Battle lines have been drawn. What if the NWA struck first....

Recommended Posts

Actually,I would tend to think Hogan's lack of putting people over is again a factor of McMahon; When you look at it,the guys who really put their opponents over,The Flairs,Races,Bockwinkles,Funks, etc. were pretty much all NWA guys,in the NWA territory the point of the World Champ pretty WAS to go around to the different territories and put the local guy over to pop the gate....After all,if it seemed like the local Main Event never had a shot in heck of winning, people wouldn't bother showing up.The exception there is Bockwinkle, who is an AWA guy,but pretty much worked the "travelling champ" deal with the AWA affiliated territories just like the NWA Champ did and that attitude corncerning the usage of a World Champ carried over into JCP then to WCW(latter days aside).

On the other hand, you had the WWF;they withdrew from the NWA and had no affiliated territories to worry about placating, plus it went National so there were no "local" Main Event guys. The point of a Champ was the same though,to pop the gate (and later PPV buyrates).Without a teritory system to support it,pretty much what they did was make the Championship more centric and a reverse system eveolved(i.e.putting the champ over rather than the challenger). This was the system Hogan found huge succes with for many years,so I guess after so long of getting his way it became ingrained leading to a more ego-centric attitude.

It would have been interesting had Magnum T.A. not been horribly injured in an automobile accident;at the time he was getting the Hogan-esque push in the NWA,had the blend of charisma and in-ring talent(best....Belly to Belly...ever),and was young enough that he could have carried the torch until today. There's a good chance he could have been JCP/WCW's answer to Hogan.

You make good points. I loved the NWA territory system. Which is why I love this mod so much. The fact that you could have multiple territories throughout the US, all with there own local champ. Storylines running locally and all the while a universally recognized champ for everyone to gun for popping from time to time to headline the big show for the local promotion. The champ was always kept strong, all the while showing that he would do anything to keep the gold. The local promotions would groom talent and when that rare individual came along that the Board felt could carry the NWA he was pushed to the National level. This prevented everything from getting stale, as you wouldn't have the same feuds recycled over and over and it seemed that there was always a fresh face making a play for the title.

As for Magnum, yeah he was on the way to the top. Having spent time in Mid-South, Florida and other places; when he was finally ready for that big push to the top, he made his way to Flair country. As the NWA Title had become centralized here in JCP by virtue of Flair being anointed ring bearer after Race. Magnum was pushed to the forefront. He was a natural. He had the look and charisma to carry the weight of the crown. All the sources that I have read indicate that by the end of 87 he would have worn the title. This would have set the NWA up with an angle that they could run with for years. With Flair and Magnum headlining the promotion who knows. But alas the wreck and the end of a budding superstar's career. I met TA(who by the way was given that nickname by Andre while in MSouth), after the accident at a meet the fans event at Steamboat's MA Gym in Charlotte in 88. I had seen him wrestle at the Coliseum (now Cricket Arena) in early 86. He just wasn't the same. He didn't act bitter or anything, was as nice as any I have ever met(I'll go into some of that latter as it gets to the storylines I have planned.) I was 16-17 years old and I can remember thinking what if?

OCC:I've had alot of stuff come up over the last week or so. Which is my excuse for not having Caged Heat results up yet. (I also, can't get a banner cut that I like. Man I'll be glad when I learn how to do this without screwing up.)

Breaking news! We have just learned that we will be granted an exclusive interview with Head Booker of NWA, INC, Huston Hartsell after tonight's Caged Heat. We hope to learn from Mr. Hartsell the details of the deal made between the NWA and WWF, as well as getting his reaction to the outcomes of tonight's matches.

Caged Heat PPV Sunday Week 4 Feb 1983.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/cagedheat.jpg

Coming to you live in front of a sold out crowd of 12000 at Mid Atlantic Big Arena!

_________________________________________________________________

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/GordonSolie2.jpghttp://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/BobCaudle.jpg

The show opens with Gordon Solie and Bob Caudle at the podium.

GS "Welcome everyone to Caged Heat; we are live on PPV coming to you from The Mid Atlantic Big Arena. We have a great show for you tonight. Folks we have not one but two Loser Leave Town contests. The first one pits the Wild Samoans against Ole Anderson and a mystery partner. If the Samoans lose then they are banned from the area for a period of 90 Days. If Ole and his partner lose, then Ole has vowed to retire. If this match is anything like the matches in the past then it will be a war.

We also have The Great Kabuki defending the MA TV Title against Jimmy Valiant in a loser leave town match. Winner gets the title and the loser leaves town. This should be a great match.

