70's probably means I'm a bit more patient. :) Hopefully it'll be playable for all, should be.

THE LINKS (now updated to V1.2):

Now on to V1.2, felt the edit of the NWA and relocation of locations back to the Mid-Atlantic merited that. There's a few other edits out there, including being able to add Polynesian Pro to the NWA. CWF are limited to Regional, whilst the limit has been removed for the WWA.

I've updated V1.1, just didn't feel it merited being 1.2. Big Bear Promotions is added in, plus JCP is based in Mid-Atlantic with the Carolina's moved back to Mid-Atlantic. The Mid West State locations have also been moved out of the Mid South so Central States works properly. Oh and The Destroyer is added in.

Enjoy, the mod and the time you'll spend on youtube finding out more.

Okay, I've looked over JCP and found a few other things that need to be adjusted.

1) Worldwide has no US coverage, which is weird. The only network that covers the US that will agree is FNN (Financial News Network) as TBS is set to National. I'm also not sure how to do it in the game, but I remember getting to watch some of World Championship Wrestling on my local independent station in the Louisville, KY market some (usually like once every couple of weeks) Saturday afternoons. Not sure if that was 85 or 86 though.

2) On that note, you have to up all 4 production levels to appease TBS. Not a huge deal with the $5 million you start with though.

3) The US Tag AND US Titles and TV titles all have defenses that go into 1986. So does the Crockett Cup with the Road Warriors winning it. Mid-Atlantic Hvy is still active despite no one holding it, and I don't remember it being a thing then.

4) Why does Magnum T.A. have such bad stats considering 85 to the car wreck was full of two of the best feuds of the 1980's that didn't involve Flair or Hogan? Also, Mick Foley has way, way, way too good stats. Like you lifted him out of one of the 1997 mods level good.

5) Was this one of the weird times Tommy Young isn't working for JCP so that's why he's unemployed? It's always odd to open an 80's mod and not see him with JCP.

6) The Midnight Express is set to an inactive unit as a tag team. Not sure if the AI will ever flip that back on its own.

7) I'm not sure why, but I'm can't get Ole Anderson to push as anything but Road Agent. I even went in and upped his Occ. Wrestler to Usually, but it didn't change the recommended push. Oh, and the 4 Horsemen are set to be active already despite it showing 1986, but it is with the 2nd version with Luger.

Okay, for the general things.

1) I do love the Mod Squad's persistence in keeping the Freelancer thing alive despite the game never being able to handle it. They'll just sit there unemployed forever. This is big with regards to Honky Tonk Man as he'll never join WWF to have his record-long IC title reign. Again, I know why you put it there. It's the fact that the game can't deal with it that is the problem. Also, why not Wayne Ferris with HTM as an alter ego? Some of us are old enough to remember him as a Blonde Bomber.

2) Terry Funk is set to only Japan. Not sure if that's intentional or not, though he's working for WWF and AJPW.

3) There are several workers with poor physical ratings that force them to skip House Shows that wrestled for years and years after this which is weird. The biggest one is Stan Lane who is in the midst of one of the greatest tag team runs in modern wrestling history (and would have lasted longer if Herd wasn't such a tool). If they start that low, one injury could end their career plus constantly ding your match ratings.

4) This is the biggest one, and I've been meaning to ask this since I've been playing another Mod Squad mod. Why are there so many pre-set Decline, Relevance Age, and Retirement Ages? The worst ones are the ones where an in-ring injury or real life injury or death are factored in. In the 2001 mod, it was Eddie Guerrero, and in this one, there are a bunch. Magnum T.A. being the obvious one. I'm sure you all have a very logical reason. I'm just curious what it is as I've never seen that until this group of mods.

If it is there to guarantee you won't randomly get someone in time decline that shouldn't be, that's one thing, but this is a fantasy booking game not "history is set in stone" game. Same thing with the locked contracts where they're signed with WWF for an eternity (a few contracts aside). It makes the game less fun. Plus, a locked roster tends to mess the AI up where it won't sign any of the younger superstars so I get to sign them all with no competition.

Go ahead and keep it as once you know it is there, it takes about 30 minutes to find everyone you care about and edit it out and probably a little longer to change the contracts if you want, but you don't know if you never looked for it.

Cheers for the below, responses in bold.

though.

I couldn't find too much on the networks Worldwide was on in the US. Quite possible I went down another rabbit hole on kayfabe memories and forgot to turn back.

2) On that note, you have to up all 4 production levels to appease TBS. Not a huge deal with the $5 million you start with though.

Yeah, it's never really much of an issue to do individually and the game can handle it for the ai.

3) The US Tag AND US Titles and TV titles all have defenses that go into 1986. So does the Crockett Cup with the Road Warriors winning it. Mid-Atlantic Hvy is still active despite no one holding it, and I don't remember it being a thing then.

