"The League"--Seasons Three and Four

Recommended Posts

Giving folks a heads-up that I intend to add an additional segment to the show this week.

That's the only hint I'm giving you, feel free to speculate on what it might be. (And note that I have yet to do any database editing/match running for this week, so you might as well exclude that from your lists of possibilities.)

I'm gonna guess... it's Scorpion declaring his undying love for Maxx Skabb.

And then them two getting it on for thirty minutes.

Yeah, like Maxx has the stamina to go 30 minutes. More like 30 seconds ... zing!

Oh, wait ...

Besides, what with the streak, and Maxx's entrance, I can only assume we're going to meet the security guard, Ralphus. :D

Also, I will likely hold off Beyond Ringside until Thursday. I intend to have pages updated Tuesday night after the show is posted, a day ahead of time so I can focus on figuring out playoff scenarios for any divisions still in contention, as well as the three wild card spots--those three spots will likely be the cause of my headaches. ;)

As it stands, right now there are 1,024 scenarios that can happen in the last week before bringing in match grades to the equation. Wednesday will likely be the bulk of the time I spend getting the playoff picture into focus, hence a Thursday tentative timeline for Beyond Ringside.

Public Service Announcement:

Show might be delayed a couple of hours. I am currently sitting at the hospital with MLT; she has yet to be evaluated, etc. Laptop is within reach so I can work on the show and pages in the interim. Absolutely no idea on when we're getting out of here.

Will post show when able.

Hope everything goes okay. Hospitalization is generally the suck, emergency rooms doubly so.

Of course, she seems okay enough to post, so I'm figuring it isn't a gunshot wound.

A stabbing at most, then.

Pssht please I could take two gunshots and still post!! :p

Nothing too bad. Just don't know what's going on yet...

It's 11:30 pm Eastern US as I post this. We got out of the hospital an hour ago. Verdict is bronchitis, maybe something else on top of that, not sure. As all tests came back negative. MLT has a bruise that resembles the Dark Mark from Harry Potter on the inside of her right forearm due to a nurse. I'll let her tell that one if she chooses to.

I am at work posting this via phone, as I did not want to chance driving home tired this late at night and work was about 70% closer. Spending night at office due to this.

Thus, show will be posted tomorrow, as well as pages updated when I get home and thus can avoid Big Brother watching my every online move. Show is about 95% complete as I type this.

I apologize for the delay.

THE LEAGUE: SEASON FOUR, WEEK THIRTEEN

With an explosion of pyro befitting the tradition of Japanese children's action shows, The League opens its penultimate regular season week with two divisions still to be determined, three wild card spots to be decided, and three hours to further clarify the playoff picture before heading into the final week of the season. As the capacity crowd roar in anticipation, we cut to ringside and our three-person announce team.

Bob Sinclair: Hello, everyone, and welcome to week thirteen! Bob Sinclair here at ringside, alongside Tori Montgomery and Frankie Garnett. The playoffs are almost upon us; what sort of determination should we be expecting tonight?

Tori Montgomery: It's real simple, Bob. For those who are already in the postseason—The Phoenix, Robbie Maynard, and our defending champion, Sean—it will be to work towards securing the #1 seed and getting to face the third wild card participant in the opening round of the playoffs. For those on the cusp, it becomes nearly a "win at any cost" mentality.

Frankie Garnett: And that's what I like to see. If you're going to earn your spot, then you'd best do it by taking it out of the hands of your opponents.

Bob Sinclair: We're chock full of action tonight, folks, so we're not going to waste any time. Let's head to the ring, and Amelia Williams to get our show underway!

Scott Stevens (4-8, 15%) vs. Jack Lightning (3-9, 22%)

The lights in the arena go pitch black, as red lasers and spotlights light up the area. The video screen lights up and flashes across the screen, "Nothing survives my sting!" The crowd starts booing as "End of Days" by Emphatic hits the speakers, and the man in question appears from the back and stops on the stage. As "The Venomous One" stares down his opponent with an icy glare he points to them, then he makes the throat slash gesture to them before he begins walking to the ring, being pelted by trash the whole way.

