The Road to Glory Challenge

Recommended Posts

After January and February I lost $9800 total; after running 2 shows in March, and leaving my most expensive worker (Roger Monteiro) off of one of the cards after my user character injured him, I only lost about $4,000.

I am slightly disappointed though; the estimated Sponsorship Income was $1,563 and I only made $675. Is it because the economy is at F and falling? That would seem to make some sense.

Yes, if the economy drops below E+ you won't get the expected sponsorship cash.

Using a Performance >>> Popularity product, which seems sensible as my UC is likely to be my best worker, at least in terms of performance skills.

Initial roster:

Ava Anderson, Claire Winters, Cobra, Deborah Young, Lily Snyder, Maria Guest, Quentin Queen, Seth Whitehead.

I brought in Xander Summer as my ref... and then Michael Bull got appointed as CEO, so I re-offered Xander a 1 month, 1 show deal <img alt=":o" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/redface.png.900245280682ef18c5d82399a93c5827.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> I would have preferred a road agent, all things considered.

First show pulled a E+, so not bad at all. Let's see how we get on from here...

First things first is my Anniversary Show(My first yearly event) to kick off the year. After that, I will likely take a few months off to climb out of debt. Once I'm in the black, I am making the push to Small size. When we hit small, I plan on rebranding the company to Ohio Championship Wrestling. The Big Man on the Block title will become the All Ohio Championship. I will keep the Big Man on the Block moniker for a yearly tournament to be held staring in 2018 (assuming I don't go bankrupt before then).

The Mystery Box:

43. "Internet Sensation" One of your wrestlers (random roll from the list) has become an internet video hit due to a pirate recording of his last match. +2 pop for your company in every area that you already have popularity in and +10 pop for the wrestler in all areas.

And the winner is: Garry The Enterainer who just went from being an extra body I picked up halfway through the year to my top wrestler, and the bump in pop my company got might be enough to push us to small following my anniversary show.

WPL, 2016

WPL ran 10 shows, skipping October and November to try and save some money. Even so, we're $17k down at the turn of the year. It doesn't seem likely we'll make 2018 :(

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q81/jamescasey_photos/jcskillsplusone.jpg

Notable gains across Performance - +9 to Safety, +6 to Psychology (road agenting any match I'm not in) and Selling, +7 to Consistency.

Note my Reputation drop - I injured Quentin Queen on one of the first shows and took a 10 point hit, so +5 apart from that. I'm not sure what Reputation effects, in-game, but it's annoying that I took that hit. With Safety up 9, that hopefully won't happen again.

Roll: 40. “I SMASH!!” or “I’m In My 20s, On The Internet And I Enjoy The WWE”

Nothing of use to me there, really, so I took the random roll for 36 points, which I'll add to my Weird rating... taking it to 36

I have a 2-0-8 record after ten matches, and an E average/E+ high so far.

As for WPL:

WPL Champion

Deborah Young - March 2016 - 1 defence

Lily Snyder - May 2016 - 0 defences

Ava Anderson - June 2016 - 1 defence

Deborah Young (2) - September 2016 - 0 defences

Lily Snyder (2) - December 2016 - Current champion

All matches are booked without me choosing a winner, unless Cobra complains about his record, in which case he gets put over me a couple of times.

Lily Snyder got some backstage heat over her attitude. Letting her win the title (twice!) probably wasn't a great response.

Maria Guest got called into wrestlers' court for not paying her tab. Already a positive backstage influence, her behaviour is said to have improved since.

James Casey and Quentin Queen have heat after a botched move by Casey left Queen with a bruised tailbone. Queen missed no time over the injury.

EDIT: Friday, Week 1, June 2017 - WPL go bankrupt :(

Let's try this again...

So after reading the entire thread for advice i ran soooo many shows, 23 to be precise. I think we are still around 6 months away from making it to Small and with our slightly favourable product (because of the Comedy) we are still losing a few 100 each month.

Since anything from E- upwards is gaining us Pop. i have been quite happy to throw anyone (and everyone) in the ring, this includes my Owner, Kim Korana and the SNP strippes who i have started up a feud with as i can beat any Woman in the ring...

My Relationships;

Hatred of Jeff Amazon

Hatred of Baz Smith

Simmering Tension with Hellraiser

Simmering Tension with Russel Nixon

A few other folk on the roster have tensions with each other, Sharif seems to of p'd off half the roster at some point or other - Since i only pay him £120 a show though it is hard to just drop him... And storyline-wise he plays the role of my lackey so i dont want him to go.

My Personal Pop. is at E- in Central England so since i am a Main Eventer i of course gave myself the only Title (BIW King of Kings) in June (a nice Birthday present for myself).

Hellraiser was the first Champion before dropping the belt to Colin Picalo who i beat for it.

So my first year roll...

My Record: 22 wins, 12 losses.