Tommy Rich and Buzz Sawyer continue their feud; as do Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan. Then we also have a US Hwt Championship match as well as two World title matches as Wahoo McDaniel takes on Greg Valentine for the US Title and Steamboat and Youngblood defend the World Tag Titles against The Funks. And in the main event Harley Race takes on Ric Flair for the NWA World Hwt Title. And all these matches will take place inside a fifteen foot high steel cage. So folks sit back and enjoy the show."

_________________________________________________________________

A video is played highlighting the on going feud between The Wild Samoans and the Minnesota Wrecking Crew.

The Samoans make their way down and enter the cage.

Ole Anderson makes his way out to the podium for an interview.

GS "Ole, are you ready for what may very well be your last match? Any word on who your partner is to be?"

OA "My last match Gordon? I'm not ready for it to be my last match. I indeed have a partner. One that will more than even the odds. I just hope the Samoans are ready to get their a**** kicked Anderson style."

He leaves the podium and heads for the ring. He stops right before entering the cage and looks back up the ramp. From out of the curtain emerges Ole's tag partner.

Gordon "Bob, that's Stan Hansen. "

Bob "Well Ole said he wasn't ready for this to be his last match."

The Wild Samoans v Ole Anderson and Stan Hansen National Tag Champions

An all out war just as you would expect with so much on the line. The Samoans bust Ole open early on. But he fights through it. He catches Afa with an Anderson running knee to score the pinfall and banish the Samoans from the promotion for 90 days at 9:44 and retain the Titles. The match was hurt due to Afa being off his game, and Ole really being off his. Hansen looked good out there. Sika and Ole are improving in rumble skills. C+

A video is played of the on going storyline between The Great Kabuki and Jimmy Valiant.

Interview with The Great Kabuki w/Gary Hart.

Hart "Valiant, in your arrogance you asked for this match. It will be The Great Kabuki's overwhelming prowess in the ring that will rid us of you. You don't stand a chance tonight Valiant. With his in ring skills and my superior intelligence guiding him every step of the way we are an unbeatable force!" Kabuki is improving in performance skills.

Interview with Jimmy Valiant.

"Hart, I don't have any doubt that I will prevail tonight and send your creepy side kick packing. 'Cause I feel good." He dances down towards the ring.

Loser Leave Town for the MA TV Title. Winner is first person to escape the cage and make it to the floor.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/GreatKabuki2.jpghttp://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/NWATelevision.jpg v http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/JimmyValiant2-1.jpg

The Great Kabuki MA TV Champ w/Gary Hart v Jimmy Valiant

Great match that lifted the crowd. Very open match, back and forth action with no one gaining a measurable advantage. Valiant catches Kabuki in the sleeper and puts him down to the mat. He heads for the door. As he opens it and starts to climb thru the ropes; out runs the Magic Dragon. He pushes the door shut on Valiant causing him to fall back into the ring where Kabuki is up and waiting. Bam heart kick. Valiant goes down in a heap in the corner opposite the door. Kabuki swoops in and continues to kick Valiant down. Bugsy McGraw has made his way down to ringside and is hammering away on The Magic Dragon. As Kabuki tries to exit the cage thru the door McGraw holds the door shut preventing him from escaping. Valiant knees him from behind. They continue to go at it. Valiant throws Kabuki into the cage head first. He then heads for the door. McGraw swings the door open for the escape. As Valiant reaches the door the crowd is going wild. He reaches the opening and slam. McGraw suddenly slams the door in his face. He proceeds to put a chain around the door preventing Valiant form opening it. As Valiant screams at his friend to let him out. Kabuki is scaling the opposite side of the cage. Valiant is frantic. Jerking on the door to no avail. Kabuki reaches the top and is over. Valiant turns to realize that he has no chance to catch him. He hurls himself into the side of the cage. Knocking Kabuki off balance. He teeters on the top looking as if he will fall back in, then he shifts his weight and over the side and to the floor he falls, winning the match at 8:39, retaining the title and forcing a 90 day exile for Valiant. The crowd realizing that the fan favorite has just been exiled because of his 'friends' interference starts throwing garbage into the ring. Hart and the Magic Dragon help Kabuki to his feet. McGraw takes the chain off the door and the three of them enter the cage fighting Valiant as they enter. Hart relocks the door. The three new alliance members beat Valiant down. They continually hurl him into the side of the cage busting him wide open. The Varsity Boys(Rotundo and Rheingans) run down they try to enter the door but find it locked. In the ring Hart is mocking them. Kabuki and then the Magic Dragon both spray the green mist into Valiant's face. He is a bloody mess. Rheingans reaches the top of the cage and is over and in. The three villains swarm on him like a bunch of animals. Beating him to the mat. Rotundo is scaling the cage on the opposite side. Kabuki dropkicks the side of the cage knocking Rotundo back to the floor. The Briscos and Mark Youngblood run down to ringside. Jack carrying a set of bolt cutters. They go to work on the door. Finally the chain has been cut. They enter the ring and fight off Kabuki, Magic Dragon and Bugsy Mcgraw. Finally they clear the ring. The crowd boos the four of them unmercifully all the way up the ramp. Both Valiant and Rheingans require medical attention. Valiant is taken by stretcher from the ring and Rheingans is helped to the back. B+