Amelia Williams: Our opening contest of the evening is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from Houston, Texas, weighing 265 pounds... "The Scorpion" Scott Stevens!

Bob Sinclair: Stevens enters tonight with no chance of evening his record by season's end. This will be his first losing season since joining The League, and you can be assured that he's looking to avoid a 10-loss season.

Frankie Garnett: There's no way that Stevens loses ten.

Tori Montgomery: Frankie, you do realize who he faces in the regular season finale, right?

Frankie Garnett: And that's why I say there's no way he'll get to 10 losses!

Bob Sinclair: Oh, boy....

Linkin Park's "New Divide" hits the speakers as the first Canadian to enter The League emerges from the back, looking surprisingly at ease as he steps onto the ring apron and leaps over the top rope. Climbing onto the turnbuckles, he raises an arm in the air and drinks in the cheers of the crowd before dropping back to the mat and preparing for his match.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from London, Ontario, weighing 233 pounds...Jack Lightning!

Bob Sinclair: Lightning has struggled to find his niche in his rookie season, though the Canadian's shown a lot of potential this season.

Tori Montgomery: Should he return next season, and depending on the divisional layout, he could be a surprise contender.

Frankie Garnett: And I could grow wings and fly to Boston, Tori. Face it, the kid's career is going nowhere.

Frankie Garnett: There you go, Scorp! Make this kid pay!

Tori Montgomery: It makes me wonder....

Bob Sinclair: Why's that, Tori?

Tori Montgomery: Stevens is a doormat all season, yet comes alive in time to attempt to play spoiler? That strike you as odd, Bob?

Frankie Garnett: What are you accusing him of, Tori?

Tori Montgomery: Nothing. Just pointing out something interesting. Focus on the match, Frankie.

Amelia Williams: Here is your winner, at a time of twelve minutes even...Scott Stevens!

Frankie Garnett: Scorpion pulls out another one!

Tori Montgomery: Again, something smells fishy about this.

Frankie Garnett: Could be that you need deodorant, Tori.

Tori Montgomery: Why I ought to—

Bob Sinclair: Settle down, Tori. It's not worth your job.

Tori Montgomery: (growls)

The Phoenix (9-3, 15%) vs. SGRaaize (5-7, 15%)

A Portugesa hits the speakers to a rousing chorus of jeers as the Tron displays the national flag of Portugal. Emerging from the entryway, he turns to salute his homeland's flag before calmly walking to the ring, ignoring the fans as he slides into the ring and bounces off the ropes a couple of times to stretch.

Amelia Williams: This next contest is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from Torres Vedras, Portugal, weighing 231 pounds...SGRaaize!

Tori Montgomery: Raaize is someone whose status for next season is uncertain at best. He's kept to himself most of the season, and has been very tight-lipped concerning his future plans.

Frankie Garnett: If he doesn't want to stay, I say let him go. We'll find others just like him.

Bob Sinclair: I'm not sure about that, Frankie....

Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" hits the arena speakers as one of the original members of The League comes out, his wife in tow. He has a deadly serious look on his face as he shadowboxes on his way to the ring. As they reach ringside, she reaches up to give him a kiss on the cheek and gives him a slight shove towards the squared circle. He dives in under the bottom rope, coming to his feet with a war cry towards the heavens as he shifts his focus to the ring.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, being accompanied to the ring by Te'Snilo Bradenbury, from the End of Nowhere, weighing 337 pounds, he is the Red Division champion...this is The Phoenix!

Frankie Garnett: Otherwise known as the resident choke artist!

Tori Montgomery: Unlike your "buddy," though, Phoenix at least knows how to win a divisional title.

Bob Sinclair: His spot in the playoffs is secured; a win here would help him get to the top seed and potentially an easier match in the playoffs.