My Best Match: Jessie Omega (me) and Sharif defeated Marbella and Kourtney (BIW Live Wire, November 2016).

It's a harsh life. I've just run my first show of the 'new' WPL, and even with a product now favourable to sponsorship, cheaper and fewer workers, I still lost close to a grand.

So I'll be running 4-5 months without shows this year, and booking myself in 2-3 matches a night, with everyone else working at least once a night. I suspect we'll see some repeat booking penalties cropping up soon with only 6 workers on the books... but with 0 popularity, anything is better.

Incidentally, I shuffled my stats a bit - almost all my top row points went into brawling as an experiment. I'm hoping for a favourable year-end roll to get me a little variety up top this time.

One just to see what had changed from TEW 2010 (I never played 2013 much) and one that I'm going to write up as a dynasty. However, this was after 5 financial failures.

What I see is.

1) although running 2 shows per month can get your company's popularity up fast, you have to balance that with the additional costs. Early sponsorship cash is poor, especially if the economy is D- or less and that means the extra $2500 for a second show just puts you that much more behind when it often is difficult to be gaining more than $2000 per month by June 2017 (unless you don't do a show on some months.)

2) You really need to run a minimal roster at first. Both of my successful RTG games have started with only 6 workers being signed. (5 wrestlers and 1 referee). I use my owner as the announcer (fortunately its Marvin Earnest in both so he starts at around 72 announcing) and I use the best wrestler as my road agent. (and in the game that has gotten to 2019, my user character is the #2 road agent as his psychology score is 63 now.)

3) don't avoid getting to small, but you probably shouldn't rush it either. This might not be as true with a product where performance >> Popularity, but in ones where popularity matters part of what you need to do is get the workers popularity up a bit before you make the leap. You also need to consider the fact that at small your promotion will get compared to all other small promotions in the region/country and if your production values aren't as good, you take a penalty on every show. Raising the values can quickly add $4000 or more to your monthly bill. {In my game that is in 2019, 2 small companies are running pro level production for the camera they pay $7500 per month and $2000 per show, the semi-pro level I maintain is $1500 per month and $500 per show. - my profit last month was $900.)

4) also concerning the jump to small, many of the AI run companies will run very high production values, even if it runs them out of business. I saw GSW get a warning that they were going to go bankrupt and the company actually proceeded to increase its music and ticket taking settings. They died shortly after that.

That was added to reflect the fact that people understand you don't have many people.

And I've run shows every month and made it out of debt by Feb 2017 in one RTG game, and in the 2nd in April 2016 I'm only $2500 in debt despite running a show every month.

The trick is:

1) cheap workers. (my worker costs are/were $1800 for the game that is now in 2019 and $1740 for the game that I just started).

2) have shows early in the month to maximize the sponsor revenue

3) Patience. My method usually means I get to small in very late 2017 or early 2018 (April 2018 for the game that has gone that long.), but I reach that point with a solid bank account. (Again using my game that has gotten to 2019, I had over $25000 in the bank when I hit small. It's allowed me to weather a really bad economy that has never seemed to get above D- for long and usually is around E/E-. My sponsorship forecast is $8400 and I get maybe $5500.) I'm profitable because I don't run a second show yet, and I have mostly cheap workers. I think the most expensive one is $720/PPA. (Well the owner is $986/Written, but I can't fire him. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> )

Note: I noticed your comment about losing almost a grand in your first month. I don't have the exact numbers anymore, but IIRC in my longer game my first month's finances went something like. (This isn't 100% accurate, but it does reflect the pattern.)

Jan 2016 - lost $1300

Feb 2016 - Lost $1100

Mar 2016 - Lost $1200

Apr 2016 - Lost $900

May 2016 - Lost $450

June 2016 - Lost $300

July 2016 - Lost $200

Aug 2016 - Lost $100

Sept 2016 - Made $90

Once I started making money I quickly got back in the black and was able to add 4 more wrestlers even before I hit small and continue to make money. (I had an owner goal of having $10,000 in the bank on Jan 1, 2018)

The one I'm going to turn into a dynasty is only 4 months in, but it turns out I have the exact figures in a word document. (This is with an A economy and a product favorable to sponsorship, so its about the best I think anyone could do.)

Jan 2016 - lost $1354

Feb 2016 - lost $871

Mar 2016 - lost $801

Apr 2016 - lost $386

Total - lost $3412 since opening.

Thanks again for the tips mvargus.

I have started again, exact same company and product, changed my stats a little...

I took out my 50 from Refereeing and put it into Microphone (+15) Acting (+25) and Menace (+10).

This time aswell i have boosted my Negotiating skill up to 7 and it seems i can hire workers for around $20 cheaper.

I have signed Allan Round (Referee) $300.

Annihilus $190.

Khloe $220.

Kitty Katz $240.

Russel Nixon $250.

Mark Moore is again my owner working for Free. He will use his decent Entertainment skills to open each show.

