The Death of WCW?

Recommended Posts

Anything can and has happened in wrestling, many times in the past. During the heated days of the Monday Night Wars would you have ever though that you would see the nWo inside a WWE ring, or did you ever think you would see Vince McMahon hugging Eric Bishoff, or heck even see the WWE owning WCW and ECW. And did anyone ever think that Jeff Jarrett would open his own wrestling promotion and compete against his former employer Vince McMahon. The wrestling world is a crazy place my friend. As for Fire, I thought it was a great show and the debut of Foley is HUGE for a poor hardcore division. Yes I said it. I have never been a fan of the so-called hardcore division in the WWE or WCW. It never did anything to really wow me. Hardcore wrestling does have its place, but a whole division and belt surrounding it just does not work in my opinion. ECW was known for its harcore style, but it was all mixed in with so many other styles. Hopefully you can do something to spark my interest in this division. Foley has started that spark just to let you know.
Completely understand that, I use the older less talented guys to get the young talented in ring performers over (in other words the exact opposite of what WCW did). Problem is, I'm impatient so usually job out the old fellas who I don't like to get the youngsters over. Your way is more realistic though and less people get P.O'd. And probably more effective. I just can't wait to see a WCW that's headlined with people that can really go in the ring.
Gidday keef. It's a fine line to tread in TEW, but I'd imagine it's even more difficult in real life. In that regard, while I tend to criticise Eric Bischoff a lot he probably had a difficult job man-managing that particular aspect of it. I think in some respects that's the reason behind Vince McMahon's success, he can generally mould together roster's quite well towards a common goal. Can't say I agree entirely with his booking at times, or that's he completely got it right, but probably he's the most successful of the major promotors to get it right long term.
Well if anyone can get the hardcore division going, it's Mick Foley. You seem a little disappoined with the show though.
I was a little disappointed, purely by the segment ratings. I know for instance running some of the cruiserweights, or some of the lower midcarders and below, that the ratings tend to be low for segments but we end up being alright. That particular show though was stacked with a lot of the roster who I'd expect to have the package available to nearly hit the A* show mark. If it was a real life show, I'd have been really happy. Mick Foley is an icon, so certainly, the Hardcore Evolution will be a real force one suspects.
No sarcasm here, Jarrett and Vader are two of my all time faves. I could imagine the shock of the wrestling world if Foley joined WCW in 2001. It would have be nearly unthinkable...the same goes for RVD, he was pretty much ECW for life. Do you try and rationalize these signings in your head? I guess all the rational you need is “anything can happen in wrestling.”
Very big shock I could imagine. In terms of rationalising it, it's exactly that really. Anything can happen in wrestling. Truth be told, I had tried to get Mick in his last month with the WWF, but he wasn't interested. Much the same as Christian, who ended up resigning. So when his contract lapsed and he wasn't resigned, I was very surprised, and grateful and took the opportunity accordingly. I look it as I'm trying to do the best for WCW, and Foley can help bring success to the promotion in my book. WWE I think almost parodied ECW with a touch of irony with the whole 24/7 rule, which made for multiple title changes, poor choices for champions, and an ultimate devaluation on the belt and indeed the niche it formed. I think it's a marketable division, there is probably always going to be a certain demographic who wants to see impact and the sadistic nature of hardcore wrestling. That's why Mick Foley's an important cornerstone for WCW, if anyone can get some credibility into a severly lacking section of the roster its Mick Foley ultimately. That's even if he doesn't get in the ring himself, just moreso through name association and history. Certainly wrestling is full of shocks - another one I'd add is Ric Flair turning up to the WWF with the World Heavyweight Championship from WCW. I think the shock factor played a huge role in it, I don't think he was a great worker, but Lex Luger's showing up at Nitro I think created a sense of "Wow, what is going to happen next?" And I think that ultimately peaked with Ravishing Rick Rude appearing on Nitro, and RAW at the same time.

Look at the WCW main eventers from 96/97and you can see that they were all well into their 30's and 40's yet WCW made a ton of money and nobody was complaining as it was all relatively new. Then you look at 1999 and it was all the same guys on top and fans were tuning out in droves. Even across at the WWF people like Steve Austin weren't exactly young when they received the push for the world title yet he was the biggest grossing wrestler in history. ...
More from the Feedback Files Due to an unprecedented email overload, www.wrestlingisgoodmmkay.com had to put to bed an extraordinary feedback file for World Championship Wrestling. As all frequentors to this site would be aware, the wrestling world is in somewhat a state of traumatic shock with the arrival of Mick Foley from the World Wrestling Federation to WCW. Foley has said he is not the only one coming to WCW, and several inside sources suggest that even Mick Foley is not aware of the rumoured influx of talent coming to WCW. We attempt to answer some of the emails below.