Amelia Williams: Here is your winner, at a time of six minutes and forty seconds...The Phoenix!

Tori Montgomery: The big man wasting no time tonight, putting Raaize away and sending notice that he is ready for the postseason!

Frankie Garnett: Or that he's using some sort of PEDs.

Tori Montgomery: I think Stevens is more likely to be guilty of that....

Frankie Garnett: Hey!

YELLOW DIVISION: Benjamin T. Stanton, Jr. (5-7, 9%) vs. Rannulf von Krüshengberg (4-8, 15%)

"Here Comes the Money" hits the speakers, as one of this season's rookies emerges from the back, with a beautiful woman hanging off his left arm. He pays no attention to the jeering fans, his attitude simply screaming "I'm better than you."

Amelia Williams: This bout is a Yellow Division contest scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, accompanied to the ring by Missy Callistra, from Providence, Rhode Island, weighing 224 pounds...Benjamin T. Stanton, Jr.!

Bob Sinclair: Stanton wins my vote for most surprising rookie of the season.

Tori Montgomery: It's hard to get a top-rope finisher to actually finish a match in the League, and despite this handicap Stanton has racked up five wins so far. He could be missing that one piece to get him to the next level.

Frankie Garnett: Yeah, and that piece is called talent. Face it, the kid's just lucky!

The opening to Rammstein's "Mein Teil" hits the speakers as the largest member of The League emerges, causing everyone with something that could even remotely be considered food to get away from the entranceway as quickly as possible for fear of losing their food...and at least a body part or two.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from der Schwarzwald, Deutschland, weighing 421 pounds..."Der Panzer" Rannulf von Krüshengberg!

Bob Sinclair: Given all the build-up for this man coming into the season, he's been very underwhelming in terms of in-ring results.

Frankie Garnett: So basically, you're saying that the fat guy sucks. Got it.

Tori Montgomery: That's not what he meant, Frankie....

Bob Sinclair: Uh, Frankie?

Frankie Garnett: Yeah?

Bob Sinclair: You do realize that Thor's match is next, right?

Frankie Garnett: It's fine, we have it covered.

Tori Montgomery: Dare I ask?

Frankie Garnett: It's Pizza Mask. Not someone Thor needs to sweat over. Though I will head backstage to make sure he's ready to go....

Frankie drops his headset and walks towards the back.

Tori Montgomery: Bob, do you think that he—

Bob Sinclair: Yeah, Tori. He definitely forgot. Surprised it took this long for it to happen.

Rivalry Renewed

We cut backstage, where Scott Stevens is trying to charm his way into the good graces...or is that pants?...of one of the League's backstage workers. He's seeming to have no luck, though, as the young woman simply laughs at his advances and turns away.

Scott Stevens: Your loss, lady. Not everyone gets the chance to stay up all night with The Scorpion.

???: And really, who would want to?

Scott Stevens: (Pauses) I know that voice....

Stevens slowly turns around, as does the camera, to the sight of former League member Sebastian Moore watching him with a barely-concealed smirk on his face.

Scott Stevens: The hell you want? This ain't LPW in case you didn't notice!

Sebastian Moore: I know exactly where I am, Stevens. I just came by to deliver a message.

Scott Stevens: Well? I don't have all day, numb—

Stevens doesn't even get time to finish the insult before a swift left jab catches him flush on the jaw, sending "The Texas Scorpion" to the floor. As Stevens gets back up, warily watching Moore, the former division champ speaks again.

Sebastian Moore: We still have unfinished business. I might have beaten you in LPW, but you're still around to give wrestling a bad name. Next season, I'm stopping that.

There's a bit of a pause before a mixed reaction hits the arena, as they take in what they just heard.

Sebastian Moore: Make your peace while you can, Stevens. This time, there will be no LPW committee to stop me from beating you into a pulp!

With one last sneer, Moore backs out of the camera shot as Stevens looks incredulously in the direction that Moore just left.

