I've enjoyed catching back up with this. It's exactly what CCW is like in my imagination but done in such a unique and interesting way. Everything from the general feel to the actual writing it all great. I think the main obstacle you've gotten over that I've never truly done in my game saves with them is make it feel like it is The DeColt show but at the same time build up plenty of other main characters well enough that it doesn't seem stale and repetitive.

^What exactly are you asking for this one? I love the character, but if you're asking whether he makes a convincing babyface, then my answer is no/boo. I'd cheer for him, but smarks cheer for good heels all the time.

And out of curiosity, IS Trent a "face" in game-term? He isn't acting like one, but if TEW sees him as a heel, the match ratings would have been brought down.

On an unrelated note, for some reason I'm longing for a possible El Eet vs Sothsayer Mask-vs-Mask feud/match some time in the future. Would be cool and hilarious if Nate Johnson of all people ends up unmasking Soothsayer.

The purpose of the question was to discover whether you thought Trent Shaffer's recent actions were that of a babyface or a heel. In the game, Trent was turned babyface during his early clashes with Poison. However, in the writings, I took for granted that you'd just accept him as a babyface, and my focus went instead into consistency of character. I didn't want to change Trent, I just wanted to use him against the bad guys. The problem being that Trent has arguably been the baddest guy in this diary thus far, and that hitting women is a lot worse than the performance-enhancing crimes of the CGC Champion. It was... a misstep. In an edgier promotion, it wouldn't have been so bad, but CGC isn't edgy. It isn't dark. It's good vs evil.

So now, I'm left with a choice. Either turn Trent Shaffer back heel, eat the in-game penalties, but keep the character creatively consistent. Or drastically change his character to fit the babyface role. Either way, I've got some rewriting to do.

Why not find a happy medium? I could easily buy Trent as a wannabe Blade who declares himself a Lone Wolf to make up for the fact nobody likes him enough to actually join forces with him. It allows the babyface clock to run out and you could easily have him just say to heck with it and turn him back heel when the time comes. Just a thought, though.

Trent Shaffer: Yay, but then I always popped for Trent.

I agree, CGC isn't a promotion about shades of grey. I assumed that Trent was in the early stages of a Face turn, and that his character would be developing into something more sympathetic. When Trent was running around trying to get help to fight in the tag team match and nobody was willing, leaving him the victim of a two-on-one beatdown, I assumed that he'd be working to prove himself a proper good guy, to avoid that happening again.

Maybe Trent gets all mopey about why nobody likes him, and some suitable Face decides to teach him a few home truths? Like, hitting women is bad and you shouldn't do it? Then Trent starts being all sincere, and gets a little bit like Angel out of Buffy, only for his inevitable turn back to Heel to come when he declares, "Ha ha, fooled you all, I was never really on your side!"

I like Trent as well. I keep waiting for someone to pop up as another one of his clan. Like he turns fully face to protect his clan from Soothsayer, a wee bit like Scorpion killing Sub Zero in a misguided revenge attempt. Except Trent is just a bastard.

Either way, I've got some rewriting to do.</div></blockquote> Personally, I think Trent's actions would have been relatively acceptable as a babyface if 1) Faith was a heel, OR 2) Faith was in the plot all along with Trent in an attempt to bring Joey back to the good side. For him to target a completely innocent character for the sole purpose of winning a title......I would have found that unacceptable for a face even in an "edgier" promotion. It'd be hard to see him as anything but a bad guy. I'm all for moral shades of grey in a guy's character, but a guy needs more than just "I'm fighting another bad guy" to be justified as a good guy, IMO.

Self, I'll post some truly immense feedback later, because right now I'm grappling with the immense stupidity of the IRL wrestling mess that occurred tonight, but I will say that Trent's character arc is perfectly acceptable, and theres really no reason to say that you screwed up, because you didn't. We all kinda know that Trent's role in this story is not as the main good guy(In which case it'd be failure, yeah), but as one of the villains like in comics that are pissed at the new bad-ass villain taking charge, and temporarily take the position of the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

He’s too stupid to die! Joey Poison is irate, trying to get into the ring. Referee Francis Long turns his back on the action to stop him.

I still don't fully know what I'm doing with him. His gimmick rating's in the toilet right now (forgot to change it when he turned) and fans don't like that I set him to turn again so soon. I don't want to pull the trigger on anything, but hopefully those penalties will hurt the scores in a semi-realistic way for now. Warren Technique vs Jack DeColt Metagaming here......I don't think Warren is over enough for Jack to be willing to do the job.

Trent's face-run definitely isn't unsalvageable. I was fine with most of what he did until the assault on Faith, which was why I suggested the possibility of Faith actually working with Trent as a willing accomplice/sacrifice to help Joey. Trent's character doesn't need to go through a drastic change. He could still be working entirely for self-serving reason (Joey turning good again deprives him of Soothsayer's help and the magic potion, which makes him an easier opponent for Trent). His interest just happens to coincide with Faith's.

It's fine for face characters to perform morally questionable acts, even in CGC. You've already done that successfully with the DeColts (well, Alex and Ricky) when they tried to use Faith to gain information about Joey. It wasn't exactly "right", but the DeColts can tell themselves that they're doing it for the greater good, and Ricky had the conscience to feel bad about it. In contrast, Trent hasn't shown any kind of difference in his attitude when he does the exact same things that were supposed to make him hated as a heel earlier (attacking women, and being nonchalant about it when he was reminded of how he slapped Jenny). Like I said, there doesn't need to be a drastic change in character, but there should be some sort of change, however minor, to indicate that the fans are supposed to react to him differently. It doesn't even have to be what the character does, but can also be what he doesn't do after the turn. Randy Orton was still a guy with uncontrollable temper who likes to hurt people when he turned face, he just stopped relying on his Legacy lackies to win matches. Eddie Guerrero as a face was still a cheating bastard who's more than happy to take shortcuts to win, but he wasn't hiding behind Chyna and letting a woman do his fighting. WWE never even indicated that he wouldn't have done the same if given the opportunity, they simply avoided that issue by not pairing him up with any women. He still doesn't play fair, but instead of being a guy who hides behind stablemates and girlfriend, he's seen as a guy who wins because he's smarter than his opponents and out-cheats them.

So yeah, I think Trent doesn't have to become some white knight or nice guy to be a face, he just needs to not be put in situations where he has to do things that are quite as despicable as he used to do as a heel.

I agree with Greylocke. Trent doesn't need to be changed back to a heel so quickly plus hving him team up with Christian Price is a great way to keep him likeable as you have the sexy antihero who does bad deeds with the nerdy loveable goody two-shoes. I'm just waiting for Trent to decide to teach Christian how to flirt at a bar somewhere or Trent deciding to make Christian a werewolf.

His name says it people. He is El Eet. Not some pretty boy with a phone, not some moose hunting psychopath and definitely not this poster's second favourite CGC worker. Technique will get his shot later when Dan DaLay screws up and Technique is there to pick up the pieces.

As for Trent, the line "A dark, brooding, sexy anti-hero" sealed it for me. Trent knows what he is and I, for one, love him for that. More sexy brooding Trent!

Trent is a character you "love to hate". He gels well with the atmosphere of the promotion, though I'm not sure I'd like the depiction in another diary. Face is a natural turn, and it's being handled well.

Woohoo! Finally caught up on the action here after a stupidly long time of not having enough time to read. First week off and I've put a good few hours into catching up, and it was worth every minute. Loving the presentation in general and all of the fun little touches that make this so awesome. And hopefully (even though I'm sure you're not paying much attention to them) BHOTWG is still doing good business with the signings I made for them.
