NOTBPW Press Conference

December 28th, 2012

Halifax World Trade and Convention Center, Room 200D

[The room is about 75% full, with about 40 press and media types gathered and milling about. There is a continental breakfast available and the press, never ones to refuse free food, are taking full advantage. A side door opens; Jeremy Stone and Victoria Stone-McFly enter and make their way to the table and podium at the front of the room. The press members find seats and get their cameras, recording instruments, and pens ready.]

Jeremy Stone: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and thank you for attending this press conference.

I have always enjoyed this time of year. Obviously Christmas and Boxing Day have a bit to do with that, but it’s also always been an exciting time for North of the Border. It’s our chance to celebrate the past year, look ahead to the upcoming year and see just how we can surpass ourselves in bringing quality wrestling to the arenas and televisions of Canada. And really, with the internet, we have access to a worldwide audience. Wrestling fans today have the ability to see and follow stars from across the world. You can see the best of the best ply their trade here in Canada, across North America and overseas. That’s creating a level of interconnectedness unheard of in my father’s day. I think that’s an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to give wrestling fans the kinds of experiences they’ve dreamed about, that they use video games and e-feds to bring their imagination to bring to life in some small way, but thought they’d never see in an actual arena. Don’t misunderstand me. I am hardly naïve about this industry – business is business and that won’t change. But every single one of us who has stepped into that ring, no matter where it is, no matter how large or small the crowd – we have done it in gratitude to the fans that give us the opportunity to do what we love. We asked ourselves, “What more can we do for them?” And we came up with a couple of answers that we hope are the beginning of something special in this industry.

For the first announcement, I’d like to invite to the podium NOTBPW’s Chief Operations Officer and Creative Director – and of course, my favorite sister – Victoria Stone-McFly.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/8RoW/Roster/VictoriaStone-McFly.jpg

Victoria Stone-McFly: Thanks Jeremy.

I love this industry, and I’m sure that comes as no surprise. It was important to me as a wrestler and it is important to me as an heir to the Father of Canadian Wrestling. But even beyond that, this industry is important to me as a woman. I’m a mother whose daughter just turned 11. I want Lucy and girls like her to have strong female role models, and this industry can and should be a source of those role models.

Women’s wrestling today is in better shape now than it’s been in the past 20 years. But it’s still underexposed and underappreciated. We need to create more opportunities for women in this industry. And like Jeremy said, we asked ourselves, “What more can we do?” And we realized that we could build a platform to raise the visibility of women in this industry. But that platform couldn’t just be the North of the Border Women’s Division. It had to be bigger than that. It had to be an industry platform, not just a North of the Border platform.

So we reached out. And the response was bigger than I had dared hope it would be.

[Victoria touches a button on the podium and a video screen turns on displaying a logo.]

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/8RoW/Banners%20and%20Belts/IWWA.png

Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to announce the founding of the International Women’s Wrestling Alliance, an organization dedicated to creating new opportunities for women in this industry to reach new audiences, to grow as athletes and performers, and to become the kind of role models our daughters deserve.

The charter members of the IWWA are: The women’s division of North of the Border Professional Wrestling, 5 Star Supreme Wrestling, Angel Athletic Association, Queens of American Wrestling, and the women’s division of Comité Internacional de Lucha Libre.

I’m truly excited to have the opportunity for our women to represent the North of the Border brand internationally, and I’m equally excited to show our fans the great women wrestlers of our generation; names like Rodruiguez, Karube, Maruya, Harper, York, as well as names you don’t know now, but will – Estrella Blanca, Pinky Perez, Foxxy LaRue, Danielle Sweetheart, Jillian Jarvis.

The future of women’s wrestling is bright, and we intend to keep it that way.

Let’s take some questions – Ryan, I know you, but for the benefit of those watching on the stream, take the mike that’s being brought to you and introduce yourself.

Questioner: Hi Victoria, Ryan Jalda of GrappleFanatics and WrestleTalk Radio here. I think what you’re setting up here for women in the business is a great idea, and it’s cool to see the level of participation you’re getting. But I can’t help but notice some fairly large names missing – names like Alicia Strong, for one. And with rumors that TCW is starting a women’s division where does that put an organization that’s staking a claim to represent all of women’s wrestling?

Victoria Stone-McFly: Actually, Ryan, Sam and Alicia were among the first people we talked to, and they are very supportive of the IWWA. Our families have been friends for years. But this early in the process, having two organizations our size in the mix would make the business considerations involved—for them and us—more complex. We didn’t want that to get in the way of the goal – giving women’s wrestling larger platforms. We mutually agreed that the time isn’t quite right for them. We are hopeful that the time becomes right in the future. As far as TCW is concerned – if the rumors are true – we would welcome their women’s division to our sorority, just like we would welcome any women’s promotion or division that wanted to be a part of the IWWA.