Video is played showing the events that have led to this match.

Interview with The Funks.

DFJ "Terry, we are on the verge of winning the World Tag titles for the first time."

TF "That's right Dory. If you feel like I do it's time to whip these boys tails West Texas style and take them belts!"

Interview with Steamboat and Youngblood.

RS "Funks, we've worked too hard to get these belts, just to have you breeze into town and take them from us. If you want them, you'll have to take them!"

Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood NWA World Tag Team Champs v Terry Funk and Dory Funk Jr

This match lifted the crowd! These four put a good show. After a hard fought match with plenty of action both ways, Steamboat catches Dory with a flying body press to get the pin fall at 15:31 to retain the titles. The performance of Terry Funk stood out as being good. Steamboat looked good out there. Dory is improving in performance skills. B

Video is shown of the Rich/Sawyer storyline.

Interview with Tommy Rich.

"Sawyer, I've got you in the cage tonight. Right where I want you. "

Interview with Buzz Sawyer.

"Yeah you've got me. Or do I have you? Sometimes you need to watch what you wish for. Tommy, man I'm going to make you bleed, alot. Haha hahaha."

Tommy Rich v Buzz Sawyer

Absolutely brutal. These put on a classic. An excellent match that lifted the crowd. These two hurled each other into the cage and beat each other to a bloody pulp. Sawyer finally scored the win at 20:39 by pin fall after a running power slam. A*

Video of the Wahoo/Valentine storyline.

Interview with Greg Valentine.

"Wahoo, you have held that belt long enough. Tonight, I take my belt back."

Interview with Wahoo McDaniel.

"Valentine, we go back a long way. Words are cheap. You can make all the claims you want. But saying you're going to take the belt, and doing it are two different things."

For the United States Hwt Title

Wahoo McDaniel US Hwt Champ v Greg Valentine

Excellent match that lifted the crowd. These two showed off their great chemistry. Wahoo wins by submission at 17:36 with the Indian Death Lock. A*

A video is played of the Rhodes/Piper storyline.

Interview with Piper.

"Hehe hehe, Rhodes, I can't believe you were dumb enough to sign to fight me in the cage. But you did. Hehehe. Man I'm going to bust you open. Hehe. I'm going to rake your head all over the cage just like I'm grating cheese. Hehe. "

http://www.roddypiperfans.com/media/audio/Piper-%20everyone%20pays%20the%20piper.wav

Interview with Rhodes.

"Piper, maybez youz arez thez dumb onez. Seez inside the cage, yah, canz't getz you handz on a chairz. And your buddy thez Spoilerz can't helps youz whenz I take itz toz your sorry a**!"

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/DustyRhodes.jpg v http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/RoddyPiper3.jpg

Dusty Rhodes v Roddy Piper

A great match(by far the best one since the change from 2005), that lifted the crowd. These guys truly act as if they hate each other. They took turns beating on each other until Piper locked Rhodes in the sleeper and incapacitated him. He let go and Rhodes fell to a heap in the middle of the ring. He then escaped the cage to win the match at 15:24. Again the message that these two don't click. A

Video is shown highlighting the feud between Andre and Hogan.

Interview with Hogan.

http://www.wrestlingmuseum.com/sounds/realaudio/hulk0001.ram

"Andre, I know your big and your bad brother. But I'm pretty big myself. And tonight I'm gonna take it to you big man. "

Interview with Andre w Buddy Rogers.

"Hogan, you get out here and you make your claims of greatness. Well here I am. I'm not going anywhere except to the ring."

Andre the Giant v Hulk Hogan

Another excellent match that got the crowd going. Andre took advantage of Hogan's recent injury and worked over Hogan's head. After repeated slamming his head into the steel mesh, he hits the butt drop and gets the pin at 6:32. A*

A video is played of the Race/Flair storyline.