The 86 defences are just utter laziness on my part, just infuriates me that you have to go through one section of the editor to find them then another to delete them...even then, that's only if you have the title history to hand.

Both were lifted from 87, I'll look at Magnum again and Cactus.

5) Was this one of the weird times Tommy Young isn't working for JCP so that's why he's unemployed? It's always odd to open an 80's mod and not see him with JCP.

I looked at who was working October to December, I'll have another peak.

6) The Midnight Express is set to an inactive unit as a tag team. Not sure if the AI will ever flip that back on its own.

Probably not...eh Adam :) ... so I'll take a look.

I'll take a look at both.

I totally forgot about Ferris, I did use him as the Blonde Bomber in my brief 1980 diary. I have Amazing Kung Fu as freelance as he was, must admit it's more my not looking that a persistence. I have seen in game hirings of freelance though, Rambo in 1991. Shouldn't be a feature if the game can't handle it...

2) Terry Funk is set to only Japan. Not sure if that's intentional or not, though he's working for WWF and AJPW.

Aha...yeah, that'll have slipped past. Really wish you could do a can't work in filter with the editor.

Yeah, I found some physical ratings that I changed whilst working on this. I didn't go through all 1,000+ active workers though. I'll fix Lane and, well again it's not the easiest thing to fix across the roster.

I just have a real issue using wrestlers post-their death or inactive period. I get the fantasy part and the not set in stone, but I like to retain a certain amount of reality...it's my nod in their direction. Sadly Adam removed the ability to set someone as dead within the in game editor...strange decision in all honesty. That's made a few of my profile additions of noting historical deaths useless really (Tommy Lorne for example). So it's a personal thing, even more so since the passing of Drew McDonald who I booked a few times.

As for contracts, it needs some sort of checks and balances...make people work a bit, build guys up, not just hoard everyone. You know, actually experience the era a little bit.

I just disagree with it but totally understand your point of view. There's a reason I love The Superfly Effect way more than I like TGA. Magnum being alive changes literally everything over the next 5 years so I don't want to see him retiring a year into the game. And I wanted a shot at signing Eddie as ROH in the 2001 mod. The contract lengths are more of an issue with regards to the National Battles that got added in 16. It's going to be a little difficult to compete with WWF as JCP in that area if you can't poach anyone.</p>

<p>Thanks for all the feedback. I'm slowly going through and making some changes, incorporating some of those mentioned through various avenues. I'm just gaining access to October 85 from Mid South to review, but from just looking at results the TV could be from all over the year. Also appears Akbar is away by that point in 85, so I'll probably give November and December 85 a quick look also.</p><p> </p><p>

There'll be an update released eventually, I'll update the opening post in that case.</p>

Since you're heavily-invested in historical accuracy, could I suggest that you pre-set some manager-client chemistry? I ran my first show with JCP and had Eaton and Cornette have horrible chemistry which may have been one of the worst things to ever happen in a TEW game that didn't involve a Kenny death. The only ones I could come up with off the top of my head would be Ellering and both Road Warriors and Eaton & Lane w/Cornette. Basically just reserve it for tag teams that were never managed by anyone else or you can't possibly see them being managed by anyone else.

Also, this has been bugging me for a very long time, but I always chalked it up to TEW itself. Why do I get different pop gains in different mods? Some mods I get 0.4 all the time (my ROH game with the 2001 mod being one), TSE I got 0.6 with JCP, and some I get 0.2. Before someone hops in, this is with different fed sizes but with similar or equal network sizes and time slots and Medium Positive products. I'm asking because that first show gained me a whopping 0.2, and that is one of the best ways to get me to quit the game if I'm at Cult or lower.

Basically, what do I need to adjust so I will get 0.4 or higher when the industry isn't in the toilet (this starts at B- and rising so it isn't that)? It's just incredibly annoying to spend all the time setting everything up only to find out you've been 0.2 whammied and sent to grind hell.

You can certainly suggest it. :)

As with pop, I genuinely do not have a clue. In my UWF diary, my pop gain in Tri State has basically ground to a halt. I even had a PPV, with medium coverage across the States, that hit a B- and got me zilch. My B- or C+ TV gets me 0.2, with Rude on there, more recently with Luger, Hayes and the Steiners too. I can only assume that Sportschannel America has small coverage and as such blah blah guesswork.