That should be enough until the UK starts getting a few more workers debuting who will work for less than 200, then i'll drop Nixon and bring one or two more in. I will work as the Road Agent for matches i am not in, someone else will have to the others.

The Wrestling Industry is F and falling, Economy is B and falling.

EDIT: Just remembered one thing i did change about the product is the Match Ratio, i dropped it to 60% (was 80) so i can get more angles in.

I almost always set it to 70% in my RTG promotions so I can use a lot of taunting and attacks to help bolster my storylines. The boost you get from a good storyline is definitely something to work for.

That wrestling industry is going to suck. You'll see almost no boost in popularity no matter how good your shows are, which means sponsorship cash will grow slowly. I made the jump to small and three months later got knocked back down to local. I went from putting on shows in the mid 40s to struggling to hit 30. Does the production values effect the show grades that much? If so, I'm going to have to cap my growth at local until I get enough money to afford the higher production costs so I have a shot at competing in the regional battles.

I haven't look at the exact numbers as I always use letter grades (just like the mystery of it I guess), but in my experience, it does knock you down at least one level, so a C- show becomes a D+. Where you start to be okay is when you are close to the best, so now my messages is slightly worse than at least one rival in three of the four production areas. I am still at small, but regional is coming up fast, and I might sit on small for a while because the next step of production cost a minimum of 20k a month to get them all up to par.

I believe Dr. Hook has it right. I also just use letter grades, but I was uniformly getting D grades at local and once I jumped up to small my grades dropped to D- until I was making enough money to afford to get 3 of the 4 production areas up so they were equal to that of my best rivals.

And once I did get them up my show grades jumped to D+, so it could have been a drop of about 10 points.

Yeah the penalties for production values [especially for being an indy company] are ridiculously stiff. Nobody goes to Chikara and craps all over it that hard for it not being evolve lmao. I recently made the jump to regional and was starting to make money and booking multiple shows in the low 60s.... same level of matches and angles now that I finally bought in production and all that to an equal level of my competition... low 80s. 20 point difference.

So after hiring much cheaper workers but the Industry and Economy falling i only put on 10 shows this time round.

I have managed to not upset anyone this time around, haven't even injured anyone .. Yet! I did a lot of the same storyline stuff, putting people in the ring who have no real right to be there... As long as we scored E- up i didn't care.

Finances: We have still lost money but it is nowhere near the loss on my first attempt, -4,569.

Pop. So with shows only gaining us .2 Pop i didn't span shows out, we are nowhere near getting to Small. Less than 2 Pop in Home region.

So my first year roll;

37. “Eeeehhhhhhhhhhh” or “It’s Not Arrogance If You Can Back It Up” You can choose to add 20 points to your Cool Performance rating OR Cocky Performance rating OR use a random number generator to score between 0 and 50, adding the number to either rating. -Random number generator says "43" into 'Cocky'

My current stats;

http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/oo302/brettney1980/wrestling%20stuff/R2G%20Jessie%20Omega-2-Year1_zps3lzclhpc.png

Interesting stats;

Bad Idea Wrestlings best show: BIW Heaven's on Fire (E+ February 2016)

Nobody goes to Chikara and craps all over it that hard for it not being evolve lmao. I recently made the jump to regional and was starting to make money and booking multiple shows in the low 60s.... same level of matches and angles now that I finally bought in production and all that to an equal level of my competition... low 80s. 20 point difference.

I don't mind that the production penalties are so stiff, I just don't see why I'm being compared to companies running shows in New York and California if I'm running shows in Chicago.

In my current game I am based in the Southeast and having regional battle in the mid-Atlantic with PSW and NYCW, but we all run our shows in our home region. It's a long way from Mississippi to Pittsburgh. Where it makes sense to me,though, is that the battle is occurring in the spillover areas, where fans of regional wrestling have some options to choose from. I can see the arguments from both sides, as I get annoyed that I would lose a regional battle to QAW when our products are so different- why would fans of women's wrestling care what my shows look like when I don't run women's wrestling? Yet, a general wrestling fan who is willing to give any product a chance might make the comparison

On the flip side, we are talking about regional companies here, so indy, or small shows. Do people really expect them to have WWE production values? So if my DVD distribution has only a couple camera angles, my show looks worse compared to a promotion 2000 miles away that uses an extra camera? Or my live event crew is smaller than a company in NYC? I should think at the Cult or National levels where you are truly competing for a share of a broad market, the production comparisons are more relevant.

This one is based on the premise that the "smart" wrestling fans check out the internet and note what people are saying about the experience at the other companies the same size as yours, so if you aren't putting on as good a show with a good policy of uploading top quality video highlights, they tend to look a bit down on your shows overall.

Not really realistic, but its used to cover a number of things. And it does force the player to make a few more intelligent decisions.

I chose the upgrade, but I like that I had to think it through pretty carefully.
