As you can probably tell, its not fully finished yet, but shows what DAZ can do for the game quickly

This is not something I made for this game, rather an image I made a while back as an experiment with water effects.

Yay. Superheroes/villains.

Dude that so rocks.

Lots of great work in the thread thus far, but this might be my favourite. Crisp. Clear. Inventive. Really nice special effect.

Started about half a dozen characters last night, but I work slow.

Sorry to repost, but could I get an opinion on this render? I don't mind being told it's rubbish or whatever, just wanna know is I've gone overboard on the 'comicization' of it :D

For me personally, I don't think the cartoonisation you have added is doing the render any justice. Perhaps alter the camera angle and put a simpler background. It's not bad at all though. :)

.... Personally, and I might be TOTALLY alone in this, but myself, personally....

We have all this talent making renders, and although I don't mind the "Cartoony" effects or what have you, I definately prefer the "realistic" types.... Not saying people have to look realistic, big heads, big chins, big muscles, and whatever else (Exaggerated contrast) people might think of, for this is what superhero stuff is made of, but I'm talking about the renders themselves.

For Example (exagerated example): I prefer this

Over this

But don't mind this:

I might be alone in this, and if so then definately carry on. IF I'm not though, perhaps other's might like to speak out as well.

For what it's worth I completely agree with you, I don't think that the cartoon effects really improve/add that much to them. However loving some of these renders so far and am very excited about this. :)

I'm with you on this. I don't think the cartoon effects benefit the renders at all. Especially not the cartoon effect from Daz. It doesn't really make the renders look like comic book characters, it just makes them look weird.

Which of these two renders do you guys prefer?

I like the 1st one. The less grainy looking one.

These renders are great! Can't wait to find out more about this game!

You know, I actually agree.. with the examples you posted anyhow. For me, it's a matter of getting the right balance.

And to a certain extent, that Superman render has quite a painterly effect to it (look at the hands for example). The contrasts of the shadows on his outfit is also edging towards that cel-shaded look... although that's just a matter of evocative lighting; not something that's necessarily owned by cartoons or 3D rendering.

I suppose at the end of the day it won't matter too much, since the amount of daz artists we have on these boards will ensure that there's plenty of different styles to go around :)

I think Adam will set what it should be like, but I agree with the posts 3 above this

LoNdOn I like them both I can't choose!

The first image is just a regular render on a background. The second is the same image after being sharpened.

Try messing with Contrast and Brightness, I think you will get what your looking for that way.

The sharpening tool always gives us that light where it pulls away from the image slightly (to sharpen it up), which over exaggerates things a little much (unless the image is slightly blurry). But I do think you will achieve what your looking for with Contrast and Brightness (and if that dulls it to much, try adding a little color to it).

Just to add to that, the Levels tool also does a similar thing. Ctrl-L will bring up the levels, showing a graph that indicates how much dark and light is in the picture. Dragging the arrows one way or the other will create stronger contrasts as well as crush the shadows (or highlights) together. Not sure if it'll help you achieve the look you're aiming for in this case, but it's a really quick way to make an image pop (that's just general advice for any picture too, not just 3d renderings)

Fair point on the cartoon effect. Last night I felt it looked amazing, this morning not so much :( Hate it what that happens with renders

If I can make a suggestion, we should all decide on a certain style for the renders. I'm not saying the lighting etc has to be exactly the same for every render, but the game will graphically suffer if there isn't some sort of consistency with the effects used.

Here's what I propose - we take one render, and display him in a variety of ways using different lighting and postwork for each. We then decide which style looks best and we can work towards that (although obviously the renderer would get a large degree of artistic freedom)

Not too sure how well this would work to be honest. I think it would be quite good if there were a variety of styles present as it will give a more in-depth feel. If all the renders have a similar look, to me, it would be a tad unfortunate. Not every comic book is drawn with the same strokes after all.

Also, considering that the artists are working for free (assumption here), we wouldn't want to force anyone to do a style they weren't happy with.

I do like the idea of trying out new styles, seeing what everyone can come up with, but if people want to share the same look it's probably a personal decision best left to the artist in question.

Just my 2c of course.

I'm not a bit fan of the comic effect. Partly because I've yet to see a method that looks consistently good. Partly because I'm not a massive comic fan to begin with.

I like my style. I can't see myself changing it unless Adam (or whoever is the main graphical guy on this game) suggests I mimic someone else. Even then, if it would cost me any money there's not a chance. Old and set in my ways.

Happens to me all that time :)

While I personally am not a fan of the cartoony style some characters would work for multiple styles ala Batman, and Superman. While if you do a character like Spawn he shouldn't be a cartoony style. So depending on the character you are making I think the style should reflect that. Or as renderers maybe you could make each render in a few different styles so people have variety.

That way if I think Horse Shoe Man should be more cartoony I can choose those renders instead of the dark realistic one.

So I say do variations of each render. Not sure how hard that is to do but I think it will be much appreciated by the players of the games including me.