I also fiddled with both shows prestige ratings mainly because I'd rather the AI try and get WCW on before the historically-2nd level show in WWW.</p>

<p>I was kind of hoping Adam, Derek, or Jaysin would pop in here with the answer. <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

How do you delete a few of the title lineages? I tried to fix the JCP ones and couldn't figure out how to do it. I hope it isn't write everything down, delete it, create a new copy, enter everything in again. I have a feeling someone would have started an insane asylum for mod makers by now if that's the case.<img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Two errors I've found. 1) There's no Fabulous Ones (or The depending on your preference) in the mod. It picked up their title history once I added them in just fine, and the in-game editor lets you put in tag experience. They were my first real tag team so hold a special place in my heart. Also, Stan Lane's face should be higher than 50 as he was always a face in Memphis for those 4 years the Fabs were a thing. 2) Nikita Koloff was still a heel. You missed that when you imported from the 87 mod. The Koloffs win the tag titles in Nov., and he doesn't get turned face until after the day the NWA died aka Magnum's crash.</p><p> </p><p>

Oh, and Honky Tonk Man is another one with low physical settings. Ted DiBiase too though that's a little debatable with a balance between all the grind he had pre-WWF and how much WWF just beat people down.</p>

Also, Stan Lane's face should be higher than 50 as he was always a face in Memphis for those 4 years the Fabs were a thing. 2) Nikita Koloff was still a heel. You missed that when you imported from the 87 mod. The Koloffs win the tag titles in Nov., and he doesn't get turned face until after the day the NWA died aka Magnum's crash.</p><p> </p><p> Oh, and Honky Tonk Man is another one with low physical settings. Ted DiBiase too though that's a little debatable with a balance between all the grind he had pre-WWF and how much WWF just beat people down.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> I've been editing almost daily, surprised I missed the Fabs though I think I recall making a mental note to check tag teams then found footage of Nick Patrick announcing and fell down a rabbit hole.</p>

<p>Okay, that might be as funny as Brother Midnight from River City Wrestling that the 6:05 podcast covered with Cornette and on his official podcast YT channel Arcadian Vanguard (his co-host's YT channel).</p><p> </p><p>

Oh, and I just double-checked. Another legacy error from 87 is that Piper is set as a face. Might need to go through and just check that everyone in the WWF and JCP (though Nikita is the only one I saw though Manny Fernandez is the only heel on the 6-man tag which I don't think is right) is set properly. WWF did some glacial booking, especially by even mid-90's standards much less 2010 standards, but some things changed.</p><p> </p><p>

And I went ahead and set WWW to air on TBS along with upping JCP's momentum to B and got a +0.6 gain everywhere but SE, but the show was better this time around, on a Big network, and run in Mid-Atlantic (lower pop than in the SE). So, I'm still confused. Network size has never mattered before, though I think it is supposed to, but I've been on lower than Big outside of WCW and WWF/E games.</p>

That, sadly, then makes it impossible for American promotions to get the syndicate deals. One solution might be to just bang WWW on to the First Run Syndication broadcaster, which has all US areas as Medium. I should probably have a FRS with low or even small also as I've got ICW's TV on FRS. Would be nice if it was home country/area and not home region to allow regional expansion.</p><p> </p><p> JCP momentum is very much up for debate, suppose you could argue B.</p><p> </p><p> I was going to do the face/heel checks, definitely on my list and short term I'll fix Piper anyway.</p>

That was just me trying to figure out how to lock in more than a pathetic 0.2 pop gain per show. I do know that other mods have a US Syndication broadcaster that covers the entire US instead of the multitude of small broadcasters that filled that role. It just makes it easier for the player to have one deal to handle instead of 9-11 deals. You might want to lower TBS' requirements just to ensure that they don't get dropped if the human is playing as them (they die if the AI plays them through narratives) as that 0.2 could prevent players from getting there. 1.8 (0.2 x 8 + 0.2 event) x 24 (2 year deal for Sat. Night on TBS)= 43.2 which likely won't hit National in a couple of regions depending on how the regional importance stands. Is anyone else going to ever hit Cult? You might want to just drop it to Cult with a 55 pop requirement in 8 regions instead of the National at 65 pop in I think 6 regions that they have right now.</p><p> </p><p> On that note, I also would suggest that you up the bottom level importance can go. I've always found that if it falls below 75 the AI can't keep a company at National. Basically, just assume that the AI will keep the pop around 74-77 and figure out how low you can go on that. I just automatically go into the mod and up the US regions to 75 now, but I thought I'd share that. It's fun to defeat your opponent but not like that.</p><p> </p><p> Now, I just have to go manage my horribly-bloated roster (I have a real problem <img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> ), plot how Larry Z is going to join the newly-created 4 Horsemen (Ole got hired away which wasn't that big of a loss as he's a jerk), the US Tag title tournament, and more. So as always, thanks for the mod.</p><p> </p><p> PS--You might want to extend Superstars' length to try and force more matches. Anything to make up for the insane decision to remove match lengths from 16. NJPW does 2 matches per show as well. It's affecting WWF's ratings because they're running 2 matches, with one being a women's match so they're in the low-to-mid 70's when they should be higher.</p>