Bob Sinclair: Sebastian Moore...returning to the League?! This is unprecedented, Tori!

Tori Montgomery: Something tells me he's not the only one, though. I keep hearing rumors that another League veteran will be returning next season, though I've yet to personally confirm that rumor. I'm hoping to have something definite by next week, though!

Pizza Mask III (5-7, 17%) vs. Thor Hammerskald (7-5, 19%)

The theme to Samurai Pizza Cats, of all things, hits as Pizza Mask comes out on a scooter, with a pizza box strapped to the back, wearing his black polo shirt covered by a red t-shirt that simply says "You Can't Avoid the Noidsault!", and khaki pants, hopping off the scooter and unstrapping the pizza box, holding it up to the screen to show that it reads "Pain Pizza! Now With 100% Real Cheese!" before he heads to the ring. The thing that's different about his ensemble this week is that instead of his usual helmet, he appears to be wearing a yellow football helmet—the effect of which is largely lost on the Japanese fans. As he enters the ring itself, he pulls off the helmet and then the Noidsault T-shirt, tossing the shirt into the crowd before getting ready for the match.

Amelia Williams: This match is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from Your Friendly Neighborhood Pizzeria, weighing 199 pounds...Pizza Mask III!

Bob Sinclair: Tori, please tell me I'm seeing things. Was he really wearing a...?

Tori Montgomery: Yes, Bob. That's a Green Bay Packers helmet.

Amon Amarth's "Death in Fire" hits the speakers, to a decent ovation he emerges from backstage, looking every bit the part of a Viking warrior as he strides to the ring with a determined look on his face...and scattering some of the fans away from the entrance ramp as he turns to glare at them. Behind him, his manager/League color commentator can be see giving him encouragement as the Viking enters the confines of the squared circle, nearly frothing at the mouth at the sight of that hated green-and-gold helmet worn to the ring by his opponent.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, being accompanied to the ring by Frankie Garnett, from Oslo, Norway, weighing 310 pounds...Thor Hammerskald!

Bob Sinclair: To say that Thor looks angry is a bit of an understatement!

Tori Montgomery: If Pizza Mask manages to walk out of Naruto tonight, it will be a damn miracle, Bob!

BLUE DIVISION: Ian Carlisle (2-10, 15%) vs. Dante Lorenzo (7-5, 14%)

Three Days Grace's "Riot" hits the speakers to a chorus of jeers as the first Italian-born member of The League emerges from the back, ignoring the crowd in the arena as he mentally prepares for his upcoming match. Reaching the ring, he climbs up the steps and enters between the ropes, his face never losing a look of confident indifference.

Amelia Williams: This bout is scheduled for one fall in the Blue Division! Introducing first, from Florence, Italy, weighing 291 pounds...Dante Lorenzo!

Bob Sinclair: Near the top of this season's rookie class, Lorenzo finds himself with a chance to win the Blue Division before all is said and done, Tori.

Tori Montgomery: That remains to be seen, Bob, but Lorenzo is certainly in position to make a run!

"Not a Stranger to the Danger" blares through the arena as one of last season's rookies steps into the arena, a look of determination on his face. A moment later, he sprints towards the ring, sliding in under the bottom rope and heading to a corner to appeal to the fans.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from Blackpool, England, weighing 222 pounds...Ian Carlisle!

Bob Sinclair: I suppose the one saving grace for Carlisle this season is that he's not going to be tied for worst seasonal record in League history.

Tori Montgomery: Um... (pauses a minute) From what I can tell, next week's match between Triumph and Thor will determine the division. A Triumph win gives him the outright title at 10-4 to Thor's 8-6. A Thor win gives Hammerskald the division title by way of head-to-head tiebreaker, as Thor will have swept the season series with Triumph.

Bob Sinclair: Nuclear might have just saved his season with that win!

