CBH: Render Thread

Recommended Posts

I didn't plan to post any renders for months, but with all the talk of different styles I thought I'd at least show examples of how I'm doing things. I stress that these are work in progress examples.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p366/celdom/Greatest%20Cape/Example3.jpghttp://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p366/celdom/Greatest%20Cape/Example2.jpg

Clearly, I haven't given them their gimmicks yet. No glowing eyes. No symbols on their chests. No weapons. I'm also starting off intentionally generic. Simple poses. Simple, traditional outfits. I want to get these techniques down before venturing into wilder ideas (of which I have some). I've got 7 of these done to this point thus far, but I'm in no hurry. With the "end of 2011" deadline, I'm happy to let my perfectionist streak take over and keep working until I get them right.

That any I'm struggling to come up with symbols.

I haven't ever seen your stuff before, over in the TEW forums, but I gotta say that I'm liking what I see. You've got a knack for guys who have eaten a few burgers in their time it seems :)

Did you do that postwork by hand or a filter? It looks very natural. And if it is a filter I'd love to know how you achieved it, since my sketch lines still look very uniform (something I've been hoping to change).

Like J Silver said, it's basically the black and white sketch filter for Poser I've used to render with, then exported it to paint shop pro and overlaid onto the original no-frills render .png (on the previous page). Then I've just altered the sketch layer opacity/pre-set so that the only the black sketch sections appear and the white pieces are transparent.

Perhaps the same could be achieved by taking a render into photoshop, changing it to black/white and finding a suitable sketch effect?

Yeah that seems to be the issue. There's sketch effects in photoshop for sure, but none of the default ones (in CS4) have given me anything as natural looking. I'm investigating some free plugins though, so that could expand my options.

I've been messing around with the new sketch effects (in Poser), from Pen and Ink, to thick and thin, etc. and it seems the original sketch effect is the best for that effect, and just doing what you did with it. I'm using PSP though, not Photoshop. I don't know why I don't use anything everyone else uses, I think it must have something to do with age.... They are all just older, lol.

And assuming there may be pictures for villians I made this guy.

Thanks mate. :) I normally keep myself to the WMMA forums (don't own TEW actually), but this seems pretty fun.

That villain is pretty top notch, Bull.

Just playing around with making things more toon-like. If artists don't like me messing with their pictures please let me know, and I'll take them down.

This is probably the look I'll go for if we're sticking to pure renders. I like the faded paper kinda thing.

Also like the bright colors and such rather than the dim stuff. I'm maybe gonna mess around with some edge finding things a bit later just to make things a bit bolder.

No one else has posted yet so just gonna edit this one! This is Jtlant's buccaneer with a bit of a subtle edge finding job:

I think it makes it pop and look more natural with the crazy saturation.

Probably my favourite comic filtering I've seen thus far (awesome render helps). 90% of the photoshopping effects I've seen have obscured the detail and made the images (in my opinion) worse. This looks pretty damned good.

Yeah, I think that last pirate there is just about perfect as far at style and colors go. Pretty much, it's leaning in the direction in the TEW10 renders we got, but less gritty. London's http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx252/LoNdOn_BeAsT/TEW%20Dynasty/HeroShowcase13.jpg is a good style too. I don't care too much for those other photoshop filters, it makes the "drawn-look" look too forced or unnatural.

Ugh, I can't figure out Daz at all. Did you guys just get presets for everything?

It's just way too different from other modeling software I used... how do I manipulate vertices and lines?

Out of curiosity, are you trying to manipulate the actual geometry? This isn't what Daz (or poser) for the most part, does. The models should already have some "morphs" included. For the most part, your going to be dealing with morphs, which does allow for some XYZ tweaking. Look under full body morphs and such.... Should be on the right side of your character pose, if I remember properly.

There is other software you can make "morph" targets with, changing the geometry as you see fit, but what Daz does is mainly use pre-existing "morphs" to manipulate the geometry.

This is for TEW, but is a great tutorial by Trell. It will pretty much catch you up on how to use the basic functions of Daz.

I really like the way that came out. Impressive.

Sadly, I need to find a way to upgrade my computer before I can use this without going nuts :(

Modeling living people in 3D was never my strong suit. Basic character design, enviroments, props, I could do fine. And it doesn't help that I'm crappy with hand-drawn stuff...

Guess I'll be using HeroDesigner for my mod :(

GIMMICK INFRINGEMENT!

Died with laughter when I read that.

Just popped in to say what great work everyone is doing so far, and if this keeps up the game will have so many fun characters to play as.