Jeremy Stone: My only advice to Tommy – if you are starting a women’s division? Keep a close eye on Edd. The uninhibited pursuit of the fairer sex has been the cause of some of his more…notorious escapades.

Victoria Stone-McFly: Enough out of you, Jeremy, you’ll get your turn. Dan, let’s take you next.

Questioner: Thanks Vickie – Dan Mardayl with Pro Wrestling Hits – I’m kind of looking at this from the other direction, I suppose. You’ve mentioned some great little promotions, but that’s just it, they’re little, and then there’s North of the Border. At first blush, this looks like a feeder system with a fancy name. Are you calling the shots here?

Victoria Stone-McFly: Absolutely not. I meant it when I said this is bigger than us. Every member of IWWA has a say in how things are run. And knowing that IWWA was going to need independent leadership, the five member groups evaluated candidates and unanimously picked who I feel is just the right person to be IWWA’s commissioner. His business acumen is unquestioned, and while he’s not been a part of our business specifically, he’s been one of the most vocal advocates and sponsors of women’s wrestling worldwide. I wish he could have been here, but prior commitments kept him from attending today. Rest assured, you’ll be hearing from him soon enough. I’m pleased to announce that business magnate Remianen Valorien is the inaugural commissioner of the IWWA. I think it’s fair to say that no one here believes that Remi is under our thumb – or anyone else’s thumb for that matter.

We do have a press package for you with additional information that you can use in future stories. I don’t mean to cut this short, but if you think this was a bombshell, there’s a whole other announcement to make and Jeremy is getting annoyed with me holding his spotlight this long.

Jeremy Stone: Well, I can’t let my sister have all the fun, can I? I’m proud to have a small role in helping her realize this dream of hers. But yes, let’s shift gears a bit. In the same spirit that gave birth to the IWWA, we at North of the Border want to do even more to give fans moments that transcend any individual promotion, to give fans an offering that celebrates the art of wrestling in its many forms – traditional, sports entertainment, lucha libre, puroresu. But instead of building something new, in this case we want to open up one of our oldest traditions and share it.

I’m talking about the Ed Henson Memorial Tag Team Cup.

This March will be the 15th Ed Henson Cup. I believe wholeheartedly the Cup is one of the most prestigious wrestling tournament titles in our industry. I know what the Cup means to me personally – I’ve said it before and I still believe it – the Cup means more to me than even the NOTBPW Championship. I know Dan feels that way too. I know what the Cup means to people like Owen Love, like Dean McWade, like Larry Wood. The Cup is a celebration of tag team wrestling. It is a celebration of not only Ed Henson, but all of the pioneers of our business that paved the way for us. What it has become over the past fifteen years is special. And I believe we can make it even more so.

This year, for the first time ever, the Ed Henson Memorial Tag Team Cup will be an open invitational. Any tag team, anywhere in the world, can compete for a spot in the Cup. We’ll gather the best of the best. We will put them in the same ring. And we will celebrate our sport in a way that has never been done before.

This is my message to the great tag teams of our industry. I don’t care who you are or from where you hail. I don’t care if you’re flyers, brawlers, technicians or all of the above. Come. Test yourselves. We’ll give you our best Canadian hospitality. But we’ll also give you our best in the ring. And whoever drinks from the Cup this year? Calling them the best tag team in the world would be no lie.

I see we’ve already got folks chomping at the bit to get a question in. Daryl, grab a mike and fire away.

Questioner: Daryl Daman, WrestlingCircle.com. I’m sorry, Jeremy, but color me skeptical. Has anyone actually accepted your invitation?

Jeremy Stone: As a matter of fact, yes. You’ll have to tune into Championship Wrestling to find out whom, though.

Questioner: Ah, right, of course. So any company can send a representative tag team to the Cup? Even your rivals, CGC?

Jeremy Stone: An open invitation is exactly what it says it is, Daryl.

Questioner: So are we finally going to get a proper Stones/DeColts match? Is that the ‘moment’ you’re teasing here? How’s Steve feel about that?

Voice from the back: Why don’t you ask ME that!

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/8RoW/Roster/SteveDeColt.jpg

[To the surprise of the press, Steve DeColt is in the back of the room; no one seemed to notice when he quietly entered. Dressed in jeans, a leather jacket, and a T-shirt that says "Outsider", DeColt storms up to the podium and grabs the mike.]

Steve DeColt: So what the hell does ‘proper’ mean, eh? Am I not a ‘proper’ DeColt now, you filthy dirt sheet peddler?

Questioner: Steve, that’s not what I—

Steve DeColt: Shut up, jackass! You want to know how I feel about the Ed Henson Cup?! You want to know what I think about making the Cup an open invitational?! Here’s a shocker for you – I think it’s the first damn thing Jeremy’s done right since he took over for the old man.