YELLOW DIVISION: Robbie Maynard (9-3, 15%) vs. Tarik Nolan (6-6, 15%)

"Regulate" hits the speakers, immediately drawing the ire of the crowd as a large figure stands in the entryway, backlit by a clear spotlight. Pyro explodes on the stage, causing the light to shut off as the figure finally emerges onto the stage proper. Laughing at the boos hurled in his direction, he takes his time walking to the ring and subsequently entering it for his next match.

Amelia Williams: This is a Yellow Division contest scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from Shreveport, Louisiana, weighing 292 pounds...Tarik Nolan!

Bob Sinclair: Much like Nuclear, Nolan's only shot for the playoffs is through the wild card.

Tori Montgomery: He'll need a bit more help, being a match behind Templeton after Nuclear's big win just moments ago.

Frankie Garnett: More than likely, he's done. Call it a wrap, folks. His season is over.

The opening riffs of Metallica's "Master of Puppets" hits the speakers, drawing a mixed reaction from the crowd as one of the League's initial playoff wrestlers emerges from the stage, bathed in a blue light shining beneath him. After pausing to mentally prepare himself, he walks to the ring, his eyes never leaving the squared circle as he climbs onto the apron and ducks between the ropes.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from Liverpool, England, weighing 251 pounds, he is the Yellow Division champion...Robbie Maynard!

Frankie Garnett: I'll admit it; this guy worries me coming into the playoffs. He might not have had much luck in the past, but the way he's put this season together gives me cause for concern.

Bob Sinclair: Enough to where you're going to bet on him?

Frankie Garnett: Hell no! I don't want to get fired for betting on matches I may have a part in! I'm making too much here to risk that!

Tori Montgomery: A sense of self-preservation, too? Now I'm truly surprised.

Maxx Skabb (6-6, 15%) vs. Master Imoka (6-6, 14%)

Slayer's "Angel of Death" blasts from the arena speakers as one of this season's rookies emerges from the back, staring a hole through the ring as if by doing so, he can change it to his preferred medium of a martial arts mat. As he gets to ringside, he quickly lashes out and kicks the top half of the steel steps off the bottom half, snarling as he slides into the ring and stands motionless, waiting for the bell to sound.

Amelia Williams: This bout is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from the Isle of Samoa, weighing 214 pounds...Master Imoka!

Bob Sinclair: This match is important for both men. The winner keeps a wild card hope alive, the loser is likely eliminated!

Frankie Garnett: There's no participation trophies, Tori! It's put up or shut up time!

Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare" blares throughout the arena as spotlights begin to pan over the audience, as if looking for someone. A dim red light shines on the entryway, revealing a hulking figure making his way to ringside, with two more men hiding just at the fringes of the spotlight, their eyes never leaving the form of the big man. As the refrain hits, the spotlights immediately focus on him as white strobe lights flash on the entrance stage. He slides under the bottom rope, his orange jumpsuit a stark contrast to most of the clothing in the audience as the song fades into silence.

As she stands, she proceeds to the corner nearest the announce table, hands thrown in the air as the soaks in the crowd reaction while her manager stands outside, also applauding her client.

Amelia Williams: This is our main event of the evening, scheduled for one fall in the Blue Division! Introducing first, accompanied to the ring by Jayde, from Aberdeen, Scotland, weighing 137 pounds...Diamond!

Tori Montgomery: With Lorenzo's win earlier, that eliminates Diamond from the divisional title hunt. A wild card is still within the realm of possibility—

Frankie Garnett: No way! She has a lower divisional record than most of the wild card participants; there's no way she makes it!

Bob Sinclair: We'll see, Frankie.

So, idea: either this week or after next, we should do a breakdown of "strength of schedule", ranking everyone based on their opponents' combined W/L records. Heck, I might do that. It'd be awesome to see if anyone maybe managed to slide into the playoffs based off of having a lot of weaker competition (or missed the playoffs and had a brutal schedule... or MADE the playoffs with a even more brutal schedule.)