Big Will from El Paso sent this in "Dear y'all, Dang WCW doing 'dis to the bidnez. Foley is WWF 4 Life. Dang ole. I still can't believe this has happened, slim jim." Thanks for your email Big Will. In retrospect, people thought Hulk Hogan was World Wrestling Federation forever once Hulkamania hit, or that he'd remain a face for the remainder of his career. People thought there is no way the Ultimate Warrior freight train could be derailed. People never really thought of Ric Flair turning up to the World Wrestling Federation with the big gold belt. Or that Vince McMahon would screw Bret "Hitman" Hart out of the WWF and into WCW against his will. We editted your photo a little bit, some of the editors thought photoshopping in a new set of teeth would be a good move.
Jim from Little Rock, Arkansas sent this in. "I hear there's the possibility that more will make the journey over from the WWF to WCW. But of course, you'd expect at best those wrestlers to be midcarders. There's no way Vince McMahon would let them slip." You could be right. But we thought the same about Mick Foley. By the way, how's your town's biggest celebrity going?
Akeem sent this in from Harlem "Yo brudda, iz it cool in the crib? Chillin' good dawg? Holmes? Dawg I sent this email because brudda I just want to say the drug pick up went well da other night, dawg.." Oops, I have no idea what he's talking about...
George sent this in from Washington "I don't like the Hardcore Evolution. It's violent. It's almost terrorist in nature. I will order a full bureau investigation and will stop at nothing to find the perpetrator." To you, all we can say is:
Eric sent this in from Utah "I reckon it's all a cover up. I don't think the rumours are true at all. I think WCW knowing how badly it's been managed it's more than likely an old WWF star who might, maybe come like Giant Gonzalez." Interesting speculation. What do you think of Giant Gonzalez's new gimmick? He's the one the left.
Lt. Dan Rothery sent this in from the middle of the Pacific Ocean. "You know what, I enjoyed the likes of Sgt Slaughter in action. He inspired me to do what I'm doing today. Do you think Sgt Slaughter might be coming to WCW?" Sgt Slaughter of course did spend a lot of time with Don Kernodle in the Carolinas which is a traditional hot bed of WCW. However, I just don't see it happening.
We attempted to contact John Simpson to discuss the Mick Foley situation, and the influx of rumours regarding further invaders of World Championship Wrestling. Simpson was unable to be contacted, but his secretary did say "no comment, there's nothing for any fans, or his wife, to be worried about. The rumours just aren't true." Foley in WCW once again? Only in TEW, I guess? Ah well, anything can really happen in W... professional wrestling. So long as ya don't make Flair fight Foley, I won't accuse you of borrowing from the modern WWE. ;) So, any idea on what to do to get your show better ratings that won't make you lose overness? Seems there are segments that should be doing better on paper, but not so well in execution. Which is good, provides a challenge. I *want* to see this diary facing challenges. I'm personally following (aside from anything Vader-related) the Lance Storm storyline. I pray you don't make Lance dance. :D
Interesting about Goldberg, he's been sort of in the background until now in the way that he hasn't been used quite as much as the other main eventers. Where next for Goldberg?
Goldberg I find to be an interesting character. I think he's a better wrestler than he ever really showed in WCW in the squash matches. Having said that, I think there are better wrestlers for him in WCW and as such, I've tried to push good wrestling matches that tell good stories. Even the Hogan match, it got over on the basis of the historical meaning of it all, his hype, and the theory some thought Hulk was passing the torch for once and for all at the time - whereas if you look at say so many of Sting or Ric Flair's great bouts they got over for those sorts of reasons and because people knew if they forked out their hard earned they'd be entertained in the ring via a well told storyline. I'd love to work out how to get the best out of Goldberg, and have a more complete Goldberg at the top once more.
Foley in WCW once again? Only in TEW, I guess? Ah well, anything can really happen in W... professional wrestling. So long as ya don't make Flair fight Foley, I won't accuse you of borrowing from the modern WWE. ;) So, any idea on what to do to get your show better ratings that won't make you lose overness? Seems there are segments that should be doing better on paper, but not so well in execution. Which is good, provides a challenge. I *want* to see this diary facing challenges. I'm personally following (aside from anything Vader-related) the Lance Storm storyline. I pray you don't make Lance dance. :D
Flair's retired, and Foley's retired in TEW too. So they won't be fighting. I think any rational booker would play off their dicey history and the words spoken and written about one another. It's like Shane Douglas and Ric Flair, you wouldn't have had to have been Vince McMahon to pick up the raging anomosity there. In terms of getting better ratings, we'll get there. The key is measuring it against the fall of the WWF, which as long as we stay roughly the same will give us enormous latitude to move from. I've got to figure how to work the Lance Storm-Torrie Wilson-Johnny the Bull storyline right, but I've got a couple of rough ideas :D I think it's only natural that his black humour be utilised. I was a big Lance Storm WCW mark.