I’ll be honest. At first, I didn’t get it. I didn’t get why the Cup was so damn important to these people. I refused to participate the first year I was here. I’ve done the brother tag team thing. To me it was just another way of using me to tease the whole Stones/DeColts family feud wet dream some people – like you – have. But when Johnny convinced me to partner with him, to form The Outsiders, and then win the Cup? I couldn’t believe how big that high was. It WAS bigger than winning the NOTBPW title. It WAS bigger than winning the CGC title. Beating the hell out of Jeremy to win it was just icing on the cake.

Look, it’s no secret that my brothers and I still have our differences. I, at least, am a big enough man to set that aside for something as important as this. Boys, I hope you’re watching – because you need to do this. Don’t use whatever you might think of me as an excuse to not show up. Ed Henson’s legacy is bigger than us! It’s bigger than the Stones! And it should be bigger than Canada! The Ed Henson Cup is the premier prize of this industry. Winning it should be a goddamn prerequisite to getting into the Hall of Immortals. You turn this down, you try to duck this? Then you have no goddamn business asking who rules. Because it sure as hell isn’t you!

Show me some pride, boys. Don’t embarrass Dad by wussing out. Make. This. Happen.

[DeColt spikes the microphone, strides up the aisle and walks out the door.]

Victoria Stone-McFly: …well, I would say that’s as good place as any to wrap this up, eh? We appreciate your taking time out to attend this morning. As our way of saying thank you to the press members in attendance, your credentials are also your invitation to tonight’s NOTBPW Year End Celebration and Charity Banquet in the Grand Ballroom downstairs. The bar opens at 5 o’clock, and dinner will be served at 7. Hope to see you there!

Llewellyn's Ale House is a favorite watering hole of the Stone family, being just a stone's throw (pardon the pun) from the NOTBPW corporate offices. Tonight, the family and a few other NOTBPW notables have gathered here for a postrevel after the Year End Celebration and Charity Ball. For the most part they are gathered in the private dining room, but some come out to interact with those regulars who were allowed to stay after Llewellyn closed the establishment to the public for the night. Those who stay are treated to, among other things, Jason O'Conner leading spirited renditions of a number of songs including "The German Clockwinder", "Seven Drunken Nights", and in a odd departure from the traditional Irish drinking song, "Poisoning Pigeons In the Park". (He was asked by preteen parent Sean McFly to reconsider when he introduced "The Widow's Promise".)

In the back, Dan Sr. was holding court, telling old road stories to anyone who would listen. Jeremy and Victoria are situated at an out of the way table, discussing the day's events over the pints of lager they had foresworn during the Ball itself.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/8RoW/Roster/JeremyStone-1.jpghttp://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/Wallbanger1071/8RoW/Roster/VictoriaStone-McFly.jpg

"Did you see how much Alan's hat collection went for at the silent auction?" Vickie asked her brother.

Jeremy grinned in response. "That was great. I know it wasn't easy for him to donate them, but when he saw how much it raised, you could see how good it made him feel."

"And I think the toques we gave him for Christmas helped a bit too. At least he has proper Canadian headwear now."

"I'm not letting him wear any of those in the ring either, you know."

"Heh. I just wonder--geez, my phone's going off again!" A steady stream of calls, texts, emails and tweets had bombarded Victoria's smartphone in the hours following the press conference. It was taking effort just to keep it charged.

"I didn't think we'd be getting this kind of response so soon."

"Some of it is that, but there's just a lot of stuff going on in general, especially among the big companies. For some reason it's become a seller's market, and it's come pretty much out of nowhere. Today just threw petrol on the fire. I'm going to have to Plan B a couple of things because folks I was banking on signing after Big City Brawl are heading elsewhere." Victoria glanced at her phone to see if the cause of the most recent notification required immediate attention. It took her a moment to recognize the number.

"Wow. That's a number I haven't seen in a long time."

"Who?"

"Don't worry about it for now, I'm not sure I'll even respond - gotta think about it."

"Alrighty, consider it not worried about."

Victoria took a sip of beer. Things are certainly getting interesting, she thought to herself.

Although I commented on this earlier I did so soley on the fact that it was a NOTBPW dynasty and hadn't read the press conference. I just read it and WOW! I felt like I was there and I really like what you did with it. My favoriote part was the fact that Lucy Stone-McFly was mentioned even though she's only 11. If I wasn't hooked before reading that press conference I am now. I can't wait to see where this goes, keep up the great work!

Since I already know the results I won't make predictions, but I do want to say that I'm looking forward to seeing NOTBPW in action. I have troubles booking them so I'm hoping this gives me some ideas and stops me thinking of them as being soul-less, even if they did make my favourite referee lose the hats. :(

Liking the look of this and enjoying the characterizations so far. "The Outsider" Steve DeColt is a nice take. Also have to say that I love that the McFly nickname and theme have basically become canon at this point.
