Robert Downey Jr, as much as I like him, seems about as un-Sherlock Holmes a guy as you can get. Would someone who is a Sherlock Holmes fan enjoy this or is it another case of Americans taking something important to the British and pooping all over it?

British director. It's a decent film...some of it is actually closer to the source material than most of the other screen adaptations of Holmes.

I've read half of the complete sherlocks holmes collection and thought that the source material was considered heavily.

You have to give it 'till the very end, but you should know what I"m talking about by the time credits role.

The film is far more "action" oriented then a typical sherlock holmes story, but then again it's a movie. People complain about the Star Trek film for the exact same thing (too much explosion for star trek!)

Anyway, I don't want to give it away but there are certain key things that made me think that both Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. did some considerable research on the source material.

Then again, I'm a guy ritchie fanboi, so /shrug.

And yes, the director is british and knows his stuff. If you're not familiar he did Snatch and Lock Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, married madonna and made a string of bad movies (that I enjoyed because i'm a fanboi) etc. etc.

Others have said this so it isn't an original thought, but the story and character arc are pretty similiar to the Wrestler. If you enjoyed that story and like Jeff Bridges you should like Crazy Heart.

Anybody seen Crazy Heart? That film looks bad ass, with Jeff Bridges what else do you expect I suppose.:D

Yes I saw Crazy Heart, and yes it was similar to the Wrestler. I found it to be really good, and I had to be talked into seeing it. I wanted to see Lovely Bones.

Last film I saw at the cinema was Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief with my six year old son. I enjoyed it. For a kids film it was fun. It was also cool that my son recognised it as I've been reading it to him at bed time. I prefered this to Christ Colubus' Harry Potter films.

Saw Wolfman before that. It had everything going for it: strong cast; Rick Baker on effects - it's the best looking werewolf since An American Werewolf in London! Unfortunatly the film was boring. The best bit was in the asylum in London... the rest was pants.

Somebody brought me The Negotiator on Blu Ray yesterday. I haven't seen that since it firt came out in the late 90's. Going to watch that tonight. I hope it's as good as I remember it.

Might go to the cinema on Friday and see Solomon Kane. Looks good: plus my girlfriend likes the actor, so we've both got a reason to see it.

I saw Wolfman. It was indeed pretty boring but damn Hopkins still has that sly humour thing going for him. There's a few parts where he left me in stitches and I'm sure he wasn't meant to but meh. I also have a bit of a mancrush for Benecio so that got me through.

The next movie I hope to see is Shutter Island. I've built it up in my mind cause I'm a bit of a Leo fanboy so hopefully it doesn't fall flat.

The last movie I've seen though was Chasing Amy. It was on one of my movie channels and it's as good the fourth time as it is the first. Now THAT is Jason Lee's best performance I believe.

And it's probably Jason Lee's best performance....Vanilla Sky and Mumford rank in his top 3 too even though they are both lesser parts.

I guess I'll throw up mine from last night.

Up - Pixar is always worth seeing. Notch below Toy Story 1 & 2, Incredibles, and Wall-E but still very good.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs - One of my favorite books as a kid, wasn't as butchered as I thought it would be. I thought the adaption of this was better than Where The Wild Things Are and Fantastic Mr. Fox, two of my other adapted childhood stories from around the same time.

Big Fan - Heard a lot of good things about it, but didn't hit me as much as it did other people I know that have seen it. A part or two rang a little too close to home as a sports fan....but this was probably the best sports movie of last year....anyone know a better one?

I enjoyed Shutter Island a lot: it's well-crafted and a mind-**** in the best possible way.

I know Up is on everybody's top movies of the year list but I found it to be probably the worst thing Pixar's done other than Cars. The montage at the opening was cloyingingly sentimental and the tone was all over the place throughout the film. Pixar's been making movies for adults disguised as kid's movies for awhile, but this was probably the worst offender in terms of some of the adult themes, but then for some reason it also had a bunch of dogs acting like dogs jokes. I know it's going to win best animated feature, but I wouldn't put it in my top 3, with Coraline, Mr. Fox, and the Princess and the Frog in front of it.

Also I know the Book of Eli may look like the Road visually since it has the whole post-apocalyptic look, but I think it's selling the Road short to just say it's like Eli but bleaker. I don't have the same expectations from a Hughes brothers movie starring Denzel that I do from Viggo Mortenson and the director of the Proposition. I expect one to be mildly entertaining and I expect one to be legitimately good.

Also I never saw Mumford but Jason Lee in the Incredibles and Dogma is my favorite Jason Lee.

Shutter Island still isn't out in the UK...they've been running trailers for it since the beginning of last year :( Not long to go though, and I am a fan of Scorsese and sometimes Leo. They managed not to completely screw up one of my favourite Korean movie(s) with a western adaptation, so bonus points there. Will Smith is staring in Oldboy - not holding out such high hopes for that :-p

I'm working from home today and plan on watching Black Dynamite...anyone seen that yet? It's a tribute/spoof of the Blaxploitation genre - so Grindhouse with a bit of soul...Bump 'n' Grindhouse, if you wiiillll. The story goes that 'The Man' has poisoned America's Malt Liquor supply, which as we all know is where the black man gets his power from (Seriously, that's in the synopsis). In order to stop whitey's nefarious scheme, our hero Black Dynamite has to do a whole lot of pimp-slapping, kung-fu kicking and love making. He even gets to visit the president of the USA in the 'Honkey House'. Awsome :D

Will post later and let peeps know if it's any good.

Its very faithful to the source material. As for depressing, given the setting, i can see why they went for that and loved every minute of it.. Just watched Slumdog Millionaire. It was not what I expected and I enjoyed it. I usually like Danny Boyle films, so I shouldn't have been that surprised. I guess the hype machine got me wary.

A good film to watch is London to Brighton. I can't say I enjoyed it - it's not that kind of film - but it was brilliant. Brutal, but brilliant.