Another great show brother. I absolutly loved how you put our comments in the begining of Glyercine, pure comedy gold. As for the show, another great card thats not getting the ratings. What mod are you using by the way? Again I am intereted to see where you go with this Mick Foley thing. And I just want to say something to all the people that keep saying "Only In TEW". Guys, ANYTHING can happen in professional wrestling. Ive said this before and I will say it again. Back in the hieght of the Monday Night Wars, did you ever, in your wildest dreams think that the nWo would be standing in the middle of a WWE ring? Did you ever think the WWF would have to change its name to the WWE? Did you ever think you would see the WWW/E buying WCW AND ECW? NO, if anybody would have said these things in a TEW type diary back then everybody would have been like "Oh, only in a diary could this happen!" In the wacky world of professional wrestling "ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!" Learn To Love It, Because Diamonds Are Forever & So Is The Stallion!

Exactly, its an industry full of suspense. Right now it isn't because of the clear domination of one promotion, but when the industry is competitive there are shocks available left right and centre.

Good show. I liked Nash being used to elevate the cruiserweights but having the experience to pull off the victory. It was interesting to see RVD so high up in the card, what's his position right about now? Was that a break up between Kanyon and Miss Hancock, it looked like it but I'm not 100% sure by the way that angle ended.

I really should stop trying to read diaries from back to front, but the last couple of shows have got me interested to the point of checking out some of what preceeded them. Just a couple of quick comments; I'm interested to see how Foley is used for unlike in the real WCW where he was wasted, you/we've got the benefit of hindsight and knowing the potential Foley had at the time. Also on a minor note, the show bullet point show format reminds me of those on certain wrestling-site result archives and despite not being fully detailed, are lay out the major points of the matches and angles nicely indeed.

Oh boy do I miss WCW. I haven't been following this whole diary, but I just read the last show in it's entirety and I must say it just makes me miss WCW that much more. I like the fact that your pushing Kanyon in your World title picture. He seemed to be the main focus of your show this week and that's not a bad thing its a good thing. Lately, it seemed like the only thing that Kanyon was getting recognition for was coming out of the closet. Another thing I like it that while it seems you are changing some things for the positive, you are keeping things like the realistic WCW was. Goldberg sqaush matches, starts like Sting, Steiner, Nash, and Flair sharing the spotlight. All in all my favorite part of the show was the Mick Foley vignette. Wrestling or not one thing Mick Foley will always do is deliver a great interview. The line about the screams missing from Hardcore wrestling was brilliant. Keep up the good work man. And I'll be reading from here on. Also, if anyone gets a chance check out my TNA diary at

Obsessed with Wrestling can reveal a leaked email between World Championship Wrestling associates revealing the schedule for the upcoming SuperBrawl Revenge Pay-Per-View:- WCW Cruiserweight Championship: "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels will defend against "Prime-Time" Elix Skipper WCW Television Championship Fatal Four-Way: "Sultan of Swing" Juventud Guerrera will defend against "Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe, "Above Average" Mike Sanders and "Mr Wrestling III" Jerry Lynn WCW Hardcore Championship - No Disqualification: "Dog Faced Gremlin" Rick Steiner v the first member of Mick Foley's Hardcore Evolution Singles Match: "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett v Vader Singles Match: "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash v Chavo Guerrero Jr WCW World Tag Team Championships: The Filthy Animals (Konnan and Kidman) will defend against The Perfect Event ("Main Event" Chuck Palumbo and "Perfecshawn" Shawn Stasiak) For the honour of Torrie Wilson: Lance Storm v Johnny the Bull WCW United States Championship: Sean O'Haire will defend against "The Master and Ruler of the World" Sid Vicious War-Games Spectacular for the sole control of WCW: Team Flair: Sting, "New Generation" Rey Mysterio Jr, Goldberg v Team Russo: "The Genetic Freak" Big Poppa Pump, "The Franchise" Shane Douglas, "The King of Bling Bling" Diamond Dallas PageWCW World Heavyweight Championship - TLC Match: Booker T will defend against "Positively" Chris Kanyon A few notes. I'm most interested to see just who Mick Foley's special defender will be in this bought against Rick Steiner. I still think Steiner will take it just because it will further the angle along if he defeats the opponent and gives Foley the chance to bring another hardcore wrestler on. This kinda reminds me of the angle with Raven/Larry Zybsko. The other match I'm interested in is the Main Event. While I'm looking foward to Kanyon's push I don't think that he's going to be able to take out Booker T just yet.

I love this mean style Foley, the feel I'm getting is he's quite bitter and angry, much better than the happy smily WWF commish version. Can't wait to see who is part of his revolution, hopefully another big ECW guy to take WCW to the extreme. I always thought that as WWF pulled away from WCW that a riskier product for WCW could have been helpful. Still loving the diary mate, it's the first one I look for. Out of interest, have you got a long term future planned, as in who you want headlining, what main events, champions etc in six months to a years time? Great diary (still). Keep it up. PS Loving the Kanyon push, he's fitting well in the main event scene.