Interview with Race.

"Hey Pretty Boy. I hope you kiss you girlfriend before you come out. Because when I get thru with you, no one will want to look at you let alone kiss you. I'm prepared to do what it takes to take back possession of my World title tonight."

Interview with Ric Flair.

"Harley by God Race, WHOOOO! You come out here saying you are going to do this and you’re going to do that. Well let me tell you what's going to happen. You are going to enter the cage and then I will. Then they will lock the door. WHOOOOOO! And we will beat the living Hell out of each other all night long. WHOOOOOOO! And when I'm done kicking you a**, I'm going to leave you lying in the middle of the ring and I'm going to leave the ring and the arena with my belt. And WHOOOOOOO! I'm going to climb into my limo with a brunette, a redhead, and 3 blondes. WHOOOOOO! And then the fun will start. Cause Space Mountain will be open for business. And this ride will last all night long! WHOOOOOOO!"

Ric Flair NWA World Hwt Title v Harley Race

Excellent Main event that lifted the crowd. Another classic in this series. As both men hit all their signature spots. Race busts Flair open about 5 minutes in. Race mounts the turnbuckle to hit the diving head butt on Flair, only to have Flair roll out of the way. Flair works the legs over and hooks the figure four in. His keeps the hold on for at least 5 minutes. Race is in agony. Flair sensing he has Race where he wants him, releases the hold and heads for the door. Where he sees Terry Funk, who holds the door shut preventing Flair from escaping. But Bob Orton comes down and fights off Funk to allow Flair to escape and retain the title at 20:52. A*

Interview with Huston Hartsell

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/theoutlaw321/internet.jpg

Exclusive Interview With NWA, INC Head Booker, Huston Hartsell.

The interview takes place in an adjacent office about an hour after the conclusion of the Caged Heat PPV.

CMDRSAM(special interviewer) "Hello everyone, this is CMDRSAM, and I am here with NWA, INC head booker Huston Hartsell. We have just witnessed the PPV Caged Heat put on by the NWA.

Hello Mr. Hartsell, thank you for giving us this time."

Huston "Call me Huston."

CMDRSAM "Okay Huston, well since we are only an hour or so removed from 'Caged Heat,' I'll start by asking you your reaction to the results of the show.”

HH "I thought the show played out well. Couple of surprises there early on that should have caught everyone off guard. We had Stan showing up to help out his old friend Ole Anderson. The surprising end of end of the Valiant match. Unfortunately the losers of those two matches will be forced to leave the promotion for 90 days as a result of the stipulations signed for in those matches."

CMDRSAM "Flair looked good out there. Any word on how long you are going to run with that program?"

HH (smiling) "Yes he looked good. As for your question, I can see the feud between Flair and Race lasting for awhile. They will decide that. When they settle it, it will be over. Fair enough?"

CMDR "Well let's go in this direction then if you will. Everyone knows that there was a lawsuit filed against the NWA by the WWF. The court case started and then on the second day it was suddenly dropped. Would you like to fill us in on the details of the agreement that was made to allow this to happen?"

HH "Maybe Vince got up in a good mood the second day."

CMDR "Come on Mr. Hartsell, give us something. Rumor has it that the agreement had something to do with the contracts of the Samoans and Andre the Giant."

HH "Mr. Sam I'm not at liberty to say as it was and is a legal matter."

CmDR "I'm not going to get anywhere am I?"

HH "Probably not."

CMDR "Answer me this then, did tonight mark the end of the Samoans in the NWA? Will we see Andre in a NWA promoted event again?"

HH "Persistent aren't you?"

CMDR "Yes sir that is what I get paid for."

HH " As I said earlier, I will not go into the so called 'agreement' between the WWF and ourselves. I will however answer your questions as honestly as I can. The Samoans lost a loser leave town match tonight and therefore will be barred from the promotion for 90 days."

CMDR "So you are going to stick to your storylines?"

HH (laughing) "I will say further that both Afa and Sika's contracts are up for renewal. There has been a lot of pressure exhibited on them since the Backlund, Morales, and Andre signings to commit to the WWF fulltime. The ball is in their court. We'd love for them to return after their 90 day exile. As I'm sure they would like another crack at Ole and Stan and those National Tag Titles."

CMDR "The information that I have is that the releasing of Afa and Sika from their contracts was one of three conditions that was laid down in the agreement signed with the WWF for the dismissal of the lawsuit. Do you have a direct comment to that?"

HH "I think I have already answered that question."

