I love how Django has caused Spike Lee to come back from wherever the heck he has been. If I was a betting man, I would bet he is not even offended by Django, he is just using it as a way to get back into the mainstream again.

It must be tough for him now that Reggie Miller is retired and he has not made a good or relevant movie since Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X (Both of which were great movies I might add.).

So I watched the original Dirty Harry movie and I also watched the Dead Pool (The last in the Dirty Harry series.) the other day. Dirty Harry has held up nicely even though it has been out for over forty years. Dead Pool…not so much.

I remember when I was a kid and Dead Pool came out and I saw it with my father. I loved the movie, I mean for a ten year old boy what is there not to love about a remote control car with an explosive in it.

However, watching it the other day made me realize just how bad it was. The acting was not bad (I believe it was one of Jim Carrey’s first movies), I just felt that the pacing of the movie was rushed. The plot was not all that great either.

I find it so weird how movies of your youth that you held in such high regard, pretty much suck when you view them as an adult. Boys in the Hood, I am looking at you when I make that comment (What a terrible movie that was.).

I saw a video of Clint Eastwood not too long ago and he said people still ask him when he is gonna make another Dirty Harry.

His response...

at my age what would I be doing in the movie?

Dirty Harry... retired, fly fishing in the woods.... with a .44 magnum for back-up?

Clint turns 83 in March.

Went and saw Texas Chainsaw 3D today. I freaking loved it. Putting spoilers in white below, but man, the female lead is gorgeous. I don't usually go for super skinny chicks, but wow.

I actually liked them turning Leatherface into a kind of heroic character towards the end. They did take a lot of liberties, mainly trying to pass off how the original took place in the 70s and this is supposed to be 20 years later, but somehow takes place in 2012.

It's already made back it's budget, so I'm pretty pleased about that.

Yeah I just saw it tonight as well and man did it suck. Such a shame because I liked the original one from the early 1970's.

I even liked the two remakes they did recently, but this was a stinker. Also, when is this whole 3D thing going to end, I know it runs in cycles as it was popular in the 50's, came back in the early to mid 80's, and it seems to be popular again.

The thing is, you can polish a turd but at the end of the day it is still going to be a turd.

I wanted to see the movie but my fiance told me she wouldn't watch the 3D version. I thought, "what's the point? I've already seen the damn thing so many times, being 3D is the part that seemed appealing." Oh well, I don't get to the movies often enough these days anyway.

I knew this one wasn't going to be one that everyone cared for, but I thought it was highly enjoyable.

Different strokes and all that :p

It's not a 3D version of the original - it's a sequel.

It's also rubbish. Golden rule: If a movie is not screened for press prior to release, there is a very good reason for that.

Something that totally went under my radar until recently - Spike Lee is now directing the Oldboy remake.

Last I'd read about it, Spielberg was directing an adaptation of the original Manga (rather than a remake of the Korean film), with Will Smith in the lead roll. I think my brain black it out at that point.

Anyway, Lee is now at the helm, it's a remake of the movie, not the Manga and the lead roles are Josh Brolin and Sharlto Copley.

Oldboy is one of my favourite movies...I'm actually looking forward to what this lot do with it.

I like when my favorite flicks get remade too, BH. The common mentality is to reject the remake and get all mad. But I never got that. You'll always have the original. I'm a massive Arnold fan and other Arnold fans were pissed when they announced a Total Recall remake. It turned out to be not-so-great, but in the end, I STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL! No big deal! I have Total Recall with Arnold on my Blu-Ray shelf whenever I want to see it, the less-than-stellar remake did nothing to make me love it less.

One remake of a favorite is Halloween. I love the original. I just think it's a masterpiece in simplicity. It's a small movie with only a handful of characters and it's extremely focused on playing with your head. It's absolutely brilliant, especially when you consider how original and different it was for it's time. The Rob Zombie remake was totally different, adding new complexities to the character of Micheal Myers and really playing with lore. I loved what he did. What Carpenter did with subtlety and suspense Zombie did with brutality and sheer badassery. And again, me liking the remake did nothing to lower my affection for the original.