CMDR "What about the report that Andre was another condition? Will he be back in an NWA ring in the near future?"

HH "Of course he will. I don't know where you get your information. Andre has asked for a reduced schedule. Between his commitments here and abroad, he is feeling a little worn down. We are looking to accommodate his requests."

CMDR "I'm getting the feeling that you aren't going to answer any of my questions."

HH "I think I'm answering everything you have asked. The Samoans lost a loser leave town match there gone for 90 days. Their contracts run out during this time. They are unsigned. Will they resign? That'd be a better question for them. Andre is still under contract here. There are no plans for that to change. He may take a little time off coming up to rest up, but he will continue to work NWA events. What haven't I answered?"

CMDR "Okay, okay, I give up. Let's change gears. Will you comment on the recent bad blood backstage between you and some of the 'Georgia' guys?"

HH (laughing) "'Bad blood?' That's humorous. I'm not going to claim that there are never any problems backstage, but bad blood? Do you have a specific question that you would like to ask?"

CMDR "Thunderbolt Patterson, Tommy Rich, Jim Barnett, Paul Orndorff have all been rumored to have had it out with you. Do you think that your management style has contributed to any of these?"

HH "I'll start by saying that we have all had to go through an adjustment period since the accusation of GCW. A couple of the guys feel or have felt that they may have been lost in the shuffle. "

CMDR "So you don't feel there is a problem backstage?"

HH "Listen, any 'problem' that we have had we have dealt with. With Rich it was a matter of us running a little tighter ship then he was used to. We had an adjustment period. He adjusted well. Done everything he has been asked to do. He's a great talent and a great asset to this company. I see big things from him in the future."

CMDR "What about Barnett? Rumor has it that the whole Backlund/Morales incident was staged and pulled off by someone on the inside. Is that the reason that Barnett left the company?"

HH "I'll answer that like this; did we intentionately show the footage. No. Did someone purposefully run the tape of it? Yes. Did Jim have anything to do with it? There has been no proof of his involvement. The man told me he had nothing to do with it. And I take him at his word. Did Jim and I agree on everything? No. Did he leave because of that? You need to ask him. The reason he gave us(Jim C and I) was that he thought he was ready to step back out of the active role. But after a few months, he decided he had made a mistake. This led to him opening his on promotion. We support him in this endeavor and wish him the best of luck. This ended on good terms as far as we are concerned."

CMDR "What about Orndorff?”

HH "I don't know. You tell me. He seems very unhappy. We've talked about it. I've told him our position. I think he understands. I don't know if he's looking to go elsewhere. Again, I can only give you my side of it. He broke some of our rules, he's being punished. Enough said."

CMDR "Are you aware that he fought on Barnett's card tonight and won the Georgia Hwt Title?"

HH "Nope, wasn't aware. That may answer questions that we both have."

CMDR "Thunderbolt?"

HH (laughing) "We just going to go down the roster? Still don't know understand that one. Basically we asked him to do something and he did everything in his power not to cooperate. We felt our hand s were tied there. End of story."

CMDR "Mr. Hartsell, I won't keep you any longer. I thank you again for your time and congratulations on tonight's show. I know it's getting late but what do you have in store for the NWA fans over the next few months?"

HH "More of the same. Trying to put on the best wrestling shows possible. We have a great interpromotional PPV planned for March, and of course the Crockett Cup in April. We've got big plans so stay tuned. we think that everyone will enjoy it. Thank you CMDRSAM."

Wed 4:00AM Week 1 March 83

The phone rang at Huston's house in North Carolina. It was 4:00 am. He had arrived home around 2:00 from NY after the MACW taping.

HH "Hello.'

"You son of a bitch." Came the unmistakable voice of Vince McMahon on the other end.

HH "Vince, what time is it? What the hell do you want?"

VM "You couldn't just admit that I won and I forced you to could you?"

HH "HUh?"

VM "Had to make up some bs about contracts being up and needing time off. Couldn't just say Vince outsmarted me?"

HH "Is that what this is all about?"

VM "Yeah this is what this is all about. The Samoans are done in the NWA because I wanted it that way. Andre is going to be at my shows not your because I wanted that way. And you can't attempt to sign anyone under WWF contract for 6 months because I wanted that way. But you couldn't just admit that could you?"

HH "I didn't say anything that wasn't true. And Andre is just for Thursdays."

VM "I wanted the credit for winning. And what is that part about Andre? Come Wrestlemania, I'll be back on top and I'll see you unemployeed!"

HH "Check the PPV schedule Vince." And he hung up the phone.