I personally loved Oldboy and can't wait to see what Spike does with it either way. I like Spike's smaller films as I think his bigger movies tend to be boring and lack his creative spark when it comes to dialogue and message. But still, love him or hate him Spike LEe is one of the greatest directors of his generation and giving him two great actors to play with int hat universe... easily worth my ticket money.

I'm watching T2: Judgment Day for the thousandth time. So good.

Confirmed. We'd be best friends IRL. I could watch it 1000 more and love it each time.

True story: when I was 14 I got the VHS tape for my birthday. I watched it every day that summer. I'm serious. I could literally play that movie from front to back in my brain and not miss a line.

I don't think I wasted one minute of that summer.

Watched The Hobbit in 3D 48fps LieMax in Australia. The movie was a little long but it was really fun. The 48fps 3D was incredible, better than Avatar and Hugo. My eyes adjusted after 5 minutes and it didn't look like a soap opera. All the haters (especially the scathing critics) can suck it :p

I was originally going to marathon the Mission Impossible movies since they added Ghost Protocol to Netflix, but then I saw they added T2 and it's one of my all time favorite movies so that took precedent :o

I just watched Ghost Protocol the other night and I really liked it. Not the biggest Tom Cruise fan but he does a good job in the Ethan Hunt role. As for T2 I started watching it again last night at work (which is when I do all my Netflix watching). Not sure how many times I have seen it now but it is still one of my favorite movies of all time.

 • 2 months later...

I've been avoiding watching The Prophecy, because I loved it as a kid(I was 8 when it came out).

I finally got around to watching it and I'm about half way through and I'm honestly shocked at how much I'm enjoying it. There are aspects of it I didn't pick up on as a kid obviously. I'm not religious at all, but religion can be awesome story telling tools.

Elias Koteas(Casey frikkin Jones) is actually a good actor and I'm kind of confused as to why he didn't end up having a solid career.

Wait what? Elias Koteas has had an extremely solid career. He's never been a "movie star," but I've seen him in a ton of good movies, from Shutter Island to Zodiac to the Thin Red Line. And who could forget "Turtles in Time"? I'm sure he still does stage and regional stuff in Canada that I don't know anything about, but it's not like he's struggled for a career.

I watched Street Fighter: the Legend of Chun Li. My favorite parts? Liu Kang being her mentor, and the Iron Man-y "hey look there's other Street Fighters out there. Let's go meet this "Ryu" character" ending, as though they were going to build up a big shared universe of ridiculous Street Fighter movies leading into a big epic "Super Street Fighter" film. Also I cracked up at every thing Chris Klein said or did. It's like the movie desperately wanted 1990's Keanu Reeves, so Klein just watched Kathyrn Bigelow's classic "Point Break" 10 times and then winged it. He ends up somewhere between Keanu and Christian Slater, but is way worse than either since it feels like he's doing an impression.

On the Elias Koteas subject, I just recently re-watched The Turtles live action movie. The first one is SOOO close to being a good film lol. Considering the time period it was made, and the fact that cheesy lines were so commonplace, it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, having not seen it since I was a kid.

I am reading the IDW comics right now and they're very very good. Still acceptable for children yet generally written for an older audience who remember the characters from the cartoon. It's serious without being TOO serious. I wonder if Bey's film will be close to the new comics at all? I have no clue but they'll get my dollars.

Anyone seen any good horror movies that were made relatively recently? I just watched Fourth Kind (kinda cool) and Sinister (liked it alot). Kinda looking for stuff that not torture porn.

The Collection.

It does have some super gnarly violence, but it's not torture porn. Just brutality. It's just as good as the first movie.

I've been meaning to check out the Fourth Kind and Sinister. I thought Dark Skies looked pretty solid, but am waiting until blu ray or Netflix for that.

Thats the Ty West movie right? I like his stuff.

I'm simply sick of torture porn. It's a genre that once you've seen enough of it, you've seen it all. There's no real suspense in it or anything. Even Rob Zombie's films, which I do like, are very thin on suspense and high on gore. I work in a hospital and see my fair share of blood and guts every day. You gotta deliver a cool story or some interesting characters to get me hooked.
